COMMENTARY: Labour implodes and UWP pleads the 5th

In an attempt to remedy the plight of a plethora of incompetence in the government of the ruling Dominica Labour Party, Prime Minister Doctor, Doctor Roosevelt Skerrit has purged his party and cabinet in a manner that is only precedented by the old-time communist regimes of Stalin, Polpot and others.

Labour Party followers who gathered in Londonderry in pure cultist style, dressed in all forms of red, with drums and other paraphernalia, ready to go to battle for another five year term, left Londonderry dejected, confused, disappointed, angry and in a daze as to what had hit them.

A party that appeared to be so formidable and well poised to win 21 seats, the dream of the political leader, was in total chaos, with the rank and file membership wondering if they can even win the next general elections. The Labour Party hierarchy, with all their wisdom, had given a wanna-be dictator full authority to select candidates of his choice for the next general elections and he blew it. Now they are in damage control mode and they want to change the narrative, but the United Workers Party pleads the fifth.

Whereas the cabinet ministers took pride in attributing all their successes to the right honourable Doctor, Doctor Roosevelt Skerrit, the greatest political leader Dominica, and by extension the World, has ever seen, they never realized that they were exposing their incompetence and their inability to perform. Not one government minister ever took credit for their performance, it was always the Doctor.

At long last the façade of the Dominica Labour Party government has been unmasked and it is poetic justice and extremely ironic that the unmasking has taken place in the heat of the calypso season, hours after the calypso semi-finals which merited much discussion on the judges’ decision of the final nine, who will meet the Bobb at the grand finals. How on earth did Hunter make it to the finals with this carbon copy “Spoon and Fork In Napkin,” should have been the topic for discussion, but no, the Doctor Doctor had to steal the show with the most dramatic unmasking of a farce which the Dominican population has been living with for almost twenty years.

The Dominica Labour Party took pride in presenting itself as the most united, cohesive and unbreakable political party Dominica has ever seen. Those who did not tow the line left voluntarily out of frustration for not being able to impact their influence on the rest of the party supporters. It appeared that the Doctor had everything under control and then the unmasking came and left the Labour Party dumbfounded and even the opposition United Workers Party speechless, to the extent that the UWP decided not to comment.

An opposition party gets a gift on a platter to emasculate its opponent, for the first time in the last fifteen years, the UWP decides to take the fifth and impose their right to remain silent in fear that anything that they say may be held against them in the upcoming electoral court of justice. Here lies Dominica’s problem; an incompetent government that gets rid of two thirds of its ministers as it approaches twenty years of control over the Dominican economy and an opposition that does not recognize the need to take advantage of a golden opportunity to present itself as a viable alternative.

How can Doctor, Doctor Roosevelt Skerrit fire two thirds of his cabinet, retain the most incompetent and blatantly corrupt among them, replace the discarded with novice candidates with the least political experience Dominica has ever seen and yet the opposition pleads the fifth? The Doctor insults the intelligence of the Dominican population that the change they have been asking for has finally arrived, not with a fifth term in office for the Dominica Labour Party but with the first term of the second four term cycle. Dominicans appear to have swallowed this new theory and the opposition’s response seems to be in agreement.

The Doctor, Doctor’s action gives rise to many concerns but the two most significant are; 1) what type of cabinet ministers would allow themselves to be humiliated in the manner in which they were with the Doctor discarding them in the eyes of the world and they remain in the government awaiting an election which they have no idea when it will be called.

2).The Doctor, Doctor is a gambler, he is boldface and must have a hold over his group of incompetent ministers to the extent that he can fire them; tell the world that they are useless but not one will take objection. The Doctor, Doctor’s only promise to them is that they will be taken care of well, apparently through a hefty compensation package that should include cash and a position of authority such as ambassadorships. Some of the discarded only served one term and will not qualify for parliamentary pension.

A Dominica Labour Party victory at the next general elections will bring in the most inexperienced, novice and incompetent government Dominica and the Caribbean have ever seen. It is generally accepted that the ministers who were retained were the most incompetent and corrupt.

