The Management and staff of the Anchorage Hotel have added their voices to those expressing profound sadness over the December 1st accident off the Mero beach which claimed the life of an American student.
Casey Schulman who was a client on the MV Explorer, was a guest on a Catamaran Sail & Snorkel Party Cruise. The catamaran is owned by Anchorage Hotel.
Shulman, a student of the University of Virginia, was killed in the sea off the coast of Mero on Saturday when she was struck by the boat’s propeller. Schulman sustained injuries and was pronounced dead on her arrival at the Princess Margaret Hospital.
In their release, the Hotel said that they were saddened by the incident but pointed out that all safety procedures were followed.
‘We are deeply saddened by the fact this accident occurred notwithstanding that all standard operating and safety procedures were being employed by the Captain and Crew of the Yacht Passion’.
According to th release, in the forty (40) years of its operations, the Anchorage Hotel, Whale Watch & Dive Centre has maintained an excellent accident-free record. The Directors, Management and Staff of the Anchorage Hotel, Whale Watch and Dive Centre are greatly saddened by this incident and extend heartfelt sympathy to the family and loved ones of Ms Casey Schulman.
Meantime President of the Mero Enhancement Committee, Josephine Dublin Prince, has commended the community of Mero for their quick response in assisting the young lady and on behalf of the Committee expressed their condolences to family and friends.
“I want to commend the people of Mero in their assistance in getting a small fishing boat and life guard equipment to tow the late Casey Shulman’s body out of the water. They were already equipped with a first aid kit but the ambulance service was already there”Prince stated.
As someone who personally knew Casey and was fortunate enough to meet her, I really think its most disrespectful to make it sound like it was her fault. If it was or wasn’t a life is lost and a family will never be the same. Obviously Anchorage needs to reevaluate their safety precautions.
I trust our competent investigators followed protocol as the pathologist would have undoubtedly done in conducting toxicology tests(Canabinoids/alcohol/cocanoids…etc) on the captain and crew.
After all it would be unfair and unjust to have done so on the victim only especially as persons are already suggesting…it was the victims fault.
Sorry for the typo.
What i meant was that the pathologist would have had to follow protocol by doing toxicology studies on the victim. As such would not the police investigators also be mandated to follow protocol by conducting toxicology studies on the captain and crew in an attempt to determine contributing factors which may have caused her death?
it should be noted that the letter from the students ship did not refer to it as an ACCIDENT.
ALSO WHILE WE DO NOT HAVE THIS ACTUAL PRESS RELEASE…THIS GIVES THE IMPRESSION OF ARROGANCE WHICH MAY BE CONTRIBUTING TO MANY CASTING BLAME ON THE VICTIM.
MY SYMPATHIES GO OUT, TO THE SCHULMAN FAMILY.S
very pretty girl.by the photo she looked like shae had a calm spirit. SO SADD
She did have a calm spirit. I was very fortunate to have known Casey and she was absolutely the most wonderful, beautiful person I have ever met.
Negilence on the part of the Crew(The crew is not to be blamed the hotel is strongly at fault). The Anchorage Hotel is the cause of this young lady’s death and they will do their best to cover it up.
I agree! Shamful investigators…
My daughter was on the snorkel trip with Casey, but was on the beach when the tragic accident happened.
As I said before our hearts are breaking for Casey, The Shulman Family and all the semester at sea students.
I would like us ALL to let The Shulman Family lay Casey to rest in peace!!
What we can do to help is advocate for mandated propeller guards on ALL vessels in all countries!! No excuses!!! All vessels should have them just as cars are mandated to have seat belts!!
Anchorage Hotel I am asking you to lead the charge and get these installed on all your vessels before you take anyone out again and send us all a picture as proof!
Together we can make a difference by using our voices to mandate change!
And head count!
i dont believe the family of the young lady deserve just a “we are sorry”. a life of a young lady was taken. Anchorage, you better come up with some form of compensation.
Americans?trust me it aint going down as “we are sorry” and i dont blame them.
I personally feel, like when GOD say’s its that time its that time, sorry for the families lost, but saying “America is coming for you is wrong” they are running a ligament business, and accidents happen just because she was an American does not make it any different, the fact that she was a human being is what should be looked at, if you don’t have facts, be quiet. I was born and raised in America from two Puerto Rician, Americans, and I am going to say one thing I hate when they put America in such a high pedestal, as if Dominica’s people don’t count at all, like they are beneath us. I traveled there five times and was treated with the up most respect, from hotels, to the people, to other businesses, and would do it again. Stop thinking lawsuit, no money will ever bring her back and sure not the families happiness a lost is a lost is a lost remember That. I could never enjoy money from a dead child, I probably donated it to the needy.
“GOD” didn’t say it was time. A boat operator put the boat in reverse without making sure his path was clear of swimmers.
safety procedures or not accidents do happen. sympathy to the family involved
Mr. Wyattspoppa the expert.
