ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – A 24 year-old Dominican man has been arrested for the January 19 murder of an American tourist.
Police said Tishara Daniel, a resident of Swetes Village, was detained on Friday and has since been charged for the murder of 29-year-old Nina Elizabeth Nilssen.
Daniel is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
Nilssen’s body was discovered at the popular Pigeon Point Beach area in the south of the island with a puncture wound to her neck. She had come ashore along with other passengers on the Royal Clipper cruise ship but strayed from the main group.
Police have not disclosed a motive for the killing, which has led to Star Clippers – the cruise operator – dropping Antigua from its itinerary.
The ship will instead call at neighbouring Nevis.
“Star Clippers has called at Antigua for many years without incident, and with its long sailing and yacht history, the island has always been a popular destination with our guests,” Star Clippers chief executive officer Mikael Krafft said in a statement on Friday.
“We are taking this decision after much deliberation, and we will continue to monitor the security situation in Antigua and evaluate our options for next winter season regarding returning to the island,” he added.
This is the second time a cruise operator has dropped Antigua from its schedule in recent months, following a similar decision by Carnival Cruise Lines taken late last year.
Antigua and Barbuda’s image as a tourist destination has taken a beating over the past two years with three other visitors being murdered during that time.
In 2008, Benjamin and Catherine Mullany, a British couple honeymooning in Antigua, died after being attacked in their hotel room, while last year an Australian sailor was fatally shot in the English Harbour area while walking with his girlfriend and their daughter.
There have also been a number of other attacks on tourists, including the highly publicised scuffle between a group of American cruise ship visitors and local law enforcement authorities that stemmed from a dispute over the cost of a taxi ride.
All the people that living Dominica and going to Antigua I think they have no ambition, they need to use the wisdom knowlage an ambition god give them and ues it to develop their beautiful country call .
I LOVE Dominica. I am from the U.S. and have visited twice. The shame for Dominica is in trying to turn it into a typical Caribbean destination. It isn’t. Dominica, please hold to your traditional values, and agriculture. You are truly a self sustaining nation. Learn to market yourself for what you are. So many people are looking for a slice of the real nature that you currently provide. Once you turn into a typical tourist destination… I and many like me will cease to come. The shame for young Dominicans is in the envy you have for the rest of the world. Take note of what is unique and special in what you already HAVE. That envy is the root of most crime. To Antiguans, don’t discriminate – it’s ugly and unwarranted. Most Dominicans are wonderful. There are a few (just like any place on Earth) who would ruin a beautiful thing. Don’t “cast the first stone.”
it is sad that the lady died and also the previous murders. but why on earth she thought she should walk around a place she does not know …??? people should learn when you come in a group stay with the group…
with all the crime so call Dominicans doing in other countries they starting to make me shame..i am very proud of my country but these people bringing it down bad …

Well they will have to look at his past record and if he have a criminal rocord well? I guess they would have known that before they arrest him. If after all the evidence he is guilty God help us.
If this man committed the crime, the book of justice should be thrown at him with great force.
One thing we can all agree on is that crime on islands that were not considered crime infested islands( like Jamaica, Trinidad, and Haiti) have been on a steady rise. This statement is supported by regional police records, the World Bank, and the United Nation Office of Drug and Crime. What this should tell us is that if the leaders and citizens of the caribbean do not take serious steps to curtail crime, the comfort that we enjoy in Dominica will be compromised, and citizens will live in fear and apprehension. Once the cancer of crime spreads, it will be be very difficult to control it (ask the Jamaican, Trinidadian, and Haition officials).
Dominica has seen an unprecedented number of murders in the past two years. There were 8 murders in 2008, and I believe twelve or thirteen in 2009 (my numbers may be a bit off). Once upon a time, not too long ago, if we had four murders in a span of two years, there would be cause for alarm. These days, we tend to look at murders as everyday occurences.
The young generation in Dominica has become much more aggressive in how they resolve problems; and they are easily influenced by the negative portrayal of life in music and movies. They are the generation of “get it fast no matter what it takes…no matter who gets hurt” The biggest problem I had growing up in Dominica was trying to determine which mango tree I should climb. The young of today a bewildered with so many problems, that when things do not go their way, they lash out aggressively against each and innocent people. We need to definitely get a hold of that generation in order to secure the future.
Let us keep in mind that Dominica, like most islands, is very fragile; and as it shifts from an agricultural based economy to a service and industrial based economy, we must do our best to prevent or alleviate crime so that we can attract foreign investors and tourists. All crime does is undermine growth, threaten human welfare, and impede social development.
Until we can put things in place, we should continue to throw the book at criminals who threaten our wonderful island and our way of life.

Any one who commits a crime against a torist who comes to spend their money in your country commits a crime against the state and this should be looked at as trism. This gyu if found guilty and if in fact guilty should be hanged. the ship pulled out of antigua all because of one man. If this man is ever sent back to D/A after his jail term he should spend time in jail here for bringing D/A good name to the gutter.

We can’t just jump to conclusions so fast. Remember every procecutor wants to win case. There is a LONG STANDING RIFF BETWEEN antigua and Dominican nationals living there. There has also been cases of petty theft and drugs won and lost by Antiguan authorities. ..
I am in no way saying that there aren’t Dominicans who misbehave in Antigua. That’s very unfortunate and stupid of them but, because of the rift between Antigua, presumably the authorities, and Dominican nationals it’s easy to see how a Dominican could be made the scape goat in such a high profile incident that involves the tourist industry, of all things lately. This is a very immotional issue for Antigua.
We have to be carefull here because they ‘may’ be trying to put a Dominican in the middle of it. That would make it easy for a local jury to give the case to the procecutor, all because of ill feelings towards Dominicans. Also, whether the D/a person wins this case, damage will have already been done; this can be enough for Antiguans to want to take to the streets and put ‘those Dominicans’ who imigrate there to earn a living out of their island. Trust me, dese authorities can’t wait to divide Antiguans and Dominicans who have loved and trusted each other for years. So, we have to be very careful not to jump to conclusions on this.
The lesson to be learned here by Dominica is to POLICE all areas and routs frequented by tourist vigilantly AND PROPERLY! there’s no alternative! We just lately trained and deployed 50 or 75 new officers, some of whom could be further deployed to tourism protection assignments. We have to protect the people, their lives, our livelyhood.
REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED TO ST.CROIX. …up to this day St.Croix has not recovered as a result of violent incidents against tourists….Who would have thought Dominica could today be receiving more tourist ships than St.Croix. Here is our example. We have to do the right thing.
Who are we to judge a man before he is found guilty, he may well be innocent. We are all west indians and its about time we stop talking about “foreigners” and start talking like intelligent human beings. I am embarassed by some of the comment made!!!
