Media reports of church sex abuse scandal unjust

Dear Editor: Attempts to undermine the Catholic Church by the media and others regarding the recent sex-scandal is wrong and unjust to the vast majority by innocent priests, who are faithful to their vows.

While the scandal is sickening and disheartening it must be put in its proper perspective. First, the Catholic Church is the only church that can be traced directly back to Christ.

Second, a very small percentage of priests are actually sex-abusers. Statistics show that within the general population, priests are among those least likely to be abusers i.e. 80 to 90 percent of the cases happen in families. Even Jesus had his Judas.

Third, people should bear in mind that priests have to respect the special nature of secrecy involved in the act of confession which was entrusted to the church by Christ.

Finally, the word “abuse” has been misinterpreted and exaggerated to include acts that were considered normal and harmless forms of discipline only a short time ago. No doubt what society needs today is more discipline – not less.

The Church will weather this storm as She has weathered every other storm and come out victorious. Rather than condemn the church for the sins of a few, people should be climbing aboard the barque of Peter for it will be their only safe haven in these troubling times.

Sincerely,
– Paul Kokoski

Alot of these accusations are motivated by greed and that recession that is hitting
everyone. Some have always targeted the Catholic church because they say the church has alot of money and gold stemming from the Roman empire. This is the
main reason for all this lawsuits going around.
If in reality these abuses took place the offenders should be severely punished.
If it didn’t happen and can be proven, i think those accusers should also be punished.
Remember God sees and knows everything and one of these days we have to give account for all our wrong doings.

The problem is that many closet homosexuals join the priesthood under the disguise of celibacy. A gaydar would go off on most of the young men who decide to become priests. They somehow believe when they hide behind priesthood their sexuality will not be questioned and once in the position they get tempted by the little boys parading in front them in the church. That’s all there is to it. ALL THE PRIEST WHO ABUSE LITTLE BOYS ARE GAY! so the problem really is GAY priest joining priesthood for cover. Homosexuality is the Abomination of abomination, and its manifestation in the catholic church is through those said ‘priests’. Voila!

I was thinking something very similar to you. So if a man doesn’t get sex is a child he will molest? I was thinking that the people had their problems, disorder or whatever you want to call it even before joining the priesthood…

    Hi Hey…….

    Who killed Jesus?

Why did the 300,000 denomination left the R.C?

Why did the priests use to take away bibles given to catholics by other protestants?

Why when a child attends a protestant crusade they are punished by not having them to make

    first communion/ conformation?

Dubiqois I agreed with most of your contribution.

The R.C could have been a first church but not the first church of the JESUS they are talking about.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church is older than all these European churches. Check the history for your- selves. Paul Kokoski is distorting history.

The Jews from Ethiopia is the oldest Jewish community as well. It is impossible for any church in Europe to be older than anything of that sort in that part of the world[Ancient Egypt/North Africa] because the current of civilisation flowed from the ancient world[Ancient Africa] to Europe not the other way around.

It is impossible for branches of a tree to be older than the roots, and Ancient Africa is the root.

Historic fact is that Orthodox Christian church is the original church that leads to Christ. Catholic church broke off from One Holy Apostolic church in 1054. Catholic church has continued to distance itself from Christ’s teachings through its actions. Of course there are many individuals in the RC who love God just as in the original Orthodox church. But the pedofiles and sexual preditors priests should be prosecuted just as any criminal and permanently removed from the clergy. It is that the church was covering up those criminals that makes it so scandalous, and it is rightfully so. There is a lot of house cleaning that must be done.

I sympathize with all the catholics out there. It is always disappointing to see something that you have held in such high regards for all your life reveals its cracks, fault lines, and blemishes.

I do not belong to any denomination. I am for what is just and right. What is just is that the catholic church and the pope put the right mechanisms in place to ensure that innocent lives are not scared by those who took a sacred vow to be christ-like. If what is happening to your church serves as a catalyst that forces the pope to take remedial steps to fix the wound that has festered for many years, then I happy. You all cannot continue to hide yourselves under a calabash while innocent children are being scared by your leaders. I will not be quiet when such crimes are being committed against children.

