COMMENTARY: Let us honor Brother Jeff Joseph by granting his wish

Jeff Joseph always dreamt of having Carlos Santana perform at World Creole Music Festival

Firstly, let me on behalf of my wife and family extend heart-felt condolences to the family, friends, fans, and well wishers; and by extension,  to all Dominicans, on the occasion of the untimely passing  of Prince Jeff Joseph . Indeed he is and will always remain a musical icon, patriot, and a visionary.  May his soul rest in peace.

The purpose of this article is to humbly request that all those involved in the planning of The 2012 World Creole Music Festival dedicate next year’s event to the memory of Prince Jeff Joseph.

Also, I would like to appeal to Management of The Dominica Festival Commission to honour our Brother Jeff by implementing his vision and dream to have CARLOS SANTANA as the feature artist at the 2012 World Creole Music Festival.

It is very well known that Prince Jeff Joseph has expressed this dream of having his friend Carlos Santana feature on the World Creole Music festival stage for years now!!!! Indeed, during conversation while having lunch at The Guyave Restaurant  with Matt Peltier and friends last year during the festival Brother Jeff Joseph was very clear to us that he views a performance here in Dominica at The World Creole Festival by World Superstar Carlos Santana as the ideal way to take that event to the ultimate global audience; as the festival’s name implies.

He again expressed this wish in his off stage interview after performing at the festival this year.   We cannot afford to miss this gem of an idea and opportunity as we honour our Brother Jeff.

Further , in our conversation last year Jeff was very clear that he thinks that the time has come for the World Music Festival to feature  truly global artists and he thought that Carlos Santana  was the perfect International Creole fusion band that could take The World by storm and attract a wider range of music fans  from  Europe, North , South and Central America, The Caribbean, Africa, and The Asian Sub Continent.

If we say that we really care about honouring this great son of Dominica and his life’s work; we need to do all in our power to fulfill his dream. This is how legacies are kept alive and passed on to succeeding generations. Also, our up and coming musicians need to take couple pages out of THE BOOK OF THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF JEFF JOSEPH!!!

Let us also honour our Brother’s memory by continuing to promote and live out his dream and values of tolerance, peace, taking care of people in need, true human and Godly Love, world citizenship , care for community ,sticking to one’s roots, honour of family and  being able to walk with kings and queens while maintaining the common touch!!

Once again, deepest condolences and may his soul rest in peace.

Anonymous you are so right I wish I knew who you are you are wise. That’s why its good to be open minded and listen to others points of view s. How ever it should only be made mention if Santana is brought to the festival that he was a friend of Jeff Jo and he “NOW” wants to be a friend of Dominica. But it should not be said that his attendance at the WCMF is solely because of Jeff JO and Santana Alone cannot generate the Whole True Sense Of Commemorating What Jeff Jo stood for and how we should Remember him. So draw the lines Clearly. You are also Right the Dominican Musicians will have to have there own Jam to remember Jeff Jo and it doesn’t have to be a rush either. As a Dominican Musician I will make sure every Dominican Musician has to here this if I reach them one by one and remember That the WCMF was born because of the Dominican Musician we are disrespected Alive and DEAD by the WCMF and other people for profit. Some one said it well that Jeff Jo May he RIP was our Michael Jackson….It hadn’t been one day after his burial and this conversation is happening….Its all about money first the people of St Joseph need to know about this ……………..sad story

Carlos Santan is a well known musician to many people outside Dominica; Its clear because some people on this forum are asking who he is.Santana can be invited some other time however If We Dominicans are to truely honor our Brother and fellow Musisian Jeff Jo we must do so by inviting the Dominican musicians back home to a huge DOMINICAN MUSICIAN REUNION. Believe me that year would be one of the most successful seasons the WCMF will ever see.Jeff Jo is Family he is not for profit. This jam should not be rushed it sould be done in 2013 or later …..Does any one agree with me? the best celebration for brother Jeff joe will be to here the sound of Grammacks; Exile one ;Midnight Groovers;Swining Stars Black Affairs (we are already Back)Bells combo; Liquid Ice; WCK; Tripple K;and other Dominican Artiste; add Kassav ; Tabu combo and Byron Lee and that will be the most wicked weekend Dominica WCMF will ever see in a while,,,,,I would like to here from other Dominican Musician …Let the Dominican Community also say how they want to Celebrate our Brother Jeff jo life ….He was like a brother to many of us besides His own immidiate family he was a brother to Dominicans too lets keep focused…. He may have wanted Santana to play at the WCMF but but this is a Family affair. Thank you
    May he RIP one love

