NICE GUY: The Opposition is childish and the Government is clueless

A cow was allegedly sexually molested recently. Is this serious enough to prompt authorities to action?

Today I have to use my column to talk about crime in Dominica. Six murders in two weeks in Dominica is historic but disturbing.

No, we will never get close to Jamaica’s crime statistics because at least three to five people are killed in Jamaica every day. However, by no means should we rejoice with our “relatively low crime statistics” of 11 violent deaths so far this year.

I want to start out by saying the government of Dominica and the Opposition of Dominica are wasting the people’s time, playing petty politics long after the Dec. 18, 2009 polls.

Crime is on the increase and all you are hearing from the Opposition are “Bin Bobol”, “Fertiliser Bobol” and “Lilac Apartments”.

To my frustration, the Opposition – instead of debating the many issues affecting the people of Dominica such as unemployment, the high crime rate and lack of investment opportunities – walked out of Parliament because government has failed to address electoral reform, among other matters.

You see it is also about election, politics, and “Bobol”.

The Opposition does not seem to give a damn about its people. We agree that electoral reform is needed. We agree that the Speaker of the House is wrong to not accommodate the questions of the Opposition. In other countries, it is normal for Speakers of the House to get the government to answer questions forwarded by the Opposition because the Opposition speaks on behalf of the people, so failing to do that they are disrespecting the people. Government stop disrespecting the people and the Speaker must be held to task for how she handled the matter with the Opposition.

But no, in general, the government and the Opposition are playing with peoples’ heads. Election is over and it is still about elections.

Why hasn’t the national security minister or the Prime Minister addressed the crime situation? Are they waiting for the next election? In other countries with a similar crime rate, one murder would prompt an immediate reaction from government or the opposition.

In Jamaica, each time there are major killings, which is almost weekly, the national security minister makes an address or releases a public statement, condemning the killings while committing to roll out crime prevention measures. Yes, this may not phase the murderers but it will send a message to the people that government cares and feels their pain.

In Tortola, Montserrat and Anguilla, one murder will prompt an outcry or a message of condolence from government or opposition. In Dominica we have had six murders in two weeks, which is enough to prompt a national address, and we are yet to hear from any politician or priest. DNO does not need to call Bishop Malzaire to ask for a comment on crime. Bishop Malzaire need to take the initiative and get on the airwaves and tell people to calm the heck down. Oh, I guess Mavado and Vybez Kartel are not coming to sing about “dutty panty” and “gunshot in yu head”, so no need to say anything.

In Dominica every day it’s about Bin Bobol and what Skerrit said, and what Ron Green and Edison said. Dominicans are on the airwaves addressing the wrong things. They are obsessed with politics, Skerrit and the Opposition and some of you can’t pay your damn bills and buy food.

The people of Dominica are to be blamed. We are too obsessed with politics. Now we have a high crime rate and everyone is bawling. But where were you when the justice system was failing and letting criminals go? We used it for politics right? Did we protest or walk for peace or demonstrate? No we just like beff, to talk in the bar, and on the radio but when it is time to walk the talk, we are deaf, blind and dumb!

Yesterday, the magistrate gave three defendants – charged with possession of ammo – $12,000 bail each despite the pleas from the prosecution that at least two of the defendants breached their bail conditions.

The magistrate argued that she has to go by what the law states, and she suggests she is just as powerful as the laws that are enacted in Dominica. She is right – technically, but Madam, is there something called principle and commonsense?

What does this all mean? The laws of Dominica favour criminals.

The strongest laws in Dominica are laws governing taxes. Every day they on your back to pay taxes. Every year they enact and upgrade legislation dealing with taxes and business practices. But what about crime legislation? Sentencing legislation? Yea but they are killing us with duties, VAT, income tax; businesses can’t make money; not enough money in the country; business is almost dead… unemployment is high because businesses are not making enough money to hire. And don’t tell me squat about the fast food restaurants… can $600 to $800 pay for your pads, send your children to school, bus fare, food etc? We need better foreign investment. This will help boost the economy.

