The Redemptorists Communities and the Catholic Church of Diocese of Roseau mourn the death of Rev. Fr. Otto Stoeckel, C.Ss.R. (15 August, 1910 to 13 May, 2010). He was born in Buffalo N.Y.
When he was about four years old, his family moved to Toronto. Fr. Stoeckel had a great devotion to the Eucharist and the Blessed Mother. He once stated that is was in St Lambert that he made his first and only Redemptorist Mission during which, “the priest laid great emphasis on the importance of the devotion to the Eucharist and Mother Mary.”
Fr. Albert Stoeckel C.Ss.R made his first profession to the Redemptorists on September 02, 1932. He made his final profession on September 02, 1935.
He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood June 20, 1937. His first missionary visit to Dominica was in 1971. The following year he was called by his Provincial to preach Mission in Canada. He returned to Dominica 1974 and was stationed in following parishes: St Theresa – Salisbury, St Joseph, Cathedral of Our Lady of Fair Haven – Roseau, La Salette – Pte Michel, St. Patrick – Grandbay, and Our Lady of Lourdes – Soufriere.
From 1990 – He was stationed at the St Alphonsus House at the Holy Redeemer Retreat House in Eggleston, where he regularly assisted in the parish of our lady of Fatima and the home for the Aged.
Well into his mid-nineties when it became too difficult for him to travel by himself he occasionally said Holy Mass in the Chapel of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Geraudel – Eggleston community. And he regularly visited the Home for the Aged and the Grotto Home for the homeless to celebrate the Eucharist with them until approximately two years ago when he was no longer able to do so.
Since ordination, Fr. Stoeckel spent most of his ministry preaching missions and giving retreats. He can be described as an excellent and well received missionary who was always in great demand and was well known for preaching the traditional Redemptorist themes with traditional missionary enthusiasm.
After a brief illness he departed this life on May 13, 2010.
He was truly a man on fire for the Eucharist and Our Blessed Mother, Mary!

He was the best and I shall never forget him. His powerful sermons were most inspiring to me as a boy when he served in Salisbury many years ago.

I was extremely privileged to have known and assisted Fr. Stoeckel. What a man! What a priest! What a teacher! So much respect for the rosary, for the Eucharist, for Mary, for the church. I didn’t know he was still in Dominica, but about a week or so ago I was telling my wife and young daughter of Fr. Stoeckel and all he stood for. I was telling them how he would never allow the noise that I hear in church today, the babies crying, people walking, during the consecration. I was telling them he would pause to allow mothers to take their crying babies outside, and, if they didn’t, he’d ask them to because the consecration was of such importance.
We know where Fr.Stoeckel is right now and we know where he wants us all to be.
I knew Fr. Stoeckel in 1993 in Eggleston when I was standing as God mother for my nephew. He was the priest officiating the mass. He was indeed a good man of faith. He was strong in his preaching, and he never took his religious life for granted. He gave his all into it. He always had some good advice to everyone. Fr. Stoeckel, May Our Beloved Father watch over you and guide you through eternity. You will be missed by many, especially here in Dominica. Your memories will live on.
First priest I ever heard really teach/preach the word. Listening to him was so refreshing from the usual monotonic homilies that you would get in a Catholic mass at that time.
Fr. Stoeckel was a holy priest and it was a pleasure listening to him preach. R.I.P. Father. I feel priveldged to have known this man.
Amazing! just last night my mom and I were talking about him.I did not even realize that he was still alive or that he had recently died. We were talking about the great impact he had on ours lives. He was truly a very powerful force in the missionary business.
May his soul be tranported to eternal life!
Rest In Peace Father Stoeckel

We Love Your Father Stoeckel. You;re our HERO and MENTOR. Memories of you will always remain.
Rest In Peace.
Fr. Albert Stoeckel C.Ss.R was a great preacher and a very spiritual man. He gave hope to all who heard him. In one of my lowest hours I began thinking about him recently. On inquiring about him, I learned that his health was failing. I planned to visit him but procrastinated. Lord help me…
