LETTER: In-vitro fertilization is an evil

I wish to express my disappointment with  the awarding of the Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine to Dr. Robert Edwards, a pioneer of in vitro fertilization.

In-vitro fertilization is an evil – not a good –  that has been unleashed upon mankind.

IVF is an artificial method of reproduction in which human embryos are produced in a laboratory where they are observed and manipulated. Here, a relationship of domination of researchers over their embryonic subjects exists which not only opens the door to new threats against life but is contrary to the dignity and equality that must be common to parents and children.

Science is in fact now discovering that the process of IVF can cause genetic defects which negatively alter the basic genetic constitution of the person and all of his or her future offspring.

In addition, when an IVF baby is born, the child will never grow to know how many of his or her siblings or other embryos, were created and murdered in the development of the procedure. Since the birth of the first IVF child over thirty years ago, well over two million embryos have been discarded, or frozen, or selectively aborted, or miscarried or used in destructive experiments. We would all do well to remember that we too were once human embryos.

Human beings are not raw materials to be exploited or commodities that can be bought and sold. To suggest otherwise is to endorse a macabre interpretation of progress. Pure and simple IVF is nothing more than Frankenstein science.

Sincerely,
Paul Kokoski

I am 32 and have alwways wanted children but unfortunately i had to have both my ovaries removed due to a medical condition but the need and want to be a mother has never left and dont think will ever go away. I have an egg donor and a boyfriend who willing and loves me enough to go through this process with me, If i had a choice i would have my child naturally to be genetically mine but that is now impossible. but i know if we are ever succesful with ivf egg donation i would love this child cos it will be mine, the baby will be growing in me, bathing in my hormones drinking my milk. I have no doubt that this baby will be loved and cared for as if gentically mine. Its only science that says its not mine. I am just greatful to be born in an era where there is still a chance for me to be a mother, to carry, give birth etc..I know i am not evil to do this and if I am you ask our child when he/she older (if we are succesful)if i was evil or if i loved him/her as much as any mum can..

It’s all well and wonderful when you are able to have children the natural way. However, for many women, it’s not that easy. A man can never understand that maternal need; he can never understand the sound of that biological clock that only a woman can hear.
I thank the writer for his OPINIONS on invitro, however, many of us women out there are VERY THANKFUL for invitro. Without it, we would never have been able to experience the joys of motherhood. But again, he wouldn’t understand.

It should be about a soul and being God’s creation instead of man’s creation.

You should of sought God instead of taking Him out of the equation….my personal opinion and you will be judged by God for this.

      Repent.

    @Dominican Lover:

First of all I do not care too much about what Paul Kokoski has to say. But can we please stick to the thesis of the news article in question?

I was a teacher in Dominica, so I had to study the History of Dominica and that of the West Indies, but I am sure that the Christopher with the last name you used is incorrect. Also, I never learned any of that History of the West Indies from the Church’s Sunday Missal–I was in the Catholic Church as well–and it is definitely not from the Bible, which I study on a daily basis. Where did you get that information, and the last name of the Christopher that you mentioned?

However I did learn from History books at the time, that Christopher Columbus, from Spain discovered Dominica, the other islands of the West, and in fact the whole continent of America. But what does all of this have to with what Paul Kokoski wrote in the above article.?

@Truth, Justice and Peace: I am a Christian, the ironic thing is that I do believe that science is playing God..

Is it wrong or right, is left up to what we believe…

As women the majority of us want to experience child birth…but, who am I to condem the women who wants this by any means…But, at the sametime I have to question, God gave them these gifted hands to perform such things and they are using it to re-populate the world…

Alot of naturally concieved babies are deformed, sick, mis-carried…

This world is no longer in its original form. We keep changing and leave behind old customs and beliefs

@IVF Mammy!: In no way did I ever bash DNO, my mind is broader than alot of other comments that you have posted on this site… Comments posted before mines are clearly bashing DNO and yet nothing has been said about it..

