Gay cruise company clears air on Dominica incident

The company behind a “gay” cruise that caused a bit of a stir in Dominica and resulted in two cruise passengers being fined by the local courts, has been seeking to clear the air on what actually happened.

The cruise was organized by Atlantis Events, a Southern California company that specializes in gay travel.

On its Atlantis Event Incorporated FaceBook page, the company’s President Rich Campbell apologizes “for the late post”, explaining that “ we have been at sea for the past 18 hours with limited internet access”.

Here is the rest of what the Atlantis Events president had to say about the matter:

“We appreciate the comments on this board regarding the incident in Dominica yesterday, but would sincerely ask that most of you get the facts correct before condemning Atlantis or Dominica for what happened. Here are the facts:

Yesterday morning around 9:30 am two of our guests were seen engaging in a sexual act outdoors on their balcony in full public view of the port and town.
Not only did many of the residents witness the act, several of our guests saw this incident as well.
The local authorities responded to a complaint by several residents.
The two gentlemen were arrested on a misdemeanor charge of public indecency and detained overnight.
They appeared in front of the local magistrate this morning, paid a small fine, and were released in full.

Please understand that the complaint and subsequent arrests had nothing to do with the guests’ sexual orientation, nor was any “anti-gay” law invoked.
These guests were engaged in behavior that is inappropriate in any port of call, or major city for that matter.
The guests were never left on their own.
We had both representatives from Atlantis and Celebrity cruises with them at all times during their ordeal and had our local representatives look after them last night.
Furthermore, we worked closely with the US Embassy in Barbados to assure that their safety was always being monitored.

Atlantis had 2000 guests in port yesterday in Dominica and most of them had an outstanding time visiting the country.
Celebrity Cruises has been extremely supportive, working with Atlantis to insure these guests’ safety and security despite their detention in Dominica.
We commend them for their unwavering support through this incident.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Rich Campbell
President, Atlantis Events, Inc.”

According to the Associated Press news agency, the presence of gay cruises in the Caribbean has riled several conservative islands including Jamaica and Grenada, where anti-sodomy laws are enforced with strong backing from religious groups.

AP quotes Cruisemates.com, explaining that no gay cruise lines sail to Jamaica or Barbados for fear of homophobia and possible violence.

It said other places like the U.S. Virgin Islands welcome gay cruises.

In 2010, the Cayman Islands rejected the arrival of an Atlantis gay cruise amid protests from religious groups even though homosexuality is legal on the archipelago.

The fact that the men having sex pales in comparison to the fact that this episode uncovered the prostitute mentality of many dominicans including so called christians who see nothing wrong in 2 grown men engaging in sodomy PUBLICLY, once there is money involved they want to remain quiet. At the same time people are taking prison and paying $10,000 for smoking 1 marijuana joint.

Those of us in the United States just need to boycott Domenica all together. Maybe once the ungrateful residents of that country realize how much we support their economy, they may change their view. There are far better and more developed islands in the Carribbean.

God made all men equal. It is not up to us to reject His work.
There was a time when the black man was treated with fear, rejection and hate also. If a man is kind treat him with kindness. 1998 men came to Dominica with kindness.
No fighting. No stealing. No prostitutes. No drunks. No abuse.

Now imagine if 2000 “straight men” men arrive in Dominica!!!!!

We welcome all of God’s creations who have love and not violence in their heart.

Seems like a good business fior Dominica- allow the gay cruise every week, let the people bogger on deck, charge them $4800 a couple multiply by 300 couples-ensure children are away from the location . That is 1.4 million extra dollars. Life must go on.

Yes, you know that guy that grew up with the perfect family.. He was the perfect kid, kept to himself and and as he grew older it became apparent he was /is gay?

They have it made in the U.S now they are all over television, you can’t turn a TV station without seeing their presence. That’s what it’s all about.

I think it was unintended. What they really wanted was to put Dominica under international radar to effectively change local law governing boggaring. That’s their goal, but these two gays got in their way, couldn’t resist their learned id10tic defective behavior. It really happened! and it’s against the law in Dominica.

