American cruise visitor dies in Dominica

The police in Dominica say they are conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of an American visitor to the island.

The man, identified as Mark H Mark, arrived on the island on a cruise ship on Monday, January 14 with his wife.

According to Police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, the 68-year-old man of Missouri, USA went river tubing on the Pagua River at about 11:00 am.

While tubing he complained to a tour guide that he was not feeling well and he was given immediate attention.

It is reported that on the way to the Marigot Hospital Mark became unresponsive and he was pronounced dead upon arrival by a medical practioner.

The body was then transported to the Princess Margaret Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

A corona’s inquest will be convened, Inspector Carbon said.

A number of visitors have died tragically in Dominica in recent times. Jim Caves died on Wednesday December 19th, 2012 following complications while snorkeling at Champagne and and 22-year-old Casey Shulman died from injuries received from a propeller during a boating incident at Mero Beach on December 1, 2012.

My profound condolences to the families of the tourists who died on the Island of Dominica. My deepest sorry is extended to you for your loss.May the souls of your dear ones rest in peace. My fellow Dominicans specifically to those of you who live abroad, the only way to guarantee that no one tourist or otherwise dies in Dominica is for no human-being to be in Dominica. Please be of the knowledge that death is apart of life.most certainly, death is unavoidable. As long as one is alive one will have to die.As a matter of fact death is a natural process of life.It is known where every human-being on this earth is born.In most if not all of the cases no one is pecisely sure where any human-being will die.Could those of you who claim to be so medically and legally astute please be patient and wait when you die to file as many lawsuits and train as many tour guides as you possible can because of your deaths. Be critical of Dominica and Dominicans as much as you can;nonetheless;remember you are in a foriegn country. That which occured with the tourist in Dominica happens all over the globe every-day.

if you follow the other Caribbean news sites you will notice that this accidents with the tourists does not only happen in Dominica lately…. i honestly believe these people have whatever medical condition they come to the caribbean to enjoy there last days, they withhold there medical information from the tour guides and then they end up getting into trouble…. having someone else be blamed for their death…. just giving my two cents

The question is, how many of our tour guides are trained in CPR? simplest thing someone complained of not feeling well hook up SOME OXYGEN ASAP GET VITALS ON THE PT. Dominica is going nowhere in a hurry , reason, our SO CALLED PROFESSIONALS ARE NOT TRAINED!!!! NO one knows what caused his death but sometime death can be averted IF someone around knows what to do.

You have made a very plausible remark. I admire your foresight. But you already have 7 thumbs down, a clear example “we are good” just the way we are. Example: I watched while a woman fell ill with a seizure at the cultural gala last year, it took 20 minutes for a half drunk fireman to travel one mile (from fire station to the botanic gardens, show up empty handed, threw the woman on a bus with flashing lights, and drive away. Zero Oxygen, breathing apparatus, to keep that woman alive on the way to the hospital. Which reminds me, Dominica is one heck of a backward, third world, negative country in a class by itself.

      January 16, 2013

Just so you known before Discover Dominica issue any ID to tour guides which is mandatory to have, there is a training and certification that must be done. It is done at the State college with professionals and trained medics. You all are too dam fast to put down the country and industry, it may not be perfect but some individuals try their best to make it enjoyable for both locals and foreigners.

There are people with unknown or known medical conditions which contribute to their death, with the exception of Casey, it appears one can safely assume or conclude that underlying medical conditions contributed the deaths of the other visitors; albeit sad and tragic one can be comforted in the fact that these people died doing something they loved. I have never been tubing in Dominica but I know that whenever I participate in such activities I must always sign a disclaimer stating that I am healthy and that there are no medical conditions prohibiting me from participating, and acknowledging the dangers and clearing the operating organization of any liability. Again, it is unfortunate and probably further training in CPR and other life saving procedures necessary, however coincidence is not causation. The deaths were not caused by the island, if the tourists went to Antigua of Hawaii and it was their appointed time then is would happen there. So honor the visitors who were fortunate to take their last breaths in Paradise doing what they loved

The individuals who mentioned about CPR have made a very important point. I do believe that everyone who works in the tourism industry should be trained in delivery basic CPR. It saves lives.
If it were a cardiac arrest in the setting of acute myocardial infarction(heart attack), CPR from a trained personel would surely help. Moreover, AED(Automated External Defibrillators)need to be placed in these areas; including Airports, churches, schools, and in all health care facilities.

