see for example, the canefield cliff. for years we have had problems with falling rock, mud and heavy water when ever it rains heavily. why didnt the Engineers or Government get the chineese to break down or scrape some of the the top of the cliff before working on the road in that area??? are they going to wait until someting happens as a result of the cliff before they start working on it???? the Road should not be directly underneath the cliff. it is just Dangerous.

To be positive, we should probably look at the surrounding lithology and see if we could build a real dam. Nature is probably showing us what we have and how we can use it. It will solve some of our water problem.

To Preggers! Reading your blog it gives one the impression that you’re a very bright bulb, the Morning Star, the Star of Bethlehem, but in reality your blog it is full of nothing. As a progressive person one would expect that you would have given DNO readers something to chew on.

In your blog you said, “BUT I believe this could have been avoided. The powers responsible should have let the water out a very long time ago. It would be more controlled, and the damage minimal, BUT NO!!! Somebody was trying to make a million on it.” Will you tell DNO readers how you would achieve that, “It would be more controlled, and the damage minimal”

What you have failed to take into consideration is, no one was able to stand on the banks of that dam or lake, and it was about 100-200 feet deep containing billions of gallons of water, now say what you would have done to control it, and by the way who was likely to make millions from that billions of gallons of water.

As the Star of Bethlehem that you’re, have you taken into consideration that the “Powers that be” had to fetch the help of a helicopter to see whether the dam still posed a problem/threat to the residents, how on earth would you have, “It would be more controlled, and the damage minimal”

Guess what, if you had given the “Powers that be” the undertaking that you were able to control the water, I would have made a monetary contribution to you, by providing you with sufficient funds to buy a packet of drinking straws, a roll of tape and one five gallon bucket so that you would be able to siphon the water in an orderly manner, thereby minimizing the damage.

Preggers I take it to mean that you’re progression, don’t kill me, just making sense of your blog. Stop the blame game you’re progression.

This was a disaster waiting to happen from the very beginning, yet they still named it “Miracle Lake”. I would love for someone to explain what was so “miraculous” when that dam burst. The only miracle I see is the fact that God was looking over the people of Layou, and there were no fatalities.

      July 30, 2011

Only in Dominica all you seeing no further than all you nose where development is concerned. Do you know about infratructural development? The Holland tunnel is located where? Go do your research. We can do so much with the right engineeers, that dam was nothing to drain!!! I have seen oceans filled, lakes drained, rivers dregded, and you call me stupid? Dominicans are so narrow minded!!!

      • Roseau
        July 31, 2011

It could take Dominica’s yearly budget to do what Yankee is saying. The same brains you have is the same brains other Dominicans have. The only difference is that you only bring speech and can say anything, but they must find the money to do what needs to be done. When you can bring them the money, then you can tell them what to do. Until then consider your words carefully so that they dont make a fool of you.

This is so sad. Is the Miracle Lake man-made? No criticism or pun intended. If it is man-made it could happen that it would not last as soon as a disaster strikes.
I reside in a section of Toronto which is not too far from an area of Lake Ontario. Actually, it is a suburb. When I look out the windows I can see the Lake especially on a clear day. Right now, it is approximately 9.00 pm, still a bit bright (in summer) and I glanced through the window and can see the outline of the lake in the horizon.
I was informed that the area where I reside was part of the lake leading up to a wide area, miles, kilometers away is va.
There is a Catholic Church near where I reside. Thank God. I do not have far to go especially in winter to go to church. A few years ago I was also informed that the parish Priest wanted to expand and deepen the area where certain activities, prayer gatherings and meetings are held. We also have a coffee and eats Sunday when the parishioners get together to mingle after Holy Mass. The area was too small.
Well, it was found that he could not have the basement deepened or widened further, that when the contractors dug the area they found water below. He had to have an extra room constructed on the side of the church which is a nice area.
Since I heard this I got concerned and still am. I told someone that one day the lake will reclaim its area as a Tsunami. The area is vast and spreads wide. The water was pushed back. It was developed for different types of housing.
May God help us and protect us.
There are some people who moved into the area dating back to a few years who are not aware of that. I told a friend who moved into the area which is not to far from where I reside about it. This friend was surprised to hear that. They are even closer to the lake.
All the pictures of the Layou area is sad to view. This one, the Miracle Lake, now and then has made me sadder.
I am with all of you in prayers. Keep up the worship and prayers. God is good and He protects. He did protect the Layou people. Claim this as a miracle from God and give Him due thanks and praise.
    God bless all.