      @ Holiday Island Man

They have taken the word “gay” from us, the entire world. Gay, means happy. Some people’s surname are “Gay”. Consider how they feel. We cannot be happy about that.
They water down the word of homosexual and call it gay pride. This means that we are happy people and proud of what we do. I am so angry about this. Worst yet, consider what God thinks. Always think God and what will Jesus say.

      • Gaysha
        March 22, 2012

Toneh…I agree. during carnival and the dances, limes whatever you want to call them ppl are practically naked. On FB there wa a Picture of “Yellow” spreading her legs naked and the US Government did not charge a soul. And yes FB had laws againt that. If they we’re simply exposed why ot atleast give a warning first? I personnal think they were targetted because of their sexual orientation. For months DUMinicans were complaining about the gay ship coming to DA so they had to find something to whine about. FYI I do support that Dominica’s laws.

Let’s not say carnival is carnival…then we can say exposure is exposure…let’s be fair and treat people the way we want to be treated.

        I am Dominican!!

This is another topic for debate. But what happen in Dominica doesnt justify any form of indecency in our country. But it sounds like you are using the nakedness of people in carnival as an excuse for what these gay men did as a reason to justify their actions. I personally am against two men or two women being together its wrong and who you are what you do, should not be exposed in our faces. God hates it, I hate it and so it alot of of people that believe in Adam and Eve and not Adam and Steve.

    • peeping
      March 22, 2012

Do you ever listen to the radio news or think before speaking? buggery is an offence that has to go through a longer process than the misdemeanor. The men has to return back home so the courts facilitated them by going through a shorter process, since we have no intention to keep there here any longer than necessary. Add that up now.

BS…..when people travel abroad and get caught with drugs they serve jail time in that country. There are so many Americans and Canadians in jail on drug possession while on holiday in jails in Asia, Jamaica, South America……So no excuse. This will go out on all the networks and internet blogs and is a strong indictment of those two men. Nobody wants to see anything like this and the president, who I assume is gay himself, says so. Glad to hear it! I know many people use the Bible to condemn us gay people, but I also know that a lot of other people have a son, daughter, grandson, neighbor, friend, relative, loved one who is gay and I think it’s great how the president targeted the reasonable commenters. That’s what impressed me too. It’s not Jamaica, where I was once scared for my life for being gay. I hope Rouseau continues to improve the services there, maybe a few inviting bars along the waterfront, lol. They don’t have to be gay.

I would love the Canadian Media, even my MP and MPP to get it and they will. This, too, should teach them a lesson that there are people in the West Indies who will not put up this type of immorality. Many of us in Canada oppose this so-called gay pride parade and on a Sunday, the Lord’s Day including so-called homosexual and lesbian marriage.
Our Lord said: “The rulers of the world have condemned themselves.” They have and they are too ignorant morally and spiritually to know it but they will find out, be it on their death bed when they are faced with their eternal judgment.

Now that the air is clear, can we get back to asking the Prime Minister what makes more sense.Should we have taken that 20 million plus dollars and invested in some proper crime scene investigation equipment or should we build a supposedly 20 plus million dollar presidential palace (as if the old one wasn’t big enough) and then still have the nerve to tell us stupid Dominican who don’t know our left foot from our right that we should take pride in that.It seems like everywhere around the world people have began to speak out against injustices committed against them by the people they put faith in to ‘lead’ them and look out for their best interests.I mean God know how many of our homes, vehicles and properties have been vandalized and it all blows in the wind because the police are untrained and unequipped to deal with the situations. How can the chief of police sit back and say crime isn’t on the rise? When I was younger you were scared to let someone roll your joint because you would hear stories of people getting ‘sprang’.Now all these young boys sniffing it and smoking it, then go commit all these crimes. We are getting blacklisted on tourist website sites because of the rapid increase in violence on the island, and the minister of tourism doesn’t seem to really care.I guess he’s just getting paid to live the good life. The government has the resources on hand right now to fight the cocaine problem in dominica, but they choose to have a war on weed farmers instead.it all boils down to who can afford to pay off the top brass. It’s just a pity that people on the island aren’t making as big a deal of it,or protesting outside the state house. In the meantime our reputation as warm, green, beautiful, and people friendly destination is going down then drain…the big heads are lining their wallets, not caring for the worse hardships the future generation is going to face.no local produce exports, higher gas prices, low tourism income=Drug kingpins runnning the island

