Police have confirmed that two people died in an early morning traffic accident on Saturday on the Mahaut village road.

According to the police, the accident occurred when a speeding motorcycle collided with a pedestrian.

The motorcyclist reportedly died on the spot while the pedestrian was rushed to hospital in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries.

The two have been identified as Yonnel Pascal and Leslie George.

A third individual is nursing wounds, not said to be critical, at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

The fatal accident occurred at about 3am Saturday.

DNO will provide more details as they become available.

Firstly I’d like to say to the families of the desist, accept my condolences and hope you find peace.
I live abroad and it’s sad to constantly here of road traffic accidents and it’s nerve racking to go through the web to find out wether it’s one of your friends or worse, your relatives involved. I was on the island recently and shockingly nearly collided with a wreck less motorcyclist. The roads are lawless. The entire island is lawless and no one respects laws and regulations. People they are their for your safety and it’s 2012. The world is moving forward but yet Dominica remains primitive. This becomes more apparent when you live in a civil country like England or America. More traffic penalties should be imposed. Speeding and wreck less driving should not go by unnoticed. Drinking driving is also I major factor to a lot of these incidents and from my time on the island during December, I was astound to see the amount of drunk drivers operating vehicles. Do you know that in the uk it is elligal to ride without a helmet…. Not in Dominica. A lot of riders would be alive today if that was enforced. Sadly I hope one day Dominica will advance with the rest of the world.

I hate to disappoint you. I hope you took Catechism from youth and practice the faith. Let us face the fact. Do not be presumptious. This is a sin against the Holy Spirit. You must consider the life they lived. Only the holy enters Heaven and immediately so. Know what is contained in Holy Scripture. You should know what St. Paul said, “Nothing defiled will enter Heaven. I hope that God forgave them their sins. This is why He created Purgatory which some people denounce but it is a fact.
Were it not for Purgatory many more souls would go to Hell. It is the love and mercy of God. You better believe it.

@ Justice and Truth. I have a few Bibles that I read very often and for many years. I have never seen the word Purgatory. Justice and Truth, read a Bible. Purgatory doesn’t exist. There are only two ways and not three. The broad and narrow. One leads to Eternal life and the other to destruction. Purgatory is a lie used by the Roman Catholics and the devil to blind people and lead them to hell. Ask the Holy Spirit to help u. Be blessed!!

This is very sad. I am not sure how much is preventable but loss of life with motorbike related accidents is on the rise. Whether the deaths were head related or not; just a reminder that helmets and seatbelts saves lives and should be mandatory in Dominica. We can blame alot of factors, but ultimately all users of the road have responsibiliies to themselves and others too.

Such a ridiculous statement ‘no one is to be blamed for the accident’. The blame is at one man’s doorstep—the driver. As a result of foolish and hardy riding Yonnel is gone and his family left to mourn and you are left to mourn yours. He was not standing in the road asking to be hit was he? All we are asking is slow down….slow down.

When the bird is dead…ants eat the bird!
Time and circumstances can change at any time…
Don’t devalue or hurt anyone in life.
You may be powerful today…but remember,
Time is more powerful than you!!
One tree makes a million match sticks…
    But when the time comes…
Only one match stick is needed to burn a million trees.

IT IS SO SAD….. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE DON’T TAKE THEIR TIME TO DRIVE IN DA. THERE ARE NO ROADS FOR FAST DRIVING. DRIVING IN DA IS LIKE DRIVING ON A BACK ROAD. ANYONE BALL, CHILD, MAN OR WOMAN CAN BE PASSING OR SHOW UP UNEXPECTEDELY. DRIVERS NEED TO BE MORE CAREFUL. I DO NOT LIVE IN DA BUT I HAVE WITNESSED THE DANGEROUS DRIVING WHEN I WAS THERE. PEOPLE BECAREFUL. HAVING SAID ALL THAT, THERE IS A TIME FOR EVERYTHING. A TIME TO BORN AND A TIME TO DIE. IT IS GOD’S TIME. IT IS NOT ABOUT LEAP YEAR OR IF THEY WERE HOME IT WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. This is silly:

      – Inland Revenue have all vehicle licences (Incl. motorbikes) on a computer data base.
      – It is not possible to get a valid road licence without first producing insurance cover or pass a physical check.
      – It should, therefore be easy enought to establish, who has and who has not paid.

