PHOTO OF THE DAY: History in ruins

My name is Roger Thomas.

This is a picture of the old Hampstead Methodist Church just outside the village of Hampstead near Calibishie.

I took this picture as it is a pretty building and is in relatively good condition for its age. It always catches my attention whenever I pass it and always saddens me whenever I see historic buildings left in a state of neglect. So I intend to adopt this building when I retire and restore it to a better condition worthy of a former house of God and hopefully nice tourist attraction.

    @ohyeayea:
    This is not only a picture of an old church, it is a picture of history, religion, love, education, joy, all things good. When it is renovated to its glory, it will be pleasing to all, especially to God and those long gone Methodists. I agree to a Renovation Fund and would gladly send a donation. We should all make enquiries to Arthie Martin and his team.

    Where is the great Arthurton Martin and his Dominica Conservation Society. Here is a historical building which surely needs his attention , but he was so busy trying to save an insignificant stone wall which with no help from him has been beautifully restored.
    Arthurton please use sorson al me of that Levi Strauss & Green peace to do some good,stop keeping the largess only for your personal use

    My dad went to school there. His name is Rupert John Joseph Sr and he currently resides in Delaware. I recall the days when we would drive pass on our usual Sunday tours and he would recount stories of his daily journeys from Calibishie to Hampstead and back home in the evening. He would talk about feeding his goats before setting out for school in the morning; about taking head-dives from the Hampstead bridge into the river; about asking birds on the telegraph wires whether they were late for school; about his teachers; about changing his goats when he got home in the evening; etc. I would often think, “boy, I would not have been able to survive this lifestyle”. The Conservation Association or some other heritage trust should do something about this victorian building.

    i do agree with you mr. thomas, i know of someone who has shown interest in purchasing this property because he believes that this building is worth preserving. my late grang father went to school there,my parents too. i also attended funerals there. we need to preserve our history.if the methodist church cannot maintain then they should allow someone who can.
