Little help for Dominican athlete making his country proud

Dear Editor: I am forced to write this because in this lovely country of our Dominica the poor will always remain poor and the rich will always remain rich. I say that in light of Mr. Thomas who most of us know as Jr, a long and uprising man from the small community of Loubiere.

Many will know him as the guy who is a people’s person, a very helpful individual who will assist anyone who is in need.

Some who know him well will recall that he has been involved in athletics and has ran 100 to 200 metre races in and out of Dominica and he has represented well.

Two weeks ago he left Dominica, very sadly to participate in three races in Trinidad and Tobago, with little help from the Government of Dominica and from Verk-Vers internet cafe. He sought assistance from many business places and even the Olympic Committee here and got no assistance, mainly because as he was told he is not a national player.

On Saturday, March 20 he ran the first leg of the race, which is the 100 meters and came third with a bronze medal. On  Sunday, March 21 he participated in the 200 meters race in Trinidad, and last week was expected to run another 100 and 200 meters in Tobago.

Jr. has indeed made us proud by placing third on March 21 at Trinidad. So for all those who denied him help he has made not only himself proud, but Dominica proud.

He still needs help and I am asking the business places to come forward in helping his young man.

He can be reached at 1-868-7831808.

Don’t Jr. remember the toughest part of the race is in the last few meters to the finishline.
Keep training wisely though the all the challenges u face there is always light on the other-
side of the tunnel. Keep going my friend and athlete!

Jr. keep ur head up partner and don’t allow negative talk bring u down. As a former athlete and patriot of Dominica Athletics I know how u feel. Success always comes with a price tag to it so persevere my boy and keep knowledgeable ppl such as coaches, mentors resource agents close. Harris contribution is still present even with his absence many athletes are still being help by him in many ways. Keep striving for excellence and find ppl who can lift u up. And finally, remember how u act is the way ppl wil react to u!

what the result have to do with supporting the man? are youone of the haters? is not who win, or place is who participate that what give the country the recognition.
why all these big firms in da mostly like to support sewo andthe likes.and the humble individuals get snob.then when they are successful every body want to come onboard.
Jr. is so it stay in da.just stay on the track and don’t look back, forget the hard hearters.
TRUST IN THE MOST HIGH AND NEVER GIVE UP. keep on working and have hope one day you will hit the top.Dominica too d&%#m small for this kind of s*&t to go so often. it seems in da is not who you know, but who know you, that get you through. take the carnival queen for instance. no firm sponsered her because nobody knew her now they all want to embrace her.

i saw the results of that race and Juniors name was not among the top three. i am left to wonder whether it was the result of the Heat he participated in that he is referring to. In any case one does not receive medals for Heats. I hope he is not reporting a dream. Please contact members of the Dominica Amateur Athletics Association for the real results.

    Wallow.

Junior, You should be aware that the Olympic Committee and Athletic association’s resources are to be used judiciously. An athlete cannot request financial assistance from the committee outside of his national association. Junior you have been an active athlete, but you have to accept that you have not qualified for any national teams and thus it has been difficult for the national association to fund your travel, etc. If I can recall, you belong to a local club “The Olympians”. You should request your club’s support to the games. It is difficult to get local business support for athletes who have qualified for games, you should realize as an athletes that it takes a whole lot to get sponsorship from business places. I wish you luck in your endeavour.

What BS is that!!!!! DA is such a darn small island with a few athletes! As far as I gather, this dude has shown the dedication and has taken the initiative to pay his own passage and seek races out of island and not even the sports division can help this guy?

I do not want to judge wihout all the information, but did he write petitions, reach out to the correct people through the proper channels?

If all this was done and he still did not receive any help, well then JR, promote yourself and to hell with them!

I am saddened by this he was refuses because he is not a national player. Nonsense he is more than national he is right now in Trinidad representing whom himself or Dominica. Shame shame shame. This is why the young people are not motivated they have no support where it is necessary. For sure I will be looking for this young man myself when I come home to DA. He is from my village. And I am proud.

It is a shame when an individual needs help and no one reaches out to assist him. Mayt times those with dreams cannot fulfill them when we don’t reach out and lend a hand. Dreams are conceived and fulfilled when there is perseverance. Taht’s exactly what this young man has done. Inspite of the resistance that he was faced with, he did not let that dete rhim. Instead he thrusted forward and won third place. Was his attainment publicised? Maybe not. Let’s not be a selfish nation but rather encourage those with dreams and help them to make their dreams come to fruition.
