The Chronicle has been desecrated

CommentaryI am among thousands of Dominican patriots who lament the desecration of the Chronicle after its sale to the Roosevelt Skerrit regime. I am also a former editor who was instrumental in transforming what was a sleepy establishment paper with close to a 100 year history into a formidable agent of change

Along the way I renamed the venerable publication the “Conscience of the Nation” to emphasize its role in being the moral arbiter and the voice of reason and moderation in a nation that was transitioning into the independence era.

So I am especially horrified to see that a publication with a storied past and an enormous reservoir of goodwill created over a long period of responsible journalism fall prey to a culture of corruption that Mr. Skerrit introduced into the country since he assumed the mantle of leadership.

I spent six years at the New Chronicle, as it was named during my tenure as editor in the mid to late 1970’s. It was a period of immense social and political turmoil.
I saw the press as an instrument of change and importantly, as a medium to hold the feet of the political establishment to the fire.

Unfortunately the management of the Chronicle and its sister enterprise, Tropical Printers, fell victim to poor and incompetent management in the wake of my departure in 1979. The directors of the companies reached an agreement to stem the losses by selling the Tropical Printers arm to a private businessman; it went out of business shortly thereafter. The Chronicle arm which had long ceased to be a viable commercial enterprise was sold at concessionary price to Franklin Baron.

Keep in mind the fact that at the time of sale, the New Chronicle had no physical assets. Its only asset was what accountants refer to as “goodwill”, an intangible asset accumulated over close to a hundred years. It is therefore conclusive that Mr. Baron became a place holder for a national institution that predated him by several generations. Implicit in the terms of sale was the understanding that Mr. Baron, despite being a rightful owner, was a sort of custodian who would preserve and protect the goodwill the publication had accumulated over the years and that the integrity and mission of the paper would not be compromised.

This is the backdrop to the sale of one of the most revered institutions in the nation’s history. And this is why I am horrified to see a publication that was once revered for its principled positions, has become a propaganda rag for a corrupt regime.

How did this come to pass?

About a year ago I was informed by Clayton Shillingford, a past president of the Dominica Association Of Arts and Sciences,(DAAS), that agents of Roosevelt Skerrit had been circling the Chronicle and had made an offer to purchase the publication in the sum of $500,000. This to me represented an earth shattering development.

Roosevelt Skerrit interested in buying the Chronicle? How can this be? Is nothing sacred anymore? Would Baron really do this? What would be his motivation? Was this purely a commercial transaction or was the proprietor of the Chronicle signaling that he no longer cared about the sacred trust that was placed in him to ensure the proud tradition of the Chronicle endured? Was he bluffing or was he just giving in to the climate of corruption that he condemned in his editorials? I remained skeptical.

The DAAS president later included a caveat: Baron would only sell to Skerrit if no other bidders showed up. Shillingford also mentioned that Mr. Baron specifically inquired about my personal interest considering that I was a former editor. I demurred for reasons I will explain.

I did not believe and I still do not believe that a stand alone newspaper with no physical assets and lacking commercial viability should command a price of half a million dollars even if you factored in goodwill.

My professional training and experience lead me to believe that none of the various traditional or conventional methods used in asset valuations: public market valuation, sum of the parts valuation, or discounted cash flows would support Mr. Baron’s asking of $500,000. While it is true that the Chronicle possessed an enormous amount of goodwill, it is a stretch to make the argument that the Chronicle goodwill was worth $500,000, except to an individual or entity with hot money that they are seeking to launder and would not hesitate to pay an obscene amount to get his hands on an asset that would help him further his activities.

This is a conclusion that I have arrived at in the abstract and does not does not offer an opinion as to Mr. Skerrit’s source of funds but merely draws attention to the modus operandi of those who indulge in lavish and conspicuous purchases especially when they overpay.

Various alternatives were explored to counter Mr. Skerrit’s vulgar offer of $500,000 including one that would place the Chronicle into a national trust owned by the public and to which interested private sector interests would subscribe. These efforts fell short as Mr. Skerrit’s agents kept up the pressure. Mr. Baron succumbed to the pressure and sold the people’s paper, the Conscience Of The Nation, for the princely sum of $600,000.

And this is the price that Mr. Skerrit paid for the privilege of desecrating the Chronicle, a veritable national institution that has been permanent part of the media landscape for over a century.

