Digicel Dominica responds to LIME’s 4G announcement

With regard to LIME’s announcement that it will be the first to launch “4G” across the Caribbean – I would like to take this opportunity to clear up a few important points.

The motivation for this is to inform consumers and businesses of the facts – and help them cut through some of the grossly misleading marketing messages LIME has put out.

LIME said it is “first” to launch 4G in the region – not the case. Much like it said it was the first to launch Mobile TV – again not the case since Digicel launched it four years ago in Jamaica.

The truth is LIME will use what is referred to as HSPA+ technology for the services it is calling 4G but it is not the first to deploy this technology.

Digicel launched HSPA+ technology in Bermuda and the French West Indies last year (under the banner 3G+). The reason we called it 3G+ is that, at the time, HSPA+ was not considered a 4G technology. However HSPA+ has since been re-classified by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) to be counted as 4G.

HSPA+ technology delivers speeds up to five times faster than traditional 3G technologies currently used by LIME in Jamaica.

So, it is true to say that Digicel already delivers 4G technology – using HSPA+ technology and WiMAX both classified as 4G technologies by the ITU – in the Caribbean (and specifically in the Cayman Islands and Jamaica) and indeed was the “first” to do so.

Digicel is also gearing up to launch HSPA+ technology across the Dutch Caribbean in a matter of weeks, intends to roll out HSPA+ in Jamaica (once the Claro acquisition is approved) and will steadily bring this to other markets in the near future.

LIME’s announcement actually raises more questions than it answers as to its commitment to the customers of the Caribbean. Here is a company that is making a big deal out of upgrading its out of date 2G networks to EDGE. Meanwhile, Digicel has been delivering EDGE services across all of its 32 markets across the Caribbean, Central America and the Pacific since 2008.

Most importantly for the island of Dominica is the following question;

Why has it taken LIME over 3 years to move from GPRS to EDGE.

In fact by LIME’s own admission from their press release “the move from 2G services, to both EDGE and 4G will be like going from riding a bicycle to driving a Ferrari,” as it was a massive step forward for mobile service. This being the case then Digicel in Dominica has had a far superior network for three years at least and furthermore LIME’s customers whom they purport to be doing all this for have been paying for old technology for all this time.

Digicel prides itself on delivering the best value, best service and best network to customers across the globe. That is why we continue to be the first to deliver the best and most innovative technologies to customers having already invested over US$85 million in rolling out HSPA+ and WiMAX services across the region and why we continue to ensure that we are on the side of the customer at all times and in everything we do.

I trust the media will attempt to broach these questions with LIME and be able to bring the answers to the Dominican public who deserve to know the answers to these very important questions.

There is a difference between talking the talk and walking the walk.

Until, the companies start to offer unlimited talk and text, they do not have anything to boast about. So stop saying who did what first because digi has done nothing than cause heart ache. The phones are too expensive and the cost of talk and text to high. Most people must wait for when there is happy hour for them to take advantage. Listen to this. You are abroad where you have unlimited talk and text you text someone in DA, no reply when yo call them they say, “I got the text, but had no credit” daha. On top of that because you call, they want to spend the whole time talking to you on your phone all. Give me a break .. DIGI go and check your vibes and stop talking about who start what. later for you. People need happy hours all the time to at least text.

I truely wonder how many of us who want to eat off each others head over these entities. Have we spent time to truely compare the deals and rates offered by the 2. i suggest we do this and choose the one that is cheaper on your pocket. as for those who talk about LIME bein 20% owned by the state, i say, that doesnt change the fact that i have to pay the 15% VAT on whichever provider topup i use.
I will make one point to those who said digi network is unreliable, both networks have issues on any given day and the most reliable network which ever graced sweet DA was ODL, but bcuz they didnt spend as much on marketing and we being uneducated as we are never realized. As for loyalty, it doesnt change much as we have been ripped off by lime for 140 Yrs. I am a digi customer and as a customer i will share this with you all; postpaid digi to digi 20cents/min , popst paid digi to lime(mobile and fixed) 20cents/min. Postpaid: Lime to digi 45cents/min. prepaid digi to lime 65cents/min. prepaid digi to digi daytime 50cents/min evenings and weekends 25cents/min. analyze and figure out which is in your best interest and you choose. any rates that inst here, check your provider. luv y’all!

dont forget that digicel gives 250 mins for all calls as the minimum postpaid rate

Lime gives 100 mins to lime to Lime+fixed and 50 mins for Lime to Digicel.

