LIAT announces activities to mark its 55th anniversary

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, October 04, 2011 – Regional airline LIAT will on October 16, 2011 mark 55 years of continuous service to the peoples and countries of the Eastern Caribbean; and THE Caribbean Airline has planned a series of activities to mark the occasion.

Corporate Communications Manager Desmond Brown said the week of activities will commence with a tour, by senior regional journalists, of the LIAT Hangar and Operations Control on Friday October 14. This will be followed by a press conference at LIAT Headquarters.

On Sunday, October 16 (LIAT’s birthday), employees will join the congregation of the Holy Family Cathedral, Michael’s Mount in St. John’s for the Anniversary Church Service.

Mr. Brown said the LIAT Chairman, Dr. Jean Holder and senior Company executives are expected to take part in various activities during the anniversary week to provide information on LIAT’s history and inform about the Company’s plans for the future.

In addition to the corporate activities, Mr. Brown said the Company’s employees, through the LIAT Social Club, will also be hosting several events including a Queen Pageant at Grant Royal Antiguan Beach Resort on October 8; Softball Cricket on October 12; Football on October 13; Debate, Games Night and Karaoke on October 14; a Mad Hatter Fete on October 15 and a Beach Splash on October 16.

“The activities are geared to bring the staff together, building camaraderie in healthy, friendly competition; and to improve our day to day working relationship,” Social Club Committee member and LIAT’s longest serving employee Mrs. Nutilia Simon said.

“It will also portray LIAT in a positive way as we continually express our sincere thanks to our loyal supporters,” Mrs. Simon added.

LIAT, known then as Leeward Island Air Transport Service Ltd., was founded in Montserrat in October 1956 by St. Kitts-born Mr. Frank Delisle.

LIAT has grown over the years and is now the main mode of transportation for people travelling between the islands, serving more than 20 destinations.

LIAT operates more than 800 flights per week from Santo Domingo in the north to Guyana in the south – providing the most extensive inter-island network of any carrier in our region.  Last year LIAT moved an estimated 950,000 passengers.

Happy Birthday LIAT you have proven to be the best in the air that continues to serve Dominicans (UNGRATEFUL PEOPLE). We will never forget when you brave the weather to get us to our destination when American chickened out. Your agents are understanding and helpfull, you’ll always be in my prayers, god bless.

LIAT should be ashame of themself after 55years moving passengers to and fro they still unable to treat their customers with pride, after 55yrs passengers are still being left stranded they are place in a hotel at the passenger expence without food and attention esspecially students who are so vulnarable,so i dont see no reason LIAT celebrating a milestone shame shame shame.

Liat offered the public, 55% off on all tickets purchased 2 weeks or so ago for travel throughout the month of October. This promotion was applicable to all destinations. Last week, they offered another special for travel throughout mid-November. Some of us were happy to take advantage of those cheap tickets.

Just so you know “frequent flyer” the Government of dominica does not make financial contributions to liat.liat is controlled by three caribbean islands Barbados,St.vincent and antigua. congrats

Can Liat say why is it BVI Airways lands in Dominica with a 14 knots tail wind in the evening time and when the flight from St. Lucia comes in with the same amount of tail wind, it turns around and cancels its flight? Isn’t it true that a DASH 8 lands Slower than a JET Stream, especially seeing that the DASH 8 can even come to a complete stop way much faster than a jet stream? LIAT if you are the Caribbean Airline, why do you always treat “DOMINICA” this way? Why should our Governments have to give you money to run a business that has been in existence for, “55 years”? Why is it so difficult for you to make profits and to properly be managed? LIAT, hearts of to the Governments of St. Vincent, Antigua and Barbados. Will ECCA please help the other islands LIAT claims to be less PROFITABLE, by granting LICENCES to those who wants to come in “Legitimately” at NO COST to any of our Governments? Liat NEED TO CLEAN UP ITS ACT.

Do some research & make sure your ‘act’ is clean before telling others to clean theirs.

this is what monopoly does and these are the thing we must demonstrate about let force them to fly to dominica and on arrival over the airport they cxannot land ; well yes they will remove dominica from their destination but another airline will come in and we will law the rules too

    • October 4, 2011

Frequent flyer, BVI Airways is a smaller aircraft and it has enough runway for its size rather than LIAT that will run off our small runway. Please get some sense in your thick greasy head and dont judge LIAT.