The registration numbers (licence plates ) of vehicles that have not complied within a reasonable amount of time , should be confiscated or scrapped at the registered owners’ expense. (this would aslo take care of those conveyeances that are not roadworthy).

Accidents are inevitable however, we should take steps to reduce them, Residential communities as Mahuat and Masacre should have maximum speed limits posted. There should be speed bumps to reduce speeding. There should be designated pick up and drop off locations for buses. Sad to see such young men with their lives ahead of them lost. Lets dedicate some of these changes in their honor.

So sorry to hear that two people had to die this way. This road is a death- trap, especially now that has been resurfaced. I always pass through there with great trepidation: vehicles parked on the main road blocking through traffic, buses stopping anywhere without warningin the middle of the road impeding the flow, pedestrians jumping into the road and crossing it without warning! Most buildings border with the edge of the road, not even leaving space for a pedestrian walkway. THAT ROAD SHOULD NOT RUN THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE VILLAGE!! I’m afraid we’ll see more victims.

Its something else to believe this happened. Because Two fridays ago I was driving through Mahaut and around the Area by Krams I saw with my eyes a cyclist hit a guy and send him on the other side of the road and he never stopped. I slowed down and just shook my head. The guy staid standing not sure if he ever felt anything the day after. Boy oh boy…. Sty strong family memebrs.

Thats a fool trying to be cute. With this “N” word tells us some of us are still under bondage. Say what you want its your opinion I agree. But smart people and those who know their history do not use this “N” in their conversation. I am sorry let who the cap fit sound off. The little things friends lets keep it real and grow up if we want to be respected as human beings. No hard feelings just calling it as I see it.

It is obvious that there are some people who do not obey road regulations. He was fully aware of the road accidents in DA which resulted in loss of lives especially to motorcyclists. The problem is they think that it will never happen to them.
Even though it was early morning and there was very little or no traffic, this gave him no reason to speed and to injure a pedestrian which led to both their deaths.
Two more lives are taken away through an accident. They are constantly warned. What will it take to convince them that fast driving is dangerous and not driving on their side of the road? When will they learn a lesson of safe driving and that slow and steady wins the race?
Drivers, bicyclists and motorcyclists pay heed! Life is precious. While driving and riding do your utmost to preserve your life and that of others. Drive safely and obey the rules of the road no matter what time of day and night.
Sudden deaths of loved ones and in such a manner is not easy to bear. My heartfelt sympathy to their family members. May God give you the strength to bear their loss.

what is happening to sweet dominica?i am a driver too, and sometimes i speed as well, but when i remember that this piece of machinery was created by man, and that it can break down at any time, i slow down. however, no ones knows if they were driving quickly or if they were under the influence of alcohol or so. what we do know right now and it’s a fact, they are dead.may their souls rest in peace. i don’t know them but i am praying for the families because i don’t know how i would take this piece of bad news at 3 in the morning if it were my family. R.I.P boys. to the family, you needed them around you but God has a better plan for them.just rest in the arms of the Lord and you will be just fine!

I’m sorry to hear about these young guys losing their lives.Having lost a loved one to a motorcycle accident and being a rider myself I want to say to the riders be careful.I know y’all love the power and speed by my friends it just takes one moment,a second for something terrible to happen. We have a lot young riders out there some inexperience and some just riding bikes that are way too powerful.I mean a 1000 street motorcycle must be handled by a rider with years of experience and discipline. Some of these motorcycles are not the best type of motorcycle for our terrain and roads.I love the feel of the street bikes, they handle the best on the roads but are also the fastest hence the easiest to get into trouble on. I’m saying all this to let these young riders know to be smart, ride safe, wear a helmet and protective gear.Understand that stopping a motorcycle from 60mph takes about 120 feet of road and that’s just at 60mph,so again ride smart my riding friends. To the government I would say limit the age and experience of riders from street bikes about 600cc to 30years with at least 3 years experience with a clean record. We have to create a smarter, safer environment for our riders.I’m seriously thinking of setting up a motorcycle safety course along with motorcycle rider course for Dominica. These courses should be considered for motorcyclists at least in terms of licensing of more powerful motorcycles.I doesn’t have to be me to start it,I’m just saying it needs to be done.

