This is sugar apple (pomme canel). I had some in November from my father’s tree. Kashima has a different smell, taste and texture. Come on people, they are in the same family but not the same fruit. It’s been 27 years since I lived in Da full time, but I know my fruits. Some things can never be forgotten. True daughter of the soil.
It has been such a long time since I ate a sugar apple. This exotic fruit seems to be very scarce. Dominica is blessed with the best fruits.
I would love to eat some sugar apple. I remember those days in DA when I ate them. They have little seeds but I enjoyed them. They are sweet and delicious.
God gave us all those fruits for good, health reasons. Fellow Dominicans in DA you are so fortunate. Make the most of them.
I bought some Canadian or imported pears from another country with some apples. The pears are ripe. I peeled them and noticed among the few a small, different fruit, the size of the pear which I could not cut through. It has a seed which I could not see because of the outer fruit. It appeared or so I thought to be Pomseterre (I hoped I spelled this correctly). This is the first time I have seen this fruit in Toronto. I wonder if it was mistakenly packaged with the others. Anyway, I placed them in the fridge and will make Smoothies with all of them – combined. They should be delicious.
In Dominica we have such blessed privilege of simply going to a plant tree to find our craving fruit or foods to quench or hunger.
But we refuse to see the blessings we have from God, and we listen to those mad-man politicians who tell us we are poor–as they use those carnal reasons to gain fame and stutus.
I give thanks to God for the few of us in Dominica who will continue to notice God’s blessings of Life to us, and to give thanks for everything.
How I would love the privilege of simply going to the tree of orange, grapefruit, Kishima, mango, and all of the others that we have in Dominica.
Instead I have no choice but to spend money on fruits that were picked long before maturity and forced to turn yellow through artifical light; just to find out that I must throw it away because of lack of maturity and flavor?
@ Liza
You are so correct! Recently, I had the identical discussion with a friend who told me told me that she bought some mangoes which are green and they may take months to ripe; an over- exaggeration of course. I told her before they ripe they will be rotten.
We have that problem. I recently bought a few mangoes, still unripe.
Avocado is another one. I have realized that the only ones that remain for a long time without going bad are apples and you do not have to put them in the fridge for a long time, if you so wish.
Liza, you could make Smoothies with them including bananas and Canadian (imported) pears. Smoothies are delicious with water or milk. Check out http://www.sympatico.ca for Best Health recipes. This Website also has a lot of health information.
On occasion I have observed Caribbean/WestIndian recipes. I save them for later use.
God bless!
Is that Pomme Karnel or Kashi mah? I can’t tell nah! Oh Yeah. The height of the tree tells me that it is KASHIMAH.
Sorry boss thats a pomme kanel, not a kashiman. There’s a big difference between a sugar apple(pomme kanel) and a kashiman(custard apple)I suggest you go take a good look at both trees, take pictures and post them on this site. That’s your assignment.

Locally, this is sugar apple. There is also a purple colored one too. Loves dry, sunny areas and is as sweet as sugar, just as the name implies.
By the way, there is a star fruit (chrysophyllum cainito)tree in the Botanical Gardens on the western side of the office building. The building near the tree that fell on a bus, reminder of Hurricane David.
Sugar apple, oh boy do i miss u!! Remembering all the trees we had in our yard. Would do anything to have one right now, smh!
OH! how i love, star apple, very much i wish to have one, right now all these things makes me home sick.
Long time self I haven’t had a cashima. But DNO as if I find all you taking it for a habit. Some of us have to work you know. Those things cost money in our neck of the woods and some places don’t even have them. Is not like we can just go down the road by Ma Bab and ask her for one. sha man!!

Kashima is custard apple (Annona reticulata) this is sugar apple (Annona squamosa). They are very closely related.
That photo gave me goose bumps! It’s been 2 decades since I had sugar apple. My mouth still waters at the sight and thought of it. (sighhh)
This looks like a regular sugar apple to me. The star apple I know does not look like this.