THANK YOU FOR CLEARING THE AIR ON THE ISSUE..SO YOU IDIOTS STOP GIVING DOMINICA BAD NAME..THE FACT ARE IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THEIR SEXUAL PREFERENCE..ITS ALL ABOUT BREAKING THE LAW..IN NEW YORK WHERE GAY MARRIAGE IS LEGAL,THEY WOULD BE ARRESTED FOR HAVING SEX IN PUBLIC.SOME OF THE GAY PEOPLE MAKE THINGS BAD FOR THE THOSE WHO ARE GAY BUT BEHAVE WITH RESPECT FOR LAW,AND DO THEIR THING IN PRIVATE.

What if these two were cheating on their partners? Why were they so horny? An old man and a young boy.

Yes, this part of the world is very dangerous for gay people, whether they’re having sex on a balcony or just walking down a street. Their biggest mistake was boarding the ship when they knew the destination. But I do love the photo of the curious women lined-up to gawk at the nefarious, inhuman creatures.

The men were not charged for their sexual orientation…..so how are we to enforce the buggery law? Its obvious that buggery is linked to ones sexual orientation. All u think all u smart with the words all u using………actions speak louder than words.

  46. March 22, 2012

I DIDN’T READ A STATEMENT LIKE,”ATLANTIS AND CELEBRITY CRUISES WISH TO CONDEMN THE DISTATEFUL BEHAVIOR OF THE TWO MEN AND PROMISES THE GOVERNMENT AND PEOPLE OF DOMINICA THAT THE BEHAVIOR DISPLAYED BY THOSE MEN WILL NEVER OCCUR IN YOUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY AGAIN.”

“These guests were engaged in behavior that is inappropriate in any port of call, or major city for that matter.”

So can all the people who are saying that Dominica was wrong, please understand this statement please. And this statement did not originate from a Dominican.

    March 22, 2012

Thank you for clearing the name of Dominica. The essential points being that…

    1. the complaint and subsequent arrests had nothing to do with the guests’ sexual orientation, nor was any “anti-gay” law invoked.
    2. these guests were engaged in behavior that is inappropriate in any port of call, or major city for that matter.
    3. Atlantis had 2000 guests in port yesterday in Dominica and most of them had an outstanding time visiting the country.

I am relieved that nothing further became of the incident. The two idiots broke the law and haves been delt with accordingly. But why take it to the next level and say that the boats – the whole lot of them should be banned from Dominica? If everytime Dominicans form the fool overseas those countries were to ban all Dominicans, how would that pan out? Who would be crying foul? Not the same people who are using this incident to call for a total ban? Get real!

To all the people commenting about the negative publicity for Dominica, Atlantis made it quite clear that the individuals were engaging in sexual acts and behaviors that is NOT PERMITTED IN ANY PORT OF
CALL. The LAW is the LAW!! good job enforcing the law. People will respect you more for upholding the law than for bending it whether it is for thiefs, liars, robbers and politicians!!

what sexual act?…were they stroking one another…because they said that they weren’t having sex….

is not indecent exposure they were charged for nuh?…if they were just hugging and kissing that’s not wrong..it grosses me out but…a man and woman can do it so can they… every body who has not accepted Jesus as their savior is on their way to hell….it’s wrong of them to be naked though….

    • March 22, 2012

Your kind need to return to kindergarten to get an elementary education, because it appears that you cannot read.

You lack understanding; how can you ask such stupid questions, when you read where the organizers of the trip admitted that these people indeed engaged in a sexual act, which many residence, Dominican, and other passengers on the ship saw!

Are you really that ignorant, or you simply want to different, just like the idiot who suggests there are no pictures to prove they were engaged in sex!

What is wrong with some of you Dominicans?

fransisco man wah go…no i wasn’t trying to be different..i really didn’t know that sexual act meant only sex… i thought other sexual behaviors such as fondling could constitute as a sexual act..

@tiny, its not that you didnt know. ITs just that you always have to give an opposing view for the sake of opposing. first few times its cute but to continue this means you seriously need help. What your parents did to you really left some deep scares. I suspect its not only your parents but you blame them for not being there to protect you. It happens to a lot of people so get help now!