    • Jahbless
      April 1, 2012

Street Biker,I agree with you 100%The government should put limits on the riders of certain displacement power for street motorcycles. From 50cc to 600cc entry/intermediate level anything above 600cc u must have at least 3 years of riding experience with a clean record.Along with a helmet law that should at least help bring the fatality numbers down.Riders understand that these motorcycles are designed from a racing background and can literally be considered street or road converted race motorcycles.Do you really need to have a motorcycle that goes up too 170 mph in Dominica? Definitely not,but that doesn’t mean that u will ride it that fast.We shouldn’t be band from having them but it should be limited to experienced riders. It goes back to what u mentioned street biker, these larger displacement street bikes should be only allowed to experienced and disciple riders which generally are more mature riders 30 years old and above. It’s definitely something the authorities should be looking at.

I’m like 100% certain that he did not have sufficient insurance to cover the cost of his victim’s /the pedestrian funeral!

One way to get them off the streets with these zootee lamort is to have them them covered with at least $200,000 in compulsary insurance to cover harm and /or destruction to peolpe or property.

RIP So very sorry to hear about this accident. I have total sympathy for the families and friends of the dead young men!

Motor bikes and Scooters are very dangerous!! Why do I keep seeing people riding motor bikes without wearing helmets or protection at all. They have pillions on their motor bikes and scooters, who wear no helmets. My friends son died the first time he accepted a ride on a motor bike because he did not wear a helmet??? How many of these motor bikers and scooter riders have passed their test and have paid their insurance. Whoever is importing these machines has to also be held responsible. Do not sell a motor bike or scooter without selling a helmet. It is very sad and I think there will be a great many more accidents of this kind. I witnessed an accident on the same day after it occurred in the morning just by Fond Cole but it has not been documented on DNO yet? These machines need to be treated properly they are dangerous if not handled properly.

I was home for carnival 2012 and I got the impression that we are beginning to be afraid of these young undesirables. My wife was knocked down on Carnival Monday night by three young men on motorbikes just driving with a willful and wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property. It happened just after the New Bridge on the Potterville side and there were more than 50 people or so waiting for buses at that location. After helping up my wife, I was prevented by all three of them from photographing their bikes by pushing and shoving me. I was not successful and they eventually left. However, what was very sickening and disturbing is that not one person came to our assistance or even made a phone call to the police.

I was later told that no one came to my assistance because I was from the Diaspora. :(

I was carrying a camera around my neck…so, that probably explains it.

The famous poem on inactivity by the German people:
First they came for the communists,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.
    Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

That sound good at first but what about the careless decisions that causes one to die BEFORE the time that they were supposed to die. I agree that only the giver of life know when that time is but many time persons die below the 70 yrs allotment given by the designer of life and it is because of violating the HIS rules for life and living. For example: He states – Children obey your parents . . . that you may live long and good in the earth. – I wonder how many PREMATURE deaths could have been avoid directly or indirectly because of disobedience of parents or the rules of the creator and the consequence follow after (although some follow immediately). Some may think that this sounds out of place. but remember anything one make and design he is the authority on it, and the Creator and Designer of Life has so given His instruction to govern life for it to be meaningful and come to maturity. (Well, all this may not make sense to you if you are not one of those who believe that if you explode a car with a bomb it will make a helicopter for you. [for in essence that is what the “Bib Bang” of evolution believe] so if there is no creator of designer then there is no one with authority on life and everyone can do as they want and devalue their life and the life of others because “there is no one to answer to”) No one in this present state on earth is going to live forever but there is an appointed time for each of us to die. Many have died before that appointed time and most due to their own disobedience to the rules of engaging life. Worse yet many have died unprepared for the next stage of life after this life. Be ready by following the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth (BIBLE) and you may not die before your time and certainly you will not die unprepared.

I am not supporting predestrian over motorist(nor vise versa), at times I am both (whilst not at the same time). I ‘ll say this, I live on the West Coast too and know that MAHAUT PEOPLE are noted for “not respecting moving traffic” a reputation they seem to carry around for generations now! On the other hand Leslie “LOZ” George’s reputation for driving or riding “at break neck speed” preceeds him! Whilst we are very saddened by the news alot of us who know Leslie personally WERE NOT SURPRISED as he has a nat for “risky behaviour whilst commanding a motor cycle or vehicle and ofcourse it was only a matter of time for something of that nature to happen to him especially in a community like Mahaut. My comments are not to be seen as “insensitive or meant to offend anybody” but alot of people are aware of the “FACTORS” involved and afraid to express their views. I am not looking for support, will just ask that we reflect on my comments that I have made and draw your own conclusions. The moral of the situation is this “ALL road users should exercise a high level of caution” since we are ALL at risk on the roads we travel daily. May the departed souls rest in peace and may the grieving families & friends experience God’s peace in the midst of this painfully difficult situation!!!