The remnants of the cabinet were retained for different reasons; you do not upset Portsmouth; you cannot touch the Rotweiler; cannot take a chance with the military man and the remaining three ladies are as meek as lambs, they are there to compliment the rest of the female team who he hopes to join him.

So, in pure Gaddafi style, the Doctor, Doctor has sought refuge from his caucus of women who he hopes will protect him from any male chauvinistic threat. With ten women, including his wife, and himself, the Doctor, Doctor will be insulated from any potential threat. It will be interesting to see who the King will appoint as his successor, the obvious choice will be the queen, but the unconstitutional deputy will not take it lying down, so some more drama will surface down the road. The only other potential threat was redeployed to Roseau North in a suicidal move. He must have been well compensated for his treacherous defection from the UWP, now he can afford to end his political career.

Dominica’s ascension to maturity, when life should begin at 40, appears to be challenged with a Dominica Labour Party administration, the first three years of which will be for training the new, inexperienced recruits in the basics of governance. If after almost twenty years the incumbents could not step up to the plate, the expectations from the new group are definitely lower and since the opposition has taken the fifth, it is unclear that their slate of candidates will be any better.

Dominica appears to be confronting a crisis of incompetent or inadequate parliamentary representation. The two major political parties have succeeded in scaring capable persons away from involvement in active politics through their vitriol, slander and demonization to the extent that those who present themselves for Labour are usually well compensated financially so therefore the Price is Right and on the other hand those who present themselves for the UWP are sufficiently bitter and angry, so they are prepared to face the insults and demonization. Others lament the disintegration of the political environment in Dominica and whisper in fear of being heard or aligned by either of the competing tribes.

The recent action of Doctor, Doctor Roosevelt Skerrit in discarding more than two-thirds of his cabinet is admittance of his government’s failure over the last twenty years. If the discarded ones are worse than those he retained, then this says a lot. The population awaits the next move of the UWP, but so far their slate of candidates does not appear to be any better than what the Doctor, Doctor presented and Dominica may very well be confronted with the worst set of candidates since independence.

Now is an opportune time for a government of National Unity which comprises of the best and most capable sons and daughters of the soil. The environment should be created for the participation of a slate of independent candidates who can bridge the gap and bring sanity and some political healing to this suffering and divided nation.

Come ye forward sons and daughters! Bring an end to this political tribalism, for those who do not know, Dominica is the least developed within the OECS, but Dominica has the resources and the wherewithal to prosper but the divisive politics must change, thus the need for electoral reform which should not only be limited to the bloated voters list and identification cards.

There is no doubt that Doctor, Doctor Roosevelt Skerrit has outlived his relevance, power has corrupted his judgement and he must be relieved from the leadership of the nation or Dominicans will pay the price in the next five years which will make Maduro look like a saint. The supreme power has intervened with divine intervention, will the population discern?

Lol. If you attack an imploding system, you run the risk of rallying the deserting troops against you. Better leave them alone. Let the troops realise that the opponent is not evil after all. So I support the move by the UWP; let the troops desert with a little bit of honour.

I must the writer of this commentary has some merits, even if I don’t agree with everything written. I’m in total agreement that the Island is in need of competent people to govern as there’s a lack on all sides, but more so on the side of the incompetent rogues posing as government! A Dominican British Citizen once said to me that the people of the Island do not like people who can get things done and I totally agree. As for the ones who seems to be more academically inclined or what we call educated are only singing for their supper and in need of a job for survival. These rogue leadass and his new labar party had a bunch of incompetent vagabonds whom he has now discarded for a worse group of candidass who only sees the dollars that the rogue leadass is using to purchase all those who are willing to prostitute themselves to a pimp who is gambling the Island. It’s a shame and disgrace on those who are supposed to know better, for allowing the gambling of the island in such a…