Are you Dominican’s seriously complaining about the last paragraph? Last time I checked the title of this page said DOMINICA NEWS ONLINE not DOMINICA TOURISM ONLINE. They’re not here to sell the country, they’re here to report the news. This is a news site, not a blog. And guess what?! There’s going to be good news & bad news. If they hadn’t mentioned the other incidents I would have thought that was bad reporting on their part. We can’t pick & choose what we want to hear. These are facts & any sound minded person would recognize its inclusion to the story.

    January 15, 2013

In the additional cases mentioned in DNO’s last paragraph, one died of an accident another died of natural causes apparently. Concerned people that we are is causing us to hyperventillate about it and blame everything Dominican, if not DNO’s reporting then the tour guiding.

While we must as fellow human beings feel sad about these occurances and sympathise with families of the deceased, we must also ask ourselves the following questions:
How often do tourists die on cruises?
Is there an age above which we should just say no to tourists wanting to visit our natural sites? What is the state of health of some of the people who pay their money demanding the services we have to offer?
Oh, throw in this one also: How often does a visitor refuse to take local advice, because they are experienced world travellers who have “been there and done that” before?
And again: Do Dominicans die when they go overseas? If not, why not?

    • joan
      January 15, 2013

not only that, if u tell a tourist that they are not fit to do a tour, they cry discrimination, some want to go cycling and have not cycled in 25 years, others want to go river tubing and are not fit, in fact they have high cholestrol just bordering on a heart attack and lots of other things, damned if u do, damned if u dont.

Thanks DNO for highlighting the number of deaths in the Dominican waters. This will surely boost tourist arrivals on the island. After all.. you do have enviable white sand beaches and top five star hotels and resorts which people all over the world desire to come and experience.

Its wonderful despite the fact that Dominica does not have to date an international airport.

Keep up the good work of publishing news, which by the way, could be accessed on the WORLD WIDE WEB!.

    • January 16, 2013

real talk this is dumb its like this person want to see the place fall even more dummy

    • Tom
      January 16, 2013

The listed fatalities are not going to in anyway stop tourism.

Dominica does not need an international airport. In fact, it goes against the island to hand a large airport (pollution, noise and environmental impact being just a few of the reasons).

The region has a number of gateway airports (Sint Maarten, Barbados). What is needed is cheaper connecting flights between Dominica and these hubs.

You fail to understand the true value of Dominica. You are absolutely right – No 5 star hotels. There are plenty of them in cities around the world. You can go there and watch the Opera or visit the Museum whilst you suck in the pollution created by millions of inhabitants filling the same space. Some people desire the need to get away from all this noise and congestion – This is the true value in what Dominica has to offer.

Some Dominicans are so ashamed of their birth place that when they introduce themselves they say they are from Barbados, Bahamas, St. Croix, St. Thomas, even Tortola where crime is huge; some say when people ask where is Dominica they do not want to take the time to explain or describe, they rather promote another Island. I am PROUD to be a Dominican, yes, I live in America but my home will ALWAYS be DOMINICA. I have no problems telling where the Island is located, and oh, what a beautiful Island it is.

      January 16, 2013

You must realise that the tourist who die here, are not dying out of criminal activity but usually by explainable natural causes or accidents which could occur anywhere.

If DNO begins to censor news as you are implying, then it will no longer news but propaganda. Without the DNO giving a factual report on the circumstantial Dominica runs the risks of the tourists(friends/family) doing their own reporting which could be heavily skewed and emotional. Thus it is better having DNO give a definitive take as they are doing now.

