I have one name; and I write under that name!
I am not phoney, or fictitious, I do not have to write under different fictitious names to attack anybody when I make a fool out of myself. All of you idiots who are on the attack, I challenge you to print your name on DNO., as I have done,
All the crap that you all are talking about street and where the photograph proves how ignorant you people are of your surroundings; if one lives in and cannot identify that street, that proves that you are just a bunch of confounded dumb people!
So why should I argue with people, such are the reason why Dominica is so backward: if the mind is backward, you cannot have any ambition to move forward, that is why some years ago the called Dominica conservationist were encouraging the people of Roseau to continuing living those pile of rubbish, suggesting that all they need is a coat of paint!
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahah!
You all think you can insult me; I hope some of you do not end up in the asylum after dealing with me.
You all need some geographical education on your ragged city, you all have no pride, however, ignoring the fact that those nasty old buildings still stands in Roseau will not change anything, I do not have to deal with them, I left them behind me a long time ago, and I return to Dominica, I shall reside in my village of Wesley,
where I would ensure that the home I would build and live in would be comparable to what I am living in right now.
For all I care you people can return Dominica to the days of wattle, dirt floor, and cane-trash roofs!
I am through with you all, a bunch of people with no ambition.
Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
HAHAHA… Francisco, don’t pop a vein, OK? The reason why people jumped down your throat is because you took the picture completely out of context. It was taken in the early 1960′s but based on your earlier post you made it sound like it is a recent picture and you even went as far as attacking Ian Douglas for giving Roseau a face lift when probably he was not even born yet when that photo was taken.
Hahahahaha
You made it even worst with this post. So take a chill pill, read carefully and then make your comments based on what is before you instead on going on some unnecessary tangent and keep on making a royal A out of yourself.
LOL LOL (I hope you know what LOL means eh)
Hhhahahahahahahahahahaha!
Dorivial, it takes one to know the other; if you are sure I am an A.., that means you are also one how about that!
By the way I do not know what LOL is oui, that is because I am dumb you see!
It is my bed time, I fight withyou another day!
Are you sure you are not Dorival Dodds (Dods) claiming to be John!
And by the way Ian been around for a long time, that big eye might be older than I am!
Joking I know I am older than him, but I believe he was born before 1963.

“I return to Dominica, I shall reside in my village of Wesley, where I would ensure that the home I would build and live in would be comparable to what I am living in right now”—– Francisco:
Francisco, I always believed that the statement above is what you have been implying every time you made that comment about box houses in Dominica–it was not too long before you would mention it; and so you did above–good grief!
How can you not understand that those who owned those houses, which you are looking at in that picture, would not renovate, refurbish, and what else there was to do with them, from since about 50 years ago, is beyond my comprehension.
When I left Dominica in 1974 our house was a two bedroom shack, when I returned in 2008, I found the same house, redone into a beautiful 8 bedroom home.
I am sure that the last time you were in Dominica is more than 30 years ago; well I was there in 2008–that is only 4 tears ago, since this is still January 2013.
I can assure you that Roseau is nothing that is seen in this picture–most certainly not the houses that you see there.
The few problems is that the streets are still too small, but people are purchasing vehicles like they are buying fish from the fish market–so we have a serious congestion, plus the poor sidewalks plagued with vendors–I hope this has been fixed by now.
You said that you worked at Astaphan Shopping Centre, I promise you that you will not recognize it should you go home tomorrow. They were installing escalators when I was there.
You are so busy trying to exalt yourself, that you cannot notice that everyone is looking down at you–not your looking down at them–what is your glory in humiliating yourself?.
I have not seen your house in LA, but I guarantee there are many houses, in Dominica, with much better design, inside and out, than yours in LA. I saw them with my own eyes–both inside and outside, just as I saw them advertised for sale on Dominica Weekly.
My own village looks likes a beautiful City itself–where most of our villagers are not money people, why do you think people who live in Roseau are still living with the same housing condition as in the 60′s
You can do better than that,if you would only learn to practice humility. You are really causing those who know you to feel embarrassed, but most of all we feel sorry for you–I personally do.
And you cannot say I am hiding behind a fake identity, you know who I am very well.
