COMMENTARY: Fire Them!

People of conscience, wisdom and knowledge should always seek to guide the people, especially the youth, against loose and misguided accretions. I do not claim to know much, but I have an independent consciousness which tells me that it is terribly concerning when a Prime Minister of a democratic island state, Mr. Roosevelt Skerrit, declares that it is foolish for there to be opposition – irrespective of the context, facts or reasons.

I cannot, in good conscience, just allow this to ride the waves of ignorance. I am a native Dominican with a voice, just as the PM, so I am using that voice in response to his. I ask for a free, fair, frank and respectable debate on this and other issues – just as they do in Barbados, Grenada and elsewhere. This is my right – and everyone else’s – so please bear with me as I make this case. Here is what Prime Minister Skerrit actually said: “this foolishness, and Grenada and Barbados have taught us so, that it is foolishness to talk about you need an opposition; we don’t need no opposition in Dominica! It is…it is a waste of money to give opposition man money and he does nothing for us. Useless lazy people! Because, let me tell you, if you are a boss-man and you are the boss-man in Dominica with your vote, so you are our employers; if a man is not working for you, fire him!” The PM went on to castigate the opposition, asking that the people of Dominica send them a similar message as was sent in Barbados and Grenada. He asked that the people “fire them.” This is very worrisome and I do not wish to be judged harshly by the future generations as having done nothing when I could indeed have at least spoken, especially as I had/have the prerequisite professional competencies to so do. So I speak.

Here is what I think. The PM needs to be more accepting of his political opponents if he wishes to continue as a major player in this democratic jurisdiction. The PM has to understand that he too can and will serve in political opposition (if he remains on the scene). It is not at all a bad thing, Mr. Skerrit; this is the norm in democracies. I could go on to analyze his statements, but for fear of being accused as driving any partisan agenda, let me stick to this basic argument that there must be opponents/opposition/differing views in life, especially in governance of a nation state, and the one who cannot tolerate this may need to do some serious introspection.

The people shall be the final judge, but I am very troubled about the recent statements by Roosevelt Skerrit, the Honorable Prime Minister of my Native land, Dominica.

I personally think Alex has taken Skerrit’s statement out of context. Although Skerrit may have miss articulated some of his words in his statement, he made a valid point. To be specific Skerrit is referring to one individual. The leader of the opposition. Lennox is a lazy opposition leader. Lennox has not done one bit of community service in country. Lennox is under the assumption he is entitled to be PM by using evasive tactics and short cuts to be commander in chief. After hurricane Maria Lennox refuse to roll up his sleeve to meet people. So an opposition leader should be visually active in every constituency giving people the assurance that his is up to the task if given the opportunity. And that not Lennox. Let’s put it straight forward. Lennox will never be PM.

To all those bright supporters of PM Skerrit, I would say continue to ignore all the signs of underdevelopment in the country, continue to bend backways to explain the obvious reckless nonsense he spews like an ignorant infant and wait for his turn in opposition. If he remains in Dominica, your support would not have been in vain but if he goes (very likely), it will be the final crushing blow to your inflated false sense of integrity invested in a Con such as Roosevelt Skerrit.
I dare say that the majority of Dominicans who support the DLP have benefitted personally from a handout, which they don’t realize that it is only a strategy to keep them coming back. They would have done much better on their own and kept their pride if they were granted an enabling environment. Wait till Skerrit Loses an election and see if he will remain to suck the salt with all you!!..

Is there by a proverb that says “Action speaks louder than words?” If so, based on Skerrit’s actions it is clear that he wants the opposition fired, but his actions also suggestions that he also wants wants the police fired and the laws and Constitution of Dominica fired as well. As we have already seen the man wants to have his own chosen opposition that is lead by Judas Iscariot, his own police that is led by his boy Carbon and his own Constitution that is led by Charles Savarin. So I don’t take offense with what he said because what he’s done told me long ago to prepare for the dictatorial reign. But by the way his wife and children are enjoying the democracy of the US that he too expects to enjoy with them when his distruction of Dominica is complete

Alex while I think Opposition is important for any thriving democracy to survive but what we have in Dominica is a total waste of time and money. This is the weakest opposition we have ever seen in Dominica. Here is my reasons for saying so:
    1.The UWP Opposition is the only Opposition in recent history that moved a Vote of no confidence in the government. They were granted the motion and they failed to debate it;
    2. The UWP organized a successful protests in Roseau. The Police arrested and charged some of its Parliamentary colleagues and they completely went to cower in oblivion. Afraid to sacrifice for change;
    3. The Opposition expelled its deputy leader only less than a year ago and voted him again after making a big show after his mishaps;
    4. The Opposition has a leader who has so many court cases because of not using his discretion in most cases then come back to the very poor supporters to pay for his legal indiscretion. Clearly taking money his party could use to make its…

“Workers who is fed up”, you are a fool. Hear dat: Rosie Douglas was jailed, yet Dominicans voted him into the office of Prime Minister. Rosie Douglas played a leadership role in the violent Bus Drivers’ Strike, which saw the blocking of public roads and setting of fires in Roseau and elsewhere, yet he was voted into office of PM in Dominica. Ambrose George was fired by 2 PMs, yet he was taken back by a third PM. My point is that if UWP does not qualify as an opposition party, did DLP under Rosie and Pierro and Skerrit qualify?