Kalinago, I agree with 100% that this corrupt labour government under Skerrit must Go. They have failed, have been incompetent, useless and lack vision. I therefore welcome 100% the UWP Team an extremely professional trusted developmental group with experience working in government, overseas and engaged in own personal company. They are good and prepared to take Dominica back, under their formidable Leader Hon. Lennox Linton, who has singularly exposed Skerrit and his corrupt Labour government for the abuse of states funds relating to the Bin and Fertilizer Bobol. They have abused their authority purchased without proper protocol and their corrupt habits has not change since. Look around Dominica and tell us where the development is taking place other than the pockets of these Labour people and their friends and surrogates all over selling our passports and we know not where and how our money is spent, while you and I and poor families suffering to keep going. Skerrit, Get Lost. Go

Ohhhhh yes, as we read the more our spirits are high for saving Dominica that our UWP is uplifted and ready to take office. Skerrit and his failed corrupt Labour government must go. We had enough of 19n years of this corrupt faced regime and immature Prime (Odd) minister. Skerrit must Go.

It makes a difference who you vote for. Elections have consequences. With all the concern about Skerrit I would much rather vote for Labor than the incompetence of the UWP. The UWP is simply incapable of governing. If they form the government then the government that replaces them will have to pay millions of dollars to fix the damage that they will cause. Remember how the UWP destroyed our country in the past? Labor is better than UWP any day.

    what a BIG Joke you have posted    . Like it or not Labor days are over just as Massa (Tony) day is done! The “Slaughter at Londerry” on RED Sunday has clearly shown who is incapable of governing. Sadly, all the discarded nincompoops are crying in private but will stay moo moo because they just love the fact that the incapable, corrupt emperor has finally shown his hands. In other words, “The emperor is left with no clothes”. I will not be surprised if the new candidate for Castle Bruce does not take the money and run because its alleged that she is acknowledging to certain people that she does not expect to win but could not refuse the money……you heard it here first.

Whenever elections are called the UWP will get a beating of epic proportion, this will happen because they continue to believe their own BS. The DLP is not going to surrender they will be fighting for every vote. Many people are fed up with this constant character assination by the UWP, they want to hear the plans that the UWP has to move the country forward not a never ending chorus that Skeritt must go.

      Alison Diazani Madueke
      Francesco Corallo,etc
By allowing Ross, our greatest FDI company to leave.
      By killing, agriculture,tourism ,manufacturing,etc.
By having you march up financial center for $5 to buy bread, milk, rice, flour, etc.
By LYING about construction of international airport.
By not being able to account for more than US$ 100 000 000.00 debt forgiveness
By not having accountability for CBI funds.
Guess if you had a brain you would shut the hell up,instead of pushing your foot in your red mouth.
Is this present DLP under lazy Skerrit a government? Maybe yes. But a roguish one I tell you!
You are so blind folded that you do not even know that this UWP does not have anyone who has served as a government minister.

I take it that you have no idea how a country`s economy and budgeting is received and expensed on behalf of us, and the people of Dominica. The states financial resources is placed in trusted hands of the sitting government and the Opposition is there as a watch dog that there are no thievery, Bobol, and corruption, all in one the misuse and abuse of states money. That is what we have now under this failed labour corrupt Government under its failed and inept Prime (Odd) Minister, the name is Skerrit who has failed us and this man has surrounded himself with fake, nefarious people only there for their own interests, so they have attracted and hooked themselves on Skerrit. They know this is not the Hon Linton, why they are scared of him and his trusted UWP Team. Key is accounatabity and protection of states fund. Hon Linton & Team UWP we await.

Etc., Go research and find out who it is. Today I know that he has condemned this fake Skerrit corrupt labour government as failure engaged in bobol and incompetent. The values of labour eg, agriculture and development this 2019 Labour G0vernment has failed us big time and they ust Go. Skerrit has been this hypocritical failed Odd Minister and he must Get lost and go read a book. Dominicans have happily decided that Skerrit must go and have already decided fully that we await for the decency and honour of UWP Leader, Hon Lennox Linton and his professional UWP Team waiting to bring decency in government and stability in Domininca. Our people need this.