The issue at hand is beyond the topic…your taking offense to something that is my opion, yet you claim I am thinking inside the box…

But yet, if you thought it was something that you did not agree with, and did not respect someone elses opinion you should not accept it…

Now your singling me out to prove something I am sure you will soon address

Never judge another. Never hate and criticize their faith. What you do not want for yourself, do not do it to others – The Golden Rule.
You and I possess different teachings. We also possess different intelligence to comprehend the truth of the matter. Your intelligence and your words are not better or higher than mine. Therefore, hold your peace for the love of Our Lord Jesus Christ and for the love of a fellow person.

    Learning Christ

Teach me, my Lord to be sweet and gentle, in all the events of life…
    in disappointments,
    in the thoughtlessness of others
in the insincerity of those I trusted,
in the unfaithfulness of those on whom I relied on
    Let me put myself aside
to think of the happiness of others,
to hide my little pains and heartaches,
so that I may be the only one to suffer from them.
Teach me to profit by the suffering that comes across my path,
Let me so use it that it may mellow me,
    not harden nor embitter me;
that it may make me patient, not irritable,
that it may make me broad in my forgiveness,
    not narrow, haughty and overbearing.

As I go my rounds from one distraction to another, let me often whisper a word of love to Thee. May my life be lived in the supernatural, full of power for good, and strong in its purpose of sanctity.
    Amen!

    @Reader:

The Catholic Church is not an organization. If you call it an organization, you can also say the same about the thousands other churches that were formed after the Catholic Church was established. They, too, are an organization. They are by no means superior to the Catholic Church. They are not at par and can never surpass it. God has ordained and arranged this until the end of time. What God has joined together, let no man/woman put asunder – no power; no strength.
The Catholic Church does not operate an organization. I have stated this and this is the way it is. You can keep arguing about it but you cannot change what I know about my very own Catholic Church. God knows better than you do. You have much to learn and comprehend.

    Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace!
Where there is hatred let me sow love
    Where there is injury, pardon
    Where there is doubt, faith.
    Where there is despair, hope
    Where there is darkness, light
    Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console
To be understood as to understand
To be loved as to love, for
It is in giving that we receive
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

The finality of it all is that we will then receive our judgment according to our words, our attitude and works on this earth.

    @Dominican Lover:

Free to agree and disagree. Everyone has some degree of intelligence and basic common sense. There are those who possess more than others. As a hopefully matured person when you read an article, your reserve the right to form your own opinion and respond according to your mentality but do so with love and kindness.
God gave us a free mind and will, a mind of our own. Obviously, people will not always agree on certain matters more often than not. This could result in disagreements and animosity. There is no need to downplay and downgrade their intelligent article which came from an intelligent mind and to make uncomplimentary remarks about his article.
There are millions of people who will utilize their intelligence, who recognizes the sense of what he wrote and who will agree with what Paul Kokoski. He is not a foolish person.
We are by no means senseless people. We contemplate on what we read, draw our opinions and come to our conclusion. It is to be expected that our conclusion, opinion and responses may not reflect yours and vice versa.
You are attacking the Catholic Church. What is your reason for doing this? Where does the Dogma of the Catholic Church come in? Do you know what Dogma means? I suggest that you look it up in the dictionary or Thesaurus.
Invitro fertilization is not a Dogma of the Catholic Church. It never was and never will be. Please leave the Catholic Church out of it.
The teaching of the Catholic Church is based on what is contained in Holy Scriptures and “Its religious teaching.” The latter St. Paul stated is also in Holy Scriptures if you only look for it. As much as I have a lot to state on this matter and would love to, I will not state any more.
I will simply state that those who hate the Catholic Church and persecute it will one day be paid back and two-fold by God Himself. Mark my words for as long as you live.
These so-called experts are using baby parts for their researches. They claim they can assist women who are infertile. I would not trust them.
You reside in Dominica. There is a lot you may never hear about the results of this Invitro fertilzation whether it is successful or not and how it affects women including if any died during this process and if the children were born normal and did not develop abnormalities.
Please put on your thinking cap and ask God for enlightenment in this matter.
As for those who want babies, it is their life and their responsibility. If they want babies they will have to bear the consequences of their actions. Whatever they have done and in whatever manner, they will have to answer to God for it. Therefore, do not blame the Catholic Church for their actions and your indifferent attitude.