This is your outlook of the Creol Fest for 2012. However,it is clearly stated that Jeff Joe wanted Carlos Santana to performed at the festival that would in turn attract other international artist which will attract more outsiders. That in return would boots the economy in the land. Bring back the past Dominican bands to play is a wonderful idea. They should have that celibration on a different date which woul just focus on Dominica Past and local band. It is like St. lucia international Jazz festival.

Jefferson Joseph is now gone, but his legacy should bew etched in every Dominicans memory,Jeff was no ordinary Joe, His humility and talent was extraordinary, his stage presence and performance was unlike any other, in fact almost non other artist today in the caribbean come marginally close to Jeff on stage, besides the stage Jeff opened doors few Dominicans could imagine, remember Superbowl of 1979, Jeff Joseph nd the Grammacks are still today the only Caribbean Artist to perform at HALF TIME IN SUPERBOWL,you have to be good to have the NFL feature you on their NFL SUPERBOWL Show.
Jeff to us in Dominica and the wider caribbean should be what Michael Jackson was to Pop Music, legendary, build a shrine , a Museum, so that the young generation of Dominicans must never forget that we had a great visionary amongst us and that we too can be like the late great Sir Jeff Joseph.

Carlos Santana in Dominica is a no brainer, for me it is a definite yes,However the question must be asked, Can Dominica Handle a show like this given the promotion it needs to make it successful, can we hande the influx of latin and Caribbean visitors here in Dominica .
Think carefully my people, if Jeff Joe thinks we should bring Carlos to Dominica, then lets bring him, but lets be prepared to handle the influx of visitors first.

If we are overly worried about the bill, and want Wcmf just fir our local population, then let’s play it safe and leave Mr. Santana where he is. However, if we are thinking to take our festival to the next level to attract the Latino population including Spain, other parts of Europe, parts of Asia, u.s. And Canada and the Dutch and English caribbean and even the Aussies, yes they too love him then let me Santana’s CV speak for itself. If we can get him and we are allowed live recording we could set up a pay per view system for those not in attendance. I say again a strategic plan with proper networking needs to be in order but the idea must be worked on ASAP. Strike the iron while it’s hot.

Thank you for the history of Carlos Santana, These other Fu Fu musicians come and go but Carlos is a true legend. And if the masses in DA don’t like him don’t fret people from around the world will follow him to Dominica.Put the price up sky high on that night you will get your money back. I haven’t seen him perform in over 15 years but even back then I’m sure I paid 40 or 50 US to go to his show. Carlos who? You need to travel and open your ears and mind. RIP Jeff

      December 4, 2011

Yeah,..you are welcome,friend..I always do my best to inform accurately,as well as educate also, whenever I write a comment…That’s always my objective, moto and goal….I thank you.

However,I do believe the masses in Dominica like Carlos Santana, and will pay good money to see his performance(s). They know, love, and appreciate good music. Besides one or two ignorant idiots, the majority of Dominicans know and love their music. They also know Superstars and very good musicians as well…It use to be our way of life…It were what we grew up on,and listened to….(I often wonder if it still is)…

Dominica,in my humble opinion, produced lots of very good musicians;Singers/Songwriters; even great ones too.
The great and deadly Fitzroy(Fitzy)Williams, The great Gordon Henderson, Julie Mourillon, Vivian Wallace, PEPE, The great Julien(Drunken G)Martin,..please don’t tell him I called him “Drunken G”…He will kill me.
Rome(Ibis)Lawrence, Alvin Lawrence…just to name a few…and OH Yes..The great Andrew Bird(Jimi Stone,Stone Ranger)Bellony..who in my opinion;(and I know I am going to get killed for this) is one of the greatest Guitarists/Drummers,if not the greatest to ever come out of Dominica;simply because of his natural skills and talents(Singer/Songwriter)…That Brother is lethal, he is most deadly….