Well, you are really Jaded. Go open your eyes and thoughts. For your information The UWP is highly capable of governing and you are unable to compare Hon Linton, with this failed inept Skerrit who has ruined our nature isle in endless Bobol and now our people are in ruins and deep poverty and unemployed. Is that what makes you like this failed Skerrit after 18 years in government with no jobs, no more agriculture, as they have been engaged i Bin and Fertilizer Bobol and they ied with Tony and others defending them to hide their thievery and when Hon Linton, the patriot reveal their lies and thievery , they should it was a mistake. The head of the Labour government should have been arrested and that is why he scared of losing the election. But wi Skerrit will go, Labour must Go, they have destroyed us.

For once I agree with what Skerritt has done to the ministers who were discarded like empty plastic containers. These followers were empty and lightweight in the way that they could not take any credit for themselves and their staff for the work done by their ministries. These incompetent people will get no sympathy from their unmotivated staff nor from the wider patriotic citizenry. They allowed Skerritt to get swell-headed and think he is an emperor. Now the faux emperor, double doctorate dude, has given them their just deserves. The leadership of the UWP is making a mistake by remaining silent on this golden opportunity to peel away disaffected Labourites. It’s not too late for the UWP to reach out to these Labourites and convince them to come over to the side of good governance. The wholesale changing of ministers by Skerritt is a clear sign that he had failed to bring progress to Dominica and the drowning man is throwing a Hail Mary hoping it will save him.

I am not try to monopolize the site by writing too many comments; however, since I can only write 170 words per submission sometimes it becomes necessary to do a continuation.

The reason they all give credit to their god Roosevelt is because he is the puppet master dictator, who have wind the puppets around his small finger, and they fear him: because without Roosevelt they cannot eat. It is a shame without politics there is no future for all of them!

Here is a for instance Let me focus on Austrie, an old man I know way back when I was a young lad; he claims he is a chemist trained in Guyana. I don’t know perhaps in bush medicine. Nevertheless, why would someone who said he has a degree in chemistry would prefer to take a security (watchman) job a Ross University school of medicine prior Roosevelt giving him a job?

So, I read “the UWP took the fifth.” In American law a criminal or witness takes the fifth which allows them to remain silent and not answer questions if they know the answer they give will incriminate themselves, and get them into trouble. Do we have a fifth amendment written in our constitution?

Dominica is not part of America; so the American fifth is not counted in Dominica.

The Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution addresses criminal procedure and other aspects of the Constitution. It was ratified in 1791 as part of the Bill of Rights.

This is very well written understanding of the political climate of Dominica …..the perception …of our situation …..have the UWP understood the obvious rise of the Dictatior ….are they making overtures to the fallen comrades of Labour …?
Among the massive ruthlessness of Skerritt is that only now on the eve of an election is the appointment of Ambrise George as Ambassador of the falling nation of Venezuela ….leaving Poor Ambrose to be at the mercies of Trump and the USA…..was it not Dr Phibert Aaron the Ambassador ?
What became of him and the very efficient PR person wife OP Kamela Jno Bapriste ?
Their drop from public view remains a mystery for their dismissal by Skerritt ….
Really the writer sounds intelligent but what has happened to the Bar Assiciation DAIC and other luminaries of intellect in Dominica ?

Thank you for these observations, and thank you to the writer of the original commentary. I particularly like your observation that ” it is when Lennox came into the ring after being taunted by labour operatives Skeritt troubles began Between you and me UWP is labour party worst nightmare”. And Skeritt know it well, as aptly demonstrated in that well-publicized outburst in Parliament recently. To me, what I actually heard the guy saying was more like … ” why don’t you just disappear … or just die, Lennox!!!” Indeed it has been my expressed opinion that if nothing else, Lennox and the UWP should be rewarded with at least one term in office, simply for being the only ones brave (bold … intuitive … ) enough to challenge Skeritt and his shinanigans. While most of the article is well written and knocks the nail on the head, the suggestion that the opposition parties particularly the UWP has pleaded the 5th is ridiculous to say the least. It is clear that the writer does not understand “opposition” politics or is rallying for a new political party to join the fray by sewing discord among current opposition forces and the electorate.