For a man who claims to be a graduate student pursuing a PhD in Political Science, a Student of Political Science, a Political Scientist, and now a Political Philosopher, Instructor of Government and Politics, and pollster, Mr. Bruno surely does a good job at displaying an abject deficiency in commonsense and understanding of basic English. Maybe he is simply malicious?!

Not unlike others who oppose and/or hate “Skerrit,” he has conveniently extricated, out of its context, ONE portion of what the PM said to submit this heap of you-know-what as the inspired musings of a “Political Philosopher!”

    So pitiful.

  15. June 10, 2018

Excellent observation Mr Bruno. I am disappointed and at the same time bewildered by some of the statements made by Mr Skerrit but is even more disappointed in my people who simply accept and in some cases condone it. How is it that a people is willing to self impose a dictator by continuously voting this individual and his regime into power when countries where dictators rule people are dying every day trying to rid themselves of such rulers. It is clear that we are still shackled by the mental chains of slavery. It is indeed true that we are the youngest nation in the region but in this day of modern technology there is no excuse for our peculiar behaviour. Blessed guidance

  16. UDOHREADYET
    June 10, 2018

That sounds about right… I think people are trying their best to take the statement out of context.
Its clear what the PM is saying that the opposition leadership isn’t doing anything, their supporters are funneling alot of money in that party but they leadership isn’t working for the people, they are working for themselves. its not an issue of political party as much as it is about the leadership being useless, they are just criticizing and opposing and negative but aren’t actually doing things for their constituents.

Its not a question of democracy because we are a democracy, its a question of when will UWP upgrade their leadership, when will the supporters realize the country is too small to be that polarized… that type of negative politics eats away at progress.

And also the Fertilizer Bobol, that was planned by a person in the USA with the help from a sitting labour Minister, albeit we hear its his brother. Would yo know who that is, please alert us of the person. If you ignore this request then you are culpable and promoting corruption and thievery of states funds. Come clean. 17. June 10, 2018

Prime minister or not the man has a right to have an opinion and this opinion is consistent with local politics. Let us look at the situation, there are 21 constituencies and when the major parties contest all 21 constituencies the hope is to win all 21, that is the nature of politics even pappy was confident of winning. Can we say that no one party can win all constituencies, absolutely not. To have or not to have an opposition is the sole responsibility of the voters, the last two elections in Grenada no opposition was voted into Parliament, the same is true of the recent Barbados election. The Prime minister is no doubt moving into campaign mode and what he is saying don’t give the UWP one seat give all to the DLP. Given a choice I wonder if Lennox Linton leader of the opposition would give up seats to the opposition if he were given a 100% mandate by the voters. To have or not to have an opposition is a voter decision it is not made by partisan political utterances.

In both these islands yes, the people spoke but you failed to note that the peoples of these two islands never wanted or called for a one party state. It is just not healthy in a democracy. I would not want the DLP, or the UWP to be a one Party government. It is not healthy for democracy and once these one party government go to parliament, they will only be talking to themselves.

I hop this was critical lesson for you hypocritical Skerrit labourites to understand and cmpthend te bigger picture and its implications.. I too concur with Alex, the prime minister have been too loose with his words. The ppl bed to demonstrate first for an apology and 2nd to demand the minister steps down from his position.
Recently in Guatemala, due to the delay of the government to respond to the volcano the ppl demonstrated for the removal of president.
Why do we allow those in authority to continue such behaviour? If the opposition or any member in high places should act in an irresponsible manner the ppl should demand they are remove from office.

It is not often that Alex Bruno and I deliver from the same hym sheet but, the truth is what it is , and I am obligated here to support him while protecting democracy on my island home. These pronouncements from Mr Skerrit are troubling as the world over the need for a robust opposition understood and encouraged. This princinple was recently demobstrated in the cery Barbados to which he refer when Bishop Arthley who had won his seat as a member of the BLP crossed the floor to become the leader of opposition.
We in Dominica need to get serious about these issues and confront them regardless we are supporters of the government or not. The future of the country and that of our future generations are at stake.

Mr. Bruno, you are right to say that there is a need for opposition and opposing views in life but if the people decide like in Grenada and Barbados that the opposition is a waste of time then there is no need for them. You Mr. Bruno should know that politicians pander to their base in various ways. Skerrit has all his rights to say what he said hoping that the people will give him what he wants. Those of you who are crying dictatorship should ask yourselves if it is dictatorship in Grenada and Barbados too. If the people decide that the opposition is lazy and inept as is supposedly the case in Dominica then they should be fired. Just recently Joseph Isaac came to the realization that the opposition is a waste of time so he left and joined forces with the government so he can be more productive. If the present opposition in Dominica is obliterated at the polls by the people it would be self inflicted.