The truth is ‘leap year” has nothing to do with it, being wise has everything to do with it. We all must learn to exercise caution at all times and have regard for humanity.

Drivers whether its a densely populated area or not, you should refrain from speeding as no one is immune to accidents. One last thing, stay close to Father God.

With that said, I am sorry to hear about our two young men, don’t know them, but we are all one family. Father GOD, watch over their relatives.

They scare you, they rev up their bikes, then speed past you, almost into oncoming traffic. Nice guys but unwise choices on the roads. Just the other day while I was driving I saw one and it was only luck and chance while he did not get into an accident. Please drivers, I know you are excited about the new roads, but roads do not kill people, speed bumps or not. Drivers need to take caution, and think about the pedestrians and other drivers. SO if you know someone or related to someone with a bike, please ask them to take care on the road, don’t wait to say ‘Rest in Peace”.

      What is length?

Nowhere in the Bible, in God word he ever mention, or spoke of such a thing as Length!

That is another of the Roman Catholic religious doctrine, false teachings, which has noting to do with the word of God, so too is what they called the Rosary, if you can find the word rosary in the Bible, quote me a chapter, and verse where I can find it and read it, and will pay you whatever you want for pointing it out to me.

Jesus directed Christians to observe the Passover, he did not mention anything about length, Easter, Christmas, and all that nonsense!

Yours is nothing more than a superstition, people can party anytime they want.

        Telemaque

Some of you have a problem. You do not know all what is contained in Holy Scripture. Some interpret it according to their mentality. You will not comprehend it because you may not have been a Catholic. If per chance you were, you do not know Holy Scriptures and are unable to interpret it.
There is the religious teaching of the Catholic Church. Lent is another religious teaching of the Church as approved by The Holy Spirit.
Many religions who consider themselves Christians observe it as well. Therefore, learn this and leave it alone. Lent is here to stay until the end of time. It is an observance, in memory of the passion, crucifixion and death of Our Lord Jesus Christ. I always inform people to pray to God for enlightenment and discernment that He may reveal the truth to you.
For your information, divorce is in the Holy Bible and many divorce. They do not observe what Our Lord Jesus Christ said that, “…Because of the hardness of their hearts Moses gave them a bill of divorce but it was not so – from the beginning.”
St. Paul also spoke about it if their husbands/wives are still alive they should not marry. Since you criticize and condemn the Catholic Church for its religious teachings pertaining to Our Lord Jesus Christ, condemn yourself due to your lifestyle and some others. God is taking note.

      March 31, 2012

      @us military

Why would so many people give you thumbs down? Are they not Christians? Probably non-practicing ones.
I do agree with you. You are correct and made good sense. I recall those days when there was no partying in Lent. This is the reason why there is Carnival two days before Lent. In any case, at 3 AM they should be at home sleeping.
When we do not obey God this is surely true what could happen and other incidents. In this era, few think of God and few worship Him. The price is to be paid for this. They are too busy doing their own thing. When problems befall them they say why me? Our Lord would say, “Why not you? What have you done not to deserve it?”
As one who resides in Toronto, I received an email notification from the Toronto Dominica Association that there was (incidentally – strange things happen) a Mahaut re-union/fund-raising in Toronto. This would have been a party/dance. In talking to someone about it I said we are in Lent and why are they having a reunion party in Lent? Are they not Catholics? In those days Mahaut people were practicing Catholics. I do know many of them from Mahaut. I further stated that I will not attend. One was a pedestrian. The toxicology tests will determine if they were under the influence of liquor or drugs.
Are you going to give me thumbs down as well for standing up for the truth?
At the same time I hope God had mercy on their souls.

But God did not ‘call him home’. His home was here on earth, taking care of the responsibilities God gave him, namely, his two children and wife (if married). Why would a loving God call him away from caring for his family, leaving them to grieve and perhaps struggle financially etc?

This is an old adage believed by millions of people around the world which may very well be true but we must not be paranoid about it. Strange things could happen to us when we least expect it. A lot of things happen which may or may not be attributed to it.
I do not give Leap Year a thought except when I hear and read about it. We should just live our lives hoping for the best, trusting in the Lord and asking Him for assistance and protection, knowing that He holds the key and is in control. Some do not give this a thought.