I know there are much more,so let me apologize to the ones whom I left out,or forgot to mention…But all in all we are not bad. We did well…
And I did not even mentioned “Singers/Songwriters”…(NASIO..my friend, please don’t get vex with me,you know I’ve got your back)..that is for a next chapter…..

So,yes,The Great Carlos Santana would be a tremendous boost to our Festival…He would help take it to another level in terms of exposure and “legitimacy”(you know,I had some reservations about using that word, but I left it nonetheless),and also true global awareness….Even helping to pave the way for other Global Superstars to attend and perform…See how an International Airport would benefit, facilitate and assist us?…Well that in it self is for another chapter…This is why those in authority needs vision, and must get the big idea,as well as the big picture. We must learn to think outside the box…..Anyway…

Peace and Seasons Greetings to you, friend.

      All the very best.

@Joe(“Joseph”)…Now when you set honey, how can a fly like me resist?…This is entrapment, you are baiting me aren’t you?….
You very well know that my all time favorite is the late JIMI HENDRIX-The Greatest in History….Another Great Guitarist who left us much too early was the late STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN(SRV).
Then there are Great ones like…Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, Joe Bonamasso, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, B.B.King, Albert King, Chuck Berry, Eddie Van Halen, Buddy Guy,Muddy Waters, Tony Iommi, Elmore James, Joe Perry, Prince, Derick Trucks, Neil Young, Slash, Bonnie Raitt, and Bird Bellony..Man, so many countless others…..I have to stop now, this is getting too ridiculous…Did you have to do this to me….Man!….

        Peace…One Love…and..Have yourself a very Merry Christmas.

Ah Uptown..I mean ‘Rebel’, I agree Jimmy Hendrix IS still the greatest. The only guitarist I know to tune his guitar while ripping incredible lines without missing a note…with one hand.

Like you said we can go on and mention one of Carlos’ favorite players John Mclaughlin(Marvishnu), George Benson, Satriani, Zyro,….Ok let’s stop there then:-)

Well keep your 2 cents in your pocket and shut your mouth. It is people like you who forget the important contributions by elders to the culture and posterity. It is people like you who never appreciate the trail blazers and the difficulty they faced to make PEOPLE LIKE YOU enjoy the things of now!

    @’hahaha’ .. Not a problem, for Rhianna, Janet Jackson, Mary J, J-Lo there’s always 2013-14-15…

And I don’t think comments should cry you down for the suggestion but as some do here we can simply point out the royalty of Santana as being top class, a class of his own.

In a sense you can’t have Santana for 1 hour, it has to be a 90 min to 2 hr show: Just too much world class material for him to cover, but you will have achieved truely world-class to have him.

PS: I have also suggested Yosour Endour of Senegal and or Salief Keita. Top class!

  19. A fitting gesture..
    December 3, 2011

A fitting gesture from Carlos Santona would be to do the concert for free – with proceeds going to a Jeff Joseph Music Scholarship

  20. December 3, 2011

    While i doe not object to such an idea;
    that would be great if the price is right;
however i will say it again, it’s best to deal with what we have at hand,
an All Star Band, with Fitzroy Williams; Freddie Nicholas; Cornell Phillp; and the rest can be selected acordinly, and play all Jeff’s hits, in 2012 WCMF:
I rest my case;I will be watching if God give me the previlage; RIP JEFF:

And of course Zyro St. Hilaire on lead guitar and manufacture a spot for his brother Perez “Big Anvil” St.Hilaire> Heard tell that a dude asking who is Carlos Santana. I’m a ’70,s child and had my head blown by the likes of Eric Clapton, Pete Towneshend, Jimi “the Axe” Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield, Rod Stewart and them man was standing on the big shoulders of B.B. King, John Lee Hooker and a pardner called McKinley Morganfield better known as Muddy Waters and my brudda, Carlos Santanna was right up there with the best of them. Don’t try that at home.

