UPDATE: Female passenger loses leg in vehicular accident (SEE PHOTO GALLERY)

At least two persons were seriously injured when a passenger bus (HB575) headed to Paix Bouche reportedly collided with a water truck at Colihaut this afternoon between 4 and 5pm.

The leg of a female passenger, who was one of two women sitting in the front passenger seat, was severed during the accident. She had to be cut from the wreckage. She underwent surgery shortly after and reports are that the second leg may have been amputated.

The driver, Thomas Baron, received minor injuries and he was treated and discharged from hospital.

Reports suggest that the driver was having difficulties seeing clearly due to the high sun beam in his face, and moments after climbing a steep part of the road, ran into the back of the water truck which is being used by the Chinese on the multi-million-dollar road rehabilitation project.

The bus was filled to capacity. The truck received minor damage.

A source close to the incident said driver was “climbing a hill and at that point the sun is like in your eyes”.

“The water truck was stopped. And that area, at that time the sun is in your eyes. The girl who was by the door saw it and thought the driver did too. But by the time she realised the driver did not see it, she screamed, but it was too late. The bus basically entered underneath the truck; that’s why their feet got crushed… He (driver) was not speeding but he was not going at 40mph either,” the source said.

I WAS ONE OF THE FIRST SET OF PEOPLE ON THE SCENE AND CAME OUT TO HELP. I WAS TRAVELLING IN A BUS EN ROUTE TO ROSEAU FROM POSSIE. UPON APPROACHING THE AREA; THE PEOPLE WERE STILL BLEEDING, MANY WERE IN SHOCK AND VERY FEW HAD LEFT THE BUS. I PROCEEDED TO ASSIST THOSE WHO SEEMED IN THE GREATEST OF NEED……WAW DAT WAS QUITE A DIFFICULT CHALLENGE AND ITS ONLY GOD DAT GAVE ME THE STRENGTH TO BE OF ANY HELP TO THOSE PEOPLE…MANY WERE SERIOUSLY HURT PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY! TWO PERSONS UP FRONT WERE LITERALLY ENTRAPPED THE ONE NEAREST THE PASSENGERS DOOR CALLED ON GOD AND ASKED FOR HER KIDS. I SPOKE TO HER AND ASKED HER IF SHE COULD STILL FEEL HER LEGS .SHE SAID YES! THERE WAS BLOOD ALL OVER AND I SPOKE TO THE BUS DRIVER WHO WAS ALSO VERY DISTRAUGHT AND ASKED HIM TO LIE DOWN ON THE GRASS. EFFORTS WERE MADE TO PULL OFF THE OTHER WOMAN WHO SEATED CLOSEST TO THE CHAUFFEUR. I ADVISED THEM NOT TO DO SO BECAUSE OF THE VERY REAL POSSIBILITY OF HER LIMBS STAYING BEHIND. THERE WAS A DEEP SENSE OF FEAR AND DESPERATION.

THEN AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO PULL THE FRONT OF THE BUS TO RELIEVE THE ENTRAPMENT OF THE TWO WOMEN. THIS WAS QUITE A HELL OF A NERVE WRECKING AND PAINFUL EXERCISE…. WHICH REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL SKILL AND EXPERIENCE AND I FEARED WHETHER MORE HARM WAS GOING TO BE DONE TO THE WOMEN IN SUCH AN EXERCISE? THE FIRST ATTEMPT AT SO DOING FAILED ONLY TO ADD TO THE FRUSTRATION THE SECOND ATTEMPT DID SUCCEED. PEOPLE FROM THE FRONT OF THE SAID BUS ONE WOULD BE ABLE TO SEE THE TOES ETC OF THE TWO WOMEN ENMESHED IN RAW SHARP METAL. QUITE HORRIFIC INDEED. I WAS TOLD THAT THESE WOMEN ARE FROM THE NORTH EITHER PORTSMOUTH/PAIXBOUCHE. THE FIRST LADY NEAREST THE PASSENGERS’ DOOR WAS THE FIRST TO BE REMOVED. THE OTHER WOMAN WAS THE MOST QUIET OF THE TWO I SUSPECT SHE WAS IN DEEP SHOCK!