Satan must be moving through you for you to say something like that.

    • Man in Dominica
      March 31, 2012

Blaming it on Satan is a good way for us to ignore what we can do to prevent accidents. Oh, it doesn’t matter how fast I drive, or whether I drink and drive, or whether I wear a helmet on my bike. Accidents may still happen regardless, and I can’t say who was at fault here if anyone, but Satan nonsense is not at all helpful. Leap year is just a thing we do with the calendar because the length of a calendar year is not exactly the same as a full orbit of the earth around the sun. The leap year adds a day every four years to adjust for that. If you are commenting on here, you obviously have internet access and could learn about these things by searching online. Don’t stay in your ignorance; put out some effort to learn.

      @ DA

Yes especially when the death is sudden. Did they have time to even ask God forgiveness for their sins?
Next week is Holy Week and Satan will be more rampant when more people give God His dues on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. The Churches are filled with people. I have to go early so that I will get a seat.
Recognizing that Our Lord Jesus Christ died for us, there is nothing that makes Satan angrier and to know what he lost forever due to pride, disobedience and rebelliousness and will never regain it. He knows that we who are alive still have that opportunity to obtain eternal salvation. This is why he goes about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. We are told to reject him. It may be hard to do but it is worth a try until we die. Consider this also during Holy Week leading up to Our Lord’s Resurrection.
Have a blessed week and a joyful Easter. God bless!

Is there a 3am Saturday evening?

    • Positive
      March 31, 2012

What’s the point of your question? Are you referring to the earlier statement ‘early morning traffic accident on Saturday’ and the closing statement ‘3am Saturday’? You need to be more specific or people will interpret it to mean what they want. The purpose of the article is not about the language used. Focus on the purpose. In case you are referring to the earlier and closing statements, This is what you call restatement in English Language. It is not an additional statement. It’s called repetition for emphasis. Learn about the English Language before commenting and trying to make people look or feel bad.

That’s some disturbing news so early in the morning… Both Pedestrians and Motorist need to exercise vigilance with when using the roads especially now with the improvement of the roads.

As a motorist like all at times I push it a bit but it is always something to bear in mind that their can be an unexpected obstruction in the road at any time. Something simple as truck drivers overloading their trucks and having them uncovered causing chippings to fall on the road can be devastating.

I am concerned though with the manner that so many pedestrians are absolutely complacent and often times careless when crossing or walking along side the roads. It’s like they have no bother in the world while putting their lives at risk. It’s like the only person responsible for their life is the motorist. It’s the responsibility of all road users to safe guard their life. Beware of sitting on steps by the roadside (like in Massacre) or the guard railings like I have noticed some people doing even in areas least expected.

My comments does not specifically relate to this incident however was just a reminder that we all need to be more aware when using the roads and in guarding ourselves in general.

Deepest condolences extended to everyone affected by this tragic incident… As a fellow brother man… I feel the sadness too.

    • My two cents
      March 31, 2012

The pedestrian always has the right of way. Motor cyclists and drivers of vehicles need to be mindful of that at all times.

You are soooo wrong. And that is why things like that happen. Because of our ignorance.

      • sad
        March 31, 2012

yes but tht dont mean they have to take their precious time to cross roads, tht dont mean they have to take the road as their play ground, cuz in d end,u get struck by a vehicle and ur life is forever changed,or worst TAKEN!

      • The Godfada
        March 31, 2012

My two cents ….its seems u are jus a pedestrian and nt a driver….a vehicle is a mechanically machine created by man which can malfunction at anytime….jus as we human minds can go astray….we both hv to used our discretion….my condolences two both families…..

        March 31, 2012

I would have to respectfully disagree with you on pedestrians always having the right of way… If that was the case there would not be pedestrian’s crossing or stop and walk signs (Not Specifically in Dominica). Right of way means nothing when you are dead or cripled, the point is that we guard our lives and try our very best to exersise saftey on the roads.

My heart is more so saddened now knowing the people involved…

Use your senses fool. what if the brakes give way, how can the pedestrian have the right of way when an uncontrolled vehicle gives way and plow into that person?

there should be some kind of communication between driver and pedestrian when crossing. u don’t just cross like a sheep.