I knew you would have taken a swipe at me also Elizabeth, but that’s okay, I will not ever let you come to my house in Los Angeles.
Have fun judge me forever!
If is one thing I have learnt from someone from right her on DNO it the person taught me ” when people do not know any better they believe anything.”
So, more power to you.
FET.
Smh D/a never changed.. Only ting is its in HD now
Looks like Kennedy Ave. This picutre brings to mind that 2013 is the 50th anniversary of the tragic deaths of 3 talented young men on carnival Monday 1963. There was no one caught and no justice for them.
I wonder if there will be some mention or symbolic acknowledgment of this terrible event this carnival? While we must not dwell in the past, we must not forget our history. The families and other individuals affected by this event alive today must still remember that terrible day.
This is definitely Kennedy Avenue. No doubt in my mind
Looking closely at this photo, this is on Kennedy Ave.going towards Independance st.and this Photo was taken fron upstairs Cherry Lodge Hotel, that little house in the center i recognise it,i raise on this street as a little boy.
I believe you are right. I take back my earlier comment. The street sign saying ‘no right turn’ always bothered me, but it now fits the location.
If the picture was taken on second floor of Cheery Lodge, which is locater on the corner of Kings Lane and Kennedy Ave, the bit of the Carib Cinema might be captured, however, the angle would not have captured the vast hills of Goodwill, and Government building way up there in the background could not be photograph:
Simply because Kennedy Avenue is not a 1005 straight street from the guess house you mentioned.
I know that for a fact because when I was a kid, I lived on Kings Lane near the same Guess House you mentioned.
Let me say, if you are the one who submitted the photograph, than I would not be able to dispute I am wrong and you are correct, but until then!
I doh is town man eh, I is North boy, king of de mud out of Wesley oui!
FET.
This is Kennedy Avenue, the house on the left is still there, it is very old, the hose is next to where Ambrose George has his agro store. Some of the houses on the right have been changed. Just look at Goodwill and the background over Fond Cole. I used to live there, I know the place. The gutter on the right is still the same. The house closest to the left corner is where the lilac house is now. Spirit used to live in the house next to it.
This looks like Independence Street
This looks like the road going up to astaphan, one of the buildings was the building that the lady burned in the big fire.next to the mall.
But no one said it was Roseau…I don’t see mountain in Roseau…well somewhere in Dominica…
you dont see any mountains….darling the photo was taken in the 60s. stupes
the ‘mountain’ is goodwill
This photo was taken from the verandah of the Cherry Lodge Hotel looking east up Kennedy Avenue. Before 1964 it was called New Street.
Some houses demolished and others still standing. The house for Muslim Store on the “4 Corners” had not been built yet on the right hand side. Government Headquarters not built yet.
St. Aroment was still in limes and Upper Goodwill was not so built up. Chinese themed band sponsored by HHV Whitchurch.I was there. Nice picture.
Everyone is decently dressed. wow! Where are those good old days. So much nudity and looseness especially among women on the streets during carnival. It is good to see this pic.
This is priceless!
The first house on the left is still there. The former residence of Tony and Alice Mitchell.
The second structure on the left – only the bottom floor is still standing. That used to be Pablo’s (18 yellow roses) Mom’s (Marie Dechaussey) shop. Opposite that on the other side is Ms. Maggie’s shop
The 2 x 4 on the left side was a barber shop. I think I can see Lenox and B.A.B.A.”s dad, Borboy, standing in the entrance with that trade mark hat. That was his lyming spot.
The house after that is no longer there and was replaced with a concrete structure. Then the house after it was also replaced with Wallick’s Bar /residence, and after that is Ms. Ross and Ms. Spoony residence and shop. That was also replaced with a concrete structure by the same owners.
got it correct now. king george v street. corner of lootto office
There are no vehecles
I forgot the street name but that street is Police Head Quarters street. I say that because the hill at the back is goodwill.
I remember the name of the street is bath-road if not is kennedy avenue.
that is CORKstreet
think it is king geogre street.not sure
look like King George V st to me.
