UPDATE: Man dies in Mahaut accident

Brent Louis

One man is reported to have died and another seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident which occurred in Mahaut late Thursday afternoon.

The police say the accident occurred at about 2:45 p.m. when motorcyclist Brent Louis, 33, lost control of his motorcycle and collided with a truck belonging to DOWASCO.

Louis was traveling in a northerly direction along the E.O. Leblanc Highway while the truck was traveling in a southerly direction, the police say.

He was pronounced dead at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

This is the second accident involving a motorcycle in less than few days. On Wednesday another man was seriously injured when his motorcycle ran into a bus near the Fond Cole bus stop.

It is so heart breaking to hear that Brent has passed away. I met him during Creole Festival and he showed me an amazing time and was a gentleman in every aspect of the word. Regardless of how he was driving, or if he had on his protective gear…no one deserves to die. He is a human with relatives and friends that valued his life, just as many of you value those in your life. I pray that he RESTS IN ABSOLUTE PEACE and that all his loved ones can make it through this time and remember him for all that was great about him and not for anything neative. After all, we are all humans and should have compassion for one another. He will be truly missed by me for sure. RIP Brent and someday I will see you again.

it looks like everytime something happen in dominica we blame the police. well i think i have the solution to that. if thats the case then i think that the Chief of Police should assign a police officer to every Dominican in so doing a policeman can be at the scene of every incident when it happens and every dominican will be happy. PROBLEM SOLVED.

Helmets save lives end off story all the people on here who say that with or without you still die we know that but its helps save lives. A lot off us travel and abide by the rules in other countries where helmets is a must. Regarding the government and police they should be doing a lot more to ensure that everyone has a helmet. It is saturation point now only in Dominica we don’t enforce that and the law on helmets has been there for years..

why are we blaming all the wrong people for the cause of such accidents? talking about the police conducting traffic and minister putting speed humps “dont take me wrong all of these should be put in place”
    but….
it is up to the motorcyclists and motor vehicles drivers to drive carefully and value there own life.
Motorcycle riding means that you take full responsibility for your own safety..

  18. The Observer
    November 23, 2012

Even if they are wearing helmets and they drive stupid they will still have terrible accidents. The helmet might preserve the head, but impact can still break the neck.

The ignorance of minds and carelessness of actions must first cease, then the helmets might be of help. The way I see fellas riding them bikes is as if they have to prove that they can be more stupid and aggressive than anyone else on the road.

It does not take a Police or a law to tell you to protect yourself. Self preservation is nature’s first law. I notice the dogs in Roseau cross the roads at the pedestrian crossings, but the riders feel its any port for a storm, is “take dey taking over, an gear day gearin up.” RIP buddies!

    • Roz
      November 23, 2012

I stopped for a dog on a cross walk in lagoon two days ago. I had to marvel at the dog.

On another note, drivers, riders and pedestrians alike must follow nature’s call for self preservation and go with care on the road.

      RIP to the rider.

    • November 23, 2012

Hi Observer. I agree with some of what you say but we must still try to educate the young men who are engaging in such dangerous behavior.

    • waitukubuli-original
      November 23, 2012

So true, I thought the same thing. Why would anyone require the law to remind them that reckless driving kills? Sadly, those riders left behind do not learn from the mistakes of those who died on the road. They continue to adopt the same pattern of recklessness. Makes one wonder! The same reason why you won’t deliberately and sanely put a gun to your head and pull the trigger, likewise, you don’t ride recklessly on a narrow, two-way traffic road. Same consequence.

These young bikers on these Zootee LaMort are a nuisance that can no longer be ignored. They are not only killing and injuring themselves but are also a danger to pedestrians. On my last visit home one of them colided with my wife while she was attempting to cross the road.

They should be compelled to carry at lease 500K in insurance before they can get on these bikes. That would help keep them off the roads!

    • OMG

@ Anonymous, 500k for insurance wont keep them off the road,There will just be more Robberies , Killing and HIV, cause they’ll do anything for a bike..When u see dem man go foreign and they steal and Kill they always fall in the trap of death, i mean we all have to die but dem man does call death fast,,, young fellas take it easy live one day at a time and turn to God. Lots more to come if the police don’t start controlling these drivers. I don’t mind if they kill themselves but when it is bad if when innocent people and tourist gets killed. The police needs to put more traffic control police officers on the road now. Dominica roads are not roads to speed on. I love Dominica but the drivers are just not courteous.

