Coulibistrie Primary School student receives scholarship from Caribbean student body at MSU

Davidson Loy and Joyce Jones

Recently, Dr. Randy Glean, Director of International Services at Midwestern State University (MSU) visited Dominica to recruit and have an orientation with the six students who will be attending MSU in the Fall 2011 semester.

He encouraged the students to study hard and participate in the Caribbean Student Organization (CSO) which will be 18 years this year.  He further emphasized that the CSO Alumni are giving back to their communities in many ways like helping two mothers who were affected by the floods last year in St. Lucia and St. Vincent & the Grenadines respectively, as well as giving scholarships.

In 2004 the Alumni Chapter of CSO at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas formed the Caribbean Alumni for Regional Progress (CARP) Scholarship.  The aim of the CARP Scholarship is to assist the needy students in the islands of Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Kitts/Nevis, and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

The scholarship, which is in the amount of US $200 or EC$530 (previously EC $500, 2004- 2006), is awarded annually to one student (per island) for the purchase of school supplies and/or payment of school fees.

The recipient of the scholarship should be a current student at a selected Primary School, and he/she should be selected based on his/her financial needs and academic performance.

The 2011 CARP Recipient, is 12 year old, Davidson Loys, from the Coulibistrie Primary School.  He will be attending the Isiah Thomas Secondary School in September 2011.

Also, present at the orientation was Stella Alcendor, the 2007 CARP Recipient who receives a yearly scholarship starting from 2008 from the CZO Boyz Alumni, which consists of about forty males of the alumni chapter.

A sum of EC $800 was handed to Stella by Dr. Randy Glean, a MSU alumnus.

The 2010 CARP Scholarship Recipients were Markley John from the Morne Prosper Primary School, and Tifara Francis from the Bagatelle Primary School. Markley and Tifara are currently attending the Dominica Grammar School and the Pierre Charles Secondary School respectively.  The scholarships were given by the Dominica’s CARP Representative, Joyce Jones.  Also, present at the orientation was David Vital, another MSU alumnus.