Interestingly, one does not have to be a labourite or a UWP supporter to acknowledge that the Chronicle is no longer what it used to be. It is now a shameless organ of propaganda whose sole mission is to attempt to give credibility to a discredited regime.

It is my view that Mr. Baron has committed an act of gross disservice to the people of Dominica by facilitating the desecration of a national institution for 600 pieces of silver.

It is my hope that he spends the remaining years of his long life contemplating his act of betrayal to the people of Dominica. He might even find pleasure in periodically counting his 600 pieces of silver, if this will give him any comfort.

It’s a cycle sir. The paper is doing the reverse of what it did when you wanted to get freedom into office. Isn’t it funny how life change? I lament the fact that skerritt has got his hands on the chronicle but tell me sir, did the owners of the paper really expect anything different when they sold it to the current owners? Were they that broke that threy needed to sell? I remember nabes an I in the seventies and its resurgence in the 1995 – 2000 period, I’m sure you do too, so go figure.

This is not about the desecration of The Chronicle. This is about partisan politics, animosity, and a mischievous perception. The Chronicle has been sold since last year, this is according to a published article on DNO Thursday, December 5th, 2013. The new owner was named as Michael (Mike) Jones, not Roosevelt Skerrit. In politics everything is timing, why now such a commentary is being written by Mr.Sampson. How can Mr. Sampson be trusted when he stated the Chronicle was bought for $600,000. Why is Mr.Sampson making assumptions quote “except to an individual or entity with hot money that they are seeking to launder and would not hesitate to pay an obscene amount to get his hands on an asset that would help him further his activities. ” For someone as Mr. Sampson who prides himself as a former news paper editor making such statement is very irresponsible, and reckless.

Saying quote “Mr. Baron has committed an act of gross disservice to the people of Dominica by facilitating the desecration of a national institution for 600 pieces of silver,” wow. Why such a nonsensical statement, where Mr. Sampson got such authority to make such statement on behalf of the people of Dominica, it’s just his opinion satisfying his political beliefs. If Mr.Sampson considers himself a patriot and wants to fight corruption and restore a Government of Good Governance he needs to be in his Country, writing commentaries is not going to help his course. I have always said Politics can do strange things to the mind of people. It can be a thief and an enemy of reason and intelligence, regardless of a person stature and education.

Please, don’t be naive Gary. The close association between Mike Jones and Roosevelt Skerrit is well known and we should not be surprised at all if Mike Jones is fronting for him, if not directly through a brass plate company. Mr Baron was free to sell th newspaper to anyone, who met his price but to pretend that this was not a strategic move on Skerrit’s DLP part is testing our credulity too far.

Why is it your perception should be accepted as proof nothing, you said in your comment is based on hard evidence. It was the same thing said with “bubbles” when they said that the villas was owned by the PM. Have you not asked your self why this type of culture pervades in our country where perception is established as truth. You have not address the messenger of the comment Mr. Sampson who has a political agenda and animosity towards towards The PM, why are you looking at this with tunnel vision, based on your comment you have said nothing to prove The PM owns The Chronicle, I respect your opinion, that’s all it is frivolous opinion.

    • November 28, 2014

Mr. Sampson, do not need to reside in
Dominica to comment on all the corruption
      that is happening.
Why don’t you address the diaspora
contingency who will be arriving from NY
on December 5 and returning December 9
to vote and facilitate a ‘tyrant ‘
      into power.
Those from Boston, who are claiming
false disability, workman compensation and public
assistance, I assist in ” cooking you all
      goose”.
You all know what I am capable of doing, and I am not afraid.
Let the people who reside in Dominica
who have limited option —migration etc
      decide their fate.

Why are you equating alleged corruption fueled by a political agenda for actual corruption. Mr. Sampson could write about corruption from any where he pleases, what is at stake is the truth, is there actual truth in what Mr.Sampson writes about. If you are naive and do not understand politics that is your problem. As to the word tyrant used to describe The PM, please look up the word tyrant and see if it fits any of the characteristic of The PM.

As to the your claim about diaspora contingency who will be arriving from NY
on December 5 and returning December 9.. Why should I take your word for it, after reading your political language describing the PM, telling me people are breaking the Law does not say you right, When Laws are broken there are institutions set up to deal with that. I do not know who your, and what you political motives.