That pic was taken looking east from the verandah of Hayden “Poksey” Shillingford’s home on what was then New Street. Hayden’s daughter Joan, runs a shop downstairs there now. Pooney “Buljaw” was opposite. Boboy was at the left handcorner and the house closest on the right was the home of Ma Washing.
HILLSBOROUGH STREET. Saquai sort!!!!!!!!!!!
Since we’re being nostalgic what I miss about carnival is steel pan music(Fanta PAN), for me that was real talent on display. I also miss those thick lapo cabwit bands, like band matadoh.
It’s amazing the emotions that such a picture evokes… Gee, but it does serve as a reminder of where we’ve come from. There are some buildings that are worthy of preservation and others… because of their condition, should be torn down. There are many fine examples of older historic homes which have been preserved. Other, I agree should be torn or revamped.
So Mr Telemaque has some valid points. But, I think it would take incentives from either the City council or central gov’t to fundamentally improve Roseau. And too, alot of the owners of these buildings are just creeping by… having just enough for a basic living muchless for renovation or reconstruction.
It would take the gov’t to begin a massive revitalization/modernization of Roseau beginning with infrastructure – underground utilities and drainage (no exposed drains), acquisition of derelict properties thru eminent domain/tax liens, standardized wheelchair accessible sidewalks, modified/enforceable building codes, car parking garages, improved public spaces/parks/amenities, instituting revenue generating legislation (property taxes, parking tickets/fines, building permit fees, etc), paved and properly marked roads, etc, etc…
It’s sad what tourists have to go thru when they get off these ships…
this is kennedy avenue coming up rem there was no government headquarters at the time two or three of the houses are still there.
How can this be Kennedy Ave? Take a look at the trees ahead?
Back when carnival was less vulgar, safer. Where you probably wouldn’t find school children openly drinking hard alcohol on the streets. Decent dancing. AND THE TRUE CARNIVAL.
There was crimes just never reported because people didn’t know their rights… lots of children were born out of Rape!!
It was during the 60s’ some set fire in a sensai band and kill quite a few people with many others severely burnt in fact it was in 1963, so early 60s’.
There were also gangs, though different today but they existed, one can recall when Newtown gang meets St. Joe gang it was WAR… Find out more…
Every era have had there crime moments.
That is true. We must commend the police for helping keep the crime rate down, up to this day.
Many people saw the burning of the 3 sensays live an up to today when they relay the scene they are still driven to tears, to see dem guys skin melt from the rope sensay soaked in some chemical that made them shine.
Thanks to God that’s behind us, we are moving on as carnival today is largely peaceful and full of sewo.
very interesting picture…it seems that back then..the carnival was more like cultural event..right now it seems like one big orgy…interesting what made one generation of the same nation look like human being and other to be like promiscuous parody on human…

Hahahaha….Francisco, stop making a royal A out of yourself. The caption said the photo was taken in the early 60′s.
LMFAO….I really have to laugh….
it still looks the same
Dorival, let me show you how much an idiot you are!
“this road looks like the road between Charles pharmacy and guava restaurant”( Well Sa).
That is the one of the very first response to the photograph: that person is correct!
You see while I make myself a royal whatever you term me, if you were not an idiot, so quick to jump to conclusion, you would have seen that at the end I made mentioned of the late 1950′s and 1960′s when the government of St. Lucia, dealt with similar situations.
Of course the people of Castries, indeed set the city on fire to rid themselves of those old buildings. Again for your enlightenment, I said these buildings are more than two hundred years old, if you had any commonsense, you would know that those same buildings in the picture of the 1960′s are still standing in the center of Roseau today; in the year 2013!
The person under the fictitious name ” Well Sa” pointed that out!
You need to shut your mouth, and think a little bit more; that might help you to see deeper into what people are saying when you read what they write, that is the problem with people who are less educated. When we are unable to think cognitively we embarrass ourselves when we attempt to criticize and insult others.
Don’t try to insult my intelligence guy, because your laughter and insults will return to slap you in your own face as it came full circle in this very case!
For your information the last time I was in Dominica, Ron Abraham, the man whom they stole Marpin Television from; my daughter; two other people and I had breakfast in the place called Guava on that same street in the picture, the building still stands.
So, just shut up, shut up; I know what I am talking about, you don’t.
Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
Mr. Dodds was reading from his wooden glasses
This man will not read carefully before he starts criticizing–but that is all he does. He does not know how to commend a person, if he is not including himself.
Unfortunately the joke (critic) is always on him; looks like he is going to go to his grave humiliating himself–that is what the pretentious mentality, in the mind that it possesses, does to its victim–Good heavens!
Some people dont read?…It clearly says the pic is from the 60′s…..We all know this is not how it looks now!!
Francisco your comment just tell me you are one of them who have NEVER return to your homeland since you left for America many, many, many years ago…..
Imagine you think that this is a current photo…
SHAME ON YOU BOSS!!!!
Fet are you ok?
What a silly comment! I hope this is not your real name, for it would be an embarrassment to all who know you.
Francisco, Man if you cant read do yourself and everybody else a favour and dont make commentries.
FEDT…why don’t you shut the hell up. Dumb A
@ Francisco…it is fear to say that, your mouth is way faster than your brain and you are way off topic. Picture from the past..not present! You may want to sound intelligent, but what with all those run on sentences?
Time and place..
I agree with you fully, Roseau do need a facelift, Infact I was a bit embarrass when I saw the condition of the city, some of the villages like Calibishie are doing better in terms of development.
Observer when last were you in Dominica??
Come down and purchase some of the properties and uplift it nah?? You want the chinese to do it for you to cry foul??
You people in the DIASPORA like to cry down all you country too much, stay on the side and just talk talk talk!!!!!! NO ACTION JUST TALK TALK TALK…….
but what kind of observer are u? the pic said early 60′s what happen u u and francsico never been to Roseau to c the difference between the 60′s and now? smdh
My Dad is mental
Yup, poor guy… I think this time he lost it. lol
a typical dominican who cannot stick to a topic
Francisco Telemaque why are you so snobbish?? You need to calm down. The things that you are speaking about is outof context. We are just showing a picture of what carnival was a few years ago early 60′s. Sometimes we try to show off our supposedly intelligence and we only end up looking foolish because of our pride. Humility my boy!
FRANCISCO TELEMACQUE, WHAT IS YOUR STRESS? YOU SENILE OR SOMETHING? THAT IS THE 60S MAN, MORE THAN 50 YEARS AGO
DNO where is my comment?
looks like now independence street to me with a background of fond cole.lets not forget folks the tall concrete buildings of today were not there in the 1960′s. the blue building on the right hand corner looks like how the upstairs of now “charlo” used to be. ofcourse i may be wrong
You seem to be right about independence street but the background is the northern ridge of the Roseau River – that is lower and upper ST. Aromer.
DNO for more sixties or seventies carnival picture. thank you.
Boy Roseau really looked like a hole back then.
Roseau looks a bigger hole now.
lol
this road looks like the road between the Charles pharmacy and guava restaurant
no sar!. by charles pharmacy and guiave restaurant would not have hills so in the background
If I am correct, and “Well Sa” is correct, I assure you that the picture was taken by someone not at street level, but from upstairs of a building, that is why you are viewing the roof tops of the buildings, the hills in the background are on the other side of the Roseau river, and parts of Goodwill, and Santa-Roma.
The tallest building you see in the background was built I believe by Johnson Construction of Antigua, now defunct; it is the government building, intended to housed all of the government offices when it was first built!
I hope I am not wrong, in any event if I am not 100% correct, I am almost!
” guava restaurant” lmao
not one woman i seeing with a pompom shorts!
Those were the days when dominicans had respect for Dominica but now we live like animals in the jungle no respect for children, the law and ourselves we became the shameless nation sometimes we wonder if this is our very own nature island with the blessings of many rivers we were the most peaceful, respecable people in the caribbean but now can’t tell
Oh so respect is only long skirts? tell me if they had so much pride how come so many of you all mothers from that era have 15 of you, each of you a different father with all the respect?
This has to be King George V street, somewhere by Symzee
Nostalgic! A period where crime was practically nonexistent.
your mind that tell you that?!
Keyword: practically. The person didn’t say completely.
Ya true that, no camara/Iphone….they did all the same crap but kept it hidden….
