ICT road show launched

The importance of Information and Communication Technologies, (ICT’s) was underscored on Monday when Dominica launched the second edition of the ICT road show at St. Gerard’s Hall in Roseau.

The week-long initiative by the Caribbean Telecommunications Union and the government of Dominica seeks to stimulate interest in the sector and to bring forth ICT as a key area in the island’s development.

Speaking for Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit at the launch of the event, Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Senator Alvin Bernard, appealed for the sector to be embraced “and treated with the utmost sense of urgency.”

“Therefore, I and my government envisage an ICT enabled development which includes greater efficiency, lower cost and access to larger and new markets,” he said.

The senator said the use of ICT should also lead to “higher national productivity, job creation, and competitiveness.”

The roadshow will include an exhibition, panel discussions, seminars for the general public, performances and the sharing of new technologies.

Minister for Telecommunications Ambrose George used the launch of the Dominica leg of the regional ICT road show to chronicle the progress made here over the years in advancing technology.

“From a monopoly to a liberalised market, from EC$ 10 for a one minute international call to special rates under 69 cents. From fixed line telephone only to mobile penetration of over 140 percent. From no internet in the 90’s to a proliferation of internet in all schools and communities,” George said Dominica has made tremendous progress.

The minister who also has responsibility for information is visualizing a “smart, green community.”

“Indeed Dominica has a tremendous opportunity to connect into the global information society and to significantly prosper from the social and economic benefits of a digital economy,” he added.

When we put people in places we must know their ability and do not take for granted what comes from their mouth, We could be very impressive at an interview and we become the chosen one but the person you sounds less knowledgeable is the one you can put things into action.

being that a so-called leader said… ‘no law no constitution can stop me’… it’s very disturbing that this ICT… would be implemented under his leadership… how much say would the gov’t have on this… well of course they’ll have alot…. the constant attacks on media houses the pm and his people have had… the shutting and hacking down of D.N.O during the 2009 election campaigns… it’s obvious.. the leadership can’t and shouldn’t be trusted with such in it’s arsenal of weapons… the transfer of information should be free for all.. but i’m afraid the elite among us will seek to KEEP US BLIND… so with this… mama Dominique in your best interest… i wish this initiative goes somewhere else… cmon st. lucia and b/dos… if it’s one thing to pull from D.A.. it’s that ICT… not our creole fest…. and you all must forget about cheaper internet… no way will it be cheaper… the companies will just find ‘bright’ ways to make it expensive folks… don’t be fooled… we don’t need that ICT in the hands of Skerro and his gang

it’s obvious that you don’t understand what ICT really is and what it entails.Instead of being quick to jump on every article and comment, use the same computer to investigate and expand your knowledge.
