That building was one of the highlights of my summer vacation in Dominica. I was in awe. The home owners must be very secure ppl. Very creative in a weird way. I remember telling labeling it the ‘hellraiser house.’ As long as the ppl r comfortable in their home then cudos.

Believe it or not, this is a tourist attraction – good or bad. Since the fall of the Roman Catholic Church, this has become the most photographed building in the town.

I love the colors but I don’t understand the architecture. I just hope that it is safe because it looks like a house without a plan. It will surely get attention if this is what the owner intended. I plan to visit it next time for the close up. I can’t tell anyone how to spend their money but it sure looks like a waste to me. I’m Dominican too.

let’s wait for the finish product;it could be the owner’s version of the leaning tower.

Only in today’s Dominica. When we allow Joe Brown to build this calamity how can we justify not allowing Tom Dick and Harry to build thiers. People are actually giving others thumbs down for blaming the authorities for allowing things like that to happen. What ared we promoting another city soloeil like Haiti. Are we too ignorant or partisan sensitive to talk against the ills of society. If I was the adjoining land owner I would certainly be pissed as this kind of conduct is definitely going to devalue my property.
Would an investor be interested in investing anywhere near this property?
I would be fearful if my kids are running around playing close to a structure like this. i believe that the town council is equally responsible for allowing such thing to happen.
This is simply unacceptable and the people who are actually chastising others for talking about this eye soar and dangerous structure need to stop this backward mentality and stand up for what is right.

people call anything that’s just “weird to the eye” ART. ART is much more than putting silly things together. ART us about painting a picture and an emotion. What does this say?

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0 Anonymous August 28, 2012

that says a lot about emotion right there

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0 Rebel August 28, 2012

isnt chaos an emotion. why does Art have to be a good emotion. maybe the person wanted to potray a sense of uneasyness. maybe they wanted to potray a restless mode with clashing forms and prodruding objects. maybey it is meant to reflect how society is today, disorganised and confusing.
if that is the intent then the artist has succeded. and besides Art is supposed to envoke a discussion and the fact that we are talking about it makes it art.

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0 okay August 29, 2012

anything can be art…art can be disputed…the human body is a work of art…look up the definition of art. this expresses the owner’s creativity. i think it’s super attractive ….if i were a kid and wanted my own play house. just that it is misleading in terms of how safe it appears for kids.

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0 TW August 29, 2012

ever heard of abstract art? Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean it’s not art. That is why at an art gallery there’s always someone there who can explain a piece to you if you don’t understand it.

what is an art? all of u saying work of art wat! they most untiody house. it could only b considered work of art if the neatness was applied. that house look like pure confusion in the mind of the builder. He build the house as to exactly wat he was going thro.

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0 Rebel August 28, 2012

but my friend you have just given justified the builder intent. maybe that was his intent, to confuse the mind. what is a house. how does one define a house.

  22. Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 7 Thumb down 7 Positive vibes August 28, 2012

I think that house isplain ugly and the person needs to grow up .if he wants to “stand out” i think hw should ask experts for advice and not use his over imaginative childish imaginations…please build something better….i mean common….balisters projecting everywhere/that house looks more like a harzard than a place of safety to me

  23. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 4 Thumb down 3 Mamizoo August 28, 2012

Safety breeches, building code violation, structural hazard is less important than what some people call art.

  25. Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 8 Thumb down 5 C August 28, 2012

Think it’s great, especially seeing the evolution of the building of this house over time. Art is self-expression, which this is- so it must be art. Yes, violates planning permissions I’m sure but at the same time, some of the most interesting buildings wouldn’t have been built in history past if that were such a worry! Classic example: Sedlec ossuary (church made of human bones), google image it, fascinating!

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1 Zafa Domnik August 28, 2012

Dude, Sedlec Ossauary was ornamented with bones not built with it. You are implying that it was built with bones. It is a masonry and stone construction.

thing is, im not to sure if i should be laughing or amazed. id just like to ask the artist who or what inspired him and where does he see himself in the next five years in regards to his “WORK OF ART” maybe in the big apple …i hope. ill cher to that :?:

  32. Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 7 Thumb down 12 Tiger August 28, 2012

But seriously, why would the planning division allow this house to stand the way it is. I can see an obvious code violation with the open second floor balcony. That is patently unsafe for children.

They should insist it be rectified or they should knock it down. That is the kind of lax enforcement we have in Dominica. These people are paid to enforce codes, but they sit in their offices and don’t do their jobs.

    • Well-loved. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 7 Thumb down 0 Pedro August 28, 2012

ti@Tiger: The Planning division does not go around like a housing/standards Police nor would they have the resources to do so. And the truth of the matter is most construction activities (whether construction of bar, booth, shack, shed, house) do not go thru Planning for approval. Actually if this was enforced there would be a national riot.

      • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 2 Nonesense! August 28, 2012

You know Administrators I firmly believe that for some stories you should disable comments.

I see twenty-something comments for positive things and one hundred and tweby-something for negative things and things that are of no conseqeunce.

Allowing comments for this story, for example, only encourgaes Dominicas to speculate on things are are either of no importance, or to say things that are very hurtful to other people. Given the chance, a lot of the commentors will only say bad things.