But nope, these are not the issues that the Opposition are arguing about. It’s about electoral reform and Bin Bobol because it is all about getting into office in the next elections. Crime increase is not a priority.

We have heard the prime minister say over and over that Dominica will not tolerate murders and legislation will be upgraded to send people straight to jail for gun offenses etc. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit is a hot air balloon when it comes to crime fighting and national security. Sir the criminals laugh at you and the justice system. Believe that. Do something or don’t say anything.

The people of Dominica are fed up of the government’s handling of crime, the inept justice system and the childish Opposition.

The whole system is a mess! And I do not give a rat’s behind if anyone do not like this… and I am talking about the powers that be.

See ya next week.

Correction #1: The Opposition Members have infact commented on the increase in Crime and have made minor reccomendations to begin the process of dealing with the issue. I guess some people hear what they want to hear. This Nice Guy will continue to hear about the corruption, because guess what..they are crimes as well and it is when these crimes commited by those at the top are not dealt with, the citizen will then feel like they can do what they want too and the law will be linient.

Correction #2 If this Nice Guy is agreeing that the speaker interfers with the work of the Opposition in Parliament and is also agreeing that action must be taken by the Government to deal with the way she acts, then why is he crying over their non-attendance at the same parliament where the speaker is seating in th very same chair, unmoved, untouched and un challenged?

    FROM NICE GUY
    1. The UWP “mentioned” or “spoke briefly” of the crime situation at the press conference. Commenting on crime and addressing it nationally is totally different. It is time the UWPites do things professional and stop acting like we’re in the 1980s. In several countries where I lived, the Opposition releases statements to the media concerning crime and violence or based on specific topics. Sometimes they hold a press conference specifically to address crime and put forward their ideas to resolve these issues. Has the Opposition done that? NO. Their main focus was on electoral reform. Marlon, it is time you start thinking with both sides of your brain. You are a very intelligent guy. None of the media houses are yet to receive a statement from the Opposition or government regarding crime. They make “mentions” and “comments”. Look at Peter R. Augustine? He released a statement on crime. The government released an official statement when the Ecuadorian President was attacked, but 11 people were killed at home and only “mentions” and “comments” are released.

    2. The UWP must realise that not everything will go there way. No Opposition has things there way 100%. No one expect them to stay dumb. However, are you telling me that every time the Speaker acts against their will they will walk out? What effect has that had on the election results and on the Speaker’s action? Nothing. It does not hurt them. Clearly based on the public feedback, people are tired of the Opposition walking out. I want to hear members of the Opposition, not only criticise and tell us what we already know, but tell the people what they would do if they were government. The way the Opposition is moving will guarantee that they lose the next elections. Mark my words.

Wow some powerful but true words. I remember the days when we would go light a bunfire by the beach late-night not having to fear anything, arguments were settled with exchange of words and later sorries were welcomed. Now arguments are settled with knives, guns, 2 by 4s. I remember the days we went to sleep and only to realize the next day oh gush the door stayed open all night but yet nothing bad happened! My mum would leave the house unlocked and the neighbor would check on the kids and the pot on the fire. Where has our dignity gone? Are we becoming too Americanized? Are people obssessed with whats going on, on American TV or have we just lost all moral values. I remember when kids would pass and say good morning mam, good morning sir. Now they look you in the face and for no reason yell out all sort of profanities. Dominica was one of the islands that if you heard something bad happened everyone was shocked. Now we are talking cold-blooded murders, and the people who have or provide the guns go right back on the streets and the cycle recurs. We need to take some serious action to bring our island back to where it was. Thanks Mr. Nice Guys and we look to more forums of that kind where we voice our opinions on the current crime and unemployment situation in our island.Much appreciated.

