Give district committees a chance to organize football

Letters_20to_20Editor_380419663Dear Mr. Editor

In light of the suggestion made by visiting former Trinidad and Manchester United player Dwight Yorke, who was campaigning in Dominica with FIFA Presidential Candidate recently, that too many competitions were organized by the D.F.A and the focus should be on quality rather than quantity,  I provide contents of part of a proposal submitted to the DFA dated March 18 2009 in my capacity as Secretary of the South East Sports Committee for which no response was received.

What our request was suggesting at the time was to allow the district committee to organize football at the district level from U19 up to District Level and the DFA allow us to select representative teams to participate in the other leagues it ran i.e. first division and intermediate thus reducing the number of teams participating individually in its leagues.  We already had a district team in the Premier Division.

Imagine if the suggestion was taken on board and probably even extended to other districts, Dwight Yorke and FIFA Presidential Candidate Giani Infantino, would have given the DFA thumbs up for initiating true development of football in Dominica.

That’s an extract from the letter.

“For the past twelve years the South East Sports Committee has been organizing football for the District – in the earlier years from Marigot to Delices but more recently from Castle Bruce/San Sauveur to Delices.  Petite Savanne has also been involved in some leagues in the past.

Last year, for example, ten (10) teams participated in the league.  Good San (including players from Castle Bruce, Good Hope and San Sauveur (1 team) Grand Fond (2) Riviere Cyrique (1) Morne Jaune (1) La Plaine (3); Boetica (1) and Delices (1).  Four of these teams are presently participating in the DFA All island league.  This poses a significant drain on the financial resources of the clubs, teams and individuals.

We are of the opinion that football is extremely popular in those communities and with proper management and incentives, significant results can be derived from that section of the community and hopefully nationally.

Collaboration could be done as follows:

  1. The DFA recognizes and sanctions the Eastern Football League to be administered by the South East Sports Committee. The committee and the DFA can work to receive sponsorship.
  2. The Committee will be responsible for mobilizing the work on the ground and the DFA will provide relevant assistance
  3. The committee/DFA to encourage the league to be played in as many suitable fields as possible, to encourage community participation.
  4. The DFA to assist with the training of referees and officials.
  5. The Disciplinary decisions taken by the committee will be supported by the DFA.
  6. A formula to be worked out to allow district teams to participate in the Leagues of the DFA.
  7. The committee to decide on a structure that will enable player mobility to the South East Premier Team.

We believe if sufficient sensitization is undertaken, the arrangement can be in place before the next season and we are confident that this will assist the DFA in its football development program.

We are looking forward to a positive, working relationship with the DFA to facilitate this development.”

I long to see the day when many of us will aspire to initiate quality development in the Nature Isle where the majority will be the beneficiaries.  Now that Mr. Dwight Yorke has made the exact suggestion using different words, I wish the D.F.A.  backtracks and mobilizes its resources to reactivate that concept to fast forward the development.  I am sure if Mr. Infantino wins the presidency, a Development Plan using “Dwight Yorke’s” concept would be one of the proposals that would get a positive response for the new development of football in Dominica and Caribbean Region.

Mr. Editor, I await to see what the D.F.A. does in that respect.