The the guy who died may his soul rest in peace.

  32. November 23, 2012

Good morning my people. First I want to offer my condolence to the family of this young man and offer my sympathy to the driver of the truck. Now we have laws in Dominica that regulates the operation of vehicles which include motorcycles. I was in Dominica for the Creole Fest and I was standing in front of the bank on independence and GreatMalborough st when I saw a young man pulled up on a motorcycle. To my surprise there was a child on the back who was no older than twelve years old and they were not wearing any helmet. Now what was more troubling was that a Police Officer was standing in front of the bank watching this and he didn’t issue this man a summons for not wearing a helmet or endangering the welfare of this child. I am asking our Officers to please enforce the Traffic Rules and Regulations because it save lives. We also need posted speed limits because the roads are good and people think they can speed as they please.

    November 23, 2012

After every motorcycle incident where the rider has lost his/ her life there is a slew of comments about helmet and safety gear!

While it is up to the Police to enforce these laws, if infact, there are such laws on the books, safety begins with the RIDERS!
If they value their lives they would not wait for there to be enforcement to (1) wear helmets (2) ride responsibly.
While accidents do happen wearing helmets and responsible riding might reduce tremendously the risks…

In Dominica – the figures are staggering, Gone are the days what 3 Murders were a national out-cry and two deaths by accident was one too many. It would be quite a shock to many if or when these statistics are published.

but it would give a clearer picture of what we are up to.. Anyway – JUST ASKING . I do hope that ADMIN will do some research and publish a proper article, (not just a COMMENT) – for the Dominican Public read and be aware.

How sad a young life is gone due to an accident. R.I.P.
My heartfelt sympathy to his family. May you be strengthened by God’s loving consolation.
From some of the comments it appears that the driver of the motorcycle was speeding. When will they ever learn to drive cautiously and safely? I suppose that those drivers do not think that it will ever happen to them. You cannot bring back a life.
Those who are hurt in an accident suffer immensely. They could also be maimed for life.
In Dominica, too many young lives are lost/gone, one way or the other. I will always state in bygone years young people hardly ever died. They grew up to be adults and a ripe old age. This is the price we pay for progress. It should never be.
Adults and young drivers please drive carefully. You are constantly reminded to slow down. Decrease your speed. You have your life to preserve and others, be it your passenger(s) or pedestrians. You will arrive in time and intact. What is the rush? Life is worth living; not rushing.

  49. November 22, 2012

        November 24, 2012

        @Anonymous:

You have annointed yourself the position of High Grammar Potentate of this site, yet your grammar skills leave a lot to be desired.

FYI: “Shocking grammar, punctuation and formation or sentences in general” is not a grammatically correct sentence. Hints: (a)where is the verb?; (b)should you use the preposition “of” rather than “or” before “sentences in general”?; (c)what is “shocking” modifying?). I’ll give you a chance to correct this faux-sentence. Let me know if you need assistance.

Another FYI: I believe one of the reasons DNO exists is so that Dominicans of all walks of life, regardless of their grammer level, may communicate with each other. Correct grammer is not a necessity for communication to occur; as long as we understand what each other is saying (or the gist of what is being said), the communication is complete. So please hang up that Grammar Police badge and just enjoy the communication.

Obviously the person is not talking to the dead man. The comment is geared to the living, and since everyone needs to repent because we are all born in sin and are indeed sinners, it is not a bad advice to recommend to someone that they repent.
Don’t get upset when someone says turn to God, that’s the best advice ever

I’m not really against what you saying at all…I’m a God fearing woman…but Jesus died….we have to die too one way or the other…if not through accident then some other way…So if you implying the young man and our many young men who died wasn’t God fearing then that’s wrong….and also not all bikers ride like lunatics so don’t judge…many of you were not even at the scene of the accident.