Have you ever landed on an aircraft and its announce “for your safety and others please remain seated untill the aircraft comes to a complete stop, but some people still stand and pull bags from overhead and it falls on you?”.
In your so called boating days and mine its a common practice for people to jump off before the boat comes to a complete stop especially young people.
Even though a boat engine is working or idleing the propeller will not spin unless unless its put in gear and then you would be ready to move with your passengers.
If your in the water by a boats engine Idleing would you stay by it?
According to what you said the engine can suck you in. No way can that happen unless your thinking of a jet engine.
There are safety procedures some people ignor.
I have known this boating opperation for many many years years and they are very methodical and strict when comes to boating and no way he would do something so foolish or stupid which you try to indicate.
Your mention of jacque Couster and your other vulgar expression only indicates the individual you are.
I don’t think all safety precut ion was taken
Crusie shoper
you don’t have to be drunk to fall off a boat while it is turning…you just need to be standing without holding unto something …..or sitting
Well i heard that she was drunk and fell off the boat while the captain was turning soooooo safety procedures could have taken place, but she was too drunk to notice
You are an idiot. I don’t know where you “heard” your information, but from actually knowing Casey and getting a response from a friend with her at the time, that is not at all what happened. Don’t comment on things when your sources are a bunch of crappy websites.
You are an idiot.
sorry i meant a big thumbs down to your comment.since i’m writhing it lets make that a double
I am not sure that all operating and safety procedures were in place. Some body failed somewhere in their duty.
Accidents do happen…
Is that how we Dominicans behave. We should be there to support the Armour family instead of cryng “lawsuits.” These people have been doing this business for years. It is very unfortunate I understand but why do we have to behave this this? Aferall, they are our countrypeople.
Lets behave like humans Dominicans!!!!!!!
Then how did this happen ? Please explain.
I know right….
I just explained.read my comment.
“All safety procedures were followed”
my horses rear end! No pilot/captain worth spit would start his engines without a written confirmed all-hands on board. My family, friends and I have been on more dives than Jaques Cousteau, if the proper safety procedures were followed, she’d be alive today. Any idea how close to a propeller you have to be to get sucked up by it on a small chartered boat? Pretty damn close. God rest her soul and may her family find peace after they demand an investigation.
They were not on a dive. They were anchored at the beach in Mero. Some passengers were on the beach, some were in the water some went exploring the village. They were all still relaxing and enjoying so a head count was not possible.
Wyatts, I quite agree with you, If proper sfty guidlines were folowed, How did the accident happened? No one is saying how the accident happened, Unless she jumped in the water at the back of the vessel or she fell over real quich without no one seeing. Which I hope is not the case. to me just sying “All safety guidlines were followed, seems to be blaiming the victim for not following proper safety guidlines. Fort Youbg Hotel If youe Captaine and crew followed all propwer safety guidlines, thn who did not follow the guidlines resulting the the accident. Accidents are normal, but if all guidlines and protocols wer folowed by the Captain, Who is speaking for the Victim?… Im confused.
Please be careful of what you type – Fort Young has nothing to do with this
Please be corrected, it’s Anchorage Hotel, not the Fort Young Hotel
Think before you speak. if the boat was going astern and she jumped, or she fell, or someone pushed her over at the back of the boat, at that close proximity to the propeller there is not enough time to prevent an accident, you should know that when a boat is going astern the propeller attracts objects towards it from the back compared to it going forward it pushes objects away from the back.
Be prepared for “Lawsuits”
Be prepared for “Lawsuits” whomever is responsible.
So sad! Support to Anchorage and to the family of the deceased! Terrible unfortunate accident.
Not trying to be negativity – but this should have read support to the family of the deceased, adn Anchorage staff. Because in reality, it’s the family who is really suffering and they should be given deference.
typical l wonder how you would feel if it was your family
Be ready Anchorage, America might be coming at you. Got to have damn good explanation for this one.
All safety procedures were followed’ hmmmm.
this was so sad!
i am hoping we do like the americans……keep all the families of the ppl lost on the island through accidents etc, tourism accidents or others, once they are foreign in a sympathy pool…and regularly touch base with them being kind and showing our care!
just saying…a protocol could be develop! which ministry and a selected person to carryout that duty/task…
call the position…”sympathy protocol officer”
really ???? if all standard operating and safety procedures were being followed Casey would not be dead.
Very true. I have seen so many things happen on the island that should not have, due to lax attitude and not following standards.
Absolutely!
We are all devastated for Casey, The Shulman Family and all who loved and cared for Casey, especially the semester at sea students.
It is really sad, I think some grill like device should be made and place around the propellers of boats travelling in swimming areas to prevent such accidents from happening in the future.
It’s a sad day for this family to lose a child.