It is about time DNO as a media house, and the other media houses in Dominica bring forth topics like these… not the beff crap and non-progressive discussion forums all the time..
I think DNO should make it a priority to let the leaders (government and opposition) know what their real priorities should be. With most other countries staging themselves to move forward, Dominica’s society is stuck on politics and all kind of bobol each party did, and things that do not and will not carry weight in the future- (for example the Big Oreo cookie and bugging issue between UWP and Mamo, The Blue chairs bobol with UWP and now Bin Borbol with Labour).
In my perspective issues the most pressing issues facing Dominica at this time is the deplorable state of the health care system, the weak and “loophole rich” judicial system and the lack of employment (not even career) opportunities. And I think that is what the government and the opposition should be focused on.
So what if the ID cards and does electoral reform happens? So what if the answers to all the kinds of borbol are made known? how is that going to affect the healthcare system? How is that going to change the judiciary system ? How is that going to change the jobs the people can find or the careers they want to pursue? These are the questions that need to be posed! And it is soo upsetting that the talk shows like the Heng,Talking Point and all the other media houses do not focus on that. Do some BIG thinking my fellow Dominicans, then BIG changes can occur, not those petty small island mentality and society that remains the rut!

However in DA,we are so quick to cry down each other for politics. We should learn that everyone is entitled to their opinions and political affiliations and not expect everyone to vote for the same person. What kind of democracy will this be anyway?

I have read your article and I must state it is written with great profesionalism. Out of the many paragraphs from your article my eye has caught this one, and I am quoting you as follows:

I came to the VI 10yrs ago, it was an election yr, I had been there for 1week and didn’t know election was going on, I just kept seeing people by the road side with their posters, T-shirts and what not, never paid it no mind, until 1 day I asked my aunt, “what are they rallying for anyway?” She said, “its election, they backing their people.” I was shocked. Coming from D/a I have never seen people who support the other person standing together side by side or just a few feet from each other campaigning peacefully like this. NO MAPWE, NO FIGHTING, NO FRIENDS MAKING ENEMIES OF EACH OTHER. I was in total disbelief. I’m not saying there is no corruption in their political system but the way they showed their support was commendable.

We dominicans need to stop fighting each other over politics. Everybody dont believe in God (I do believe) so I highly doubt that you’ll get everybody in a country to support the same party, but everybody can @least respect each others freedom of choice to support whoever they please. We all need to go to the rallies and actually listen to what our leaders are proposing or promising, not just for the sewo, and decide if that is what we want and vote wisely. Many times its false promises and deceit, at the time some may even be sincere until they get in and their intentions gets tainted, but that we wont know until they are in. So when they get in office, there’s nothing we can do until another 5yrs, so instead of fighting like tee coshon with each other we need to come together as 1 nation and do what is right.

Your neighbor is not your enemy just because they didnt vote the same party as you, they are fellow dominicans just like u, and if the Government messing up, they going to feel the same damn heat (although they may not admit it).

So if we dont have jobs we have idle hands and idle minds, then people we’ll find other means to butter their bread (CRIME). These are issues that needs to be addressed, without structure in our youth there’s no structure in our Island’s future.

I luv your article Mr Nice Guy more so because it is honest, truthful and unbiased. There are orther aspects/issues that needs to be addressed, the government, opposition and the nation have to come together as 1 only then will we see change, but as long as everybody looking to point the finger @ the other we will never progress. The party in power by itself cannot make change especially when it come to our youths. We are all responsible.

@DOMINICAN IN THE VI, I totally agree with you. You address the nation through the media/press conference, c’est pas tout mon ki ka aller le’glise.

Thanks for being candid and fearless. There are a lot of people like you who feel and would like to say what you just wrote about, but the fundamental reason for inept government running Dominica and a lot of other countries is due to lack of job security. We have all created the unaccountable monster that terrorize us if we disagree with any policy our decision they make. I have three kids that I love dearly and part of their training involves challenging their dad without any fear or favor because it stimulates better relations. I am a secure dad and anyone who is offended or afraid to be challenged either has something to hide or are insecure. My hope for Dominicans on the ground right now is to get involved in effecting change by drafting pleages right now for their respective parties to adhere to otherwise they will be voted out next election. We need to move pass thinking about ourselves and see the big picture aka Dominicans irrespective of party most benefit from government and not the other way around. I am tired of hearing people complain when they are in the majority and can simple move pass the divide created by simple minded politicians with one agenda in mind, “Divide and conquer”. We all love Dominica and while pride will stand in our way when we fail to stand for something and fall for anything divisive. Let us take our country back by making the change if not for ourselves, but for our children and grandchildren.