Words cannot accurately convey the stupidity of this man’s many thoughtless statements. Ever since he was by default made the Prime Minister, he has become increasingly narcissistic and supremely arrogant. He has grotesquely exploited the ignorance of many electors to maintain a stranglehold on power. Also manipulated the numerous loopholes in the electoral system for political advantageousness. His severely corrupt administration is solely responsible for the decay and decline in the quality of life of the vast majority of the citizens. He feels emboldened to make such utterly ridiculous statements because his loyal water carriers and his sheep-like supporters are woefully ignorant about issues and are easily duped. His dictatorial utterances should be of grave concern to all Dominicans. The country is in peril and needs a leader who is magnanimous, thoughtful, trustworthy and empathetic. I also think that the opposition has some work to do, but at the end of the day I have to agree with them and also with Mr. Bruno and will add that the state of freedom of speech and right to dissent and the direction in which this is going is very concerning.

From the top with a leader who holidaying and taking pictures in people car to post on Facebook down to the last lot of them. Who when Dominicans working to rebuild offering nothing no ideas no help. It seems your Phillosophical Intelligence prohibits you to understand the stated context of the statement. You are up in arms but noticeably silent on all transgressions Opposition in nature. I am so ticked off by your hypocrisy that I am tempted to sign this comment eh…..your Impartiality has no currency in our society…..

Good try Mr. Bruno, but Dominicans are not going to listen to any of what you just stated. You will nuff thumb downs and nasty responses, wait for it man. Dem people finish, they have no more decency. I feel for the people that are living there and feeling the pain of this dicktator SR

Alex it was about time for people like you opened your mouth in the affairs of Dominica because clearly, Dominica is already in deep deep **** I don’t even know if we can bounce back. Let’s forget about Erika in 2015, that we never bounced back from and Maria in 2017, that still has us reeling. Look, agriculture is in a record low, unemployment is record low, I don’t even wish to talk about the economy because we don’t have one. Tourism is record low, Health my God, is as low as it ever gets. In fact According to a report produced by JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association Oncology, which covers 195 countries, found that Dominica has the third-highest death by cancer rate in the world, with 203.1 per 100,000 of population. Only Mongolia and Zimbabwe have higher rates. If there is one person that deserves to be FIRED is ROOSEVELT SKERRIT, who has made Dominica a fearful and dangerous place to live. But with all this, Skerrit has secured a future for his family in the…

Alex Bruno on the pedestal of hypocrisy in Dominica. What a fool!!
When I will see Alex Bruno find something to criticize, I will then consider his professionalism.

    Alex

You will be exposed soon as Sven Hughes and others are squealing about Dominica and SCL and Henley.

Which political leader talking about righteousness paid off his mortgage, which one had his son working in St Kitts and which so called pollster was a mooseboy driving ppl around.

The British will be exposing ALL soon.

If there were an opposition worth voting for, then I would do it, no problem. But the opposition in Dominica is as hopeless as the ruling party is corrupt. Where are the bright stars of this country’s future? Where are the visionaries, the enigmatic leaders who put nation before self, who put fairness and equality before wealth? I see only self-ingratiating half-wits with the potential to simply give us more of the same.

  39. Dictatorship is a CRIME
    June 9, 2018

Alex, I totally concur. Skerritt’s statement, made boldly and in public, should never be taken lightly or
    jokingly.

Remember previous pronouncements about being in “power” until 2050?
And “No LAW, No Constitution could prevent me from ………”
And, “It’s not your damn business, where we get our money from.”
And “Go to hell, go to hell, go to hell.”

They concocted a scenario about COUP, a Plot to overthrow Skerritt’s Gov’t, then talk of treason, then start to arrest opposition members willy-nilly, just to create an ugly situation to muzzle opposing voices. DICTATORS do that everywhere, every time. History tells us so.

Skerritt has publicly revealed to Dominicans, who doubted all the time, that he really wants to deepen the dictatorship. Because that kind of rule is on us already. The PATRIOTS warned long time ago.

Dominicans TAKE HEED. Skerritt tells us, in our faces that DICTATORSHIP is what he wants, NO OPPOSITION.

    Fight…

      June 9, 2018

Mr. Bruno the context of the PM speech is that Dominica does not need the current opposition given what what we know of their behavior, performance and conduct, and that is absolutely correct. His comments were referencing performance to which we can add all which we already know to include open defiance of the law in public and public incitement of others to do likewise, unsubstantiated defamation of the country in international media etc. Its a long list. A high school student can read what you have quoted and clearly infer this. Let your studying be reflected in your comments and analysis.

PMP, you have asleep in Skerrit slumber and for too long. Wake up and smell the coffee and stop looking for excuses because you have failed to put some sugar in your coffee. You thoughts here are no sweetener to us who wish to read intelligent debate and not bas to and loyal to a ailed corrupt PM and his Corrupt Labour Government. The corrupt labour arty time has come and they must go. Domininca has been hurt now for 18 years and nothing of substantial has been gained in our favour under this corrupt rich Labour regime.
so PMP (whatever this means) You need to raise your standard of commentary and here is some advice for you which I feel yo have read already but worth repeating for your own good. “Let your studying be reflected in your comments and analysis.”
Run away from Skerrit, He is a failed leader and a failed PM…and runs corrupt Labour Government. Skerrit must Go.
