Twenty-two volunteers from the Roseau area have joined the ranks of the Dominica Red Cross following an enrolment ceremony which was held at the Red Cross National Headquarters on World Red Cross Day.

World Red Cross Day is celebrated annually on May 8 annually, to commemorate the birth date of the founder of the International Red Cross Movement, Henry Dunant.  This year’s observance under the theme `150 Years of Humanitarian Action’ commemorated the 150th anniversary of the International Red Cross Movement which comprises 187 National Societies (including the Dominica Red Cross National Society), the International Federation (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).  This year the Dominica Red Cross celebrated its 55th anniversary locally.

Other activities at the function included a presentation by Club 25 volunteers on the 7 Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross whom then proceeded to provide their understanding of `150 Years of Humanitarian Action’.   An address by the Director General, Mrs Kathleen Pinard-Byrne and President, Mr Phillip White focused on the innovative approaches needed to keep abreast of evolving programme implementation whilst recognizing the important role played by volunteers in providing their services.  Reference was made to the need for financial support to the Society from both private and public entities in order to enable the high level of training provided to volunteers and vulnerable communities island-wide.

Here are some photos from the enrolment ceremony. All photos by Zaimis Olmos.

congratulations to you all;you have done something worthwhile. be strong and courageous and take pleasure in what you do. when I got enrolled as a Red Cross member in the early 90’s out of about 18 people I was the only male, and i had to have courage to continue.so don’t give up inspite of what is or might have been said.Go out and help others and God will help you too.