To nice guy – I am not a party pooper however I’d like to express that as monotonous as it may seem the BIN BOBOL issue should not be discarded until the government come clean or at least show us that the money is back in the treasury. I think that the request for financial or fiscal responsibility is also part of the opposition’s responsibility. On the VILLAS ; 2 MILLION DOLLAR HOUSE issue that is election politics. These election issues we should put in the kitchen cupboard and use these issues to decide where we vote come election.
The opposition’s behavior toward electoral reform may be asinine and childish however as responsible citizens why not demand electoral reform. Do we want to continue the trend of election

    FROM NICE GUY
No one is undermining the importance of the Bin Bobol and electoral reform issues but it seems like the Opposition are a stuck tape… they cannot debate other issues, especially current ones…. I am for the fight for more transparency, but an effective Opposition is hardworking and versatile.

Well said nice guy, very well articulated and put together. Facts well on point. I hope the people concerned read this article and put action to work….. We need immediate attention in Dominica to address the crime rate increase. Stop the politicking and get down to do something constructive for the people who voted for you guys, be it opposition or government.

  57. WAKE UP
    October 1, 2010

Human tendency – We promote the things we allow. The rising criminal activities in Dominica is simply because we promote crime. I blame the leaders of this country; the political leaders , Religious leaders and even our social leaders those who are suppose to lead by example; the educated ones.

The politicians are the greatest proponents of crime. They blatantly lie cheat and deceive to hold on to or gain power. After all if it is OK for the leaders to do so then why Tom and Jerry. Where there is corruption in high places there will be crime and poverty. Only a few will prosper.

So many of us are here praising the content and context of this article but how many of us make the right decision at the voting booth. How many of us go to the political rally for the siwo and never pay attention to the issues. When the election is over how many of us really evaluate and hold politicians responsible and accountable. We cannot just throw the flames at the politicians for we Promote What We Allow. I f we would be more intelligent then the politicians would take heed. When one politician can publically state that “ I know I have not done a good job representing you but I know you will do the right thing and vote for me” that is an insult to basic intelligence and an attack on morality. Note I deliberately did not state the Political Party. The point is that we as a people need to be responsible.

I do agree that the opposition UWP has been nothing but ridiculous and I’m glad that we can all see right through their MO. It is all about POWER or LOP syndrome. What do we have then. A lame opposition and a government too arrogant to listen and to corrupt and unworthy of chastising criminality. The old adage- POT CALLING KETTLE BLACK”.

Where there is poverty there will be crime –period. Where there is corruption in high places chaos will reign down in low places. The history of our politics reveal that the opposition is powerless and does not affect or effect the general status quo. Unfortunately our political system does not provide for a balance of power. Though lame , parochial and petty the present opposition really have no effect on the day to day government decisions.

Let us assume that we had an opposition who was out there talking about the issues that really matter- crime , poverty, jobs, education and the lack of vision on the part of this current administration how many of us Dominicans would jump on the wagon and demand immediate action from the government? One of the things that saddens me is the fact that I’ve witnessed people who are intelligent ,educated and religious yet blinded by blue ,red and green color politics. It is unfortunate that we are still 200 years behind in this realm of our political and social existence.

I hope that the day will come when at least 50% of our people will intelligently select our leaders those in opposition and in government.

You doh see people like … can get self bail so that someone can report him for rape again.. the judiciary is the protective body of the criminal world.. just tell me an innocent man you know that can western union 10,000.00 dollars to a magistrate account in one day..

    Next Level!

Somtime ago Dr. Francis Severin of UWI open campus D/ca indicated that the level of crime in the country is a matter of concern that the authorities needs to address. Rather, he was severely criticised for comparing Dominica to a community in Jamaica. Even the minister responded to his statements, now let them look at the statistics and form their evaluation. I wonder what they have to say now. Dominicans must stop attacking the messengers and address the issues that are brought forward. I hope and pray that what we are experiencing is not a sign of things to come but just a passing phase. See the criminals hear and know of other crimes that appear to go unpunished or even investigated.