Hopefully, when you come out at the other end of the tunnel, your church will be cleaner and healthier.

As I said before, you need to read about the actual things the catholic church has done. Stop hiding your head in the bible – god hates hypocrites – particularly those who pray to him and condone the violation of the innocent.

Do you know anything about the Chair of St. Peter? Are u going to mislead people with your fancy words? The Priests have to answer to God…. So will you for your Mischief against the church.

I am merely speaking based on factual and statistical things things the church has done. I am committing no mischief against your church. I am merely stating facts…facts that your leader (the pope) has substantiated. In this case, I am the voice of the innocent, and I will continue to speak against such crimes. Do not get angry at me. I think you are angry at me for intellectualizing factual misdeeds by your church.

You should be angry at your church…………..not me. My conscience is as clear as day, but I do not think the same can be said about some of your religious leaders.

I know! I know! It is difficult for you to digest, because you grew up in the church, and you were indoctrinated by its principles and dogma.

IF THE “INFALLIBLE” POPE APOLOGIZES, THAT MEANS THAT HE DEFINITELY KNOWS THAT THE ABUSES ARE NOT ISOLATED INCIDENCES, BUT ARE RATHER PREVALENT IN CHURCHES AROUND THE WORLD.

WE, AS ADULTS, ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THE PROTECTOR OF THE INNOCENT. THERE IS NONE MORE INNOCENT THAN CHILDREN.

AGAIN, PAUL’S LETTER IS DISJOINTED, BASELESS, AND MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE. HIS WRITING IS ALL OVER THE PLACE – WHICH INDICATES THAT HIS MEDULLA OBLONGATA IS DISFUNCTIONAL.

PAUL SAYS, “First, the Catholic Church is the only church that can be traced directly back to Christ.” WHAT ON EARTH DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH PRIESTS ABUSING CHILDREN?

PAUL SAYS, “Third, people should bear in mind that priests have to respect the special nature of secrecy involved in the act of confession which was entrusted to the church by Christ” AGAIN, WHAT ON EARTH DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH PRIEST ABUSING CHILDREN?

PAUL SAYS, “Finally, the word “abuse” has been misinterpreted and exaggerated to include acts that were considered normal and harmless forms of discipline only a short time ago” IS PAUL SAYING THAT MOLESTATION AND SEXUAL ABUSE WAS CONSIDERED NORMAL AND HARMLESS FORMS OF DISCIPLINE IN THE PAST, AND WE SHOULD CONTINUE TO LIVE IN THE NEOLITHIC AGE?

I AM WAITING FOR YOUR RESPONSE, PAUL. YOUR THERAPY SESSION CANNOT BE THAT LONG.

Interesting comments: No one says that the actions of the priest were right. My God…. they are wrong and as the Pope said….. they have to answer for their actions.

You all are quick to say what the Church has done wrong in 2000 years…. please talk about the Great actions that changed or impacted the World we live in.

These wicked Priest will answer to God but there is a bigger picture. U cannot allow a few to destroy the church….. and yes…. the One Holy True and Apostolic Catholic Church.

No one talks about the the Church saving Nations at a time….but quick to condemn a whole church for a few Priest. Common people.

My fellow Catholics…. do not stress too much…. the Apostles turned their back on Jesus and still that did not stop the movement of the church.

However…. we need to pray that God will heal victims and forgive the wicked Priest… just as he forgave the prostitute in the Gospel last sunday.