    • !!!
      December 3, 2011

Clearly, you are an IDIOT!…You know absolutely NOTHING about MUSIC!…..

That was my first reaction…Then, here comes reason, which leads me to understand that obviously, you are a young person, who knows very little about music,or great musicians….so I digress…and also, let me apologize.

Carlos Santana, is a great guitarist/ musician…He is a global Superstar, who was born in Mexico…In 1955, at the age of 8, he moved to Tijuana, the border city between Mexico and California…In the early 1960s, his family moved to San Francisco,Ca.,USA.,where he went to High school…..Just as he finished School in 1965, the city’s music scenes exploded, exposing him to a wealth of revelations–electric blues, African rhythms and modern jazz; and guitar mentors…
I do believe,he won his first Grammy Award in 1987, for his solo album..”Blues for Salvador”.

Let me name you 5 songs from the top of my head….”Black magic woman”…”Oye Como Va”,…In 1999,the Guitarist released his 35th Album–“Soul Sacrifice”,by early 2000, the album had sold 10 million copies Worldwide, and spawned a No.1 hit single “Smooth”.-and by the way, that album won him 9 (nine) Grammy Awards…included; Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year (Smooth)…Santana tied Michael Jackson’s 1983 record for most Grammy Awards won in a single year by an Artist..(8)…
In 2002 he released an album..”Shaman”, and won another Grammy for the song..”Game of Love”….

May I continue please,…”Jingo”…”Everything’s Coming Our Way”….”Hope You Feeling Better”… ….”Evil Ways”….”Gypsy Woman”…”It’s a Jungle Out There”….just to name a few.(sorry ,I went beyond the five that you asked for)… But I can go on and on.
In 2009, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award….

If you did not know,…now you know…

So you see, don’t be too quick to shoot from the lips if you are ignorant of the facts…

Carlos would be great for our WCMF, but sadly,I am afraid ‘Jude Nicholas” is right; the price will be steep…Although,I must admit, Mr.Santana is a very approachable and reasonable man…With the right connection, and some conviction, he would be very happy to make a guess appearance, to help promote our festival globally….He loves the stage; he loves to perform LIVE…and lives for live audiences…..It is worth an attempt,at the very least….

      PEACE!.

Under which rock this imbecile crawl from? Carlos Santana’s music is the cream. Pity you.Santana has played it all, even reggae and Compa. I have followed this artist for 40 years. There is no doubt about it Jeff knew what he was talking about. Any of us who have seen ore heard Santana fusion of his cultural music with Rock and other international sounds will recognize the benefit of having such an artist. There is no doubt that most of our artist from chelate 60’s to early 80’s listened to and learnt from this musician.

I absolutely agree with this article. Question is, it’s a risk and is Dominica ready to take it? For the true business man, that’s a no brainer -it’s a done deal. Businessmen men take risks. In my own opinion I’ve seen more money spent on projects that have no profitable returns on countless occasion. I say, if a well thought out strategic plan is laid out and if the people believe that it will work it’s gonna work (e.g. In research studies give the control group of people a pseudo pill while they think they get the real pill like the experimental group, their feelings improve just the same. Hence, good method plus belief = desired outcome.) WCMF now is your time to think outside the box. You attain two things in one keeping Jeff’s legacy alive and changing the platform of what can become a mega enterprise. Carlos Santana is a “hit” not a “miss.”. Just ask Macys what happens whenever Carlos is there to do a fragrance promo-traffic jam in store. He has a world wide audience, and dedicated followers. I leave it to Dominica to decide the rest but a small island can think big and take risks. Do a risk assessment if needs be but please don’t let this idea die.

He can be persuaded, if the right people get involve. It can be accomplished…I know one guy,who can get it done, though I won’t say his name;..for now.. The problem is convincing that guy to contact Carlos….
It has a lot to do with connections, baby…

Yes, it will take some US$, but like I said, Carlos is a reasonable, and approachable man…with the right people, along with accommodations, equipments, lighting, logistics etc. It is not out of reach…It is not impossible.

        Keep your fingers crossed…….

        Peace…and…One Love.