A TEAM OF GOOD-INTENDED VOLUNTEERS PLACED THE LEAST INJURED OF THE TWO WOMAN ON THE GROUND ADJACENT TO THE BUS. I THEN PROCEEDED TO SPEAK TO HER. GOT THE ASSISTANCE OF ANOTHER YOUNG LADY AND GAVE HER SOME BOTTLED WATER. I REMOVED MY WHITE VEST( NEVER KNOWN TO HAVE WORN ONE EVER IN MY LIFE BEFORE THIS DAY—I GUESS IT WAS FATE). I TOLD THE INJURED LADY DO NOT GAZE AT HER LEG. IT WAS VERY BADLY DAMAGED. I REMOVED THE VEST AND COVERED HER LEG WITH IT. MANY ATTEMPTS HAD BEEN MADE TO GET INTO CONTACT WITH THE AMBULAMCE AND WORD WAS IN THAT THEY WERE ON THEIR WAY. BY THAT TIME THE CROWD OF ONLOOKERS HAD SWOLLEN. A PSYCHOLOGICALLY AFFECTED YOUNG GIRL; A STUDENT AT THE DSC COLLEGE WALKED AROUND AIMLESSLY. SHE WAS ON THE BUS. VERY EMOTION AND IN DEEP TEARS, UNDERSTANDABLY UPSET AND DISILLUSIONED. I FELT SORRY FOR THE YOUNG LADY AND ALL THE OTHER VICTIMS. PERSONS WEPT OPENLY. THERE WAS NO SHORTAGE OF VOLUNTEERS MANY HELPING BUT UNSURE AS TO HOW TO HELP.

THE AMBULANCES CAME IN REASONABLE TIME. THE GENERAL PUBLIC WAS NOT TOO COOPERATIVE WITH THEM; IF ANYTHING THEY FRUSTRATED THEM AND OUGHT TO HAVE ALLOWED THEM TO DO THEIR WORK. AFTER ATTENDING TO THE WOMAN ON THE GROUND; I PROCEEDED TO MY BUS. AM UNSURE WHETHER AN ATTEMPT TO FREE HER FROM THE WRECKAGE DID MORE HARM THAN GOOD TO HER CONDITION. DID NOT SEE WHETHER SUCH AN ATTEMPT WAS DONE BY VOLUNTEER RESCUERS OR THE AMBULANCE PERSONNEL EITHER WAY WOULD THE RESULT BE DIFFERENT ? THE LADY LOST HER LEG. HOWEVER ASSUMING THAT THE ATTEMPT WAS NOT MADE BY THE AMBULANCE PEOPLE. WOULD THEIR EXPERTISE HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE ? WAS THE HARM DONE WHEN THE PEOPLE TRIED TO RELIEVE THE LADIES FROM THE FRONT OF THE BUS WHEN IT WAS BEING PULLED BY THE CHINESE WATER TRUCK. I WITNESSED THIS AND THAT EXERCISE LASTED FOR A FEW SHORT SECONDS.

I DO WISH THESE TWO LADIES ALL THE BEST AND I SHALL BE MAKING AN ATTEMPT TO VISIT THEM. IT WAS A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE.

    LORD HELP US .

I HOPE TO COME VISIT BOTH WOMEN SOMETIME!

    TAKE CARE AND BE STRONG!

NB DON’T YOU KNOW THAT IF THESE WOMEN WERE NOT TRAPPED IN FRONT THE BUS THAT THERE WAS THE VERY REAL POSSIBILITY THAT THEY COULD WELL HAVE BEEN THROWN THROUGH THE WINDSCREEN AND MEET THEIR INSTANT VIOLENT HORRIFIC DEATH ON THE HEAVY METALED CHINESE WATER TRUCK ? SO I HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT IT COULD DEFINITELY HAVE BEEN WORST.

So sorry to hear about this sad situation.May God continue to be with the people who were affected in this terrible tradegy, especially the lady who lost her leg, you are in my prayers. When things like this happens we Dominicans must THINK before we TALK….Remember we have mothers, fathers, children….So if we cannot say something positive to comfort the people that is suffering is …Its best to keep .

I am so sorry to hear of this tragic accident in my home village. My heart goes out to the families who are affected. For those drivers out there the sun could be very bad while driving even with a sunshield, As the previous writer says, I have been looking at those comments and I am disgusted to find out that the country which I love so dearly and the people they have became people I do not recognize. I always learned up to this day maintain that “If we live in glass houses we should not throw stones,” Yet all I read about is people are quick to judge and rejoice at the misfortune of others, We should learn to love our neighbors as ourselves, and do not wish for others what we do not want for ourselves, If you don’t have anything to say, please shut up. We all have children, fathers, mothers and we should put ourselves in other people’s position because we are all in a queue and what we wish for others could come back to hunt us, so please be compassionate and pray for others instead of throwing stones.
I am proud to be Dominican but I am disgusted with people’s attitude, We are better than that.
So my wish for the new year is that if you don’t have anything good to say about other people please don’t say anything, because it a small world out there.
Have a Happy, positive new year, in peace and unity

I wonder how many of those commenting have actually driven a vehicle? I was recently in an accident where the sun was in my eyes and couldn’t see so I slowed my car to a crawl … guess what, the car behind my could not see either and rear ended me. He got a citation for failure to stop but I also got a citation as well. I was told that driving too slow is almost as if not more dangerous than speeding sometimes. Also, if you saw the extent of damage to my car in comparison to his truck! He had a few dents and the back of my car was crumpled in. We need to realize that as unfortunate as they are and no matter what precautions you take, that accidents do happen. Instead of spreading rumors and being spiteful, we need to focus on the people that were hurt and their families. I thank God there were no fatalities and pray for the recovery of the ladies that were seriously injured.

