Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Inspector Claude Weekes has made a call for social agencies to unite to help minimize criminal behaviour in Dominica.
Speaking to the media last week, Weekes insisted that the “blame game” must stop and everyone take responsibility to minimize crimes.
“The social agencies, the agencies in Dominica, we must come together to deal with the issue. Let us stop the blame game in Dominica. I think in my opinion we are blaming ourselves all the time, but what is crucial is what is it as a human being in this country, as an individual in this country, what is it that we are doing on our part to minimize criminality,” the PRO said.
He said that while Dominica is a relatively peaceful nation it is not immune to crimes which should be addressed.
“Security is a global issue and all governments in the world including this region, including Dominica, they are very concerned about criminal activity. We can say Dominica is a generally, relatively peaceful. We can boast of it, but on the other hand Dominica will not be immune to any kind of criminality. No country in the world,” Weekes said.
Weekes said that crimes can negatively affect local and foreign investment.
“It is important that we minimize the impact of criminality – whether it is drugs, whether it is a sexual offense… we have to abduct a multi-dimensional approach to dealing with any kind of criminality; if we are not careful it can erode the democracy, it can erode the rule of law, it can erode the institutional capacity of the state, the human resource and it will not do the country well. It will affect our local and foreign investment. And it is important that we as a people, we as a nation come together to address the situation,” Weekes said.

It is better to do something now than to do nothing at all.
I hope your appeal do not fall on death ear.
Inspector it is all well and good to say this, but tell us, the citizens, what we must do and how can we feel confident that out trust is not being compromised.
Claude is a well meaning person but police and politics do not mix well.
Your job is to enforce the law and the politicians job is to make law and comment on its effectiveness.
