Tourist dies at Champagne Beach

Champagne beach

Reports reaching Dominica News Online say a female tourist who got into trouble while swimming in the popular Champagne Bay area south of Pointe Michel has died.

One police source told DNO that the woman’s body was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital.

The woman was said to have encountered difficulties while swimming, but was able to struggle to the shore, where she collapsed.

DNO will continue to follow that story and bring readers details  as they become available.

I just want to say, we are really touch by your comments and we would like to had the latest news and informations so you can know the truth about her death. My mom was snokeling with my dad and 2 cousins so she was not alone, my dad was with her holding her hands when she began to feel very very tire almost falling asleep. My dad brought her back to the beach with the help of a guide. Once she arrived at the beach her breathing was almost gone. A doctor made many cardiac manoeuvre but in vain…the ambulance brought her to the hospital but she was already dead. She had a heart attack that has nothing to do with the snorkling….she just felt asleep slowly without to much pain…this is what we believe is the best death for her. She died of a sudden heart attack. We love you maman, we came from canada to say goodbye to you, to see you for the last time, we will let a little plaque in memory of you at the beach so our children will be able to see the place where their grand mother died and never forget…

i understand CPR save lives but the thing bout champagne is that these tourist often go there by themselves….it could have been that she was found …if there was someone else there with her im certain they would have seen her struggling …so lets not rush to conclusions like we always seem to do….several times i visited champagne beach and meet just one person in the water….some of these folks just like taking risks

I wonder what are you doing yourself. YOU ARE DOING THE SAME THING – JUMPING TO CONCLUSION. SHE WAS PART OF A TOUR AND NOT BY HERSELF, SHE WAS STRUGGLING NOT BECAUSE SHE WAS DROWNING BUT BECAUSE SHE FELL ILL WHILST DIVING.

What a thing to say!!! ALL THAT CAN BE SAID FOR YOU IS FORGIVE HIM OR HER LORD FOR THEY KNOWETH WHAT THEY DO BUT ARE OBVIOUSLY IGNORANT OF THE CONSEQUENCES, BOTH FOR THE BEAUTIFUL NATURE ISLE AND ITS PEOPLE AND FOR HIMSELF/HERSELF AS IT RELATES TO THEIR HAVING TO ANSWER TO YOU LORD FOR THEIR STATEMENT! Wow!!!!!!! What ignorance, what heartlessness!!!!!!!!!!! You should hang your head in shame, whoever you are!!!!! Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!!!

Do we just comment for its sake? She had problems in the water. Not DA not Govt, fault. People die all over. CPR,Lifeguard flatroads, nice beds don’t make a difference. May her soul rest in peace and may her family come to grips with her passing

Again, if we are encouraging tourists to come to our shores, we must have some sort of protection for their safety. If they are being taken to certain beaches then there need to be life guards on duty.

What signs were in place? did she wonder off on her own? even so, a life guard would be able to redirect her. NOt saying that she would not have died that day, but do we want to be known as a tourist destination that anything goes. Just last week 2 tourists were tied up and robbed at another popular location. We need to put measures in place to safeguard our reputation. Since we are moving from bananas to tourism, then lets do it right.

      March 23, 2012

the lady did not die because of lack of protection !!! she died because she was sick or rather she left the shore dying,,, what could protection or life guards do for that……

        March 14, 2012

Let us suppose she experienced a heart attack whilst diving, do you think that the strong current had anything to do with her death? No news ever reported that she died because of strong currents or may have drowned!

What we need is a state of the art hospital, instead of white house replica in roseau.

People from all over the caribean would come for treatment, we already have a medical university. this lady life could have been safe if we had the hospital.

      @ Anonymous

The autopsy will reveal the cause of her death. It may have had nothing to do with her swimming in the water. It is too bad she was alone then. In time, DA will get a State of the Art hospital. Have patience. First things first.

    • good idea
      March 14, 2012

that sounds actually like a very good idea! A higher-than-elsewhere-standard hospital may really become a nice money machine. I say “may” because investments will have to be made and it will be very expensive to maintain.

But it is certainly worth to consider and calculate that through…

Was CPR performed or were the witnesses too scared of being accused of foul play? CPR saves lives. She could have had a little water in her lungs. How unfortunate!!

Dominicans before all u go shouting off all mouth read and understand. This was not a crime. She got into difficulties, and struggled to the shore. We dont know what the difficulties were was it a cramp caused by a blood clot, a stroke, a heart attack. No one is to blame. However we are sorry she died, but at least she died in the beautifull garden of Eden Dominica. Condolences to her family members.

we really need to put security measures in place if these incidents are to become more frequent especially where crime is concerned. we cannot continue to invite people to our country to enjoy our rugged terrain and not have safety measures in place to oversee them. i dont know but it seems as if those in the positions of interest to think and act on these things are asleep. DDA wuh you say?

    • Kazimi
      March 13, 2012

Condolences to the family and love ones!

The Champagne Bay area south of Pointe Michel is
known for it’s hard currents, I used to fish there
a lot, so I know what am talking about. The currents pushing southwards are the worst ones, before you Know it, you are in Scotshead.
But it can also be that the tourist suffered from some sort of cramps. That can be very problematic if it happen to you while swimming in deep waters.

      • tourist
        March 14, 2012

that is only half true. Tourists only go to dangerous places when they know that there is some level of protection. In the Dominican Republik, e.g., tourists are advised what to do and what not to do. That conveys a level of felt safety.

The problem in Dominica is that tourists are not advised at all and common strategy seems to be to keep the problem secret. That lack of information, that lack of caring for the primary source of income is what deters tourists.

So it the combination of crime and hoe the people in charge respond to it.