So its quite easy for your bill to go over those 50 mins and be charged for the mins.

Digicel costumer can set limits on postpaid account to avoid high billing.

  16. The importance of "Competition"
    May 20, 2011

Whether it is LIME or Degicel, competition is great and will serve Dominicans best interest. Now, having said that Dominicans need to make comments to let both companies know how they feel about the service they provide in terms of cost or actual service. In short use this article analogous to a review on a cell phone device that is typically done on verizon website where people make comments that can steer potential new device buyers in the right direction based on their experience. After reading this article clearly Digicel is in a Public Relations fight with Lime for the Heart and Minds of Lime customers and potential new users. Finally, it would be good to know meaning of the types of services described in this article which will help you make an informed decision.

    May 20, 2011

Ahh!!! Mr. Stanton, common on, LIME must have said some truth why you are on this rebound. You know and Dominicans knw LIME is offering a much better Package, a much better network, and a much better prices than DIGICEL, even if u claim u’ll have 4G. Let me lay down some facts for you. It is a fact, that i can drive all over Dominica and not loose coverage with my LIME phone. It is a fact, that my service hardly goes down with LIME, even during huricane or any bad weather. It is a fact, that LIME is contributing more to the Dominican public than DIGI is. It is a fact, that LIME is more customer focus and centered than DIGI, it is a fact that LIME contributes more to the local economy, than DIGI, esp. thru Jobs. It is a fact that LIME has a local country Manager, compared to you Mr. Stanton, who have no faith in locals, does Mr. John ring a bell – lasted as country manager for less than 2 months (stand to be corrected). I can go on and on, but i am pretty sure some other writer will do….the final analysis, Mr. Stanton, you feel threatened by this new inovation by LIME, that even after you aquire ORANGE, must if not all of the ORANGE customers went over to the LIME network – Thats another fact my brother. And Digi customers keep living everyday. So Mr. Stanton, tell Dominicans the Truth, who will have the better of EVERYTHING???

Amazing how Cable & Wireless/Lime exploited and robbed Dominicans for decades and we’re still patronizing them, because they’re making us think they’re tring to make up by giving us a deal here or there. Our memories are just too short in this country.

Giving back to the community is called PR, people. It’s for their benefit, not ours.

Have we forgotten the days when we were paying long distance rates within Dominica?

I have a business phone that I was paying an arm and a leg for for years, until I caught myself and checked and examined my bill, and confronted them about it. Those charges are gone AND I OWN MY PHONE NOW.

How many of you can say you own your phone, if you have one, or will ever for as long as you have it.?

Long live ANY company that competes against Lime.

    Death to that WICKED company.

    • hmmmmmmmmmmm
      May 20, 2011

You are so right. U hit the nail on the head. Dominicans have memoire poule. Lime used to charge us over $9 to call our family in England…we could call only once or twice a year. They robbed us when they brought in cell phones. Can’t u people remember? When someone called u used 2 pay plus the person paying. Comin on I’m in support of any company comiin into the market to give them compettion. Because it is since AT&T and orange came on the scene they spending all that money in PR.