my my my…how can the people. the govt. the police just accept from a driver who only says that the sun was in my eyes, ridiculous beyond belief. no other measures or interventions were made to to substantiate or discredit his excuse. did he use his visor. did he slow down and drive at a slow speed. this crash dont look in no blind man’s eye as a bus travelling at 15-40mph. no way. no way. it may b to late now but this driver should have been tested for drugs or sleepiness. u know most of these drivers drink beers, and other alchololic drinks while awaiting passengers and everyone know how the other drugs are consumed. families must begin to take legal action against reckless, crazy and rude drivers. sue the insurance company and go after the responsible party’s assets. people must wake up and dont allow these madness to continue. and oh health care in my country. many more will suffer. many more will die if these madness(s) continue………..to the next level my toe.

it’s very sad what happened especially to the ladies. my heart goes out to you all, and to the one who lost her legs i hope there is some form of compensation in the pipelines for you. DNO i commend you on keeping me in touch with what’s going on in my country but i do believe some of the photos were not needed. a rider said that teh driver was not going past 40 how does she know that, sometimes the rides are so smooth that you dont feel that you are moving fast. for a vehicle to receive such extensive damage i do believe that there had to be some speed involved, if the sun was in your eye driver….why didnt you slow down?
this is really sad, im not trying to blame anyone for anything but this goes to show the many improvements needed along the roads in dominica. may god bless you waitikubuli!!

Oh my god i my heart really goes out to the family and friends of this lady. However on the day in question this truck should not have been parked or at a standstill on the brow of this hill, At least a sign saying ROAD WORKS AHEAD should have been in place. And if it was not in use i am recommending that they start using these signs at once. Everytime i see things happen like this where Negligence might be involved it fills my heart with anger. Drivers please be careful on the road, espacially those fron Penville like Feyo etc. From Kendel Shillingford. Police Officer

This is a tragic accident with devastating consequences for the woman involved and the driver, surely in the interests of safety when the sun is in your eyes, wear sunglasses or more importantly SLOW DOWN. Making one more trip to carry passengers at high speed from town for a pocket full of change is not worth this sort of carnage.

Whilst DNO has a duty to report news, whether good or bad, my issue with this story is that we are being bombarded by gratuitous violence on tv,and in games, do we really need to see the gristly consequence of this accident online.

Warlock, you had minor injuries and have already left hospital, Nadine. My heart goes out to you and your family.

You said “we can’t really blame anyone for this accident …”

I’m very sorry that your family has to go through this ordeal BUT do not let grief cloud your judgment. This is a clear case of negligence by both drivers and even more so by the bus driver, for being handed the responsibility of transporting your aunt home safely and failed miserably at it.

You aunt cannot get her legs back but what she can and should get is proper compensation to ensure that she is financially secure for the rest of her life.

She should be encouraged to find an attorney and sue !

the bus will always get the extent of damages it recieved because the truck was parked and the bus was moving.the truck that stop the bus not the driver because when the bus went under the truck the bus driver couldnt control the bus again.everything including the brakes were destroyed.at the front of these buses are not made up of the hard metal they use to make the trucks.the front of these buses are made up of hard plastic.no wonder everything came back on the 3 that were at the front.the 2 women got injured badly because they had nothing to support them.however the bus driver had the steeringwheel for some kind of support.you never picture that.why do drivers dont get injured badly in accidents and their passengers do.is because they get some form of support from the steeringwheel infront them.

accidents do happen so say thank God everyone on the bus is alive and pray for the 2 women who got injured so badly.stop playing the blame game!!!!

i am sorry to see such a calamity, but this was something waiting to happen. These taxi drivers on the island keep speeding. As a visitor! while riding in these taxis, i often wait to hear the impact of this vehicles, because of the speed these drivers are speeding, By the bridge in Colihaut, is another problem, there should be a reduce speed limit in this area, with pedestrians going back and forth in this area, it is a miracle someone has not lost their life there. I am calling on the traffic division,or the village council please put a stop sign by the corner of that bar, cause when traffic is coming from the north, they do not stop when they reach the cross road,[ or 4 way crossing.] My prayers are with the victims, may the good Lord take you through this ordeal

ok well i believe enough days pass for bloggers to be crying now,,,,,now lemme get real,,,,,,if the sun was in the drivers eye,,,then he should of taken caution n drive slow as a snail,,because going at ‘normal’ speed is basically driving blind,,,,so he wrong dere,,,,,

