Government tackles domestic violence and abuse

The Dominica government has assured its commitment to legislation that will help lessen incidence of domestic violence and support victims of the abuse.

Speaking at a workshop on Wednesday minister for gender affairs, Gloria Shillingford, said she anticipates the adoption of the domestic violence legislation here.

The seminar focusing on violence prevention is expected to go on until Friday 7 December, and coincides with a 16-day campaign against gender violence. The Dominica Planned Parenthood Association and Caribbean Make Action Network, Dominica are spearheading the meeting at Prevo Cinemall.

The Gender Affairs Minister said the enactment of domestic violence legislation would “significantly impact the targeted persons and in so doing, bring about desired behavior changes, which will it is hoped, lessen the incidents of domestic violence in society.”

It would also foster “peace and harmony” in the Caribbean, according to Shillingford.

It’s about time this issue is addressed. Domestic violence and abuse of all kinds is a major problem in DA and most time the individual being abused have no place to turn for help. Police officers need to step it up and start taking reports of abuse seriously. I had one friend who was beaten so badly by her boyfriend some years ago. She made several trips to the Possie police station to report this and because her boyfriend was friends with all the officers they did nothing about it. Thankfully the inspector at the time and I were good friends, so I had to ask to meet with him and brought her directly to him to make the report. The matter was taken to court and she was compensated. I say this simply to make the point that the police officers need to take seriously their duty to protect and serve the public.

    verbal abuse is very bad.

you can actually see when the demon takes over.

According to Miracle on Q95, Christ help them….”deep down they are good”.

They just dont seem to understand that the way to keep out the evil “overtake” is self control…self control….self control.

sometimes too, a wicked conscience needs no accuser. They are like loose cannons….
and when they sober down they go about as if everybody should excuse them…..

Demon possession in more rampant than we can imagine.

And I am talking about both man and woman.

Three things should be taken into consideration.

      (1) Most of these problems come from OUR OWN FALLEN NATURE which was inherited from Adam. That is why we must be “born again” by receiving Christ as our Savior and learn to “walk in the Spirit”.

      (2) Beyond this there are problems which are the results of DEMONIC INFLUENCE from without as a result of bad company, reading bad literature, indulging in bad T.V. shows, DVDs, and internet websites, etc.

      (3) But make no mistake about this. DEMON POSSESSION is real. It can happen when people open themselves up to it by alcohol or drug abuse, pornography, immorality, dabbling in the occult, etc.
Possession is when a demon enters the individual’s body and takes control either partially or totally
      from the inside.

I encourage you to read the Testament to see how Christ and His servants recognized possession and how they dealt with it. The Savior has not changed. He still sets the captives free!

      Sincerely, Rev. Donald…

you know what no one can’t do nothing about that because not all dosmestic violence get report because of lack of courage, confidence in the police and some wemen just love what the other person is doing to them because you will help them and they will still return because they say they can’t live without one another and because of children and soo on

Firstly, the picture is a very feminist biased one. Secondly, I look forward to going to this campaign, hope it will also target the abuses of women against men as well. We have not been fair in this country. Too often men are blamed for domestic abuse, women must equally share in the blame as well.

In conclusion, domestic abused should be curbed on both sides. Men must respect women and women must learn to control their tongues .

ADMIN This is just a generic photo for the story. SMH

Are you actually saying that it’s just as bad for a woman to talk nasty to a man as it is for a man to beat that woman? Or that women are asking for it? I hope I misunderstood you. Girlfriends that were nasty to me I broke up with, because I am a man with self control instead of a child who can’t control his fists.

And now that I am married, if my wife says something that makes me angry, I tell her so, and we work it out, or I let it go and forgive her. There is NO excuse for violence, except in self-defense against violence someone else started.

So I hope I misunderstood you. Emotional and verbal abuse are bad too, but it does not excuse violent abuse nor is it as bad.

      1. Stop complaining, maybe that was the only picture DNO got at the time. I think the new legislation would be for the protection of both genders.

      2. ‘women must learn to control their tongues .” What do you mean by that??? If what the woman telling you burning you, give her an answer then turn your back and leave, or just don’t answer and walk away. So if what she says offends you she deserve a punch in her face??? Your name suggest some muslim philosophy, GET OVER YOURSELF.

spoken like a real Woman…….Im not saying a man should react physically to verbal abuse….but it is EQUALLY the womans responsibility to MITIGATE the outcome of domestic dispute…

Some women need to get over themselves as well.

It is well known that woman strength is in their mouth and man strength is in their hands. A RECIPIE FOR DISASTER!

      • Abu Sulayman
        December 8, 2011

I hope the legislation would be for the “protection” of both genders. I am aware of how we think here in this country.

Yes they must control their tongues, provocation is against the law as well. It is equally wrong for a woman to provoke a man continuously with her tongue until the man gets so angry that he loses his mind (temporary insanity). You mentioned about don’t answer and walk away, not easy if you have a woman 1 a.m nagging and you want to leave and she blocking the doorway preventing you from leaving. NO ONE SAYS SHE DESERVE A PUNCH IN HER FACE. BOTH PARTIES MUST WORK AT PREVENT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN THEIR HOME, END OF STORY!!!

You are judging me by my nickname? No miss, this is not a personal column, let’s deal with issues.

This is very good news. My neighbor above continually beats his wife – in the yard and behind closed doors. When told to stop he just replies ‘hush your mouth’. Who can we report this man to and get the authorities involved to stop this disgusting behavior?

    • MIE
      December 8, 2011

CAll the authority nuh, stupes. it can only take a neighbour to help another, whether it be good or bad, although we women are terrible with our tongues you all know, and in return we get the hand, men women behave.

        December 8, 2011

Thank you M.I.E, ‘women can be terrible with their tongues,’ hope some of these people on the blog can recognize this as well. Many times the police do not want to interfere with domestic affairs it seems.
