The People’s Republic of China has offered US$300 000 in cash as emergency assistance to the Commonwealth of Dominica following the passing of Tropical Storm Erika.

“We will continue to provide assistance according to the changing situations,” one Chinese correspondent told Dominica News Online (DNO) on Tuesday.

The monies he said will go towards emergency humanitarian assistance to help with disaster relief.

He also stated that Chinese Ambassador Li Jiangning expresses his great sympathy with the loss of all Dominicans on this devastation caused by tropical storm Erika.

If you read the international news, then it is very obvious that a lot of countries are needing aid for many reasons. It’s not all about Dominica. I for one am very grateful for this donation, and would like to thank the Country of China.

Those who are ungrateful for Aid or foreign help should be ashamed.

I donate where I can, but if somebody does not say a simple “thank you” then they don’t get a second chance.

I hope that $300,000 was not the loan we (Skerrit) signed with that Chinese Investment Group in 2013, for the refurbishment of the airport to be built at the old location the DFP had chosen, to build a hospital, and to build a hotel. Mr. Embassy needs to clear the air on this like he did the last time.

Cable-Stay Suspension bridges should be mandatory for all bridges that span our rivers. These bridges will allow water to flow underneath unimpeded compared to the current design that we’re using. A good example is the old Bath Estate Bridge. It’s still standing after all these years.

Thank you again China!!! @john wallace your greed and selfishness consumes you.

Wow,am in Dominica and am seeing that picture for the first time. The river not only took the bridge but portion of land on both side of the bridge. Building back that bridge means building back the roads and serious defence walls.

Well one of my criticisms of Dominica’s infrastructure has always been the bridges. I have always felt that this was going to happen one day because every last one of our bridges have been constructed too low and with their foundations too close to the rivers which they are supposed to be passing over. I am no engineer, but I am a physical planner and in my humble opinion it appears that these bridges need to be built higher, then arc down on either side onto foundations which are at a considerable greater distance away from the rivers than they are now. This does not mean that the bridges would be 100% safe from an Act of God, however it certainly would taking a lot more doing from the river to achieve this level of destruction. Such bridges are expensive to construct but will work out cheaper in the long run, particularly in light of the fact that the frequency of extreme weather events is increasing exponentially as climate change is being experienced globally.

China didn’t even reach in their pockets. I hope they realize they are very responsible for the weakness of most of the new bridges that were washed away at the first surge of water. The old machourie bridge has been standing from day 1, and that is the bridge that had to be dusted off and put into use again.

John, why couldn’t you just reread this part?
“We will continue to provide assistance according to the changing situations,” one Chinese correspondent told Dominica News Online (DNO) on Tuesday.

Makes you look like an idiot.

    • The Real Facts
      September 2, 2015

Did you not read what was stated? China will continue to provide assistance according to the changing situation.
China is not the only country helping. China has already immensely assisted Dominica.
A thankful heart has a continuous feast. Be grateful; be thankful and also that you probably were not affected by this storm or not as much as others.
Furthermore, I would not call anyone cheap. When disasters strike, many countries come to the rescue and assist other countries.. How much money do they have to give every time disasters strike? They have their internal problems.
Did you not read that recently explosions occurred in China? Many of its people are also displaced because of it.
$US 300,000 is a lot of money; it is not even $EC. Let your words be kind and to those who generously assist Dominica.

    • Thanks