peeps saying he was driving slow o,k now in dominica 55-60 mph is considered slow compared to the fast drivers,,,,so yeah he was ‘SLOW’ compared to the reckless drivers we are used to but was he really driving ‘slow’ like in the essence of the word,,,,i doubt that one,,,,the extent of damage done to the bus onto a truck that supposedly stop can’t make me believe that he was slow,,,,again my people we are accustomed with reckless driving as normal in dominica,,,,so he’s more careful driving can be mistaken as slow but it was not,,,don’t be foolish,,,anything 45 mph n over is fast especially for the roads we have in d/ca,,,extensive damage can b done at such speeds

now no arguement can give the poor lady back her leg,,,so here’s my advice to the family of the lady,,,,,4get any political affiliations,,,allu might have labour or workers,,,the chinese have to pay point blank,,,,,i saw a blogger say “oh doh blame the chinese they doing good for d.a” that is the blind mices speaking for supper,,,what the hell wat chinese doin have to do with the lady,,,,
u all have a case of negligence and other charges a lawyer can bring forward,,,,,this lady has to be compensated,,,nothing less than e.c $5 million by the chinese company,,,it was negligent that the driver of the truck stopped knowing it might have moving traffic,,,,,,was there any signal lights on,,,i doubt cause the driver would have seen it,,,,,,,,i’m so sorry for u my lady,,,i have a mother n the first place she likes to run is front seat,,,,when i saw that i thought of her,,,,i don’t know how i would deal with it,,,,,but the only thing allu can do is pray n give the lady full support,,,she’ll need every inch of it,,,,,but get allu self ready for a court case,,,,get a lawyer n get advice as to how to proceed,,,,,if allu is labourites to hell with damn party,,,,i say that bcuz some peeps even in allu family will try n say oh no is not the chinese fault,,,,,,if not then who’s fault it is,,,,,in any first world country the company not even waiting for a court letter,,,,they’d contact allu rite away to facilitate a quick resolution,,,,,,,so take the company (not the truck drivers) to court,,,,they have insurance to cover such,,,,so get it,,,

      December 6, 2010

Yes! Yes! Yes! That lady has to be compensated for the rest of her life without her leggs.

Someone has to be responsible for this compensation. The driver of the bus may have been a bit careless; but caution, to prevent these sort of mishap, must always be displayed. Part of the lane, where the water truck was stopped, should have closed from a good distance at both ways of the road. Than a driver would be completely to blame for an accident like that–sunbeam or not.

Otherwise, the greater part of this responsible now belong to the people who worked on the road with the standstill of that water truck. If they are the Chinese, then it is their responsibility to compensate to that lady. Let justice be done for the benifit of the weak and innocent.

First I pray that the victims will be at peace, and that they will be comforted. I just pray that they will heal quickly, but I understand the pain of all this tragedy will be etched in the psyche for ever.

Secondly, the driver should have exercised proper judgement and due caution if moving (whatever speed) and not seeing where he’s going. He should have slowed down drastically (5 mph w/emergency flashers on). You cannot not see where you’re going, esp in D/ca with all these hairpin curves, and still keep the same speed. That’s crazy and idiotic! What’s the rush?!

Thirdly, the drivers/operators of this water truck should have taken safety precautions: safety cones on the road, flaggers to slow/direct traffic. There is no way they should just stop (unless they broke down) and not take these precautions.

In all, Dominica need some serious escalation in the way they approach safety – at all levels. We think we can put asphalt on a cliff and call it a motorable road. What about the safety signs (speed limit signs, road markings, etc?) It’s a shame that once the new roads open up more folks will be hurt and killed because Dominica does not take human safety seriously.

most places in dominica once u miss or lose control there is a precipise waiting but still they drive crazy as hell i can say dat cause i was on my way to salsbaury and i had to shout to the driver fr the back asking him what horse race he runing (was not going fast !!! nonsense) any time u hit smone from the back ur wrong first rule in driving

    December 5, 2010

I am reading this and I am wondering how could this have happened. Isn’t there a law in D/ca ensuring that when any type of road construction is taking place there should be someone diverting traffic?
This is a one lane road, for crying out loud. Were there any road signs or cones placed to alert incoming traffic that there is a stopped vehicle ahead ? If there was at least a yellow cone way, way before the stopped vehicle the driver would have been alerted. If there were people stationed before and after the packed vehicle with flags diverting traffic this also could have been averted

I am also extremely disappointed about the the way that this news item has reported. Is there any sensor to what can be shown in relation to an accident?. It is not only unfortunate but very insensitive to have these injuries( the passenger’s leg totally severed) shown in this manner on the Web.
And why is everyone right over the accident (taking pictures with cell phones even) with no crowd control. Sad, just too sad

    • Sunday's child
      December 6, 2010

This was not a construction zone hence no need for trafiic diversion.

