Jungle Bouyon Fever for 2011 Miami Broward Carnival

Riverland Mas Presents “JUNGLE BOUYON FEVER “ for its 2011 Miami Broward One Carnival Band.

This year’s theme evolved from the 1980’s creation of Bouyon music, a musical genre developed from an infusion of traditional songs, dances, and beats in the Commonwealth of Dominica, such as Bèlè, Jing-ping, Quadrille, Chanté mas, Lapo kabwit, Mazook, with a twist of Cadance, Zouk, and other styles of Caribbean music, like Soca and Calypso.

It is a very unique style of music created by the W.C.K. band (Known then as Cornell, Wakas and Keith) of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

The Group’s president Elka Cools-Latigue, explains the reason for choosing this year’s theme. “We normally choose themes to suit Dominica’s culture, people, music and lifestyle. This year, I was looking through some old WCK CDs and found that song, ‘Jungle Bouyon Fever.   It suited Dominica perfectly,” he said.

Revelers at Miami Broward Carnival

This year the band has three sections for the first time, all of which depict an aspect of Dominica’s Bouyon Music’s rhythm and culture. There is also a special section, featuring the traditional Sensay costumes, which will be competing in the individual costume section.

“We will always portray something pertaining to our country to increase the awareness of the Dominican culture in North American festivals,” Elka said.

The three sections are:

Bush Doctors – These Bush Doctors will be holding down the fort and taking care of business. By trying to regulate de temperature, they are bush doctors, who will be administering “de natural medicine, de bush medicine, is de best medicine”.

Bouyon Fever – These carnival revelers are on fire.  A red-hot shimmering haze blazing into the jungle. The word Bouyon is defined as a stew, a mix of flavors and spices. This describes the music, a Bouyon, out of many came one new unique beat.  And it has become popular in other islands of the Caribbean, this new type of music emphasizes on the use of modern technology with a strong keyboard rhythmic patterns.

Jungle Bouyon – Jamming down the road, the jungle pulsates with the rhythms of bouyon, there is fire every where, deep in the heart of the jungle the inhabitants are on fire, a raging fever, a fever for Mas, a fever for bacchanal, a fever for the Pounding Rhythms of Bouyon music backed up by the W.C.K. Band and Blackberry Sound Crew. It will be a cultural infusion.

This year is the 7th year Riverland Mas has organized a carnival band for Miami’s Carnival. The group’s founder/President Elka Cools-Latigue said, “Although I am in the front line of this all, it has been a team effort “

The group is calling all Dominicans to come to Miami/Broward carnival on October 09, 2011 to celebrate in Dominican style, on the streets of Miami.  It will be a festival to be remembered. Space is limited.

The best costumes of the whole carnival was the original locally made sensay costume which looked like the flag of Dominica won by Medina Germain and BogoRoy.

No mention of the true Bouyon king Rah so much bias in this faded bougoisie article. Wonder where failed ck would be without Rah king of Bouyon?

Common! What is so “bougoise” as you claim in the artice. Folks are trying to promote DA culture and because Rah is not mentioned you find the article to be problematic. This may be an innocent omission. Rah was and still is instrumental in Bouyon music. Do you have issues with the writer of this article or the surname of the president of the Riverland Mas? Let me assure you that D’cans from all walks of life participate in this band and are grateful for the leadership shown. I am certainly not a bourgeois. Oh by the way, out of DA that old Bourgeois thing has no significance. Why are we do damn negative? Look out and see the positives. I will provide a ticket next year for you to participate in the DA band in the Miami carnival. Maybe you will then see things differently. I may be unloading on you but I am frustrated with “negatives”.

I think we as a people must first think, get the historical facts togather before we open our mouths. When WCK was formed Rah was not part, neither did he have anything to do with the naming of the band. The group in FL has been at this for some time and always try to make it a grand dcan even, where does Bourgeois fir into this cycle. Do you have an issue with the writer?? Or you just society bitter.

“Pounding Rhythms of Bouyon music backed up by the W.C.K. Band and Blackberry Sound Crew” Miami local Dj’s that’s been there as support all these years don’t get any recognition.
