Businessman offers incentive to Dominican players in match against Panama

Proprietor of Robinson Enterprises, Ken Robinson has promised the Dominica’s Senior Team a $1,000 incentive to any player who scores a goal and a $5,000 donation to the team if they emerge victorious over Panama on Friday.

Robinson presented the proposal to the team and the DFA at a press conference where the squad was officially announced yesterday. He said that the prizes are meant to let the men see the task ahead as a job, not merely a game.

“We have to look at sports as a job, not as a game. We play games, we do the job. The job at hand is to win the upcoming match and I point to you the players who will represent Dominica on Friday and ask you, are you up to it? And if you are, here is what I propose: Robinson Enterprises has placed the chips on the table and are waiting with Dominicans worldwide to celebrate the win with you on Friday. We are willing to donate $5,000 to the winning Dominica team. Also we will give for every goal scored $,1000 to the scorer of the goal.”

Robinson has also contacted the proprietor of Ruben’s Bakery who has pledged to match his generous offer.

Robinson continued, “Rubens Bakery, who we’ve just contacted, has agreed to match what I have just proposed. I hope that these incentives will stimulate your feet to ensure that we leave the stadium in a very happy mood on Friday.”

President of the DFA Patrick John has himself pledged a donation of $1,000 in an attempt to spur the team on towards a win in the upcoming match.

John said, “Mr Robinson and Ruben’s Bakery have done something that few Dominicans would have dared to do. Many would have waited for you to win and then come in. These two enterprises have done something new in the history of our football. We get sponsors for leagues, but the national team, no one wants to put their money. I am not a rich man, but I have got an incentive to help and I will put $1000 down [myself]. Your strength lies in your commitment to make the people of Dominica proud.”

The Dominican Team will face Panama at the Windsor Park Stadium on Friday at 6PM in another of their World Cup Qualifiers. A post-match jam is expected to feature the Swinging Stars Band outside of the stadium.

I commend the two businessmen, for their innovative offer. BUT there are other things that must play a part in the team winning. We know they are not professional players, but they should play to the best of their ability. They need to be: A skilled team; with Love of the game; a team which practices often and trains in advance not 2-3 weeks before a big game; No alcohol or any other substances; Practice with other skilled teams, perhaps like GPE & Martinique who are closer. They do need a well trained and motivational coach who has a game strategy; players MUST be committed and disciplined.

What I saw in the last game was not all that. One of the better players was on the bench until almost at the end. Money is not all. I thought I would not go back, however I will be there to support….again.

I must commend the businessmen for taking the initiative to support our national team. It is high time the private sector found it’s role in sports on the national level. I think that while this support is well-intentioned, it does not generate the most value for the sport locally.

In general our players do not present themselves as players on an “international level”, so why should they be treated as such? I think that by offering pay-for-goal we are putting the cart before the horse. How many of those same players train for at least 4-6 hours a day? How many of those players abstain from consuming alcohol? How many of those players study the sport beyond watching their favorite European team on TV?

I agree with one of the other comments in that we need to provide better facilities and equipment for players to practice regularly. Also, I’m sure they would benefit from a few consultants specializing in technique, fitness sustainability, etc.

What happens to those players who aren’t in a position on the team to score a goal? How will they feel about the “incentive”? I believe that the $5,000 dedicated to the team IF they win is a better way to foster team play and team spirit.

Let’s take team work to another level.. We need someone else to offer $11000 for the one who passed the ball to the scorer! And another business place $1000 for every ball the goalkeeper prevents from entering the goal. How about someone to pay the best defender? This is not just sports .. this is island representation and it’s time we start putting our money out for the things that we want. We want a winning team- let’s pay them to win for us.

The $5000 to the teamw will be shared among the other players.

Very good motivation! Sports in school is all about training. Stop treating big man work/sports like primary and high school sport challenges. High time sports on a national as well as international level be treated as a business. Artists get paid for their hard work, why can’t sports men and women get paid for their extremely hard work also? Next Level! ‘Internationally it’s Trillion $ BUSINESS.’