Furthermore, I based my argument on his poor literary skills and diplomacy. I haven’t even begun to attack his logic, as you have attacked mine with your anonymous, one-sentence comment. Religious dogma, will always seek to discredit science, as science exposes the lies the Catholic Church and others have used to instil fear and prejudice against intelligence.
Mr. Kokoski, you are entitled to your position but please do not attempt to continue to mislead the people of Dominica with your religious bigotry.
What are you doing to help the women who get pregnant in poverty and the children born of poverty who live their lives in poverty and neglect. Why does the church not spend some of its immence stolen wealth to help these children.
Remember Mr. Koskoski Jesus said do not be a false witness, of the seven thing God hate a false witness is one that the Lord finds an abomination Proverbs 21. Stop the propaganda Dominicans had enough of your false hood remember Christopher Killthembus, the church taught us he discovered the West- Indies, when in fact the Natives saved his sorry ass. @Truth, Justice and Peace:

It is amazing how the truth can be twisted by religious fanaticism as a means to propagate religious beliefs, which is very dangerous and deceptive. You were quick to portray Dr. Morgentaler as an evil Person not revealing the true facts, just because it suits your religious beliefs to demonize someone. That is the same method used by Paul Kokoski, twisting the truth with lies and inaccuracy to prove his religious beliefs, you to are following the same path. indeed. If you have a religious belief, and want to express how devoted you are to your beliefs, why is it you need to twist information and demonize someone to support what you believe, this is very dangerous and not portraying the the nature of God, which you so aspire to worship and devote, sometimes it begs to ask what God you all profess to worship.

You are behaving like this either because of religious Indoctrination, or ignorance. if you believe in something because of your religious beliefs, which you are entitled to, that does not give you the right to make other people believe or follow you, or even worse wanting to have Laws made to support your beliefs and more extreme making death threats as in the case of what Dr
Morgentaler went through his whole life. You made mention to “Frankenstien science”.and how soon scientist will turn out a Frankenstein and/or a Dracula, Have you not looked around the world and see what religion has created and manifested, stealing peoples minds, robbing them of their true nature, and the dumbing down of people, creating wars and intolerance, just look at your case with your tunnel vision, before you can start to judge other people for their actions base on you religious beliefs, why don’t you examine your self first, look within, the truth is not in religious dogma, and neither can it be found with a closed mind. i will leave with this “A man’s moral worth is not measured by what his religious beliefs are but rather by what emotional impulses he has received from Nature during his lifetime” Albert Einstein.

Well according to his arguement, women on a whole are evil. How many women are in the world? Every month at least 2 million women pass out an unfertilized egg which basically goes to waste. Are you saying that once our eggs are not fertilized that we women are not thinking that we were once human embryos? Think about that…………..

The same thing can be said of the clothes you wear
    the food you eat
    the medication you take
and all the state of the art equipment you utilize especially the computer and the internet

Men used to be murdered for claiming the world was round but oh how we enjoy all the “results” of science over the years and I’m sure you even carry a cell phone and use it quite frequently…

I understand your point however do you realize how many eggs a woman actually has and how many actually get utilized for childbirth? some women never even have kids

This research can help cancel out all the “birth” defect we face today, erase mental defects, bone defects, give kids stronger immune systems etc etc but until the research is complete and done it will simply remain as “EVIL” by all those who stand against advancement

I wonder why these people don’t go running around naked like they were in the garden of eden

The olny evil I see here is Kokoski himself who would presumably deny the millions of children born through IVF a chance at life through his preposterous arguments. We are warned to beware of false prophets in the last days . But they are easy to spot. Those who would continue to deny relief and comfort from afflictions like infertility through the advancement of God given knowledge can only be agents of Satan himself. By their fruits, as they say , we shall know them.