I agree with you 100%. These cell phone happy people on this island should know their place on what they should or should not photograph. This job is for the public relations officer. Unless they start suing people over this nonsense it will never stop. Most people are just looking for their 15 minutes of fame.
That is why alot of criminals have their lawyers keep them out of jail on technicality.Claiming that the crime scene was contaminated.
It is good when you can help but most time it is better to stay back and let the professionals handle the matter. Alot of people pretend thy are there to help but they are there to gather information in order to spread rumors.
Dominica is developing but still our people have a long way to go.

My heart goes out to the lady who got so severely hurt and to all others who were one way or other affected by this tragic accident.

This is not a time for us to lay blame at anyone’s door. We as a developing nation should take this as an apportunity for learning.

Maybe a conversation can now be started to have some sort of ‘passenger-bus regulation’ in place. Don’t you think so DOMINICANS????? Regulations such as:

    -all buses should have airbags
-all buses should be subjected to routine maintenance
-no passengers should sit at the front of the bus
    -sitbelts
    -speeding limits for bus drivers

All these are things we can inplement or discuss. not if we should blame the Chineses or whoever because that will not chnage the issue.

Again, my heart goes out to everyone and I will surely keep this infortunate woman in my prayers and the bus driver as well. Because I am sure he is also affected.

Truck Driver are also careless and their truck have little or no indication lighting too!!!!

I live out there and truck drive are the most stop transport, by the police and in Dominica they are the least stop transport by the police!!

Did the truck have flashing yellow lights, am sure NO, and when you stop on the road, in any other country, you must inform other road user by flashing light, or a triangle place at a minimum distance of 100 M!!!

Bus drive also play little respect to the road and thier passengers too!!!

However, speaking about usage for the road by driver of transport, in Dominica, there seem to have little understanding of the law or law to guide them, even the police break the No entries, with to resonable causes!!!!

    December 5, 2010

my heart and prayers goes out to the people that got injured in that incident especially the young lady who lost her leg. i pray that god will bless u and give u strength to go on. i know what it is to lose your leg but there is still reasons to thank god because u have life. so thats more than enough right now. just thank him that now u have a reason to bless him and praise him because it could have been worse but thank him because he was there with u and he protected u.

As for the other part of the story i hearing people saying that the chinese did not signaled that they were stopping and they should be blamed for the accident but is that soo. let me share some light on the matter. when the law say that drivers should drive at least 10 feet at the back of another driver it knew exactly what it meant. u see sometimes drivers stop for any reasons so to avoid colliding with other vehicles 10feet distance would give sufficient time for any driver to stop upon seeing the other vehicle stopped. so in that part i give the bus driver wrong. secondly he said that the sun was in his eyes. i do agree with this but did he as a experience driver handled that situation to the best of his ability. the sun is in his eyes so that means he could not see where he was going. i think that what he should have done is stop. you cant see where you going so stop. u hear the other passanger said that she did see the truck stop but she thought that the driver saw it. that man was driving blind and he failed to stop his vehice. i guess he was more concern about reaching fast to run back town than to take whatever precausion necesary. i think he was careless in that moment even if he did not do it intentional. but that accident was totally his fault. i am not god but i have been in that situation where the sun light just blinded me completely. all i did was i stopped the vehicle and started driving again slowly until i could see perfectly. i have nothing against any person or driver but i think that more care should have been exercised during this and if that was done we should not have any injures or better any accident. thanks

  51. MIdget
    December 5, 2010

It is to late now to blame anyone for this tragic accident. First and foremost the police department should see to it that any major road project of that magnitude should have a flag person placed at stratigic locations to control the trafic flow. And secondly the driver had to be going fast to cause so much damage to the vehicle and cause the amputation to the woman’s leg. And when I say speed I mean over 50 miles per hour.

I wouldnt entirely put all the blame on the driver because he wasnt aware that there was a truck infront of him…and even though he drove as slow as a crucade or took the most caution it still would have happened because HE COULD NOT SEE THE TRUCK BECAUSE OF THE SUN!!!! SO STOP BLAMING THE DRIVER…I would put the blame on the truck driver because he seeing the bus not stoping so he should have stopped(I AM SURE HE COULD SEE THE BUS)

    December 4, 2010

Human Safety is something we take very lightly and its only when things like this happen that we all give our comments, but I believe in the old saying; “prevention is always better than cure.” Let us be pro-active. In being proactive, we can lessen most or even all of these unneccessary accidents. Because 99.9% of accidents can be avoided so let us, as individuals be more cautious in our daily activities whether it be driving a bus or anything, we have to take responsiblies for our actions. My heart goes out to all those who were involved directly or indirectly in this accident.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to determine that speed was indeed a contributing factor in this accident. We were not on the bus so how do we know ?…. (1)he photos. A picture speaks a thousand words and the pics on here are screaming ”driver was speeding.” The extent of the damage to the front of the bus, especially when this was NOT a head on collision but rather the bus rear-ending the truck, proves the bus was moving @ high speed.
    (2) The impact would have to be extremely great to , not break or scrape but sever the woman’s leg.