ONE OF THE REQUISTES IS THAT HE HAS TO BE THE HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE!! SO ALL THIS COULD BE AVOIDED IF THE PRIESTS WERE ALLOWED TO MARRY..THE POPE CAME OUT WITH A LETTER CONDEMING THE ABUSES BUT THAT LEFT AN EVEN MORE BITTER TAST IN THE MOUTH OF THE IRISH! THE CHURCH IS CORRUPT AND ALWAYS COVERING UP…BENEDICT WAS A YOUNG NAZI,YOU NEVER SEE THE MAN EYES?! 16. SERIOUSLY!
    March 22, 2010

Mr. Paul, I respect every one’s opinion and I hope you respect mine. It is not unfair to expose any wrong doing especially when it applies to out faith. For centuries, priests and other religious leaders had betrayed our trust and you spoke of Judas; the bible exposed Judas. What do you want from us? Do you want us to hide it and ignore it? Do you want it to continue and then we have a society full of emotionally scarred victims, afraid to speak of their abuse and afraid to confront their abusers.

My wish is that every abuser be exposed. Priests take a vow. They vow to protect not to destroy and damage. I am an adult, I can take care of myself. What about my children who go to catechism?

This is not an attack of the church. This is to protect our society. Over the years the catholic church has used its money to bounce back. This is not the solution. The perpetrators need to be exposed. Any criminal needs to be exposed. No one should be allowed to hide behind church cloth. Not pastor, priest or rabbi.

Now, think well, is this really what you wanted to write?

How ironic it is to blame the media for underminiung the catholic church when it is that institution itself that is the cause of such damaging publicity. It are not the media who stand accused of these horrendous deeds but the clergy of this church, an institution that is loath to submit itself to secular law and insists on being its own adjudicator, inevitably leading to secret “cameras” and so allow such misdeeds to perpetuate, all for the sake of maintaining a public image free of blemish. As preachers of christian morals they should be far more concerned with the suffering endured by the victims. Yet, there is hope that this “outing” will sanitize this venerable institution and may lead to the disbandonment of societies composed of men only, or women for that matter. Surely, for the church to proclaim homosexuality to be unnatural and immoral, yet impose celibacy on its clergy does not make sense. I wish them well and trust recompense, acknowlegement of wrongdoing and the necessary reformation are forthcoming.

DONT GET ME WRONG for I am not in any way tolerating the wrongs done by the Catholic Priest. However I find you all are the ones being bias. Lets face it:
    1. The Catholic church has a far bigger population than the others so its wrongs will be more visible
    2. I want some one to tell me is it only the Catholic Priest that are doing those wrong things?
what happend to the little girl that was molested in the …..? why is it tight lipped ……
what about the school kids that were abused by their married pastor in a church in ….. and as a result he was transferred why was it tight lipped
    3. What about the pastors who are married with kids and use there pastor role to do their crooked dealings??
    4. What about fathers who abuse their own kids and teachers who abuse their students?

Why when ever something happens in the Catholic church we are so quick to condemn when in truth and the fact it happens in the other churches and worse those pastors have their wives.

    What you all fail to realize those priest are humans and can fall. In all works of life; in all careers paths their are good and bad people meaning their are pedifiliars, child molesators, rapist, thiefs and the list goes on and on;

You all tend to behave as if the priest are not humans and can do no wrong yes they should know better but are humans so when they fall we have to let them pay their crime as normal humans and get help for them cause only sick people behave in those ways.

So stop judging the Catholic church. Paul K I support your letter to the editor.

I will stand up for my church, because I am not ashamed of it. I am ashamed of the acts of those who do wrong, but I am not ashamed of my church. Justice needs to be done, but it is no point trying to say that the Catholic church does not go back to St. Peter! So many pastors lie to their congregations about what catholics do in their church, to get them against the church. Maybe you should help them preach unity instead. When I was at Roseau Boys School in the 1970s there was a priest who use to come to the school to indoctrinate the students{he was called ‘father Gaylord’] some of you out there might remember him.

One day a boy, whom I will not name, came to school with his hair in an Afro style and the priest did not like it . The priest beat him with a whip and then send him out of the class to go and have his hair cut.
I think that priest was from Belgium.