    • Roseau
      July 31, 2011

Yes, it is urprising to note that many of Dominica’s mountains are made of sand, and since Dominica has not yet settled as it is a young country, we can expect other mountains to go and temporary lakes to corm. We just need to be prepared. But then again who can prepare for natural disasters? The year does not open with a written agenda that it hands out to God’s chosen people. I have reasonable suspicions that Roseau and Goodwill are disaster areas waiting to be resettled by nature. Plus our volcanoes can call the shots at any time. We can close our eyese to these facts and blame Skerrit when it happens whether he is in or out of Government. Duh :-o

      July 29, 2011

Nonesense. This was just natural progression. There is a constant movement which man can’t control. Man can only control nature for so long. The rise and disappearance of islands in the sea are another naturally phenomenon. To suggest that someone was making money is just malicious. Are you a geologist? Everyone has suggestions as to what should have been done. Guess what? The deed is done. It’s unfortunate for the people who have to live through it,but to them I say tie your waist and keep on trodding. God bless.

      July 29, 2011

I agree. That’s just to show us what our priorities are. there exist the technology to properly asses things like that and make the necessary changes. what about the many engineers in D/ca who went to asses the dam when it was newly formed?? couldnt they have seek the assistance of more experienced personel from the developed countries who most likely have delt with things like that? hundreds of lives could have bn swept away in such a disaster. THE AUTHORITY NEEDS TO STOP TAKE THESE KIND OF CHANCES WITH PPLES’ LIVES.

    • soldier
      July 31, 2011

Preggers! You go it right. I actually spoke to officials from the Disaster Preparedness office and asked what were they doing about the lake. Basically, the lake was unstable and nothing was being done to release the water or warn citizens in the area or passerby. It was just ignored or monitored uselessly. What is it was in the afternoon or after 8am .. what if it was on a hot Sunday afternoon with people bathing or camping at the river???? Think people! This could have been very bad.

The same thing happened in Asia after a typhoon and there was a gradual release by authorities because they didn’t want a human disaster after.

Guys .. nothing isn’t impossible when it comes to engineering and money.

    • Roseau
      July 31, 2011

We just say what we feel like saying. Projects are not like that. There is no miracle cure. Nobody could get to the bedge of the lake to do any work and blowing up the temporary natural dam that was formed could bring down the rest of the sandy mountain on everybody in that area. Why dont people think before they write anymore?

    • Truth,Love,Peace
      August 1, 2011

      @ preggers

Think positive and be kind. Do not point a finger of accusation. It happened and it happened. Period!
All good things work together for those who love God. There are times He tests us, our faith, love for each other, resilience, strength and perseverance and we do not give it a thought.
After a disaster or any sort of problem, personal or other, we thank God that especially lives were not lost. People do get over disasters in time. We are being tested all the time. This is where good people/neighbors, helpful and generous ones come in to assist those who are in need of.
Instead of laughing, criticizing and accusing, be loving and consider those who have lost property. As well, the owner of the cow. This could be his livelihood lost.
As the song: “Let me be a little kinder and a little blinder…”
God helps them along especially those who recognize him, worship him and pray to him. God is good and He never fails.
Ever thought of praying to Him for your country and nationals including yourself and family members? If you do not do that, try it you will like it. If you do then you should be a positive person and state godly nice words and be encouraging which should be imbedded in your heart and mind.

        @ Wenner

Some of you make some statements which make me laugh but seriously could be silly responses as yours.
Truly D/can must have meant the Dam and not the lake, if I am not mistaken. Also, “God help us!” Not God help me. This includes Dominica and every resident Dominica; you too, if you reside in Dominica. This is a cry, a plea to God for his help to help everyone. You should be happy about that, that someone whom you do not know is pleading and praying also on your behalf. This is what genuine Christians do, asking God to help others. Think beyond.
