UPDATED: Laudat landslide throws pickup over cliff

Efforts underway to clear the debris.

The bus driver, who discovered two men injured from a landslide at Laudat said he heard screaming from a distance; however, he ignored it initially.

“I could hear somebody screaming from a distance. I didn’t take that for nothing, because I thought it was the people living higher up … I thought it was they that was talking and laughing,” the man, who chose to remain anonymous told a Dominica News Online reporter.

Another Laudat resident had transported the injured parties to the Accident and Emergency Department at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) last evening, after they jumped out of a vehicle to save themselves from the landslide.

Relaying the information, the bus driver told DNO that the pickup’s driver said he noticed falling stones while driving, and attempted to accelerate to make it across, before the bulk of debris came down. However, the wheels of the vehicle began skidding and that slowed it down. The landslide swept the pickup down a precipice; but the driver and another man made good their escape.

The incident occurred sometime after 6 p.m.

“I saw a guy coming down the road, coming down from the debris. When he came to me he tell me ‘boy Reds is me you know. As I was going up the road I see some stones falling so I thought I could have make it on time.’

“He tell me the thing just swap him down and send him in the cliff …  he and another guy,” the

Laudat bus driver explained.

According to reports, the passenger on the pickup received a broken leg.

“boy “Reds” is me you know.”

So now we know that the anonymous bus driver name is Reds….Anonymous (LOL)

I hope the escaped ones are doing well all the same. This landslide could also have to do with bad contouring if there were road works going on in that area…..
