Digicel has reported “excellent” progress in restoring its mobile network with 90% of sites now up and running.
Digicel Dominica’s technical teams, with the support from teams across the Caribbean who arrived on island on Friday, are now moving to connect the remaining areas once it is safe to do so, a press release stated.
“In addition, Digicel is giving customers over $200k in free credit to ensure they are able to make and receive calls, text messages and emails – and contact loved ones at home and abroad at this time,” the release stated.
On the Digicel Play side, TV and broadband access is restored and customers can access local, regional and international news on TV and communicate online with friends and family abroad. Further, crews will be traveling throughout the island in the coming days and weeks to check in on existing customers and be available to new ones, the release said.
Digicel has also been supporting relief efforts on the island – specifically with boats carrying food supplies and other relief items for staff and residents in the communities of Scott’s Head and Coulibistrie and to the Red Cross for distribution.
Digicel is also sourcing blankets, mattresses and stoves from St. Lucia for those most in need. In addition, the company is reaching out to some of the communities that have experienced great loss to ensure that handsets are available or residents to communicate with family and friends.