  19. Anonymous
    January 15, 2013

Those people that believe that publicizing these incidents would only serve to hurt the tourism industry in Dominica are being very foolish. There is absolutely nothing wrong with full disclosure. As a matter of fact, Dominica has a responsiblity to let tourists know what they’re getting into. For those people that are physically fit and can handle strenous activity, a disclosure will not stop them, if anything it will challenge them. But for those who are not physically fit or have never experienced Dominica’s natural resources before, atleast it will warn them. It is always better for you to define yourself, than to have others define you.

CPR or any kind of medical attention can not and will not prevent death. This gentleman apparently was not feeling well, no one knows what he was feeling. DEATH is EVERYWHERE, and it comes at any given time. We do not have to be old nor sick to die. We should say R.I.P. and sympathize with his family and the families of all those who have encountered death on our Island. People die in-flight, on land, at sea. This is one thing we can not avoid nor prevent.

You people are pathetic! You all are so damn hard to please. I get on DNO for what I perceive as selective sensoring, but I think in my view this piece of article is great reporting and this outburst on DNO is unwarranted.

When I first saw the heading, the first thing that came to mind was that DNO was giving an update on one of the recent incidents, which were both very vague in my mind, even if they both appeared to have taken place recently.

So thank you DNO for the refresher, excellent reporting.

    January 15, 2013

It is very unfortunate that these visitors called it a day in Domininica. In the case of Mark, most likely he may have had health concerns in the USA but somehow he had to get to Dominica to die. As part of the investigation, it would be good for authorities to check his health record in the US.
To all our visitors, Dominica is not the land of death but land of life. Infact it has been referred to by many tourists as the ‘garden of Eden.’ I guess now the old blood of our corrupt and immoral leaders entered in and contaminated the air and it’s effect is not only felt and seen amongst our local people but visitors as well. Hate me if you guys choose to but but we must really ask ourselves some questions since this is the first time in our history we are hearing of these types of crimes and death of visitors. Something is pollutting the air! We need all those who lead us in any capacity to be married, be faithful to their one spouse, be honest, and stay from corruption. These things are hurting us, our leaders.

    • Still
      January 15, 2013

You are a very confused individual. First you say that he probably had health issues in the US then right after you blame the leaders of the country. It seems like those opposing the government always seem to have conflicting opinions and that makes it easy for the government to get away. So next time choose your angle and stick to it.

      • amh
        January 15, 2013

i agree. all putting government in their story like is the worst set of ppl. everybody dont have to know you supporting the oppostion side. leave that for election day

    • Me Day BAR
      January 15, 2013

Still, you the one that’s confused. Let me try to unconfuse you and others. I made it very clear that the man maybe had his health problem in the US and I suggested that the authorities here should seek his medical record. I did not blame it on the government. However, the point I am making is, in recent times, especially since the death of Piere Charles, we have been experiencing some strange things in DA. Never have I heard of visitors just perishing in Da like that. Never have I heard of brutal murders (mummy killing children) in DA like now. Needless to talk about gang related murders and Domininicans murdered abroad like in recent times.
My point is, though we might know what caused the death of an individual such as the visitor, we would be making a mistake not to ask ourselves why in Dominica again? You see, My point is, though doctors may conclude that the cause of death is cancer or HBP, Rom. 5:12 sees SIN as the root cause of death. Furthermore, In Joshua 7, it was very clear that the Israelites were being killed by enemy fire. But you see, it was not until Joshua sort the Lord he found out that Achan was the real cause.
It is in this light I am calling on our leaders to examin themselves because our lifestyle may very be the reason why a week cannot go bye without hearing some strange news in DA. Those who lead us cannot be living in open fonication, adutary, running their pipe all over, corrupt, and yet claim to be God fearing by so-called spiritual leaders. It was not too long these same religious and political leaders dedicated the country to God according to them, but their ungodly lifestyle was never dedicated.
So to all of you who think I am just being political (though I don’t support this government neither am I in love with UWP) the fact is, we must be honest else the wrath of nature will hunt us. When you are investigating a matter you must identify first signs and and ask questions like, since when it started? As I investigate what’s been happening in DA, I realize that prior to 2000 we never had these sort of things happening in Dominica. They all started around 2005 so ask yourself some questions.

