Accident in Portsmouth

An accident near Portsmouth this morning has left at least five persons injured. The accident occurred at One Mile, at around 8:30 this morning, when a bus heading to Portsmouth and carrying 5 persons,  the driver and 4 passengers, collided head-on with a car.

The passenger bus had just overtaken a mid-sized truck, according to the passengers, when the accident took place. The car skidded before hitting the bus, catapulting into a nearby ditch.

All persons involved in the accident were taken to the Portsmouth Hospital, and shortly thereafter the driver of the car and two of the passengers from the bus, a young man and a young lady, were taken by ambulance to the Princess Margaret Hospital.

Despite the extensive damage to both vehicles, there were no fatalities and the other occupants of the bus walked away with minor cuts and bruises.

Is some of the follish passengers that making some of those bus drivers drive so fast. And those drivers so stupid , see them they want to show their passengers thay professional. When you carrying young people, they want you to drive fast or they coming on your bus, well when you come on my bus I driving the safe way, I don’t want to get hurt, and I have a family too. I transported some basket ballers to c certain village and on the way back, you should hear how they criticize me, I driving too slow, 50 M.P.H, they tell me to bus it, 16 guys on the bus, real smart. Some bus drivers need ro re-test or retire. God continue to protect us from foolish drivers.

All drivers overtake especially the young guys when they try to impress their friends to show them that they are professional drivers and it is only when they crash, that everybody talks. Some of us have familiy members who are reckless drivers, but we remain silent, even when they crash, we always see the other driver as the one at fault. LET US FACE THE MUSIC AND SPEAK TO OUR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS who are reckless drivers, EDUCATION begins at home, so let us do what we have to do so that our roads can be safer in Dominica. Remember all driver form the fool on the street at various time, even when it is a small thing that they do wrong. Girlfriends tell your boyfriends o slow down, stop’ saying is so he driving’. When some one gets hurt in an accident it does not show immediately, it takes a few years to show. I am a victim of a head on collision, even when I told my husband to slow down, The other driver kept speeding up then slowing down, but we all have to excercise patience. May God bless us all.

The roads are not the problem. It is the drivers. There have been too many bus accidents. The bus drivers tend to forget that they have passengers on board and their lives are totally indebted to him. when you are taking over another moving vehicle you have to be conscientious of the fact that you are caring passengers. There should be some penalty for that kind of negligence. seriously!!

How is it possible that any lunatic and I do mean lunatic ,in possesion of a Class B drivers license can pick up a Bus. ply a route and suddenly he becomes a Bus Driver. No screening, no examination, be it physical, mental, or physcological to determine the fitness of the individual. This public transportation system is chaoticThe Bus Drivers are the most ill disciplined bunch of people who use the road. They are a law unto themselves, take a look at what goes on at Cork Street & Upper Lane,or opposite Jollys Pahrmacy on King George V street,or that KEEP CLEAR area around Peebles Park on tourist day,or the Grand Bay bus stop on Hanover Street. This chaotic Mish Mash cannot be allowed to continue, we deserve much much more. What we have is chaos masquerading as Public Transporation

As we have all noticed…..being a BUS driver in Dominica has nothing to do with experience……but as long as one is able to get a LOAN…and if one can’t, then what the heck….get a cosigner!!!!!!!…. you can be a BUS driver…the only experence needed is drive……and drive fast good to goooooo…some even drive without insurance….as long as they get their $150….when they drop you off….

      Simple….

    • BELZBOB
      March 27, 2011

Unless I’m mistaken, I think a C class license is required to drive hired and trade vehicles.
Your point is duly noted though that some sort of examination should be put in place to be allowed to become a paid public transportation operator. I also think that Dominica should include a D class license for those intending to drive dumpers, tractors and other heavy machinery. I think there should be a written examination as well as a more comprehensive road test for all the classes of licenses. This examination should include road signs, life and death situations ( for example what procedures should one carry out in case of an accident), road courtesy, speed limits and zones, and I’m sure the Traffic Department officers can come up with much more ideas that I can.
Also, the roads in Dominica need to be better defined. Center lines, speed limits, stop, yield and right of way markings and signs need to be put up clearly. The lack of traffic officers monitoring the roads is also a very serious cause of concern.
I will not go as far as to call Dominica lawless, but it is very law-lacking; and where there are laws they are not very well enforced – especially where the roads are concerned.

      PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHILE DRIVING.