I’m sure it must have been an accident however certain accidents can be avoided when safety protocols are learnt and practiced. The driver is , in part, to blame.

    • hmm

I am a personal friend of warlock and from my school days I have always known him to be driving fast. Any blind man can see from the pics that there was speed. Just look at the damage done to the bus. All the seats were rooted and out of place. We are not trying to pin no tail on warlock, but fair is fair. These bus drivers need to consider the people that they are transporting everyday. These are the very people who put money in their pockets. This is a very traggic situation and a big loss for the family of these ladies especially this laddy who lost both legs. We as a people need to do what is right and stop trying to always be on the wrong side. Let us try to do right for once. Let us all pray for the families and asl God to give these families courage.

It seems apparent that it’s a known fact to be blinded by the sun’s beam in that area. Why didn’t the driver take precaution ? i.e wear sun blockers or make use of the visors attached to the vehicle ?
Its easy to blame ‘the sun’ but its a negligent act if the driver didn’t do everything possible to have an unobstructed view of the road. Just my 2cents.

I agree with you 100%. Just last week I was driving outide the St. Martin Primary School at about 7:45, when I realized that I was not able to see sufficiently far ahead of me I practically brought my vehicle to a crawl. Guess what there was a little boy crossing about one meter infront of me who I only saw after he had passed. I could hve killed that boy and then what, blame the sun?

Some of our bus drivers need to be a bit more careful on the road, They need to understand that there are other people ontheir vehicle that they are responsible for.

Additionally, I think this ia a wake up call for our ladies who LOVE the front seat of busses. Please take something positive from this. There is no protection at the front of those busses.

To the victims of the accident, even the driver as well, because I cannot condemn him at this point. Please keep the faith, nothing ever happens if God does not allow it. At the end of it all there is a greater purpose that He wants to accomplish. His methods may be unauthodox but they are always the best. God bless you and I eish you a speedy revovery.

i agree, he should have taken precaution, use shades or something, and then again any one climbing a hill where their field of vision is not clear, and with a fully loaded bus should not be going more than 40. isnt that speeding on those little da roads? I am a driver and I say it is. Let us call it what it is NEGLIGENCE. Public transporters here on a whole have no regard for passengers safety. They only think of the number of trips they can make and the amount of money they can get. They are always speeding, whether it is on narrow , winding country roads or congested areas. I saw it must be written in black and white that they should not go over 40 and DAMN IT IS TIME THIS COUNTRY IMPLEMENTS LAWS, THE LADY IS FIGHTING FOR HER LIFE AT THIS MOMENT.

@anonymous…..why say one thing and then say another thing!!!u just said u travel from possi to roseau almost everyday 4 work and u know how some areas are because of the sun.so why now u saying the man had to be speeding!!!is either u positive or u negative u cannot be both!!!passengers said the driver wasnt speeding he was driving at his normal speed.so why now u passing judgement!!!stupes….the truck is made up of a much harder material than the buses so u expect such damage!!!the truck is higher than the bus so u expect the bus to go under the truck.be realistic man….its not speed alone that would contribute to that uno.its a truck and a bus for crying out loud not a bus and a bus!!!

Jo to colihaut u can hardly see a thing about that time because of the sun. Drivers take more caution because by now I know exactly when the sun is gonna hit especially when you are seated at the front. I wish you all well and hope the lady can hold strong

To all those making excuses for the bus driver, I wonder if it was you that lose your legs you would be singing that song.. If you know that the sun in your eyes.. WHY DIDNT YOU JUST SLOW DOWN? Portsmouth bus drivers like to drive fast .. the more trips they make the more money they pocket… And as a passenger at the back you may not feel the how fast they are really driver but if you at the front and you just look over the speedometer you would be suprised. I was one of the first to arrive 2 minutes after the accident. And honestly my heart goes out to the TWO ladies, because that was a long and painful ordeal. Because of the man’s negligence and the passengers on that bus should be angry for his negligences also but they so dont want the man to get in trouble they saying their nonsense. But the truth of the matter is the bus driver was going fast UP A HILL WITH THE SUN IN HIS EYES BEFORE A CORNER…

U really shouldn’t blame the chinese in this accident, they are doing a great job in Dominica and though you may not like them that is so uncalled for that you are sadly blaming them. what happen to being more careful when driving, we all know that the bus drivers speed, I have always said and will say again there is no law in Dominica and if there is and Dominicans sure dont respect it, what happen to Speed limit, lets face it not even the Police you guys obey and that is real sad.

@ Observer, come on!!! You CANNOT blame the Chinese or anyone whom the truck belonged to! Why? Because at the time of the accident, it was STATIONARY!! The driver of the MOVING vehicle has to take full responsibility. I am sorry it happened but he should not have been speeding if he knew about that time of day, drivers can’t see properly because of the sunglare… after all, he travels that route everyday. Leave the Chinese out of this… they are NOT TO BLAME.