    @Mammie:

What are you talking about? Science has been here longer than organized religion? What science? You must be joking.
Are you a Christian? Practicing Christians will never refer to the Christian religion as organized religion.
And what type of religion are you referring to? There is no such thing as organized religion. The Church is not an organization and it is not operating an organization.
Are you are aware that God is not operating an organization but a Kingdom? This is what The Church is striving for with Its members, the Heavenly Kingdom. We are The Church; we make up The Church as members of The Church.
I recall this hymn when I was a child:

    Loyal and True

Loyal and true to Christ the King,
Armed with the faith, our youth we bring
As crusaders of old; we His reign uphold,
And men His glory shall see,
In the lead His Cross rides high,
    Flaming gold against the sky;
Oh, who can withstand where love holds command
    And weapon his charity.
No craven souls in our ranks shall bide.
Only the brave with the King may ride,
    For the struggle is long,
    And the foe is strong
And faint hearts fall by the way,
He who died to make us free,
    Leads us on to victory,
    And the conquest is sure
    To those who ensure,
And heaven is won for aye.

    Mr. Paul Kokoski:

I have read your interesting writings on this Website and commend you for them. I do agree with you about this in vitro-fertilization.
I understood that you reside in Toronto. So do I. This weekend we are celebrating Thanksgiving, tomorrow, Monday being the holiday. May I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving Day.
We have a lot to be thankful to God for. This includes the unusual beautiful, sunny, mild weather we are experiencing this weekend. I recall such weather in the Fall – Autumn – used to be called “Indian Summer.” It is a long time I have not heard those words.
We thank God for his blessings and graces and everything else which He has bestowed on us. God is good!
Recall shockingly that Dr. Morgentaler, the abortionist who, through the years aborted thousands of babies in their mothers’ wombs and was imprisoned in Canada for his evil works received the Order of Canada.
He had an abortion clinic – mill in Toronto and set up such clinics in other parts of Canada. He was consistently defying the Canadian government, wicked and bold man that he is.
This man was and still is out to destroy Canada’s unborn babies, its future adults and citizens. The government should have let him languish in prison for doing so for he is a mass murderer.
It was stated that he helped women. In what way? He helped to eradicate future babies, children and adults from the Canadian society, preventing those babies from being born. Mortgentaler has no respect for life. Yet, he has life and is still living and treasures his life.
You will also recall the anger by those of us who objected to him receiving this highest Order, through the Media.
He had an abortion clinic – mill – in Toronto. He got so much pressure in Toronto that he went to reside in one of the Eastern provinces.
I attended a few Holy Masses and processions for Defending the Unborn. Once a month, The Right to Life organized a Holy Mass which was held at St. Michael’s Cathedral. Then the congregation went in silent procession to a park, with police escort, in an area which was facing Mortgentaler’s abortion mill across the street. There, we prayed the Holy Rosary and said some prayers loud enough and also sang and then returned to the Church.
In the end, he could not stand the heat. Those Holy Masses, Holy Rosaries, processions and other prayers were effective in getting him out of Toronto without touching him.
Some of those who received this Order for their good works returned them in protest.
Kill the unborn, prevent them from being born. Use their bodies, etc. and receive a citation as being such a good person. Oh my! Not so in the eyes of God. This is an abomination unto the Lord!
There are some people who have it all wrong. Those who deserve this recognition are not awarded same.
Today another scourge is also in vitro fertilization. This is another abomination. Women are being deceived by those so called experts/researchers who are experimenting on them. May they not produce malformed children. Only then will they cry “foul” and complain to government authorities about the deceit and errors of those researchers and doctors. Then sue them for millions of dollars. Let us wait and see.
I read with interest that you mentioned “Frankenstien science”. I must state that this is strange you stated that. Why? Because during a course of relevant conversation I informed someone that one day they will produce a Frankenstein and/or a Dracula which will be God’s punishment.
Our patient God is taking good note. As we pray for an end to these evil deeds. Our consolation is, the day will come when they will receive their fair and just recompense and be repaid according to their evil works.
Worship, prayer, penance, sacrifice as a means of restitution and love, respect for all and according others their due rights and dignity, as also the unborn in their mothers’ wombs, their right to life. Only these good works will appease our God.
    God bless you!