      • still
        January 16, 2013

Are you really saying that prior to 2005 we had n osuch things happening no murders drugs or guns?
Now i enjoy bible quoting there is one if i remember about judging lest ye be judged. what facts do you have to back up your comments about peoples lifestyles. my theory is unless you were there or 1the person admitted to you then you do not know. you only believe. the politicians are not the ones destroying the country we all are. we put them there we are the ones who can take them out. 1but we need to wait our time. so next time try to leave politics out of what started as a wonderful comment. oh and i despise all politicians.

Good morning my people. First, I want to offer my condolence to the family of Mr Mark for the lost of their love one. Now I suspect that Mr Mark went into cardiac arrest and CPR could not have helped him. We must remember that many of the older visitors are not in the best physical shape and they have many different medical conditions. The Tourism Misinter or Discovery Dominica must produce an instrumental video which every tour guide should play for their clients before they take part in such strenuous activities. Those kind of events are not good for our country and the tourism industry.

Don’t ask this too loud. You will be severely castigated. It is just one of those things. So no one bothers to investigate. Everything just Irie, is old age that causing that. See beauty and die.

the man is 68 years old right. All that excitement maybe give the poor man a heart attack or something. this was not an accident this was a medical issue. some people too quick to blame others. This could have happened to any old person. the last paragraph was uncalled for. trying to make our country look like a death trap smh.

  35. Sammy
    January 15, 2013

Oh Dominicans! keep explaining tourist death on the island and it will be great for statistics and tourists returning. It’s OK, do not take any measures and say it pure accidental and not anyone faults. It’s Ok,we looking good. It will be just great when the powers that be go to Miami to request for ships to arrive. Just nice. It will add to our credibility.

Ok, No one is saying that these deaths are not pure accidental and coincidental, however, it does not look good for our country, so we have to beef up and take measures so we can defend our Island.

What are the training given to Paralegals?

What are some places that tourists should avoid?

What notices are given to tourist when they are on Island? for example, if you go to Disney World there are signs upon signs warning that if you have medical conditions such as heart disease, High blood Pressure etc, you should avoid the rides.

Are the hospitals equipped to deal with emergencies such as these?

When a tourist come to our beautiful shores, they are captivated by the trees, the seas and all between. They do not always exercise common sense. It is almost as if they are like little children who enter a candy store. It is us, who have to be wiser and more mature to know how to guide them.

When a tourist comes to our shore, they think that we are a sensible nation who has taken precautionary measures already so they let their guards down. If we are not prepared to take those measures, simply let them know that we go au natural, therefore, please take all safety and precautionary measures on their own. It is either we think for them or tell them to think for themselves, and don’t let their guards down.

Now we Dominicans tend to get defensive, we fail to listen to common sense, we don’t take heed, we keep going and going, unless something drastic happens. I am sure that sooner or later, there is gong to be a report of number of tourist deaths on island in a short period of time. and regardless of the reasons it will not be good for our tourist industry.

What’s your point? Do you know how many tourists fall into the Niagara River despite the fully visible warning signs and barricades? Tourists have to exercise caution and know their limits. Like one writer so intelligently stated, this gentleman appears to have gone into cardiac arrest & no amount of CPR & First Aid could have saved his life given he was not in an ER room at the time. Even in such cases, the survival rate is 5% with a great chance the indiviual may suffer permanent brain damage. So get real!