Giving that generous contribution to the ones who score a goal and to the team if they win is not going to let them win the game. Why? Dominica team has not proven to dominican that they can win, they have not been sucessful wherever they play so what going to happen they are going to play in a selfish mood every one will be trying to get that $1000 and at the end of it all, there will be no goal.I want to complement mr. Robinson for his idea but I am not seeing that money leaving mr.Robinson tresury cause dominica is not going to win.Just recently Mr. Patrick John prophecy with confidence that the dominica team was going to win 2love against Nicaragua and at rhe end patrick john was proven to be a false prophet.I am not prophetcying, but dominica team havent given me any reason for me to say that all the money promise them will help.ON A SERIOUS NOTE; Why do those company are so willing to donate so much money to ensure that Dominica win the match when just recently we were face with a serious disaster we see what happen in canefield, massacre, mahaut, layou,st joseph campbell etc, etc, we heard of the people who lost everything why then mr. reuben didnt think of helping a family or a child than trying to match mr.Robinson offer.Just though of that.

Congratulations to you Mr.Robinson, Mr.John and Mr.Reuben. This shows your dedication and commitment to the elevation of football in Dominica and in the players themselves. You all have done your part, the rest is up to the players to prove themselves worthy of your contributions.

Now is time for the players to take the task at hand seriously and deliver. This type of incentives are very common especially in the European soccer leagues. Just this past Sunday, the mayors of Eindhoven and Almere City..popular football cities in Holland…each pledged 10,000 Euro to their respective teams as an incentive to encourage them to secure a spot in Dutch East Division soccer championship tournament.

So kudos to you gentlemen on you display of sportsmanship and I hope your actions will stimulate other businesses and individuals alike to support football in D/ca.

Who knows…we may all see a whole new level of performance from our players.

    Bon chance this Friday !!!!

Congratulations Mr. Robinson, this is a wonderful thing you are doing. That’s what happens in other countries. The business people plays a great part in the development of sports and other entertainments in their county. They also make donation to the needy. I hope other business personnel will take a Q from you.

Bwavo Robinson Enterprises!! Bwavo Ruben’s Bakery!! Good gesture Mr. P.J. but if I were you, I would refrain from giving financial incentives being an executive member of the DFA, given what transpired recently in FIFA. Good luck to the National Football Team.

this is a very bad idea….and bad presedence to set….the guys are not going to pass the ball they are going to try to score instead…everybody will be greedy with the ball….ifyou want to make an offer it should have been for every goal scored the team will get 1000 dollars not one man…you are dividing the team…

    • Anonymous
      October 7, 2011

you are so right. That is division. Players play in diffrent area. It is difficult for the player on the defence to scorce a goal. Not a good idea

Sports should never be considered a “job” as stated. I foresee confusion and lack of teamwork on the field, because each individual, each player will want to score that goal in order to earn that extra $1,000

Good luck to the guys…I’ve seen improvement over your last game, your endurance, fitness and determination is impressive. What needs to be done is patience in offense, string the passes, give the extra pass and opportunities will open for our natural scorers, Curlson, Baggio & Kelly, then as we lose the ball all players must immediately apply pressure on the ball..Go guys u can do it..make DA proud

i know some might think i’m being negative etc etc…. but offering of money no matter how good-hearted it may seem is not the way to go… if these wealthy men want to help… they can start by helping to pay for or bring in the qualified people to work with our atheletes… they can invest in the spotting facilities where they may get free ads for years to come… but offering the players money is only going to make the game an ‘I’ alone scene…

      October 6, 2011

Come on man stop this pussyfooting. Let us show support to our players by congratulating the businessman for such a noble gesture. There is time for politics and even if we have a terrible PM and government Dominica still belong to us – not the politicians.
I know Mouth of the South (MOS) love his politics but MOS we need to break from the politics and stand behind the sportsmen and women and if you want a little bit pof politics in there here is an angle – if we promote our spots men and women these young people may very well help restore our image to the outside world.