Some religions do not believe in oral contraceptives, some do. My point is not everyone agrees. You’re an IVF mommy? Great! Mr. Paul I think you are being too selfish. Before your write this utter rubbish think of the millions of women whose only hope lies in ivf. God didnt make the world so that it may remain unprogressive and unresponsive. The persons who perform this is gifted from God.

To you Waitukubuli even the bible says that nothing is new under the sun. Think of Abraham and Sarah who waited over a hundred years for their first biological child, when he couldnt have one firstly with his wife, she gave him her maid. now tell me which woman in this day and age will give her man to another woman to lie with to produce children.. And just so that you may know we can no longer wait till we are 100 years to produce.

Stop being selfish sir, this maybe be the last ditch effort for a woman to have piece of mind

Of all the dumb things I’ve heard in my life, this has to be the worst.

Firstly, how can I take you seriously when you make statements such as, “evil – not a good -“? Hi, everyone knows that good is the opposite of evil. And for a grammatical construct like this to have any impact, you need to use big words. Please leave your kindergarten English at home and do not poison the Dominican youth with the rubbish you call literature.

Secondly, there are numerous spacing and punctuation errors. Take time to review things before you publish them, especially if you’re attempting to launch an attack as foolish as this. For example, “Pure and simple {INSERT COMMA HERE PLEASE} IVF”.

Thirdly, “contrary to the dignity and equality that must be common to parents and children” makes absolutely no sense. And I cannot see how this relates to IVF at all. If anyone can, please elaborate for me.

Fourthly, quote your source in paragraph four. It is illegal to not give credit where it is deserved. The same goes for your article illustration. You also make extremely bold accusations in paragraph five so please quote. I especially want to learn more about these “destructive experiments”. And yes, we were all “human embyros” at some point. Not monkey. Not pig. Not platypus. Even you, Paul, were a human embryo.

I’m not sure if you’ll be offended because of my comment or thrilled that a student of Cornell University has spent time critically analyzing your letter. I sincerely hope that I’ve enlightened you. And if I have gone against the DominicaNewsOnline posting policy in any way, shape, or form, I apologize. I would even invite DNO to allow me to post a rebutal letter.

I believe it is absolutely ridiculous to make such an ignorant comment. Only people who have not had not gone through the challenges of infertility can make such an ignorant comment. For a lot of couples who are unable to get pregnant or carry a child to full term, this is the only opportunity. I’m sure if they could conceive through traditionl methods they would not select this option. Unless you are in this position you have no right to judge.
I am a dominican woman living in the US and currently going through this process and I am not ashamed of it. If I am able to bring life out of this process my child will be loved by my husband(dominican man) and myself just the same as if they were conceived naturally.
Infertility is a medical condition such as many other diagnosed illness which benefits from scientific intervention. If someone has cancer and treatment is available you would treat it right? So why not this illness. What makes it evil?
If you are looking at people who manipulate the process and implant themselves with a large number of embryoes then that is based on a lack of good judgement from that individual and the treating phyisican. Someone who has not experienced the pain and heartbreak of not being able to conceive should not condem others who choose an alternative option to achieving this dream.
Only uneducated persons with no knowledge of the subject can make such statements.

And your “God created man in his own image and likeness;” have you ever ask yourself what the hell that was? There are a lot of hidden clues in your Bible, but you people don’t have the freedom to think independently because some religion is pulling your strings.

I agree, Paul. “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you” says almighty God. Yet, dumb beings have diverse views on when life begins. Yet, these same people who advocate for these are the ones who are quick to condemn all murderers. I like the fact that you remind people that they too were embryos. Truly, the “wisdom of the world is foolishness with God”.
