Foster and Alma Joseph, 50 years and going strong

The Josephs at their renewal of vows ceremony

For many 50 years may sound like an awfully long time but for Foster and Alma Joseph it is simply the amount of time they have been living together as a married couple.

In an interview with Dominica News Online the two talked about their marriage and the glue that held it together.

“Work things out and admit when you are wrong,” Mr. Joseph stated while his wife looked on with approval.

The two remember when they first met more than 50 years ago. “There was an open air service in Fond Cole one Tuesday night,” Mrs. Joseph recalled. “I was coming from work and he invited me to attend the Wednesday night. So I went.”

The Josephs on their wedding day 50 years ago

Mr. Joseph remembers the Tuesday night that would change his life forever. “When I saw her coming something just told me that she was going to be my wife,” he stated. “So I invited her to attend the service the following night. And she agreed.”

He said although he had not formally proposed marriage to her that night, he told her, “If anyone tells you to marry them, just say no.”

Mrs Joseph pitched in. “And, I agreed,” she said.

And as the old saying goes, ‘the rest was history’ and the two tied the knot on January 28, 1962.

Asked what attracted to her husband, Mrs Joseph said, “Because he is a wonderful person. I am married to the most wonderful person in the world. I never regretted marrying him. If I had to marry him again, I would do it more than one time.”

The deeply religous couple said they have placed Yahweh at the center of their marriage and that they have always worked out their differences in an amicable way. “We have our differences, you know,” Mr. Joseph said. “And when they surface we talk about it, we work it out and we hold hands and kiss and everything is over.”

Mrs. Joseph agrees. “We work things out and we never to go sleep with something on our minds,” she pointed out.

The renewal of vows kiss

The two agreed that they never took advice from anyone concerning personal matters between them. “We always worked things among ourselves because if we have a problem between us, other people might give us the wrong advise,” Mr. Joseph said. “So if we were having something between us and a brother or sister came, we waited till they left and we worked out our problem between us.”

And so surrounded by friends, relatives and love ones the Josephs gathered on Sunday to renew their marrital vows and reinforce their love for each other in what they described as a surprise. “We did not expect that,” Mrs Joseph stated. “It was a real surprise and a very good one too.”

Congratulations on the celebration of your golden jubilee, 50 years of marital bliss. This is a milestone and more. You have the right approach to a loving and happy marriage. This is true love! I love what he said to her about if anyone asks her to marry say no and she agreed! This made me laugh. He knew about his future marriage plans. What a man, a husband! What a lady, a wife! Bet they have a few children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

50 YEARS IS A LONG TIME FOR ANYTHING TO LAST AND FOR THEM IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT WITH TRUST AND BELIEF IT CAN BE ACHIEVE. GRANDPA YOU ARE SETTING THE BAR SO HIGH FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME AND BAGGIO IT TIGHT FOR US TO TOP THAT ONE LOL. I WISH YOU GUYS ALL THE BEST AND I HOPE YOU LIVE TO SEE 50 MORE. I WAS LATE TO THE CEREMONY BUT I COULD SEE HOW PROUD YOUR CHILDREN AND THE REST OF THE FAMILY AND YOUR FRIENDS WERE OF YOUR GUYS. IT SERVES AS A FORM OF MOTIVATION TO US THAT IT IS ALL POSSIBLE. YOU HAVE ALWAYS SET THE RIGHT EXAMPLE FOR US AND WE ARE VERY GRATEFUL FOR THAT.

Congratulations Mr & Mrs Joseph. God bless you in another 50 years of marriage.

These days we young people can’t even make it to 5 years.. we thrive on “divorce” at the slightest disagreement, and we always look to our peers for advice, when we should be looking at our Lord to guide us thru.

Your 50 years of marriage is a clear example that True Love does exists.

  30. TRUTH
    January 31, 2012

This is God’s doing he put them together so that NO MAN can put asunder. But in some cases people put people together that is the reason for so many divorces these day and God is not in it. Once God is not in the center of our lives everything MUST fail. So people put the almighty in all you do and everything will be alright. BLESSINGS*****************
