UPDATE: Man dies in Salisbury motorcycle accident (SEE PHOTO GALLERY)

The small West Coast village of Salisbury has recorded its second tragic death in less than two weeks.

On Saturday evening, a young man died in a motorcycle accident in the village. Reports are that the motorcycle hit a building near the road.

The accident occurred at about 8 pm and the motorcyclist’s body had been lying  motionless for more than an hour before it was removed.

We are following the story and will bring updates as they become available.

Saturday’s death comes over a week after Amassa Bachelor died while diving into the sea from a cliff with friends at a popular spot for young boys in Salisbury.

Villagers speculate that Amassa may have broken his neck and/or drowned while diving. His body was pulled ashore by other persons in the area.

I wish to sypathise with the family. But i must say that there’s alot of vagabonds on the road riding aimlessly with no respect for law and oher and the public’s safety.Based on the photos i saw,the man did not even had shirt on his back, far more protective gears.Sad to say some of these riders get what they look for.

That bike business in Dca needs to either be curbed or properly legislated. Too many unlicensed bikes, no helmets, no proper bike riding training, many many many uninsured bikes and riders. This is ridiculous. The entire system is failing on this bike drama. Sorry to hear yet another loss of life on a bike in Dca.

You’re obviously biased. There are many more issues surrounding bikers and biking in Dominica than more stringent legislature. The attitude of dumbnica’s citizens towards bikers is a good place to start.

Dumbnicans hate bikes because black men ride them, but they don’t hate the people who make the bikes, the same thing can be said about guns.

Once a black person uses something, it’s automatically bad.

So u using a racial line against your own race? Do you know the race of those who made the particular bike? I usually slow down to allow a 50cc to overtake me because he cannot go faster than my car…yet he thinks just because he has a bike he should get free right of way to pass me…U have any idea de number or near misses i see on a regular day? every two wheeler bike wants to overtake on the Goodwil road highway…….why? a scooter want to overtake a bus…….why?????
Our young heads to to think responsibly. Drive safely. Wear protective gear. Stop riding with no license, You dont have to overtake EVERY VEHICLE infront u.PARENTS SHOULD GET INVOLVED!!!! IF YOU HAVE A YOUNG SON GET INTERESTED IN HIS DRIVING HABITS AND SAFETY!!!!!

I love bikes… I ride (haven’t ridden in dominica). I completely disagree with you. You sound like a rider that is trying to prove a non existent point. Its true there needs to be more training and more strict laws. Helmets should be mandatory at all times for instance. When we are young we think we are indestructible. That’s why rules need to be put in place to protect our youth. Educate them on how to ride properly and safely, and on how to inspect and check their bikes before getting on. Whatever it takes to decrease the amt of incidents. To the family of the deceased…I pray that you all find comfort in the Lord. My deepest sympathies go out to you all.

The law enforcer needs to make helmets mandatory. The riders might not like it at first but its for their safety. 85% of the persons in motorcycle fatalities were without helmets just enforce the laws and lives will be saved.

Now that we all have extended our sympathies, let us reach out to the other young men who drive on the streets as if they do not care about other people’s lives. I hope that this serves as a wake up call to all the bikers and race car drivers on the road. The canefield stretch was opened on Friday night and already I have seen bikers racing on it. Pray for those too.

My condolences to the family of the young man.

I am sure that when he climbed on his bike he did not foresee his demise. When you’re young you take unneccessary risks thinking that you are invincible.

Cycle riders, please wear a helmet, car drivers/passengers please buckle up your seat belt.

Dare devils – daring devils that take their lives into their hands and do not care if others get injured or killed in the interim. This is called reckless driving and disobeying the Law and the rules of the road. One way or the other, sooner or later, people pay for their actions.

Picky, picky, picky! Give DNO a break. There is no need for such an admonishment which is why you got so many thumbs down. You have displeased a lot of people with such a comment.
An accident occurred and pictures were taken, similar to anywhere in Dominica.
DNO is the Media. DNO does not need permission to take the pictures and post them. Your mother’s house just happened to be near the scene of the accident. Note the number of people who are near the house.
Use your discretion, if you have any. DNO did not just opt out and take the picture for no reason. I do think your mother’s house was in the way. You should be happy and proud that it is a nice house and in the picture. Why not keep a picture of it?