They really need to implement driving speed limit in Dominica. Too many reckless and careless drivers in the country. Some people think that if they don’t drive beyond certain miles per hour they can’t drive or they will not be categorized as one of the popular drivers. Every visit to Dominica gets more scarey for me because of the way people drive in the country. People need to be more considerate to others, not only other drivers but pedestrians as well

    • Arnold

there are “speed limits” but no one really follows them… such as in a village the speed limit is 20mph pretty sure no one drives 20mph in a village…

    March 25, 2011

I have always said, the only time Dominicans are in a hurry is when they are behind the wheel of a car. I have driven in Dominica and really and truly, there is no reason to drive more than 60 kph. The moment you get above that, it is time to slow down for a corner, or a pothole.

This is totally not worth it.

I think the proper authorities need to take a closer look at this matter and seriously consider doing something about those who drive without due care. Bus drivers or drivers on a whole need to be educated about the ROAD RULES. It makes no sense to be in a hurry and still not get to your destination. Common man drivers..buck up and be more responsible.

i do believe we have some reckless bus drivers, they need to be more careful, but do you know that we are more guilty than they? we have the right to ask them to slow down or we get off the bus . it is we who are paying their loans , if we don’t ride they don’t have buses. but we sit down in those buses , shut our mouths and when an accident happen all of talking. we need to take a stand together against that nonesence , and let the quilty drivers know that we have enough.

    • James
      March 25, 2011

That is so true! The pasengers have rights too. I for one DO NOT tolerate loud music, nor excessive speeding on any bus. I prefer to walk ten miles home than end up dead,or in a ditch, mashed up for life. I open my mouth and I tell the driver slow the hell down, I want to get where I am going safely and in one piece. One thing I have noticed too is that if there are young high school kids on the bus, the driver well, some of them blast the music, and speed more, sometimes at the urging of the kids.! Passengers must open their mouths and say slow down or put me down. We have too many dangerous bends, too many precipeses in Dominica to be taking chances with crazy drivers! If the driver realises that the passengers are paying attention to his reckless behaviour, and are speaking up about it he has no choice BUT to check himself and drive with care.

  28. BIGGER MAN
    March 25, 2011

There should be a special clause in the laws to prosecute bus drivers who cause accidents by overtaking. Accidents can and do happen but they can also be prevented. When you decide to be a bus driver and have people’s lives in your hands you need to be cautious. If you are alone in your private vehicle and decide to fly that is your prerogative but when you have other peoples lives in your hands you need to be smart. The law must also make bus drivers be responsible for medical bills of people injured in their stupid accidents.

I have observed that some i must say some bus drivers care less about the people they carry. They are always busy going to St. Lucia and Guadeloupe while their buses are still on Dominican soil. I really don’t understand. The accident this morning should not have happened, a big truck in infront you, you overtaking in a corner? animals you have on board man. The law is jus too slack on those careless drivers. There are times when an accident is unavoidable, and you see the driver tried his best to get out of it. On a stretch like one mile, why? people have family who care about them, and need to take serious action against those bus drivers with those foolish accidents.

  35. Interesting...
    March 25, 2011

Too often we see persons overtaking when they are not able to judge correctly if the road is clear or if the speed of an oncoming vehicle allows them to do so. Up to last night, I had to quickly pull over on the side of the road to make way for a car which was overtaking a vehicle, coming towards me from the opposite direction. I really would not be bothered if the only ones who get hurt or die are the ones who behave so recklessly; but innocent persons get hurt too! We need “highway patrol” these days in Dominica…

    • Truth Seaker!
      March 25, 2011

You know what” There used to be police patrols in the 70’s and early 80’s. You would think that now we have more traffic (vehicular and pedestrian) on the road is now there would be greater police presence. Nah. Think the new Commish of Police has the foresight to set things right? Advise government on a new traffic ordinance – especially with the road improvements taking place island-wide?

Funny how we always the cart before the horse in our little DA. At least, government should be contemplating and developing new guidelines for road useage in tandem with these major works occuring, so as to make it safer to traffic our roads.

As for the bus drivers, that’s why I do not take public transportation in DA. I drive myself as cautious as I can. These guys drive as if they on a race track, with people’s lives hanging in the balance. Thing is, if you say anything, even the folks whose lives is in danger criticize you and take up for THEIR bus driver. Go figure!

i was just reading thru the comments and yours is the first expressing concern for those who were injured. thanks. everybody else was traffic officers ,police, judge and jury about the bus drivers. the fact is accidents can be prevented, but good lord, they happen, and to anybody! my prayers go out to those injured and to their families. also to the drivers, because although negligent at times, they suffer the most.
