A career in business is about sacrifice and setting priorities Isaac says

Joseph Isaac

Minister for Environment, Climate Resilience, Disaster Management and Urban Renewal, Joseph Isaac, has told young entrepreneurs that going into business is about sacrifice and setting priorities.

Isaac, who also represented Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, was addressing the 14th graduation ceremony of the Dominica Youth Business Trust (DYBT) held at the Goodwill Parish Hall on Wednesday.

“It doesn’t matter what your idea is, you have to believe in your idea, do your research and stay focused. So trust me when I say that once you can remain patient, determined and always willing to adopt new strategies and approaches to remain relevant, to include innovating ideas, you will succeed,” he said. “But I don’t want to give you the impression that it is all a bed of roses. Entrepreneurship and going into business is really about sacrifice and setting priorities.”

He explained that when one has $5000 to spend to buy a piece of equipment, for example,” if you are doing agro-processing and you need a small pasteurizer, do you buy the small pasteurizer or you take it to ‘sewo’ for two weekends and you blow $1000 and then you don’t have enough to be able to buy that equipment.”

According to Isaac, in the long-term, the sacrifice yields the reward of getting more out of what one has put in.

Meantime, Youth minister, Justina Charles, said the ceremony is another milestone in the lives of young people.

“You have reached a milestone in your life and you are just starting to walk-the-walk,” she said.

Charles said that there are many areas in which young people can be empowered and it is the need to that is “critical” She said government also needs to create an enabling environment to facilitate this process.

Charles highlighted the need to address youth unemployment and under-employment and to transform the lives and the socio-economic landscape of young people and their families.

She advises the youth to take seriously the opportunities that are afforded to them.

“Because we talk about youth empowerment, but if you are not receptive, if you are not open to receiving what is made available for you, it’s going to be useless,” Charles remarked.

Thirty potential and existing entrepreneurs will receive certification for completing the two-week Entrepreneurial Development Programme and the three-day Small Business Assistant Facility. Forty-four entrepreneurs will also be certified for attaining training which was sponsored by Promotion of Regional Opportunities for Produce through Enterprises and Linkages [PROPEL].

In case anyone in this thread is actually interested in entrepreneurship, there’s a fantastic podcast called “How I Built This” in which NPR journalist Guy Raz interviews the founders of well known companies and tells their stories. It’s interesting how often the early days of what would someday become a big business require a lot of creative thinking and outright hustling.

The man is right. Starting your own business or as he said, going into business, you must sacrifice and setting priorities. Only if you born into a golden spoon you will not sacrifice and set priorities right. Business to me is sacrifice , priorities and determination if you don’t apply these Crapo Smoke Your Pipe.

Issacs should try Reggae. He reminds me so much of Eric Donaldson.
He’ll be singing ” I was old DLP on Monday, UWP on Tuesday Neo-DLP on Wednesday ,a nobody on Thursday. Can’t even attempt to make bread on Friday .I wrote to my constituents on Saturday but they would not reply.

“A career in business is about sacrifice and setting priorities Isaac says”
Issac, what are you saying and at the sametime you continue embrace this comical failed PM Skerrit and his corrupt worthless, hopeless failed Labour Government. This is an oxymoron.
What are the sacrifices undertaken, is it your jumping of ship from one decent professional Political part (UWP) with a decent leader and members and you jump ship to get in the company of a failed Leader Pm, that you told us about before you jump ship. Issac what is the morale of your story? It appears you jumped ship for personal matters and we got to know that you may have been consulting with the this failed inept PM Skerrit for a while before you abandoned your own decent UWP to mingle with a failed PM and a very corrupt failed hopeless Labour government. You know that, you told us all about them before you blindly crossed that floor. Enjoy the riches my friend, you have failed us and failed Domininca. Skerrit must Go &…

Mr. Isaac deserves nothing but our collective scorn. Here is a man who is embedded with a group of persons who has reviled him, sent police to his house at an unholy hour of the day to intimidate him, dragged him before the court on spurious charges, yet Isaac goes to bed with them. He also has betrayed his constituents. Does a man like that deserve our respect? HELL NO!

UWP negativism is getting to me. Let some things past. As an independent voter I am getting irritated by all this negativism. Focus on the plans and programs that you all have to bring economic prosperity to Dominica. Taking over power is very easy but the difficult task is to manage the economy.

Independent Voter, one can walk and chew gum at the same time. The two are not mutually exclusive. Yes, I would like the opposition parties to put their strategic action plans before the public and sell them. Isaac’s betrayal of his constituents by crossing the floor without their nod was patently wrong. It’s people like him who enable the Skerrit-led regime to perpetuate their reign of greed, corruption and misery on the people. He should be hounded until the constituents vote him out of power in the upcoming elections. In fact, the people should adamantly demand that he resigns as he has gravely betrayed their trust in him. If Isaac had campaigned as a member of the SLP in the last general elections he would have most certainly lost. The man is nothing more than a dishonest opportunist looking to get his snout in the government’s trough. He has sold his soul.

I concur Ibo France however I’d take it a step further as you only know what is now being manifested. Issac grew up in extreme poverty so what do you expect. I know him well and every truant does.