  93. This Hurts
    December 4, 2010

” He (driver) was not speeding but he was not going at 40mph either” I no longer live in Dominica but I am unaware that the speed limits have been increased to anything over 40 MPH. Bearing this in mind I would have to think that anything over 40 MPH is considered as speeding in the Dominica context. Irrispective, of prevailing speed limits however, I dare say that the pictures suggest that he must have been travelling at a fair clip to sustain so much damage from hitting a vehicle which was not even comming in the opposite direction. Yaall don’t shoot the messenger now.

  94. A reader
    December 4, 2010

The person named “Fire” which driver in his right mind would willfully hurt his passengers? And to “Slinker” you do not have to be going fast for that sort of damage to occur in it basically enters under the truck. These trucks have some serious metal compared to the much softer body of the bus… plus the truck is in a stationary position which makes it worse.

I think we need to think before we speak. True we all have a right to our views but Gosh, think people. I’m sure that the driver would have done everything he could to avoid this, because this is something he will remember for the rest of his life.

To all drivers though, shades do help, especially the polarized ones – yes they are expensive but at least you can still see a bit in the sun. Around these times when the sun is going down I always wear my shades because them in such places, anything can happen.

My heart and prayers go out to those injured especially the two ladies, but also to the driver… I feel your pain brother, but be strong because it could have still been worst. Thank God still for his goodness!

I am sorry that she may also lose the other leg. What pain and suffering! It is no easy matter for her. May God bless and help her at this time and in future.
The sun was in the driver’s face?
Certain accidents could be avoided. A message for those who manufacture those cars/trucks/vans/buses and those who retail them and others who purchase them, please ensure that they have a protective covering against specifically the bright sun. I do not know if this van has one. If it did not have one, it is negligence on the part of manufacturers of those vehicles. Considering what occurred, steps are to be taken to install one on each vehicle. The government should look into this.
Lives are precious. Likewise the health and protection of nationals.

      thats so true

    • Hmmm
      December 4, 2010

So now it is the vehicle manufacturer fault?
A little insite into the vehicle manufacturing world.
Vehicles are manufactured based on the country to which they are exported safety criteria. So if this vehicle wasn’t made to be exported to a place where hills and sun is an issue them maybe there will be no shadeband or sun visor. So before Dominicans run out and buy the cheapest vehicle they should take into account the safety criteria for the vehicle based on what it will be used for. Based on the photos this vehicle doesn’t have a shadeband so maybe the driver should have used his visor if it had one or maybe wear sun glasses. I am sure this is not the first time he has driven on this road and the sun was in his eyes.
Also, we should look at safety on the road. I have a few questions about the water truck.
      1) Why was the watertruck parked around a corner?
      2) If it had to park around the corner, were there safety/orange cones placed on the road at least 20 meters before the watertruck/corner to warn drivers of the danger ahead?
If the answers to these questions are NO then driver safety needs to be up’d on Dominica roads.

I hope both ladies and the driver get through this.

I always had that very fear about sitting at the front of Dominica’s buses and this tragic accident justifies this for me. I know that this is the buses that we are used to but safety has to be an option. These buses have no protection for front seat passengers or the drivers.

    December 4, 2010

I am very sorry but something needs to be done about our bus drivers. Most of them are ignorant and illiterate. There needs to be some kind of head exam before someone can go on the road to drive people. Also apart from the road test our drivers need to take a written test.
I don’t think our bus drivers…well most of them know anything about the machines that they drive. They think that because they are driving that they are in control. Imagine you asking a bus driver what is whiplash and he cannot tell you.
There are some bus drivers who are so insultive when you ask them to stop speeding. The responses you get are just so absurd. “i have been driving my bus for x number of years?’ yes mr. bus driver, and your point is?????
The police needs to look seriously too at bus drivers who insist on speeding in the village. I cannot imagine a bus driver doing 60 in a village.

Seriously somebody has to take a closer look at what our bus drivers are doing on the road. I am thankful that with the way they drive we don’t have an accident everyday of the week. and i dare say that this has nothing to do with their professed skill.

I am making a special appeal to all bus drivers, when somebody boards your bus, you’re supposed to drive them with care. It doesn’t mean that you drive like a tortoise but at the same time doesn’t mean that you should drive like you are super late for an event. you’re going to get to your destination whether you speed or not. The lives of everybody is special. Take care of your passengers and stop the reckless driving.

OK so what i don’t understand, not passing the blame to anyone but, shouldn’t the Chinese employ hazard lights and cones when they got workers and trucks parked along the road ? shouldn’t the Chinese employ someone to look out for traffic at least 50 feet from either end of where they are working? this poor safety policy needs to be revised. it was only by the grace of god that no one lost there life. But it now makes me reconsider traveling on the buses that we employ on the road to transport persons from one place to another.

