“Not true” – Austrie over Laplaine housing statements

Minister Austrie. *GIS photo

Housing Minister Reginald Austrie is refuting claims that the people of Laplaine have not benefited from government’s ongoing housing program.

He told a Cabinet town hall meeting in Laplaine this week that some Laplaine residents have uttered statements to the effect that the community has not benefited.

“It is not true that Laplaine or the south east have not benefited from the housing program,” he said.

According to Austrie, government has built 12 homes in that community for individuals who lived in dangerous areas.

“If you know for a fact we have spent over $15 million around the country you should say thank God your neighbors got a house and yours will soon come,” he said.

Austrie said while the economic situation is “tight”, the Dominica Labour Party has been the only government who had the “guts and the energy and the foresight to tackle the housing need of the country”.

I have two questions and one comment. Mr. Austrie, are you saying that when the Government which the people voted to develop the country builds 12 houses we shoud say thank you for the favour? Mr. Austrie what is the meaning of the economy ‘tight? Because according to the prime minister Dominica is doing vey well.

It is sad that instead of focusing on development, ministers including the prime minister have to spend so much time defending allegations, answering maypwee and doing damage control. Something must be wrong!!

Lets face it people, La Plaine village has some of the most beautiful and strong houses in Dominica.. There are no trailers, no little shacks as some I see in some ares here in the VI. If the government has to build houses for people in La Plaine, I want to ask the person who ask the question, Who in La Plaine needs a house. Repairs yes and I heard they repaired some houses. People of Dominica, let us allow those who need to get help. What we need hon. Peter is for the people to be motivated to go back to agriculture, instead of running away to Roseau and other neighbouring islands. The extension officers need to work harder.

If you’re going to criticize people for their ideas and actions you should at least offer some of your ideas in place. Also DA was the last island to be colonized in the Caribbean and the first for internal self-rule, we are one of the only islands left with the original Carib people and one of few to survive without major tourism. That backward mentality you’re talking about is what has keep Dominica independent, proud and free. We can be hungry but will not starve, can argue but not war, can struggle but not suffer. Like ‘dice’ said On My Own!

I strongly belive your comments need to be stated the other way, Folks like you need to travel then come back and speak, Get off the dark man, for crying out sake get into the light my friend and smell what is cooking cause it seems as if those dominican presently living in Dominica must be druged or having psychological issues! Guess u might be one off them

In case you still question the involvement of DNO politiking with their news reporting, doubt no more. Here they are telling us what took place at a DLP townhall meeting at Laplaine, but I am yet to see anything published by them at a UWP public meeting, which had a massive crowd and in the very city of Roseau, where no form of transportation was required by DNO. If they did not want to talk about the large crowd at list they could have said that there was a strong police presence taking photos. ME DO NO FOOL DNO

DNO hold strong keep up the good works and bring forth the info. as it comes to light the bigger and brighter minds both in and out of Dominica appreciate the work u doing, bringing us the stories as they happen and for creating an avenue which enables us to share our thoughts and voice our opinions on what’s going on in our country.

This housing revolution is a slap in the faces of the hard working tax payers of this country. What the government is adopting when they build these shacks for the less fortunate is thats its ok if you decide not to fend for yourself the government will fend for you at the cost of others. We need more social programs to help the under previlage but not as its being done right now. We need training programs , teach them how to sew. Provides loans for the purchase of these machines. teach them how to fish and allocate the funds for the equipment. teach them how to farm, provide scholarships for their kids. Austrie you all need to go back to the drawing board.

    • Nice!!!!
      June 3, 2011

Though I do agree that people should be taught to fend for themselves, some of the people who receive the houses are indeed deserving of them. Furthermore, there are several programs that have been implemented that have taught people skills (e.g., sewing, electrical wiring, plumbing). Many of the people who learn these skills either use them to earn money while others never use the skills. Yes, it is true that we cannot expect the money of the tax payers to support everyone who is less fortunate or refuses to find something productive to do, but it has to start somewhere.

give a strong body man a house then he will want a car and after clothes, food etc, i say create the opportunity for that man to work and he will buy everything he needs. his moral and self esteem will be elevated making him a proud and secure man…

yet the government give the house to the strong body man and give the jobs to the chinese and the barbadians and to their friends who do the biddigs behind the curtain with the devil.

so the poor must beg beg beg beg beg ….

    Reggie,

Stop taking people for fools. What is housing without the basic facilities of water, toilet, bathroom in 2011. You may be providing a shelter to those who you want, but do not say that you are providing housing.

By the way, I have not been hearing you in recent times. The citizen’s forum last Monday gave you guys a wake up man.

What DNO? You profess to be a news agency and people have to invite you to cover the news?? Interesting!! What was your reason for not publishing the picture and the name of the other person or persons arrested in the passport scam just like you did with Dr. Wiltshire?

Everybody thinks they have common sense weeeeeeeee!! it is so obvious, Dominica is small we already know anyway and that just makes you lose credibility as a media house! But then again I don’t think you are trained as a journalist since you are so unprofessional in your response to your readership, and I don’t expect you to post that so I won’t even look for it.

Admin is not professional at all. Please learn from Daily Mail, UK and Huffington Post. Their website is http://www.dailymail.co.uk and http://www.huffingtonpost.com. You need to study how they react to the same comments.

        ADMIN
Ive been on those sites before can you submit others?

      June 3, 2011

DNO I am by no means criticizing – I am just asking –“ is that the way it works?. The media need to be invited to a public function? I would appreciate your response DNO. I thought that the media would jump at an opportunity such as the citizen forum. I’m sure that DNO is fully aware that the DNO medium is propably the most popular media house for Dominicans – particularly those abroad.

ADMIN: None of us were made aware of the event. The Citizens Forum however alerted other news media about coverage but not us. Despite that, we did obtain a report from the event from a correspondent attached to another media house which was made aware of the event. I do not wish to be here addressing something that is obvious: If you expect us to become God and psychics to know about everything that is going on then you’re depending on the wrong newspaper. Commonsense would dictate that if a media house is not informed of an event then chances are coverage will be missed. Sometimes we are not informed of a particular event by its organisers but someone, not associated with the event would alert us. In this case, we were never invited formally, never alerted by anyone associated with or not associated with the event. This is not the first time a media house misses an event because it was not informed, that’s why organisations have designated PR officers to inform media houses on happenings. Probably the organisers do not want DNO at their event, but if that were true, we still produced a story from it after the fact, but no one saw that. Next time, send us an email or call and do not expect us to be psychic.

DNO, While I understand what you are saying, using the whole ‘common sense’ tag is unbecoming. Don’t insult people’s intelligence that way. It’s unpprofessional. Tony Astaphan started doing it a few years ago, and now people think it’s okay to let it ‘slip in’ that other people are not educated as they are. Stop it please. Explain yourself without being condescending.
