Plane accident at Canefield Airport

The plane at the Canefield Aiport

DNO can now confirm there was a plane accident at the Canefield Airport this morning.

There are no signs of smoke or fire coming from the aircraft, however police and fire department personnel are on the scene.

At this point information is very sketchy but DNO is investigating the incident and will bring information as soon as it becomes available.

Time to close down that airport

Before condemning the airport would it perhaps be possible that yesterday’s mishap was not an airport issue at all but a case of equipment failure? As I understand it the aircraft, a privately registered Aero Commander, suffered a tyre blow-out. We must remember that some of these planes are not spring chickens. The design of this plane was conceived in the late 1940’s, this particular aircraft (N590DR) dating from 1968. It does not mean that they are not fit to fly but they do require extra care and attention. Bevin’s own aircraft, a similar model but of 1962 vintage (N411FS) experienced a collapse of the left main landing gear when coming in to Cyril E.King airport in St. Thomas on a flight from Canefield in early June 2008 as a result of “fatigue cracking”. Luckily, in this instance too there were no casualties. I am sure that the present incident will be carefully examined and lessons learnt from it to ensure that flying remains a safe mode of transport. We should not jump to conclusions.

I agree with you very much. This was not the airports fault as you rightly said, but rather equipment failure. A few years back (1996) at Melville Hall, when American Eagle blew a tire – was it the airport’s fault? No it was not. Rather, it was equipment failure. Luckily, these aircrafts are fitted with two tires on each landing gear.

I don’t think so. DA needs an airport on the Roseau side of the island. The trek to and from Mellville Hall is not fun for those that live on the west side of the island. I would choose to fly out of Canefield.

wat de hell, more Roseau doe have space more allu want ting in Roseau, smh. That place is so conjested I want to know where u will put an airport. Allu will continue to take the long drive to Melville doe.

  5. Why??
    February 28, 2011

People keep on saying to close the airport. Unfortunately, the only time some persons saw the importance was when their family member had to be evacuated from the country for immediate medical purposes :( sad. Canefield cannot be closed down. Not Just the government but we as a people need to find ways of making use of the facility. Example, It doesn’t have to take the government to build a private hanger next to the airstrip to accommodate private aircrafts, have some plane washing facilities, proper fueling facility etc or even private aircraft repairs and their are so many other ways to generate income

To all of u with those negative comments..just give it some thought again! FAA is doing a great job..remember we are all humans…planes are gonna crash, cars are gonna break down, even our own bodies just stop working at times! remember we all are humans! and to those talking about bevin and his plane…at least the man is trying to keep a small operation to accomodate us his Dominican brothers and sisters! over 90% of Dominicans who have relatives who reside on st.thomas receive packages and stuff via bevin services…let us be thankful instead of trying to bring down our own people! one love!

I’m starting to believe a bunch of you commenters on DNO have no clue at all about anything. You guys just insist of flapping gums over a keyboard. Why don’t you guys take the time to investigate something 1st b4 spreading stupidity over the internet? 1st of all The money used to extend and upgrade MElville hall airport would in NO was give a “almost complete an international airport.”
You have to scout for relatively flat land which is scares in Dominica. So then you have to either flatten some mountains or hills move earth and make sure it is leveled. That Job alone is MILLIONS in US. Then you have to build the Runway Terminals and all that good stuff. Then lets talk about the money to run and maintain it. You really think we would have had a almost completed international airport? RUBBISH!! 2nd thing.. This plane crash landed cause it’s landing gears got stuck how is that Canfield Airport fault? You dotish like rasss omg… I have seen more plane crashes in SXM International Airport than anything in Dominica. Do some research 1st b4 you talk crap plz. Yall sickining y’all dont have any clue about anything.

Amen, just to arm themselves with information/facts but no, rather they spread ridiculous and unfounded rumors. It would be wonderful to have an international airport but right now the country cannot afford this so why not try to find other solutions, is it necessary to sell our souls and our country to achieve this goal, i think not.

