UPDATE: Fatal accident under Canefield cliff

Scene of the accident

Two men who died in an accident under the Canefield Cliff on Friday night, have been identified as 39 year-old Marcus Dupuis and Kareem Labad who was 21.

The accident occurred at about 8.45 pm along the E.O. Leblanc Highway close to the Lyndhurst Funeral Home at the junction of the road leading to the Hummingbird Inn.

Police said on Saturday that the accident involved a Mitsubishi pick-up truck which was traveling northwards and a motorcycle traveling in the opposite direction which was carrying Dupuis and Labad, both from Canefield.

They said their investigation so far reveals that the pick-up was turning off the highway into the road which leads to  Hummingbird Inn and the motorcycle was moving in the opposite direction when a “major” collision occurred.

According to the police, both vehicles were extensively damaged and information revealed that the two riders on the motorcycle have died from injuries received during the accident.

They say the other people involved in the accident appear to be in stable condition and are assisting the police with their investigation.

Police are calling on motorists to be very careful when driving and to avoid the temptation of speeding on the roads.

RIP both , sympathies to the families. This is a sad situation any which way you look at it.
It is time the Government do a National Rod Safety study in a public setting so that everyone can contribute in a meaningful manner .
It is clear that what ever we are doing has failed our children . A new start is needed, I would like to say wider roads and street lights.

The Police is as much as fault as any for this tragedy. The Police is just not doing its work. I remember well the days when the traffic police enforced the tragic rules… riding their motor bikes and admonishing reckless motor traffickers, whether those on tailboards, pinions sans helmet and so on. If we want to stop this rampant death by driving in our country, the Police must do its jog.

Be civilised and educated.. Why don’t u say for people to start being more careful. Why we always get others to blame?? Every body needs to play their part and the police will deal with the rest issues.. Police not God… If we don’t be careful with our lives who can save us? Unity, let’s help our self and help who needs help not blame

It is time we liberate ourselves from the Plantation Society where someone always has to have a whip on our backs. We ought to take responsibility of ourselves and be our brothers keepers without the police. Motorists on a whole are supposed to be careful on the road. Many drivers do not respect bikers. Yes, there are bikers who form the fool however most are careful riders.

So many things cause accidents but you would think reading some of this nonsense, that it is only fast driving. What about cruising away and the person at your back has an emergency or otherwise that they need to be out of there. What about the numbers who drive on full bright with four to six headlamps , even driving right behind you on full bright blinding you, are they good drivers? Pedestrians stroll and chat on the road, you reversing someone comes and stand behind the vehicle with a phone to their ear. the mopeds criss cross the road and the bikes driving on your left or right and even crossing in front of you.
Right now it only hurt when the innocents pay. The traffic department should devise a suitable dimming check for all vehicles when they go to license becomes some of those lights are right in the eye of the other oncomming driver.

Many drivers I believe have vision issues and instead of going to the doctor they just buy brighter lights, other drivers be dammed. Hope your suggestion is given consideration

The fatal accident accident occurred along the E.O. Leblanc Highway “close to the Lyndhurst Funeral Home.”
An instinct. I have noted, is this not ironical that many accidents and fatal ones occur near this Funeral Home? Why? It sounds rather suspicious. I hope there is no hanky-panky of evil works in this.
Was this funeral home situated there prior to the Highway being built or after? This is worth investigating.

I am giving a judgement or a verdict but base on the police report it seems that someone did not respect right of way and that has become a norm in this country.

    • Me
      June 25, 2017

right of way comes with judgment, distance and speed. From the side of the vehile they hit it can be seen that the van was clearly already turned and a good distance from the bike. The bike was too impatient and decided they can make it so they end up on the WRONG side of the road.they could have killed oncoming drivers if they did not hit the van.

      “not”
It should be mandatory that they wear helmets and seat belts.

  20. June 24, 2017

Most accidents are avoidable. Most of these accidents are based on bad judgement. Very often we think that we have the time to make the turn, get to there before the other, or we just don\’t realize what\’s about to happen until it happens and it\’s always, always, too late. I sympathize with the family and friends of those who lost their lives. I empathize with those in shock of what happened.

I was told at the time of my loss, that \”the ONLY PERSON that could tell the TRUTH is DEAD.\” In other words, he\’s already dead. Go figure. One never get over that feeling of \’what if\’.

R.I.P. Condolences to your families and friends.
Wish that ALL motorists would be a little more careful. What we see in the movies isn\’t real. We should be more careful when driving, for ourselves and others.

If there are witnesses, they could testify to which one was wrong. In fact, the manner of the vehicles, police should be able to know who was at fault.