    May 20, 2011

To all the Digicel lovers out there: Why is that that 90% of you guys still carry around a lime phone as “back-up”? I’m tired of people telling mewhich number you want my Digi or Lime?…

You don’t get that with LIME customers. We only need one phone… Think about that…

    • decisive
      May 20, 2011

my friend it’s only because we had our lime phones first-b4 digicel was introduced to Dominica and all our important business contacts and other information was associated with our lime numbers. Ask yourself- if LIME was there first was truly the better company why wud ppl feel the need 2 aquire a digicel fone? it’s because we were sick and tired of being exploited and jumped at the opportunity of affordable technological development. i know many who-if not for the long standing business/other ties to their lime contact numbers-wud have have done away with it in an instant!

i admit- i have both, but digi was my company of choice. i got lime after, but only cause i got the fone for free! no offense 2 lime patrons but u all need to start speaking honestly about the thievery being practiced by lime. i admire our loyalty as dominicans but shake my head when i see that we’re too ashamed or too “loyal” to let go even when we see the truth.

lol you too foolish! ya’ll LIME customers always crying, oh Im not calling Digi, its too expensive, so we keep two phones to appease our friends who have LIME phones.
you find more people using Digi to call LIME without complaints than vice versa. interconnection is much cheaper from Digi to Lime than Lime to Digi…why is that? hmmmmm

dont be deceived, our LIME phones are because we love our friends and have compassion for their pockets, since we’re all in a hectic ‘salary’ situation in this country

For now, agreed you have better data service (sometimes), so I am with you, but just let LIME come with better service that is affordable, and see how fast I will be supporting my Dominican company which employs my cousins and best friend, instead of you Irish slavemasters who trying to pull the wool over peoples eyes with your Bigger Better nonesense…..

I would be more impressed with the Lime hype if they could treat us with the respect of offering at least one locally manned help desk in Dominica. They have a budget for a full time P.R. person (…says a lot, doesn’t it!) but no money for a Domiinica based help desk.

No, I do not work for Digicel, am not one of their suppliers or contractors or a shareholder.

      CRY CRY BABY GIGI
I JUST CANNOT UNDERSTAND DEM PEOPLE AND THEIR BOLDFACE LIES!

THE RECORD IS STRAIGHT LIME WAS THE FIRST TO INTRODUCE SUCH A SERVICE TO US.

      FACTS ARE STUBBORN INDEED

DIGICEL FACE UP AND STEP UP TO THE COMPETITION

      DIGICEL HAVE YOURSELF RE-BRANDED

CABLES GAVE U A WORKOUT AND NOW LIME MILES AHEAD OF YOU

DIGICEL “ALL DAT BOASTAR CAR CAR SHESS ” DOES NOT WORK ON DOMINICANS AGAIN.

DOI LIKE LIME AND PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS

SPEND MORE TIME AT PUTTING A SOCIAL PROGRAMME INTO PLACE

      AND DIGI STOP COCOCITING LIME

YOU SEE LIME UNDERSTANDS THE MARKET PLACE

STANTON IS DEFINITELY NOT A JEFFREY BAPTISTE

BAPTISTE HAVE THE INTELLECTUAL ADVANTAGE AND HE KNOWS THE SOCIETY AND PEOPLE MUCH BETTER

SO ITS BETTER IF DIGICEL LOOK FOR A HOME GROWN MANAGER TO HEAD THE DOMINICAN OFFICE BECAUSE TRUST ME AS LONG AS JEFFREY IS IN CHARGE OF LIME DIGICEL WILL REMAIN CAR-CAR-RAT

      DATS D HARD REALITY

LOOOK AT HOW MUCH MONEY LIME PUMPING INTO THE ECONOMY

EVERY DAY THE SPEAK ABOUT HOW THEY ARE HELPING OUT ORDINARY DOMINICANS

THEY ALSO GIVE ALOT TO CHARITY AND THEY DONT EVEN TALK ABOUT IT

YESSSSSS LIME DO CARE FOR US

AGAIN FACTS ARE STUBBORN THINGS !

Thank you Richard! Thank you for pointing out what LImE really is!

I love my Digicel BB and my unlimited EDGE service AND my unlimited talk I use through prepaid…all very affordable.
