Dear Editor: This letter is written to solicit comments re the legality and privacy aspect of one’s e-mail. I listened in amazement on a popular radio talk show on Thursday, August 5 where a ego-seeking, self acclaimed to fame and wanting the people to know journalist actually and unashamedly tread some e-mails not addressed to him, but from one prominent and distinguished lawyer to another re the electoral reform issue. Amazingly neither the host or any other caller viewed this as illegal or a breach of privacy.
The same host and that same ego-seeking journalist made no comment when the P.M’s speech to announce the general elections date was read on their radio station before its intended delivery time at a rally.
I am very concerned and perturbed at these occurrences which seems to be accepted as normal. Is that a reflection of desperate minds? Or is it accepted as political strategy by any means necessary?

A bit late in reading this. Interpol, CIA, CSIS of these countries, Canada, US and Europe now have access to emails and such information due to terrorists actions. They have requested it from the Providers who gave them the authority to do so. No kidding.
I had an experience. I was typing an email and as I looked at the left bottom of the screen I noticed the word “Interpol”. I was surprised and asked myself why is Interpol accessing my computer? There was a problem with terrorists at that time but not in Canada. I concluded that this was the reason and no doubt everyone who owned a computer and was sending emails, their system was accessed by Interpol. I did send an email about that to CNN and also my favorite local TV Station that I view the local news.
This includes tapping phone lines. We are no longer safe and protected. All this is due to terrorists actions.
Just do not write and say anything confidential which could incriminate you.
This is what it has come to in the era in which we are residing. This is how in those cases that criminals/terrorists are caught. Emails and telephones are excellent means of communicating and catching them because this is how some of them conduct their evil and shady business which destroy lives and properties.
Being a law-abiding person and others in my household, I have no objections to that. We need a safe environment, to live in happiness, dignity, peace and safety.
I usually make a joke and state, if they wish to infiltrate my computer to read my email messages and also tap my telephone line, I hope it will convert them to Christianity, or return to practicing the Christian faith and/or return to God. For they are used mainly for this purpose.
This is another reason “I do not conduct business over the Internet and also do not store confidential matters” on the computer system.
A saintly person said: “Speak more to God and less to people.” This means: “Bring our troubles to Him and pray to Him.” We cannot go wrong doing that even though we may not be appreciated or are persecuted.
As it is stated in Holy Scriptures, “All things work for good to those who love God.” And, “If God is for us who can be against us?” Amen!
Therefore, if the Dominican government infiltrates residents emails and taps their telephone lines, they better have a good reason and to prove it for doing that and not for their own curiosity and wickedness. Otherwise, yes, it could be charged and for an exorbitant sum of money.
There is also Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, United Nations and the World Court. Whichever is responsible for government taking advantage of citizens of any country, they should be accessed and utilized. Citizens should make good use of them if need be.
As I continue to reside in Canada I am learning more about those matters and organizations and their responsibilities. This is another advantage of residing in same and having a Canadian, US or European passport. Thanks be to God.
Do not deny your current Dominica Prime Minister of same and cause him to renounce the other passport. He may, one day, require it.
It is the obligation of citizens, in whatever country they reside, also with the help of their Lawyers, where applicable and necessary, to find out about those organizations. They are non-profit ones.

It is really sad that this is happening and nothing is being done to stop it. An example should have been made the night when the PM speech was read. There should have been an officer waiting out side the studio to arrest the young lady. Now which leaves me to ask, what are we hiding? What are we afraid of? Why isn’t the people who coverns this country put laws in place to deal with unfortunate happennings like these? My God where is the respect for people’s privacy? I support my PM but is very concerned but the zero action when it comes to stopping these emails from being read.

Very interesting and varied views,but PATRIOT i figure was concerned re the legality of the action and not the content and our general acceptance of the methodology which indicates that #by any means neccasary # is ok ,,,we will sing a different song if one of us non-involved citizens suddenly appears in the information spider-web ,,,i am concerned about the C.I.A//K.G.B techniques seeping into our manner of exposing public and private citizens with perceived links. If hacking into e-mail not addressed to someone is illegal then why not condemn those beffists in high places.They represent DA’s email long before the current e-mail texting etc.

I Wish that all liars, thieves and rubbers would be caught and ejected from fair society( and maybe by any means necessary). However, coincidentally, I was listening to talk show program and heard the guest reading one of those damning but private mails, and I really wondered if that was legal or if persons in possession of such documents could be challeneged in court. Can someone please share some light on this? (No opinions please! Consider this a teachable moment and an opportunity to educate the the ignorant)

Ego-seeking? self acclaimed? He is a thorn in your side as well as your GOVT. You could not deal with the contents. That is the most important aspect, the contents of the e-mails. As a Dominican, how did you get to know about the villas in Savanne Paille and the rightful owner and other secret dealings? Who is speaking the truth? None of you, not even if you try can deny the facts. I challenge you, your Govt. or the PM to refute those e-mail revelations. You see, if you do not want the public to know about secret deals, or politicians using public office to get rich quickly advice them to come clean and earn their assets by genuine hard work. While many Dominicans are bussing their tails working hard to earn a living, a few, especially in public office, are engaged in all kinds of dubious actions to acquire massive assets and reach ‘BIG MAN status in quick time. The statement you made in opening your comment quote “When it suits your agenda it is so wrong” I can also tell you when it suits your agenda it is so right, isn’t that so.The next thing that is disturbing is your statement made regarding Public officials and privacy, well this shows what your definition is about the subject mater to give credibility as to what you want to believe and support, that is fine, you’re entitled to your opinion and to what ever you want to believe but in the end there is something called the truth about the matter. Why is it the journalist you’re referring to is the best thing that happen to Dominica for speaking the truth. Truth is beautiful, without doubt; but so are lies.
Yes, we know emails are supposed to be someone personal property of which privacy should be respected, if it was the Government secretly reading our emails we would scream foul, why foul is not screamed when a journalist is supposed to do it to a private citizen, where are our standards. What really concerns me about the e-mail, is it authenticity, that is what we should be asking ourselves That is what should be proven before we can say privacy was compromised, as to the subject matter regarding the emails that is a serious matter but again a journalist reading an email which has not proven it’s authenticity, and used for political mileage should not be taken for truth without serious investigation. Let us not accept hearsay as truths when it is used to score political points or when it suits our political mode of thinking, that is not seeking the truth or being a good journalist, I suspect It is more about a political agenda with motives. Let us wait and see, it will play out it self.
The real issue is not the reading of private emails and other correspondence, but rather the means by which the items were acquired. Also the issue of whether the correspondence in question has been tampered with or altered by another party.
From a strictly legal standpoint a clear chain of custody must be established. Given the less than unbiased nature of the supposed “investigator” anything he claims to present is tainted and can be considered dubious in nature – certainly more fiction than fact.
You simply cannot trust anything coming from these individuals who have already proven themselves willing to lie in furtherance of their cause. It’s just a cause of more of the same from the failed UWP smear-mongers.

Reading emails not addressed to ones self is not illegal in any country as far as I know. The means by which the emails were acquired may have been illegal, but is not what this “Patriot” is referring to.
I think, someday someone is going to pay big time for these kinds of illegal activity of tapping into people emails account, recording people and airing out to all and sundry.
I think this activity needs to stop immediately, because someone will get hurt in the process,