      November 28, 2014

What Sampson should also have said is that with this purchase, Mr. Skerrit has cemented his reputation as one of the most prolific pathological finaglers in the history of this country, perhaps going back to its discovery by Columbus. Now he has managed to finagle his way into buying the Chronicle and he wants the public to believe that the owner is Mike Jones, akin to his efforts to make us believe that his villas are owned by Renneth Alexis.
So this is the modus operandi of Mr. Skerrit: He carefully selects surrogates and hides behind them to accomplish his nefarious objectives.

        November 28, 2014

Before you go on with your nonsensical assumption where is your evidence to prove that The PM is the owner of The Chronicle. It is useless arguing with you when you cannot provide hard evidence to support your assumption based on your political partisan beliefs. I’m not like you throwing my intelligence to the wind I’m willing to change my view if you can give me proof of what you believe, on till then it’s a frivolous assumption driving by political motives.

I think its time that we the people of Dominica look for their Salvation and Clear the hearts of malice and bad intent. We need to speak the truth at all times. Ensure that our hearts and conscious is clear of malice and untruth. God is looking at us and we must be prepared to answer on judgement day of What we have done on earth.

The Chronicle for years kept us abreast of News during the time of PM Eugenia. Then when the Editor etc was changed and they became Anti Government it was slander and untruth about the Government. Every week it was breaking news upon breaking news. A particular writer for the paper showed his political bias through thick and thin, we still bought the paper.

So what is the problem now, that someone else acquired it you all are finding a problem in it. If it was someone else who had purchased it – and your untruth messages continued to be circulated you all would be happy. There is a saying “What comes around goes around”

So people stop it – One set alone must be blasted insulted etc an another set just take take take – so enjoy the journey – LET THE CHRONICLE PRINT.

you realise this is 2014 right?.. and newspapers are losing relevance by the day. Take a straw poll,, How many people gt their news from newspapers? from the internet? from radio or tv? Even opinion pieces now appear more in blogs and social media than in print. The death knell of the Chronicle was sounded long before Baron sold it (very astute move) and to claim that Skerrit has the smoking gun is self servingly delusional. It is my observation, that anytime they buy something, or give away something, it is always from five ($500,000.00) dollars and over: Five hundred thousand, given to the boy bishop, five hundred thousand given to the man with the Radio Station, which he took to open a new Radio Station in St. Lucia.

Now we are learning about another five hundred thousand, paid for the purchase of the assets of the newspaper. Should we wonder why they are stock at five hundred thousand, may that is maximum amount they know how to count, you know like from one (1-500, 000), to five hundred thousand.

You know I hear people who major in English, usually do not know how to count: I also heard through the grape vine that Laboratory Technicians who went from being; a Lab Technician, and demoted himself to the level of a watchman, knows how to get plenty of money in the millions, however, he can only count from one to five hundred thousand too.

I hear when he count from one to five hundred thousand, all say is millions.

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Here is a line for a Calypso:

They know how to get de money, but dem doh know how to count it: That is going to be hit song oui!

As sentimental as you may get, but private business is really not national business. He has every right to dispose it as he may, if only for monetary gain whether for himself or others. Many people may lament the sale, but it still goes down to a private citizen’s democratic and constitutional right as long as its not foul of the law. This does not mean you or I may be happy about the new face of the paper. But its a democratic and capitalistic world out there, and whether you agree with the intent, it seems to be serving the buyer’s interest as well. So Julius you did your work conscientiously and with great effect but its time to move on. Its a dog eat dog world at the intersection of capitalism and politics. May the fittest survive.

I asked myself what is wrong with Mr. Baron who had disclosed many cases of discreditable conduct by this government in the past…. My country is crying…. I call on my brother officers to stand up and defend ma Dominic

Oh so true. I have supported this ruling party but the Chronicle of late have lacked substance and I have stopped buying.

I hear enough political slander at rallies and want to read actual news

chacha True labourites do not show their colours and get vex and leave their party. False/Pretending to be/Untrue labourites leave because they did not get what they want. Put in your pipe and smoke it. You know what I talking about.

If you support blindly then that is you, but there is more to my life and vote than simply bashing people. I look for substance also. At this point, it’s just the lesser or both evils. I cannot have Lennox as my PM