        January 15, 2013

Get real! so because it happens elsewhere, we in our little Dominica must not take measures. Your little minds is your own enemy. We in Dominica should be better able to do a better job. This is a bad trend that i see in Dominica, everytime something happens, we quick to compare with other places. That is an act of defense and incompetence. We need to act as if this is the only place it happens and be swift to take measures to bring change. Niagara falls do not need 2 little ships to sustain its economy. Get Real!

    • January 15, 2013

Do you read the news on other sites? Tourists die, accidental or not, on every Island or Continent. This happens everywhere, duh. How is telling about what happened then and now going to affect the Tourist Industry?

      @magwa sa.
What you mentioned is happening because we are all living in the 21st century (the age of aquarius.

You may not be old enough to remember this, but my mother swears that a few decades ago when a body was being taken to the church or cemetary shopkeepers used to close the door of their shops, so rare was a death.

Now funerals pass and nobody even looks because it happens so often. This is the 21st century experience.

It it sad that people have to meet their fate on a vacation. It must be devastating for the family to deal with that in a foreign country.

The problem is not with Dominica. Americans are some of the most unhealthy people in the world. They don’t eat healthy diets, are typically overweight and are potential cardiac timebombs ready to explode. Combine that with sudden vigorous activity and this is a recipe for heart attacks. They die all the time shoveling snow in the States. No suprise here. If it did not happen in Dominica, it would have happened after he returned home. This was a pre-existing medical condition.

    • Anonymous
      January 16, 2013

Ok we will just put a sign up saying unhealthy fatties are not welcome. That should do the trick.

  41. January 15, 2013

That is very Irresponsible journalism imo
You want to put your country in good light but you trying to imply that coming to dominica may be a death sentence by reminding everyone of all the deaths that have happened… People have been visiting Dominica for years and if 50 died in 10 years that’s alot so stop that nonsense. It’s everyone’s responsibility to keep Dominica in good light and not stain our country’s name with irresponsible Journalism

you don’t have to hide anything however you don’t see American news reporting on the thousands of women and children that dieing through drone attacks and bombings. You don’t see America Advertising all the shootings that happen on a daily basis. You don’t see any country doing that it’s reported on as a footnote not a main article. The articles Last Paragraph is the problem and not the report in it’s entirety

The last paragraph paints the picture that tourists die in Dominica quite often when in fact it’s a rarity in general. Not to mention the fact that the majority of the cases are most likely due to pre-existing medical conditions. If Dominica was at fault I’m absolutely certain we would be facing a few lawsuits.

    • January 15, 2013

I think the negative posts are more likely to tarnish the minds of those wanting to visit the Island. We all have to play our part in promoting the Island’s beauty. Tourists go to Iran, Iraq, Parkestan, Nigeria, all of the Asian and European countries, not all make it back alive. Couples go on honeymoon in Italy, Spain, the Caribbean, you name it, not all make it back alive. Students go to Aruba, St. Marten and elsewhere, not all make it back alive. I guess you and others like you only read DNO news and not listening to WORLD NEWS. Dominica’s Tourism Industry will survive with or without your support. Heard of what happened in Antigua and Guadeloupe recently? It happened to Dominicans and what happened was NOT accidental. GO FIGURE! STOP BLAMING DOMINICA AND ITS PEOPLE.

There is nothing so unusual about this – while a death, especially under those circumstances is always tragic, it is understandable that with the increase in tourist visits to the island, such incidents will increase. I am a frequent traveller myself and before embarking on such day tours/expeditions, you are warned of the level of fitness required to participate and in most cases have to sign a waiver of liability. Some people ignore that & take a chance only to suffer dire consequences.
I truly hope the media and Dominicans at large understand this and do not make more of it than is necessary. The last thing Dominica needs now is negative publicity in the tourism industry.

Sad news… We really need to pay attention to this. Why are so many of our tourist dying here.I believe the tour guides should be asking questions about their health etc, before getting these people in our waters because this increase in death in tourist can cripple our not so blooming industry