The “Londonderry Slaughter” which took place on “RED Sunday” will go down in history as the biggest” fauxpas” by any political leader after the mistakes of former DLP Prime Minister in 1979 Mr. Patrick Roland John. But time is on Dominicans side and the evil regime of Tony Astaphan, Melissa Skerrit, Reggie Austrie and Roosevelt Skerrit is headed down-hill fast. God is indeed good all the time

The Dominica Labour Party would do well to realign and rethink their position. Skerrit, Austrie, Douglas and Blackmoore should be thrown out of the DLP because they do not stand anymore for DLP values but rather use the party for their own agenda. Dominica has a Dictatorship in the making and all citizens should be aware of that irrespective of their party book. All this is not a party issue no more but rather a country issue. I feel 60-70% of the Dominican population would agree with that assessment, the remainder just politically baised. The problem is we just need change, but only incompetent options available. I estimate there 15-20,000 eligible voters in Dominica who dont vote, assuming out of a 70,000 population ~55,000 on island can vote yet only 35-40,000 actually cast ballots. My best guess is the next election will have the lowest voter turnout since independence.
If the UWP loses it wont be due to lack of electoral reform, but due to their inability to motivate voters.

Dominicans hate the truth. The fact is that over the last two elections only 41,000 electors voted. But there constituencies where UWP has lost strength. All the Roseau Constituencies, Salisbury for instance.

I do agree with you that UWP has failed to comment and destroy DLP on the disunity which abounds in their camp. I don’t know why!!!
I mean Labourites are cursing each other over choice of candidates, discarded ministers are bitterly complaining and cursing former supporters . It’s total commess .. I believe UWP could at least have a major public meeting to add more salt to Labour’s wound!
UWPites please don’t blame the writerfor the truth!! He/she is correct…!!
Good Observation, and Brilliant piece indeed!!!

Whoever wrote this commentary is to be complimented; an accurate observation of political divide on Dominica. Time is overdue for UWP moving Isle of Beauty, Isle of Splendour forward in a positive process. I anticipate attending a great celebratory show in NYC for the blue sea of change.

Good commentary!. Dominica no doubt, is a poor country with very scarce resources controlled by Gov’t. Many good intelligent folks will not put themselves up for politics because simply, Fear of victimization (we know of the hundreds of stories thus far). This leaves us with a few who are just plain opportunists (I want my share too). The oppositions (UWP, DFP) does not have access to resources that the DLP has constantly abused to their benefit (events have been politicized and funded by the state e.g renaming of the airport and opening of Roseau bridge). The DLP has many cult-like supporters who will never change, with even if they know wrongs. They believe that Dominica only existed when Skerrit became PM and Dominica will cease to exist without him. This Gov’t has done an excellent job at promoting their leader as divine, even while all evidence has shown that he has been a total failure. This election we are going to, yet again” be bombarded by pretty pictures, we will be in…

“They believe that Dominica only existed when Skerrit became PM and Dominica will cease to exist without him”. That is because Skerrit used and abused states money through th Red Clinic and gave out all kinds of cash to people. That is a state of abuse and robbery ad that is what some people like of Skerrit? Yo mean we are so poor and fallen like Haiti and Venezuela and we are scared and blind to see the truth of hoe Skerrit has hurt Domininca and reduced our people to beggars and receiving handout. Dominicans please wake up and kick Skerrit and his corrupt Labour government out.
Let us welcome Hon. Linton and his professional decent honest UWP team,

Very interesting article to read and this commentary is welcomed. It is not usual to read such engaging commentaries in the local press. However, I disagree with the author on two points. The UWP chose not to comment on the situation in which the original candidate of Skerrit for the Marigot constituency found herself because the UWP did not want it to appear to be involved in the fracas and thereby accused of getting involved in gutter politics which they have disavowed and second the candidate is related to the leader of the UWP. I also do not agree with the commentator that the UWP’s list of candidate are as bad as that of the Doctor Doctor. On the whole, the UWP’s slate has more relevant experience and more competence based on their professional record and community involvement.