I propose a revamp of the current system a let us look at using vehicles that where manufactured specifically for transportation of people. And our drivers please be more aware of what is going on around you when driving. pay close attention. if you driving and you cannot see properly please please please slow down.

I already lost a few of my brethren already for the year and each one that leaves the pain hurts more than the last one.

In light of what has just occurred I implore the people from traffic division to assess this area and mark it as an accident prone zone. 126. Waitukubuli
    December 4, 2010

An added note to Dominican drivers: Please respect your passengers and be more considerate. They are not mannequins. You have to drive with caution as they entrust their lives in your hands. I hate to blame people, if it is true as stated above that the sun obstructed the driver’s view then he should have slowed down. Due to the extent of damage in this photo it appears that he was speeding.

That reminded me of the time i went to D’ca and on my way to Roseau on this taxi, the guy drove so fast that he almost collided with an on coming dump truck. He had no choice but to booway in a touf dasheen in someone’s garden somewhere marigot. Man, i see lalo. I told the guy 5 years I haven’t seen roseau he need to slow down. But thank God for that touf dasheen, eh. It could have been worse.

It appears that I will have to hire a wheel barrow the next time I am there because that is just too dangerous. Its like a gamble

    • Lizavier4Jesus
      December 4, 2010

I understand what you are saying, but it was not your destiny to become involved or die in a taxi accident on that day. That is the reason we simply have to continue with the hope of Life and a fruitful contribution in this Life, on a day to day basis. God will not disappoint us, because He wants His glory to remain exalted.

But if you do not want to use a wheel barrow to drive yourself to Roseau from Melvin Hall Airport, don’t speak those words, God might just fulfill your spoken words. However that was funny; so let us hope that God took it as a sense of humor from you.

I pray for the lady and her family is not easy to know one day u are okay and can walk and do thing for yourself and the next day you are not and u have to be dependent on somebody to do it for you. its just so sad. May God be with you my dear. also to the other passengers who were traumatized in one way i tell u to just be strong.

  129. Waitukubuli
    December 4, 2010

Alas, poor pity lady. That is too sad, my heart bleeds for her. I hope for a speedy recovery for all those involved. One thing I can never fathom is the fact that most drivers always escape uninjured in accidents – not that i hope for the contrary, its just something I have observed and can never understand.
But I thank God for no fatalities.

Give her strenght dear Lord God and let your peace guard her heart and mind.

  130. Lizavier4Jesus
    December 4, 2010

So does the buses not have a shield that protects the driver’s vision from the sunbeam? Should the driver not reduce his driving speed, as low as possible if he is unable to see the road, or did he have to accellerate in order to do the hill?

Let us hope that there are not more questions than answers, as we need answers through an intensive inquiry, that we might prevent this sort of thing from happening again.

  134. This is just the beginning...
    December 3, 2010

Its simple – Bus Drivers need to go through testing to be qualified to drive PASSENGER buses AND maintain certain speed limits – Truck drivers too. IN FACT we need police influence on the road to enforce this (not just at the end of the month for ticketing unlicensed vehicles) – because you know once those roads get fixed and paved and widened – those speeds will just keep going up with more and more accidents.

Everyone please don’t jump to conclusions. This was an unfortunate incident. The bus driver was not speeding and he was not overtaking. I was on the bus. He was blinded by the sun. He did not see anything in front him. The truck had stopped in the road (probably because of the sun). We at the back of the bus saw the truck but the driver did not. He just kept driving at his normal speed and that is what caused the impact. Please let us pray for the two ladies at the front who were badly injured and are undergoing surgery. Please pray fopr the bus driver who is taking this very hard.

Hello Reader, am sorry to see things like this!!!!

I would like to say Truck and bus drive, are the drive who have the most road driving expriences around the world, however in Dominica they “truck and bus drive” act or drive the road with on care for other road user, pedestrians, or their passangers!!!!

    Truck in Dominica is well-known for malfunction lights, indicator, ball-head tyers, etc….;

Bus drive drive have no respect for the road users laws, e.i. everywhere in the world the speed limits is 110 KM, and that limited to some roads, however in Dominica, you often see bus drive, with passenger on the bus, exceding 110 Km….

Drive please take other in consideration, as well as these weak, low crash rating car from Japan in consideration too..

    • Lizavier4Jesus
      December 4, 2010

How are they able to drive so fast on our roads which are still so bumpy and whirling. Did you say over 110 km? On the roads of Dominica?

To “living out there”: I am not an English scholar but i have studied other languages so I know when something was first written in a different language and then translated to English. Reading this comment I know exactly in what language it was first written in – a word beginning in ‘C’- and what gave you out the most was your silly comment about Japanese ‘ low crash rating cars’.

To the family of all the people involved in this accident, I pray to the lord to give you all courage to over come this tragic experience and i pray especially to the lady who lost her leg for at the bottom of this dark hole you will find God’s shinning light.