  73. I support you...

Yes while the Artilce make sence, but please dont blame the opposition they trying thier best to bring all this under control in Dominica but how about when they go into parliament nothing they present to the speaker she has a problem with it, also they cannot talk or ask any question how they want, my friend what do you want them to do, to the one who talks about the service on sunday at P/Bpuche my question to you is only one time we need to talk about crime and what is taking place Dominica you know what these dumb a…….s is all about themselves and when they somewhere they like to make a show so people like you can spread it around for them so stop it, Now if the opposition dont take stand as they doing now you want things be worst for my grandchildren well am happy with whatever the opposition is doing because is just a matter of time for you all to reap the fruits and if you want to speak the truth you never heard anything like that going in our country until this handsome pretty prime minister come into power so to get reid of all that he need to go also is clungs them because is all the money they taking to get rich over night that has the country like that , for they dont care about nobody or nothing that is taking place at home all they care about is thier pocket

  75. OOOOOk

@Trevor Johnson: I will not say Dominicans are stupid because if i do i will be referin to myself too and i am not…. but yout comment has just registered you as one of the foolish Dominicans…. this has been one of the best articles straight up. you are the one who clearly have no understanding of how the parliament works…. the opposition has a duty to address these situations… bring it up in the parliamentry meetings as arguments because the are issues that needs to be answered to by the government….if they dont bring it up for debate and make it know or aparent to the Government as one of their flaws then MAYBE these issues would never be looked at or delt with….

Although this is a good article, I must state that:
The Government did address the crime rate in Dominica, and have appointed officers of the law to deal with it, why it always have to be the Government to PAMPER A NATION OF BABIES WHO CANT SEEM TO TRAIN UP THEIR CHILDREN IN THE WAY THEY SHOULD GO.

Unemployment is on the rise everywhere, it is soo much that people are returning home to Dominica. It seems that we are too lazy that we cant even go and clear our family lands to plant produce to make money. We all want to sit in Air Conditioned offices and drink coffee. Work is there do it, we have soo many resources in Dominica that we still sit and wait on the Government to tell us to go and plant.

In the USA, there are 42 million people below the poverty line, dog better than them, but in Dominica, we know how to survive but we are too laaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzy.

YOU GUYS ARE UNFAIR TO THE GOVERNMENT.

Perhaps DNO should send a co[y of this express to all the ministers…. and FBK leader of the Opposition.

As a Dominican who has lived abroad for a very very very long time and has expressed interest in opening a small business on the island and have been turned away each time, this article reinforces my concern. Each time I speak with an official this is argument, we need more jobs on the island we need to keep our young people and others busy so they do not become idle. But no, I will not sleep with the PM and his good squad so I am not fit to run a business in the country.

  96. I wish there was a love button.
    October 1, 2010

Mr. Nice guy I love this article. I couldn’t have said it better myself. I have been preaching that for years. Dominica is all about politics and a young prime minister (strupes) it’s time we Dominicans put our thinking caps on. We talk about the educated people but they may have the knowledge but lack common sense. Dominican (sigh) is the most sickening island when it comes to politics. when will we wake up and smell the coffee. It’s time to put the who I like I’m putting into govt mentality aside and put people into office who can do the job. Those in power now are just opportunists grabbing what they can get.
The crime rate is appalling and something needs to be done immediately. I mourn for my country, it’s so sad how so called educated people act so foolishly. maybe if the Govt did something about foreign investment and the business sector on a whole there would be more people employed and less young people peddling drugs. I mean come on man. It’s always about who you know and who know you in Dominica and only a select few can get scholarships and jobs. Just ask and you will see. If your surname is one of the big ones, you get a job in ministry even if your head more empty than a calabash, Now you see why the country cannot go forward. We in Dominica need to put our ignorant, caveman ideals aside and do what is best for this country. Don’t you see how all the people who are educated, skilled and able to work are leaving and going to other countries? why do you think that is?
Sadly government in Dominica has nothing to do with the people but everything to do with how much can I gain from this country. it is just an easy opportunity to acquire wealth and to become popular.
good luck Dominica, if you don’t change you will continue to be screwed