What or who are you, an independent person or Negative person? Make up your mind and you write, debate accordingly, to what you see and feel about our ailing and failed Domininca under this corrupt Labour Government, its failed 18 ministers and its very failed, waste of a time Prime Minister Skerrit. They have let us down big time, with talk and more talk of nonsense taking us nowhere. Domininca has been placed into the abyss of corruption, nepotism, fraudulent behaviour and a failed leader who knows nothing of socio-economic development. We within the government service desperately waiting for this clown PM to go. Let us make way for decent politics, honest people in the name of the UWP. They deserve their turn now and Skerrit must Go and he takes his failed 18 ministers and failed labour party to go, to get lost, to just go away. We are fed up, sick, disgusted and tired of illiterate politicians and a Santa Claus Pm running down our poor island into deeper poverty. Skerrit must Go.

Bye guys cannot stay whole day as you do. Lots of other things to do.

jamie there are opportunities. I know that there are a lot of employment for young men but they just sit idly by the roadside blocks – some smoking away their lives. We need to pray without ceasing for them. There are so many mothers hurting because those young men (especially) can do much better with their lives. Many are disrespectful to their parents as well. But we need not give up. I am so happy whenever I see a young man turn around his life. If we are better, we are all ambassadors for Christ and need to reach out to them. I do firmly believe that Marijuana ( yes has medicinal properties) but is being misused by the younger generation. Alcohol too and cigarettes. Blessed evening to you. Need to go now as I do have many other things to complete. Be blessed.

I can guess that you guys are miserable, lazy, disgusted with yourself, your lives, perhaps not really achieving anything at all. It is not too late but you guys can purge yourself of the mental slavery of hatred. Ask the Father to deliver you. You are only hurting yourselves. First Love the Creator who gave us life, made that Universe. Give him all his glory. Remember he sent his son for our redemption. So seeking a relationship with the Father, understanding how he loved us, who expects us to love others inspite of their shortcoming (he is forever faithful , forgiving us as long as we submit to his will). Get personal with the Mighty Creator, surrender, you will be transformed, erasing the hurt & hatred plaguing you right now. Go for it. Fast from the computer, internet, just bask in the presence of the one you are seeking. He is waiting. I would really like to see this attitude erased from your mind. Do not allow the enemy to do havoc with your minds. Jesus loves u save

It is the Lord the lord who has them where they are in poverty. the Lord is guides us spiritually and Godly and it is up t us to pick up the bucket and go fetch the water because Skerrit just cannot do it for you and us. Satan was a false believer with alot of talk and persuasion and today he is still roaming the world in the body of some of our failed Prime Ministers and government ministers wasting states money and resources while our people and in poverty and turned into beggars in Haiti and Domininca and some African countries where the riches and the fun rests in the hands of these corrupt Prime Ministers and Presidents. Who the damn cap (Red) fits let them wear it in shame. Those who have joined these bad band of corruption, you will be judged harsley if failed to get out and repent. While our people go deeper in poverty you Labour government people are feeling nice and in denial for love of a very failed Skerrit. Just Go

Guys! Paul Rossnof, % I am really fed up of your negativity! What are you all doing? Your careers? Where do you Work? I am really disgusted at your attitudes! You are daily making those negative comments since any of the Government Ministers, Personnel etc come to speak about something . anything!
I challenge you – Did any of Isaac’s statements encourage laziness (you all seem to encourage) or demotivate small entrepreneurs (a strategy you all guys employ daily)? Do you realize that Isaac could not stay in that kind of atmosphere you guys are creating – hating, jealousy etc. Your attitudes irks so I stand in solidarity with Isaac when he said he wanted to help in the rebuilding of Dominica. In a critical and negative environment, one cannot thrive but the negative atmosphere hinders even yourselves. Young people should be encouraged to become entrepreneurs as no government’s purse cannot provide jobs for everyone who desires employment. However, government must create the enabling economic environment for businesses to thrive. Where are the strategic plans to incentivize young people to start their own businesses? Is the present economy growing in leaps and bounds to accommodate and sustain many new business enterprises?
People don’t need happy talk, they need an action plan in place to assist them with start up capital, very low interest rates for business loans, the educational institutions to produce skilled and qualified prospective employees and a booming economy.
Presently the economy is stagnated. It is in the ICU. Needs a monumental injection of funds to resuscitate it.

You are failed businessman, failed politician, now Dr. Punjab/Duquesne puppet! How can one who failed in selling a common commodity as bread, advised people on how to operate a business?

“Going into business is about sacrifice, and priorities.”(Isaac).

Hogwash, going into business is all about making money, anything that takes precedence over that means the investor is domed to failure, they should have taught you that when you were in economics class in Mexico!

Here is how ignorant that guy is: Sacrifice is defined as to suffer loss of something, such as money, to renounce or destroy something as your ideal belief. If one is going into business with the mentality, of failure what’s the point?

I will not even focus on the term priorities, because there can only be one priority where it pertains to business and that is to make money, and be profitable, and successful. I am glad you are no longer part of the UWP, with your mentality of failure Roosevelt…