There is more to this than having an international airport as there are lots of smaller and more difficult to reach countries because of the terrain etc. Countries with much smaller airstrips and precarious landing but they have no problems with access and generating visitors to their countries. We need to stop over focusing on this int airport and starting realizing the real reasons why tourism here is struggling so much to keep afloat, you would be suprised.

You among many complain about the government system yet you simply sit back and take it in every direction you can get it…( ). Change is small and progressive, so unless you have better solutions to the problems, that are within achievable means, you should refrain from making such remarks. have you ever thought of evoking the changes you so cry about?
Not because you want another political power in place means that the mindset of evoking change will bring about the solution you want. Most promises are unkept and easily broken. Whose to say, the next political powerhead will not break his/her promises?.
Rather than laying blame, start small, offer a solution. what would you recommend they do about the airport and the accidents that occur? have you ever thought along those lines?

Thank God no one was hurt. The same thing occurs in bigger countries with wheels being blown off, even while the plane is airborne and planes being driven off the runways; past the runways and landing on the grass. Can you imagine how scared those passengers were?
Well, you must have heard some stories as in New York City a few years ago when a plane plunged into the water. Fortunately there were no fatalities. The pilot was honored as a hero. He has since retired.
Some years ago I heard that Canefield is not a safe airport due to the turbulence.
Canefield Airport is convenient for those who live in central and southern Dominica. I would prefer landing at Canefield airport rather than Melville Hall Airport. It would be convenient for me and less time-consuming in view of the long drive from Melville Hall Airport to Roseau.
When I visit in the next – some – months, God willing, I would prefer to go to Canefield Airport. Wish that Canefield airport could be extended. I recognize that this may be an impossibility.

This airport needs to b closed a long time ago based on information given somes years ago by someone who works there,it’s not economically viable.Stop cruise ships from docking in roseau and develope this area for cruise ships, the only reason for not having ships dock there is if the depth of the sea i too shallow.Come government do the right thing,Roseau is not the right place too congested and not safe.

    February 27, 2011

interesting…Canefield has always being ranked extremly dangerous
due to the North to south alinement of the runway and those cross winds from east to west.
planes always have a best dancing competition going on at this time of year in particular.

thank God its wasnt anything Major.

Thats why i agree with Liat to continue operating Daylight time only into Melville Hall
Folks must realise the Danger with airfields that have alot of limitations.

Safety is always the Key element..

So to conclude it Melville Hall should never be a priority for NightLanding adventures
Liat play it safe your record is Key…Melville Hall is way too dark on both sides of the runway.

Another endorsing Factor that Dominica and Dominicans need to think outside of the Box bite the bullet and build a proper airport which eleminates the negatives factors of safety!

Currently main airport Melville Hall is way too much in the trench and surrounded by a main elevation of nature approx 4,000ft upwards and Canefield is suffering from wind issues, due to incorrect set up of runway and extremly residential and industrial aspect too close for any expansion etc….so Dominica and Dominicans have many national issues to deal with.

Instead of building and one man Legacy who in the end is “BOUND TO BE DOOMED HASHLY”

On a related piece, I must also say that you have really impressed me with the coverage you are giving to the missing girl (Shanice Gemmott). After reading about it here, I called two other local news sources because I had not heard it from them and they sounded like they knew nothing of what I was talking about. Its a very windy day and gusts have been sweeping down the valleys behind the airport. In such conditions this is not a surprise.

When the road is completed to Melville Hall I would suggest to close Canefield and turn it into a cruise ship port.

Spruce up Donkey Beach and make the old airport custom-made for cruise passangers, thus sparing Roseau the blockage whenever cruise ships are in port.

There is no difference between an accident and a mishap. However there most certainly is a difference between a crash and a mishap.

As soon as it landed, I could hear something was wrong… But thank God, no smoke. Someone walked out of the plane soon after it stopped, so a sign of relief was had by all…
