Garbage disposal problem in Portsmouth

Dear Editor,

I wish to draw to your attention a garbage disposal problem in Portsmouth which is quickly spiraling out of control.

Portsmouth is a touristic town with a vibrant yacht tourism industry. Yachties who visit the town usually promenade through the streets. Our citizens do not deserve to be exposed to an environment that is littered with garbage and an impending health hazard.

The council does not have any equipment i.e trucks, landfill / dump site to deal with the continuously increasing quantities of garbage being disposed of by its residents.

The Dominica Solid Waste Corporation does not seem to have the capacity either to properly deal with the situation, as far as I understood last October they have only two compactor trucks which service the island. DSW provides a very erratic service to the community and even when they do come they do not collect material such as waste and silt from the gutters.

Given the history of and geography of Portsmouth it is quite easy for there to be an outbreak of typhoid or dengue, as with the drains clogged with garbage and garbage strewn all over, these are ideal breeding grounds for
mosquitoes.

Appeals for assistance from central government have so far been unfruitful.

I urge you to bring the resources of your organization to bear on this issue and to launch an investigation into the matter ASAP.

Sincerely,
Ashton Riviere (Councilor)

That is a BLOODY SHAME. Where is the mayor of the town? He is the same one who wanted to be the Parliamentary Representative. HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR spends more time out of state than he does in the town. I understand that there are at least two proposals on the table at council to solve this very problem – one from Central Government and one from the Mayor’s fellow councillor. The Mayor should pick any one of the two for BOTH OF THEM ARE GREAT PROPOSALS work on it and at the same time negotiate with central government/ministry of health, DSWC or any other land owner so the garbage that is not collected and all the other waste from the ditches and sidewalks can be properly disposed of. MR. MAYOR DO YOUR JOB. If you cannot then the next professional executive thing to do is to assign that responsibility to the many talented people on your council or anyone else in the town – take your pick.
By the way this has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with LABOUR POWER!

People should take full responsiblity of cleaning after themselves. Why are we always ready to blame government or some else for our messes. I guess since everyone becomes modern, then we will continue to cry for help. Cleanliness is the way to good health and it begins at home.

    Shame on us.
Disregard for the environment is pervasive in Dominica, people always talk about how Dominica has maintained a pristine environment however people have now began to take it for-granted.
KFC boxes and cups is the flower of choice now …

The whole of Portsmouth is dirty. By the the Benjamins Park is unsightly. I went up to Te Bay beach over the weekend and i was very shocked at what I saw, people have been throwing old TV, stove ect right on the beach. Someone needs to look into that and stop people from throwing there garbage there.
Portsmout people also need to store their garbage porperly. But we do need help in getting all that garbage off the streets.

We need to take responsibility of ourselves, our environment and stop blaming anyone.

Residents must have a sense of cleanliness, some of them just don’t care, they feel as soon as their stuff becomes garbage then they are no longer responsible for it, we must have a positive attitude and try to keep our communities clean. We must first start at home, then to the schools.

It’s really in poor taste that the second town does not have its own garbage truck and secondly its really a pain having to transport garbage from Portsmouth all the way to the landfill in Roseau. The authorities concerned should look into having a landfill around the Portsmouth Area, probably some residents would do their own garbage disposal rather to wait on DSW who is presumably over burdened.

Lets all help to make our country Clean and Green.

Not only Portsmouth has garbage problems my friend. Where I live in DCA we are told to expect garbage collection every 3rd week. We put out our garbage after 3 weeks & sometimes it sits there for another week.
Taking garbage to THE NEXT LEVEL.

Everybody can help if each person does their part to reduce the amount of waste they create, and how they dispose of it. Sadly most people do not care at all, then they just sit by and blame the government…
