REVISED: Accident on Castle Bruce stretch

Dominica News Online has received information that there was a motor vehicle accident on the Castle Bruce stretch last evening at approximately 6:30pm.

According to police reports, the incident occurred when two vehicles, a four-wheel-drive Toyota pick-up, PK911, and a double-cab two-wheel-drive Nissan pick-up, 9852, collided on of the bridged section of the stretch.

Bernard Laurent, 57, a passenger in the back of the Toyota Pick-up, also known as ‘Sweet Daddy’, was thrown from it into the river and the vehicle landed on him.

Laurent managed to survive with a broken hand and a deep laceration behind his left ear. He is now at the Alford Ward at the Princess Margret Hospital recuperating.

Neither driver was seriously injured in the accident. The driver of the Nissan pick-up left the scene of the accident, but subsequently returned.

The Castle Bruce Police are currently carrying out investigations into the matter.

Dominica News Online will bring more information as it becomes available.

The driver left the scene of the accident and returned, for what and for what reason? Mention was not made that he went to get help for his injured passenger. I hope he did. Otherwise he should be charged for leaving the scene of the accident. It is a serious matter and against the Law, in any country that we reside in.
In most cases drivers always get away unscathed. Passengers get the brunt of injuries and if they are fortunate to be live.
Once again, it appears that reckless driving was involved in this collision. They impacted head on. This is another traffic violation. Those drivers should be charged.
When are some of those drivers going to learn to drive safely and on those roads that are narrow and steep?
I feel sorry for the man who was injured. Fortunate for him he is alive. He is suffering. Pain hurts. If he is employed while he recuperates he will not be able to earn a living. If he has a family to support he will obviously not be able to do so. Someone has to pay him for this.
I pray and hope that in time he will recover from his injuries. May God assist him.

the driver did come back, unlike the bath estate lady who did not,but turned hersef in with her lawyer.the poor man from that accident died.why blame foreign drivers just because u had and unfortunate encounter with one.20 years ago i almost met my maker on that very same bridge.the driver was trying to get across before the other one.
i know what being crushed alive felt.
thank God everyone’s ok and it did not turn tragic like that bus from marigot.

    speedy recovery to all involved.

Better traffic safety signs and warnings, and CCTV cameras in the more accident prone areas to help the police with vigilance in these areas and discourage drivers from being reckless on the roads. sterner traffic laws and penalization of those who run foul with the law may also act as a deterrent to dangerous drivers, also road safety campaigns put some nice big billboards (like the ones with Skerrit face that we saw around elections) in strategic locations along our road network, with graphic reminders of the consequences of dangerous driving and “wear your seatbelt” reminders, a little education and a strict legal system can go a long way in helping prevent accidents.

For God’s sake, this is an accident and not a political situation! This is a NO! NO! Why the reference to the Prime Minister?
Even though your heart possesses hatred for the PM for whatever reason which you should not, except that you do not support him and I am certain that he did you no wrong, there is absolutely no reason and is unnecessary for you to mention the Prime Minister’s name in your response of this article. It is uncalled for and highly disrespectful and rude of you.
Keep in mind, STICK TO THE ISSUE!
Always put yourself in the other person’s shoes/position. If it were you, would you like someone to lambaste you and speak ill of you, making sarcastic comments to you, your mother, father and other members of your family specifically when the situation does not call for it and on this Website? Put on your basic common sense and your thinking cap if you have any.
Offer comments for improving Dominica, decreasing accidents and how well you, too, can serve Dominica to make it a happier, peaceful and safe place to reside in. This is what God requires of you and others.
Be fair and just. If you do not support a certain Party, politician or the Prime Minister, there is no need to criticize him and utilize derogatory language about him and on a Website.
You need to learn love, consideration and tolerance. Learn to comment educationally that others might learn something from you. You have much to learn.
I Have my preference for a political Party and PM. I will not lambaste one whom I oppose in the Media especially when the circumstance does not call for it. You are just stirring up trouble.
How loving, happy and peaceful are you?
There are some comments as yours which do not apply to the article and which should be disallowed on DNO.
I urge you, if you are a Christian, a practicing one, to conform your will to that of God, namely His Ten Commandments and loving one another. This is a condition for living a relatively happy and peaceful lifestyle and obtaining God’s compassion, mercy, forgiveness and subsequently obtaining His Heavenly Kingdom. How Christian-like are you?
St. Vincent de Paul said: “Be kind! Be kind! And you will be a saint.”
This is one to be practiced and to live by while on earth and not when you may be sick and dying. It may be too late. Your heart, mind and soul need to be transformed to the image and likeness of God.

Am not suprise if is a medical student from all saints university dat do dat, because i was a victim of that just around the easter there ; a alsaints university student hit me and run but luckily for me i was able to see the vehicle colour, the make and the name of the rental agency so i was able to trace him and up till now he refuses to accept his liability; the matter is now in the courts. I say all that to say people must be very careful at nights with those crazy foreign drivers, they specializes in hit and run

I am sorry to hear about your accident and I hope justice is served but you cannot go around blindly putting a name to this! I am a student at All saints and I am offended by this accusation!!! Stop trying to give my school a bad name!

so is hit and run now….that person obviously maybe did not have drivers liscence or something for that person to see that type of accident he or her caused and fled the scene… no eye witnesses nothing, that person could have been dead the vehicle landed on him… what are we doing in this place the police need to not only put their efforts in drugs, but in everything, we need our laws enforced in Dominica..

i have already said i am giving Dominica 3 more years and the new road and we will see we will soon be called TI GWADA!!!

the way we moving, is right in that direction!!!!

these are just simple accidents that could be avoided if we systematically upgrade our road networks…I’m disgusted at these one lane bridges in this year 2011!!

yout, you couldnt have said it better, one lane bridges on two way roads, so ridiculous

        May 24, 2011

even on the six lanes bridges there are still accidents, my point, people should be careful when they drive.be conscious of their lives and the lives of others.

    • dash
      May 24, 2011

i already said the bridge on the stretch is to narrow only one vehicle can pass that does not make since the road is twice the size of the bridge i seen these accident happen before because both drivers believe that they can reach the bridge before each other with high speed we need a wide bridge what is johnno parl rep doing about that the next level we want it seems that govt is building bridge all over but they forget east coast like rosalie and castle bruce bridge what is ivor stepehson doing about the rosalie bridge each time it rain river overflows the bridge