Talking about Belgium, a Catholic country, their record in Africa, the atrocities against our African ancestors is so horrible words can’t describe. The king of Belgium at the time use to collect the hands of Africans who their army killed as punishment.

I am very interested in the history you refer too. How can I contact you? Let’s start from the day when the Catholic Church was instituted. Let’s go back to the first Pentecost.

Let’s start from the apostles denying Jesus…… Let’s start from Peter. Even Peter denying Jesus.

Dubiqois,,, are u saying that in the 2000 years history of the Church, everything would be perfect. Alot of harm was done,,, and that we all are angry about,,, but lets talk about the Good…. Shaping Society and bring salvation to all corners of the Earth. I really want to talk to you Dubiqois.

Jesus himself said,,, The Gates of Hell will never prevail against his Church. He meant it. For sure the gates of hell will come and work on weak human being.. but those gates will always be broken down… Remember,, Jesus said that.

Lets talk… create a blog DNO. Remember these few Priests are human. Furthermore,,, the only reason why you hear more about the Catholics is because it is easily targetted. So easy to point at Rome. Guess what,,, alot more happening all over and no one hears about it…… we all know that. Over 300,000 denominations were create by man and trust me,,, they have similar situations.

300 victims in Germany came forward in less than 3 months. It’s NOT a small percentage of priests that physically and sexually abuse girls, boys and vulnerable adults. The numbers you recount are only the ones that we know about! With all the secrecy in the catholic church, we really don’t know the true number of victims. Plus many were paid for their silence.

One day – soon I hope – the real truth will come out. It’s slowly coming out now. Thanks to victims who have had the courage to go public, the media to report, the civil and criminal reporting, fewer will be abused today. Prevention is due to victims, who are already hurting, coming forward. The church’s complicity in illegal activities is not only morally wrong, it’s disgusting and needs to end now.

I too was indoctrinated at one point in my life. Time to wake up and smell the coffee Paul.

Yeah right, so because the church goes back to Christ, priests should not be taken before the court?

we complain that the government is not, and truly, the government is not, but is the church above the law? Did christ give the church the right to secrecy when jesus was a very outspoken man about right or wrong?

What happen? Are priest excluded from Judgement Day? I would like to know. Stupse.

    Paul,

In the name of freedom of the press, expression and religion, you decided to write this letter.

You are kidding, right? To put it bluntly, your letter is bias, fragmented, and unhinged.

With all due respect, you need to revisit the history of the catholic church. Take yourself away from the pews, and conduct some factual research.

Obviously, you will start with the Great Commission. As you move forward, however, keep an unbiased mind as you try to untangle the history of the Catholic church, its canon laws, and its multitude of historical atrocities.

I know what has been unfolding is difficult for catholics to digest; however, the greater part of an iceberg lie beneath.

This is not a storm to be weathered, man. These are atrocities that need to be addressed and dismantled.

If you would like me to assist you with the history of the catholic church, I will gladly oblige. Just be careful what you wish for, however.

      Don’t forget:
The inquisition, enslavement of Africans also that present pope was actually a Nazi in the Hitler Youth Organization in the 1940s. The Catholic church has a history of crimes against innocent people all over the world throughout its history.

I don’t know who that Vatican Spin Doctor-apologist think he is fooling.

Guilty Priests must be brought to justice. The Pope has apologised to the people of Ireland recently for all the sex abuse, by priests, which happened there over the past few years.

When will Dominicans see justice done?

We are not interested in your apologies on behalf of the catholic church.

You are just making the situation worse sir.

So please stop insulting us with your creative definitions and twisted logic.

Abuse is abuse whoever dose it.

Stop covering up for abusive priests.

Catholic church is very corrupt. I read that even the current Pope was guilty of covering up for his nasty priests them when he was an arch-bishop in Germany. What a thing.

Can’t understand why the priests don’t recruit a nun secretly than sex down little boys