Well this is sad, firstly, to see a human being exposed like an animal and people taking pictures and watching. Secondly, even if the first responders took an hour there had to have been nurses/ doctors in the village who COULD HAVE ATTEMPTED TO STABILIZE THIS INDIVIDUAL UNTIL HELP ARRIVED! This person is still resting face down maybe drowning in their own blood..
And finally, there are reasons why certain safety equipment are necessary for certain modes of trsnsportations! Seatbelt for cars and buses, helmets, boots and light jackets with Kevlar- like paddings in the back, for motor cycles. They save lived.. RIP

    • You stupid
      August 15, 2011

  26. COCOSEC
    August 14, 2011

While some of us make stupid comments we fail to see the big picture. This just exposes the flaws in our health care emergency response system. This is Salisbury; if we need an ambulance where does it come from? We have been told by the police do not touch a victim because we are not trained hence the reason he laid there for over an hour. Who is trained on the ambulance? I have withnessed this on several occasions. The ambulance is just a pick up truck. They do not administer any first aid! There is no neck brace, no IV, no bandages! They just arrive with a stretcher and gloves on their hands! I remember clearly when the two brothers died in the accident at public works, the ambulance personnel did not even have a pair of scissors or knife to cut the seat belt!! You are responding to the scene of a vehicluar accident, what did you expect?

Apart from reiterating safety to teenagers and young people, we need to do our share. Young people are fearless and feel invincible. This is life. You can preach helmet from now till Jesus comes, there will always be those who do not obey. What we need is proper emergency plans. We need quicker emergency response times and we need a proper emergency team to man the ambulance.

With this said, I would like to extend my condolonces to the St. Luce family. I know some of them were here for the reunion. God can help you carry any burden. Pray without ceasing.

Sometimes in accidents it is better to leave the body untouched before a professional gets there with the right equipments because the person might have suffered from a spinal injury or have broken their pelvis and moving them would only cause more complications. my sympathy goes out to his family …i hope this man was saved :-?

Are you surprised? This occurs in every part of the world.
Let me further inform you. When I was a child and we heard there was a fire in town, be it in the middle of the night, some people would get dressed and go to the scene. This is a normal reaction is human nature.
On one occasion I was still in high school. On the way to school and after school we passed near the burnt house, especially if some people died in the fire.
      So what do you know?

    August 14, 2011

The time taken by the emergengy to examine the body – one hour. That’s unacceptable – there should be a response time for the emergency sevices like where I presently reside. There should be more ambulance and fire substations in Dominica. A Presidential Palace will not answer the needs of the people – spend money wisely on projects which will benefit the populace.

In everything, someone has to find a way to put politics in it? you all are doing more damage to the country than anyone of the political leaders.

      • August 14, 2011

Why politic in this debate? we have to, because the money spend on the palace should be spend on having emergency personnel/ fire and ambulance/ parametric in every village/ what about a helicopter to transport people to hospital instead of the long drive, so yes politic have to be included in this

Imagine someone lying on the road for over an hour before medics arrive, you call this development, i say no way no way

        My condolences to the family

Do you people really sit and wait for things like these to happen to come on here and show how ignorant you really are? Its an accident for crying out loud what does the prime minister have to do with anything is there always a doctor at the scene of every accident the nurse was she did what she was supposed to do chances are he was already dead she is a nurse she cannot pronounce someone dead and in any event it is known that accident victims should not be moved until medics come to the scene so please stop acting like people with no sense its sad when these things happen but we as young people take silly risks with our lives and we have no one to blame bout ourselves.I am sure this young man was not wearing a helmet which could have made all the difference in the world!

The nurse can check for vital signs; se if the pupils are dilated and from there make a determination, acting on the advice of a medical doctor.

And where does Skerrit come in here. I do not understand. Please explain to us Elton.

I am Sure that he will be taken directly to the hospital where he will be officially pronounced dead.

That’s terrible. Though I wonder how long the body was lying there before the nurse came to inspect it. If it was several minutes after police arrived, that could have made all the difference in saving their life!

I hope the family is okay.

      @ good thinker

I do realize that Salisbury being a small village those accidents are shocking since they are also unexpected. They are sad to hear of. These accidents could have happened in any Dominican village or town.
Accidents occur in big towns and cities and many of them in a matter of days, weeks or minutes including many times a day. This is life although accidents in general could be prevented.
It is imperative that we at least try to be cautious and always with the help of God, asking Him for His Divine protection wherever we plan to go, wherever we may be, whatever we plan to do and are doing.
There is nothing that pleases God most when His beloved children call on Him with a humble and contrite heart and ask Him for His blessing, graces and protection. We show Him that we are mere weak mortals and are in dire need of His help in many respects. This, too, is placing Him first in our lives.
Our Dear Blessed Lord is always there for us, He who said: “I will never forsake you my people…” and is ever ready to protect us if we also recognize Him in our lives and worship Him.
I hope that God had mercy on his soul.
      God’s blessing, peace and protection.

Motorcycles are unfinished vehicles, the more reason why riders MUST be more careful. My prays goes out to the bereaved.

Motorcyles as bicycles are unprotected, vulnerable vehicles which are prone to accidents be it through other vehicles. I view them as unsafe. This is another reason why those motorcyle drivers of all should not take chances on the road and speed. They should always drive cautiously. Their lives are in their hands.

      @ OMG

Your comment made me laugh and wonder what it is all about. It does not make any sense.
What world? It appears that as long as there are human beings accidents will occur. What we should do is to try to avoid them by also being careful not to cause accidents. It is as simply as that.
