My take on drivers and the driving laws in Dominica:
    1. there is no acolhol test for drivers in Dominica, even after a fatal accident, the only place in the world
    2. a driver can get hundreds if tickets and pay them without effecting his license, gain only place in the world, other places licenses is base on a points system, you have 12 points and each you get a ticket you can lose 2 point, when lose 6 point you can no longer drive.
    3. I have see driver stop in the middle of rounder-about, think the approaching driver have right of way..
    4. Driver offer have no idea about right-off-way, particularly when approaching a park car in the road.

i get it why we keep these old, out dated law, is because Dominica is one big family, married to there cousins and doesn’t want to change the law to meet international standards..

Traffic signs are almost invisible in Dominica,no matter how a bus can be over loaded with passengers is the same high speed the buses are traveling in order to make more money, tyre treds ( designs on good tyres ) are almost invisible (bald)which makes it quite difficult to adhere on the asphalt are very common ,no markings on the roads,no lights to mark stop or drive through, certain, certain places have traffic signs the size of an exercise box painted in grey and written in black,no bumps to help slow down the vehicles, some bus drivers add an extra wooden box to in order to take in more passengers, lack of side walks (see above photo) even in front of schools there are no pedestrian markings,no inspections are made by police officers while buses especially are carrying passengers, when will the gov’t react to these fatal accidents and serious issues concerning the traffic system in Dominica? How many lives are they waiting to loose?Dominica was more in advance 20 years aback .

My condolences to the families of this terrible tragedy.

I believe many lives would be saved if we were all taught (like in many other countries) how, when and where to cross the road safely. Never cross the road when you can’t see the road sufficiently to the left and to the right of you, as would be in the case of crossing between, in front of, or behind a stationary vehicle.

What is stopping the schools from teaching our children to correctly cross the road, so that when they grow up they wont be another road casualty?

yes our drivers maybe reckless at time, but none wants to knock someone dead. road users are motorist cycles and pedestrian and all have a responsibility for their safety and that of other road users. let the professionals investigate and deal with the matter.

bon j…. But nobody in the picture have shoes…. The pitch not hot man…. or their talon siezay…..

On a more serious note…. it is a very sad situation. Praying for both parties. I also hope that the police carry out a thorough investigation to ensure that the driver of the bus was not a fault.

Mr. Aubertville Boyd, aka Bew, Beville, may your soul rest in peace and may the Lord give comfort and strength to your family and friends who are currently trying to understand and accept this tragedy that ended your life. The Community of Lagley and Concord are calling on the Dominica Police Force to arrest and prosecute the driver of the bus for his recklessness in speeding over the bridge, striking and killing our friend Bew!!!!

  11. Speed Bumps
    September 1, 2016

Speed bumps are urgently needed in Concord in order to avert another unnecessary road fatality. Imagine a major roadway to the airport passes through this quaint and sleepy village with no sidewalks or speed bumps.

  12. September 1, 2016

I reside in Concord and was present at the scene ……..!!!! That bus came flying over the bridge full speed and didn’t have time to slow down much less stop for our friend Bew. It struck Bew lifted him up his feet, his head bounced into the Windscreen leaving a huge dent and hair, carried him about ten feet and threw him on the street, broken up and mangled. It was one of the most horrific scenes ever witnessed by myself and, I’m quite sure, many others! …….. Mathis Joseph struck and killed our friend with his bus then went home and had dinner like nothing at all happened. In the United States he would have been immediately arrested ………………………

I am truly sorry about this incident and that you witnessed it. I passed that scent at 5.47pm and the body still lay in the road covered by a sheet and stones to hold it down, the accident is said to have occured at 3.45, so 2 hours later. How tragic for him to have lost his life this way and how so too for his friends and family to stay there all that time while his mangled body stayed on the road. May he rest in peace and the bus drivers driving liscence be revoked and manslaughter charges brought. Its time reckless drivers not be allowed back on our roads

It is sad your friend died in such a manner. What a shock it was for him coupled with pain and suffering.
Was he on the street waiting for the bus or simply walking on it? If only when he saw the bus approaching at full speed he was able to get out of the way.
While on the scene was the driver not interrogated by the police? Based on his version to the police and that of the witnesses as you who were on the scene, if the police determined he was at fault, he should have been immediately arrested.
Many accidents could be avoided. In spite of accidents in D/ca, some drivers still drive carelessly. Why was he driving at such a speed? He should have driving at a reasonable pace that if he has to abruptly stop, no one would be injured or killed.
He went home but I do not think he had dinner like nothing at all happened. He knew he killed a man. This would surely have affected him. Let us see what will be the outcome of the police investigation.

Alas! This is really sad! My prayers for both families. I travel to work on Mattis’ bus sometimes —.Portsmouth to Roseau. He is not a reckless or careless driver. As they say accidents will happen and they can happen to anyone.

they need speed bumps when a highway entering each and every town in Dominica, because fellas be driving though villages like they alone on de highway under Morne Daniel cliff.

    • Tell the Facts
      September 1, 2016

Dominica does not have street lights. Therefore, when especially driving through villages, residential areas the drivers should reduce their speed. At the same time nationals must avoid walking on the roads especially in busy areas and in view of oncoming vehicles.

I hope the driver is prosecuted and his license suspended. Our drivers are driving reckless on the roads not considering pedestrians. I even see that in little Roseau without proper sidewalks vehicles speeding smh.

You are jumping to conclusions. You do not know what happened, so you do not know if the driver is at fault.

What a sad situation! May he rest peacefully. Condolences to his family and friends. The road look wide enough for the pedestrian and the bus driver to see each other, was the bus going to fast? Was he wearing headphones? With this sad situation can I ask a silly question? Was it no shoe day? Why none of these people have no shoes?

lol. nothing unusual about that in Concord on a hot summer day. River is nearby and it is not uncommon to have people in the river enjoying a swim. The incident must have prompted them to run out of the water when they heard the loud noise from the impact. On another note, sad situation for all involved.

What is wrong with people walking around in their own village without shoes? We live in a tropical country. It is very comfortable. Why impose cold country attitudes on us?

accidents will always happen but more and more I am seeing the need for both drivers and pedestrians to be reminded about road safety. there are some heavy duty dump trucks hauling stuff for a project near the Douglas-Charles air port and the drivers of those trucks does not blow their horns when ever they are approaching the corners.

Admin, here is some breaking news for you.

Yesterday, a British woman was refused a refund on her flight to ‘Zika infested’ Dominica!!! Why are you not running a header on this? Here is the UK’s Daily Mail FRONT PAGE COVER ON THIS!!! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3755040/Pregnant-woman-left-distraught-travel-firms-REFUSE-refund-1-600-flights-Zika-infested-Caribbean-island-GP-said-risky-fly-there.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

There is something they call insurance, which is offered when booking your flight apparently this couple did not insure their flight. If the flight was insured they would have no problem. I learned the hard way some years back when I missed my connecting flight, with no insurance it cost me over $2000.00 US for new tickets. The insurance is fairly inexpensive between $25 to $50. US.

You were joking with those airline agents. The same thing happened to us but we had no pity for the airline .We were placed in a hotel and put on another airline to get home

    • shay
      September 1, 2016

Thou this is off topic I still went to read it. First of all Dominica is not infested with zika more than any other place. Matter of fact our count is lower than most. Secondly, that lady should know that airlines NEVER give cash refunds…so tell her take a credit with the airline like EVERYONE ELSE and have a sit. I am sure she will not be the first pregnant woman who had to cancel a flight.