      • wesleyman
        November 23, 2012

So whats your point? Since Jesus died we should not be careful? so you tel your kids when you get out there don’t be cautious, don’t look when you are crossing the street, if you want to jump off a bride enjoy yourself, because you have to die anyway?
see how rediculous that sounded? People excercise caution, you can create a situation where your own recklessness causes your death

when the police do their work and arrest hese young men who have no regard for their own lives is you all dominicans that call mat in the morning and say police hustling poor young men. in fact remains that these young men just want to bling and they know and are educated .they are just enslaving themselves and like to show off. so who can this guy show off for now. most of them have helmets and are refusing to wear them . they even riding without shirt. the worst thing in all that is our school grils are giving in to these disrespectful young men who have no regardsfor life itself.sad but true there will be many more.

  70. November 22, 2012

DNO before giving details of a story ensure what you are saying is accurate. The vehicles never collided. The guy lost control of the motor cycle, and was separated from it. He somersaulted in the road several times, hit a wall then landed under the said truck. Since it was only the motor cycle only one person was involved, unfortunately he died. The truck driver witnessed the entire incident and is traumatized by it all. Please be responsible in your posting! You can’t take back the bad information after it has been spread.

    November 22, 2012

DOMINICAN’S, where are we going driving fast? We will either go over a mountain,in the sea, in a river or run into a pedestrian. Mandatory alchol test, drug test, helmits, and speed limits. If we live in the fast lane, we will die in the fast lane. I don’t mind reckless drivers dying, but when innocent people have to die for their stupidity, this is where I am angry. What do we have to prove by driving too fast. SLOW AND STEADY
wins the race. Dominica is up and down, in and out, winding roads, blind soprts. We are not in America with for to six lanes on each side. We don’t even have enough people to be injured or dying like that. What is the rush. Ambulance and Fire Trucks should be rushing, and they still have to take pre-cution. Are they trying to show-off to their friend, what is really the point of driving too fast especially in this small DOMINICA. I work in the Medical field in New York, and it is painful to see people suffer from accidents. Take it easy Dominicans. You might not die, but you might be crippled. What is going to happen to your family and especially if you have little children. Look before you leep. Stay safe.

      November 22, 2012

so tru…..the traffic department, police, and other persons in this area need to seriously look into putting speedometers along the highways…the west coast road is so smooth now…no speed bumps in site….no speed limits drivers rule..they drive like crzy…instead of slowing down when pedestrians walkn by they speed faster….am even scared of taking a bus too….they speed just like the private vehicle owners….they answer cel phones and have really loud music while speeding..no seatbelts…our drivers are just wreckless all over the island….make this a priority before years end to place speed bumps all along the long stretches on the west coast…speed bumps should be all over the place, speed limits should not be broken….speedometers need to be placed ….iron rails are still missing beetween colihaut and bioche and bioche and dublanc….these need to be dealt with asap…i hope the right people are reading this…and our very important suggestions are being taken into consideration to be implemented asap..

Sorry for that loss. We need to do something about the traffic on the road. there is too much carelessness on the road. Waht a bouit stiffer penalties for traffic violations and a dedicated “E.O Leblan Highway Traffic Police Unit” complete with tons of traffic tickets.

My sympathies to the family of the dead man and i also commisurate with the driver of the vehicle (Truck). Hope the other injured man survives adn recover well

    • frenchii
      November 22, 2012

carelessness is even an understatement…but ure suggestions are just what i’m thinking…i’ve been emailing some of the departments responsible but i havent seen any signs of change….the police dont patrol the highways..nobody is given ticketts for speeding or overtaking, no penalties for seatbelts or vehicles that shouldnt be on the road(vehicle inspection), no speedbumps on the stretches of road on the highways.. there are alot of no’s that outway the good for this lovely highway….and not only the provate vehicle owners do this crzy driving but the bus drivers and the persons who drive company vehicles as well..not forgetting the truck drivers; these monsters dont care for nobody on the road…and where are the street patrols to ticket them, where are the speedometers to take their licence plate numbers, typing this is like am shouting this…but are they reading these comments…i think ppl should take this more seriously and submit these suggestions to the necessary departments…we need to get these things implemented asap…..too many accidents on the highway….traffic department get ure officers out on the field to start things off..not only in roseau or portsmouth but along the highways on the bothe the west and east coast….dont overlook the bus drivers and the dump truck or long truck drivers..they drive the worst….scary road drivers we got….and u kno the foreigners are reading this….this is one thing that got the tourists skeptical apart from the criminals who always go free…ppl less talk and more action…..lets see some change