When a political party that is in power discards an overwhelming majority of its current ministers for an upcoming election, the message becomes perfectly clear, they have admitted that they are an abysmal failure. To add salt to the wound, these repudiated ministers were replaced with all neophytes. Only the completely blind diehards would think of lending support to such a disorganized, shambolic concoction. The Supreme leader governs the country as if it is his personal business and his colleagues rubber stamp all his desires. They milk the breast of the treasury dry while the majority of the populace live in abject poverty and depend on the Red Clinic for sustenance. Skerrit and his handpicked sycophants must be soundly rejected at the next polls. From their shockingly appalling performance they don’t deserve one seat.

The opening statement of your comment is not based on an informed observation. You being a chronic critic will always judge things based on what is outside your content of understanding, simply to satisfy your political partisan beliefs and It must also be noted that you are not privy to certain information within The DLP. Wow, is The DLP really a disorganized, shambolic concoction, the only way we will know the truth of your statement is the results of the upcoming the general elections not your eloquent use of words.

Why make such claims regarding the use of funds being taken away from The Treasury, this is such a cheap nonsenscial accusation. Do you really believe that the majority of the populace live in abject poverty and depend on the Red Clinic for sustenance, is this what your political patisan beliefts done to your mind making you write such ludicrous statement ignoring reason. Why call the newly handpicked candidates by The DLP sycophants, pity you.

Gary, this you when I read your statement above. You must have just landed in Domininca via a life boat or dropped from the skies from the very Red corrupt incompetent pilot.
This is how I define your thoughts: They are the same words you used upon the previous writer IBO France: I work within the ministry and everyday we see, hear of and execute of unprotocal behavior, cash flowing and the services of government are being ignored and compromised. Skerrit is a Damn failure and has reduced us to poverty and deprivation. NO more agriculture but passports sells like hot bread and no socio-economic development taking place, but our people reduce to beggars under the guise of failed Skerrit. Sad,. That fraud we are not allowed to intervene
“Claims regarding the use of funds being taken away from The Treasury, You being a chronic critic will always judge things based on what is outside your content of understanding,

What a waste of your imagination, I’m referring to your opening statement in your comment, such a cheap way to discredit me. Do think that when you make the assertion you work for The Government that gives you credibility, pitiful and wishful thinking. Your political motivation takes precedence over your credibility as a source for an honest view as to what is taking place in Dominica economically and politically, yes, you are entitled to your opinion but do not ignore facts, and distort the reality as to what is taking place in Dominica.

I wonder if you understand what socio-economic development
means, before you make such foolish claims about there, is no socio-economic development in Dominica, wow. The housing revolution, The yes we care program for seniors, the scholarships to students, funding and training for small businesses, isn’t this all going towards an improvement of living stands of people economically and socially…

Brilliant piece! A DLP in chaos and disarray..Supporters are publicly derogating each other. What a shame. Who will vote for a party who is at war with itself?
The Londonderry gathering solidify what most Dominicans knew. DLP is a cannot do party, led by a cannot do uncomfortable leader. Shame on labourites who have allowed Skerrit to destroy this once powerful organisation!!

I am interested in the contents and message of this article. If the author wanted to give his name he would have, we all understand this. This person may be a civil servant, as many have written incognito and the sharks are out there to slaughter them. Focus on getting failed immature Skerrit and his rotten corrupt Labour government out of our states funds. We do no attract them, they have failed us and too much Bobol and misuse of states funds, our tax money. Skerrit must Go, Get out, you are a big failure and you and your corrupt Labour government has killed our economy and our agriculture.

Who is the author of this commentary ? I agree with all what you said except the jabs at the opposition The fact that Skerit is confused and afraid is because of the opposition’s hard work They have been on his rass like blue in the sky since 2009 I got sprayed with teargas twice The opposition is not into all this cenema and show business They took their time to analyse Londonderry and they have responded in a press conference I am sure by now you’ve heard the brilliant presentation by the opposition leader Cool calm and collective no rush to judgment If you are in any doubt it is when Lennox came into the ring after being taunted by labour operatives Skerit troubles began Between you and me UWP is labour party worst nightmare ever Smoke that….