  21. Austin Bell Deserve
    June 24, 2017

The Government needs to stop calling these major roads “Highways” because they don”t meet the international standards of what constitutes a highway. Also the road under the Cane Field Cliff should be strictly prohibited of over – taking except by emergency authorities. Also dividers should be placed all along that roadway to ensure this and a stronger police patrol presence should be in place.
We need to begin to put safety measures in place as we move forward in our development.
Another area is placing Traffic lights in high volume traffic areas. Just to name a few, At the bottom of goodwill road close to the Potters Ville Savanna (there is a major traffic concern there) and also the bottom of Federation Drive. The relevant authority can find the other spots. We need TRAFFIC CONTROL. IT CAN SAVE LIVES.
My sympathies to all the families of those who have died on these roads.
    Thank you for your space.

Dear Dominicans,Let us pray . Death isn’t from God for he came that we may live and do so abundantly .
When and however it comes death is mainly painful an experience .Improved road means increased need for due care and attention by all road users .New laws have to be enacted and old ones , where necessary reviewed and enforced. Vehicles have to be roadworthy and protective headpieces used. The Police traffic is under equipped but has enough to do the basics but is just lackadaisical. Drinking & Texting even blowjobbing ( jerking ) is now common place .I see some bikers deliberately and maliciously showing no respect for other road users’ safety .Oftentimes we see up to three persons including minors on bikes. Traffic signs dont really exists and where seen are ignored .Miss MuriBlanchard there is Great need for PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS & SPEEDBUMPS and Proper sidewalks in Lotbor along GOODWILL ROAD. It is absolutely risky for road users in that area especially skoolkids church goers .

Lord even if we want to be politically correct, and sensitive to all in times like these, but when we observe, the manner in which some uses the road, and the lack of Road awareness, and consideration for other road uses, in our small country, it begs the question ” when will it be abated”? That`s the million Dollar Question, we all have our part to play, in an effort to minimize these ever increasing Road fatalities, and accidents/incidents. Why? Lord Why?you are the only perfect one. People use the roads bad. Be cause the roads are wider they turn everywhere. Maybe lane barriers needs to be placed under the cliff so people can follow others. Police need to stop people driving with extra bright light. Motorcyclist themselves needs to be more careful. We cannot continue loosing love ones neighbours. None of the guys were wearing helmets. The police know the rule the riders know the rule yet as we know if no one pushes for the rule to be upheld we are going to continue loosing love ones . Family members. Friends and the list goes on. Police needs to NOW enforce the laws . ANONE SEEN RIDING WITHOUT HELMETS THE BIKES NEEDS TO BE TAKEN FOR A WHILE AND THE PERSON’S FINED REAL HARD. The road users have become EXTRA GREEDY and FOOLISH. Lots of people driving with extra bright lights and really don’t care about anyone else.. people overtake everywhere and anywhere.. people see others going in opposite direction whIle they are overtaking yet still continental so u have to sometimes get out of the way so they can pass.

Something needs to be done to save lives on the roads through education and traffic enforcement.

It’s only been a couple of days since I voiced my concerns about the number of accidents occuring on a seemingly perfectly fine road, no pot holes, no dangerous bends, good visibility and the road is wide enough for overtaking.

Now, with that said, why is it this area is a hot spot for accidents. The only sensible conclusion i can come to is that these accidents are down to either drivers error or one which relates to the mechanics of the vehicle (vehicle fault).

I once again call on the government to educate motorist and pedestrians through traffic signage, radio programs and an upgrading of the driving test done by new drivers. Police must also forcefully enforce the driving laws when they are broken.

So true, most of the drivers with their licence canot drive properly. They driving like is them alone on the road. No common sens, no good judgement. In that case, I ll put the blame on the van, or the driver never watch if anything coming, or he was thinking he had time to cross. But on the road, u must watch and better if you watch twice than none. They saying the bike had speed, well that is why the driver had to wait before he cross that road. Most of drivers dont have respect for bike, that’s it. A lot of dangerous person driving, even police driving or riding stupid and dangerous.

Even though some of us do not know them, also due to distance, we feel your sorrow. Our prayers are with you that God will provide the necessary strength to see you through this difficult time. Take heart!
Eternal rest grant unto your loved ones and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls rest in peace. Amen!
Lord have mercy! Christ have mercy! Christ hear us! Christ graciously hear us!

Those accidents make us feel suspicious. In view of many accidents in that area, some months ago I stated that area should be properly blest. It may be some ghosts of the departed who died in accidents are around, beckoning for more fatal accidents.
My family and friends drive there occasionally. I pray God protects them from any accident.

