PHOTO OF THE DAY: A peek back in time

Many women (and some men) will remember hot combs were used to press hair. Those were probably the days before Vidal Sassoon.

Those look like they havent been on a hot coalpot…
I remember being a preteen and my cousin and I used to go to Grandbay to our aunty’s, hoping she’s hot comb our natural hair…lol
And when she did…OMG>>> Talk about being on cloud 9? We would look at ourselves in the mirror for forever…We’d also style it with ‘curlers’ and feel really good since that was the closest thing to a relaxer that we’d expereince.
While out and about, we walked with a shower cap and umbrella just in case rain decided to fall…Because hell no, that rain was not going to ruin our hot combed hair…(which, by he way took a lonnnng time to do)
I also remember the smell of burnt hair and grease…My aunt used a lot of grease when she flat ironed out hair too…
    Wonderful memories

Remember when these combs were widely made by sugar factory ‘engineers’. Many a woman got into trouble with her man for accepting an ironing comb from an ‘engineer”, as the man always thought that engineer was also offering a metal, other than the brass.

This pic has me laughing out loud. Boy I remember when we had to make First Communion and Confirmation we had to have our hair pressed on Saturday afternoon and we couldn’t venture outside until sun up on Sunday morning. We would be told to stay out of the dew so we didn’t catch a cold in our heads lol.

My mother used to press her hair every Saturday and Vidal Sassoon had nothing on her… But mark you, if you see a little water touch that hair it was back to karkar karbouit.

I myself need a hot press too. I called myself trying to grow natural, but after two combs already break in my head, I think its time to give in.