What year they burn athie brother again??
this looks like independence street coming from the bridge lagoon.
i’m i correct DNO
I believe so too. There’s a building that looks exactly the same to the one near the pedestrian…
this group is spornsor by hhv witchurch.
and this area look’s like. close to lee unit. going up to the now subway.
King George v Street- around Pearl’s cuisine/the Bully’s House(Caise Bully)etc. As a child I watched the carnival from one of the verandahs with my grandmother and cousins.
this is victiria street newtown b4 foxy bakery heading down town
Looks like the corner of Kennedy ave & upper lane looking east towards Goodwill
I think you are right on this one. I was not born in the sixties, but it looks like that area.
This more looks like it
Jojo that is Kennedy Avenue
Roseau still looks the same for real. Now I don’t know if that is a positive or a negative. :S
It looks like Kennedy Avenue to me.
It looks so orderly. What happened?!
This is truly a lovely photo! I must say that Dominican women always had a sense of elegance. Look at the women in their hats. Simply wonderful!
When people were fully clothed>>
Very old school….love this photo!
Nice pic – but how unfortunate that Roseau still looks the same. So little development – yet we continue to focus on the wrong things. SMH.
But they building a state house to make Roseau look different from what it looked then and now ….and all you still complaining. SMH
Oti state house??? D president doesn’t even check that stupessss
You said the same thing, when they build the Ministry, You called it then ” THE Clarron LOHNSON HOUSE”. HISTORY, HOSTORY.WILL hold you.
excuse you. stop criticizing your country. how in the world is Roseau looking the same way as this photo from the early 60s?? lets hear about your contribution to Dominica’s development…..hm. the nerve of some people
Fed Up i guess you know is private properties that there right!!!!
So should Government acquire the properties in Roseau and build Shopping Malls from our tax money, whether the malls are rented or not??
I guess you know the term ‘Pivate Sector” that’s where people like you that Fed Up comes in, make an offer the owners will not refuse and buy off a block to put your 250 Shopping Malls, or whatever you believe will change the ambiance that will not make Roseau look like the 1960s’!!!!
SMDH
If you live outside of Da. you have’nt been home in a while, if ever. Lot of houses have been torn down and rebuilt or renovated. Stop critizing your country. There are shanti towns ALL over the world and poverty worst than da.
But in big Ney York they sleep with roaches….and when those wavette start to wofflae..all you hear is sweeeee, sweeeeee in your ears….
If Roseau had remained like that with the same building designs, but with well done repairs and paintings, it would have a unique and original beauty that would make Roseau a unique attraction for the tourist.
For those Dominicans overseas who dislike it, I know you would really enjoy it when you visit. You live in the concrete jungles of New York and elsewhere. You suffer the stress of it everyday – just look at the amount of ailments you suffer from – its all stress related you know.
How different and soothing it would be when you visit. At least for the few days you are here, your stress would be gone.
where is this. Give more info
Can anyone say which street is that
that is right around the area where the three prominent Dominicans were burnt to death in 1963,it is strange that this picture could be POD,that is King George v street, very mystic, remember that.
Kennedy Avenue. Haven’t changed a bit!
King George V Street
The first building on the right is the old Julians Jewelry store
That’s Lagoon. The corner or Kennedy Ave and Queen Mary Street going south.
those were the days of freedom and emancipation but today is reveling, riot masacre and murder!!
Nice …But i’m trying to figure out what part of Roseau this is ? Anyone knows ?
looks like kennedy avenue
That should be easy because the city has not changed since the photo was taken.
yet you failed to tell us where u think this is tssssssssssssssssssssssssk!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is on New Street now Kennedy Avenue (on 4 corners) Old Madesh grocery shop on left and Miss Margey shop on right.
Not one piece of skin showing. Oh so it is possible to have fun without parading naked on the streets. Nice pic.
where the story of the guy, they kill in gwada nah d.n.o
Papa, ehbeh Roseau was ugly lol
lol. alas!
This looks so peaceful and should be used as a learning tool for our younger people of today.
so what are they going to learn? times have changed, many young people wont even look twice at this photo.
Can anybody figure out what street is that? Would really like to know…