We are too aggressive on the road. Drivers and not courteous. We don’t give people chances to cross without driving up on them or not stopping to allow them to even use the yellow line.

Pedestrians too hinkntht are made of stone and want to cross behind you even whilst you driving. Crossing road like they cruising.

The road sides are lacking..so people are forced to walk on roads. Road a are bad so drivers drive on road sides.

What can one say that they have not yet stated about those accidents in Dominica? The public is frustrated with these drivers who just keep driving with no thought of other drivers, themselves and their passengers.
For God’s sake! You have a life to live. Do you not want to live a long life? You also have relatives as also children. Drive cautiously!
Drivers are aware of the accidents and what can occur if they do not drive carefully. They must know when they have right of way to turn and to continue driving. They must know that they should not cut-off drivers nor turn too close to another driver who is turning. They must yield and wait their turn.
Your life is precious. Learn a lesson from those accidents which previously occurred. They do not!
When you drive think of your life and that of others.
It appears that the traffic department will have to conduct a re-training for drivers. People are injured and die through some drivers’ negligence.

    Ok, this is garbage
Time to put some speed cameras for people driving recklessly and overtaking wildly under the cliff.
I used to rubbish the idea of speed bumps saying they would cause traffic and not practical on a highway but….this is getting out of hand

That’s very true. People no longer have respect for self and so we see it daily.
I am afraid that it will only escalate. So much emphasis has been placed on academics that parents no longer socialize children on the right and wrong way of living. The Internet has become their beacon.
It is a terifing thing to drive in Dominica as people drive how they think and not by the rules of driving.
      God help us.

Is not no blood sacrifice… they were already driving like maniacs down there.. They get good road so give them room..All those accidents are a result of the better roads, the murders are a different story. May they all r.i.p.

These deaths are pure recklessness. Constant overtaking in heavy traffic and blind corners. Sometimes vehicles and motorcycles will overtake five vehicles at once under Canefield Cliffs. It needs to stop!!!

My condolences to the family and friends. We are entering a new era/season in the Christian world. God’s power is falling on All flesh as he has promised and people are getting saved. While this is happening, the ignorant/defenseless are being attacked by the mad Devil.for he knows that his time is closing in.
NB Those getting saved are under attack but there is protection from the Holy Spirit. The only way we can be defeated is if we allow ourselves to be defeated! Those who know the word must use the word to fight the devil. We cannot fight him on our own. Our flesh is even our enemy too.
Violent deaths don’t just happen. We call some accidents but there is always something behind it!either alcohol, drugs, anger….Think about it!
We all have access to God but we must repent, follow his laws/statutes, do his will……… He is great in mercy. Read Psalm 91 and 103.
The bible is not just a book it is the actual thought of God that brings his word to life to you when you…

Accidents happen, not only do they happen but the roads in Dominica aren’t necessarily built for safety. People do as they please on these roads and we have to be careful and look out for one another. I pray for everyone’s safety and keep these families in my prayers. However stop your archaic thinking.

Idiot when people take better precaution on the road then the road fatalities will end….but as long as people keep up the reckless driving and don’t take their time to drive there will be accidents….So the drivers keep on driving like there’s no tomorrow then you all will keep talking about foolish blood sacrifice….These reckless drivers are the ones causing their own blood sacrifice….people please take your time on the road if you are late to go somewhere don’t rush it once late can’t be early again it’s better to be late than losing your life….I guess everywhere in the world that have road fatalities are blood sacrifice.

Thus has nothing to do with God. If you drive or ride a bike like an idiot, chances are you will eventually get involved in an accident. This is not rocket science.

Yes we need to come together and pray for our country, and each other. I pray for protection for everyone who uses the road whether as pedestrians or drivers. I have noticed that many people have no street discipline. There is a DON’T CARE ATTITUDE all over the place, and when you say something, it turns political.
I have heard people say that “The country dead'” and I keep telling them to stop repeating this phrase, because they are putting a curse on the country, but some people refuse to acknowledge that, so there goes nothing.
There are so many rentals now and everyday visitors breaking entry, Now there are many drivers on the road and they just cannot drive. Even to park a vehicle is a big problem. There are drivers who just move out in front of your vehicle as soon as you reach close to them with no signal, and they still insult you then they just slow down to zero miles per hour. The police needs to be more alert. Many drivers need to retest.

You religious fanatics are crazy. You link everything to a curse. Common man, let’s be practical. The death was not caused by some demonic curse, it was caused my one, or both drivers driving carelessly
