A photo released by Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency shows the capsized vessel

A Chinese-owned dredger which is registered to Dominica has capsized off Malaysia, international news agency Reuters is reporting.

The agency reports that one person is dead and 14 are reported missing after the sinking of the JBB Rong Chang 8.

Quoting the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Reuters said the incident took place off Malaysia’s southern state of Johor on Wednesday.

The report stated that three Chinese crew members were rescued safely.

Search and rescue operations were ongoing, with two patrol boats deployed, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency said.

Reuters stated that the Chinese-owned, Dominican-registered dredger was carrying one Malaysian, an Indonesian and 16 Chinese crew members.

The JBB Rong Chang 8 carries the Dominican flag and has a gross tonnage of 6,200, according to marinetraffic.com.

That boat is a dredger and was sucking sand. Honestly. There is a sister ship, also flying the flag of Dominica, the JBB Rong Chang 6, imo 8789512. Let’s hope a similar lot does not befall them.

Dominicans have 7th sense and it’s called “ignorance by nature”
We’ve always had it. Some people just know how to control it and some have no control. Not even medication cure this sickness.

It is not irrelevant whee the ship is registered. An item has to pass safety and be fit for the use intended, otherwise will fail safety and cant be registered. Therefore being registered to DOMINICA ???????.

The issue there is ,as long as DIRTY Skerit and his morons are misleading this country bad things day after day will happen to , or Dominica”s name.
Can’t you see this is a cursed country?

    • A ship can be registered in any country. The reason why some people chose to register ships in  Dominica, is because it is cheaper to Register there than any other country.

Safety as some people contends has nothing to do with registration, obtaining insurance is where safety, and the condition of the ship comes into question.

We had one insured with Lloyd’ of London i in the 1970’s it was a nightmare, to get it insured. If one insures a boat that is not Sea worthy; the insurance company could find themselves paying out money for a pile of junk!

Let them keep selling them parrots from the hills and these types of accidents will continue to happen. Labor that cause that to happen.

      March 21, 2018

Of course…it had to happen, not surprised someone if blaming labor for a ship sinking.. labor is responsible for all accidents.
When the next plane Goes missing or a volcano erupts it will be skeritt’s fault right?
Hey, did skeritt conspire with a person dealing with black magic to cause Maria to destroy the country so he will look like a hero after???
Man ppl like need a life, blaming a ship sinking on a political party.

        March 22, 2018

No, but the Minister from the Valley was seen off-loading an entire truck load of materials at his private residence in Roseau. After being caught red-handed in the act, he claimed that he was merely storing these materials donated to help those who were displaced by the storm, so you tell me what’s really going on with Labor.

      • The one and only.
        March 23, 2018

Hey I’m not going to sugar coat if labor is wrong..but.you cannot blame DLP for everything…regarding the materials I agree with you on that.

A vehicle registered with First Domestic Insurance is involved in ac accident? Is the naming of the insurance company relevant? Or should the insurance company be held accountable?. Having said this can the author of this article state the importance of the registering country?

    Planes crashes almost everyday.
accidents on a daily basis.. sooooooooooooooooooooooo

Come on man give me a break.

As the saying goes, you are comparing oranges with apples. I woul have thought that you know very well that a country’s maritime register is not the same as an insurance policy, which has to be taken out separately for a ship. The flag of the country it is registered in only provides it with a legal domicile

    March 21, 2018

Roy Williams not because a ship carries a DOMINICA flag that it has anything to do with the government. You all are just bent on spreadsheets of propaganda. You are damn right Allegations of widespread corruptions, but the real corruptions of your Blue Party you seem to close your one eyed to them ,the same way that you read about the about the Tanker ,I guess you may or must have heard what the PS/Agriculture explained about the Oarrots being sent to Germany.
In the meantime the same corrupt Government has been receiving international recognition for good financial control
I would like you to come down next January to contest the election’s or come to witness for yourself to get the results.

A young man who resides in Miami, walks into a supermarket and shoots ten people, three did not survive, it was later found out that he was born in Dominica, are you telling me that has nothing to do with Dominica. Are you telling me, when the news breaks, the name of Dominica, will not be mentioned. In terms of the latest scandal concerning the ships flying Dominica’s flag, are you telling me, Government did not allow the involved company to use Dominica’s flag or receive some kind of financial benefits, for using Dominica’s flag.

    March 21, 2018

The relevance of the news should be that 1 is dead and 13 missing. While the place it is registered to is important, there should be less stress on where it is registered, and more stress on the possible loss of lives.

  10. March 21, 2018

But what really happening in that place ner… once is Dominica name is a bursting oil sanction. .is a boat sinking. ..is a parrot taking ride to Germany..is a ng lapseng.. is a madueke. .a leriza mon Fared. .. is a borbol…is a passport selling … my God that country finish..

“Reuters stated that the Chinese-owned, Dominican-registered dredger was carrying one Malaysian, an Indonesian and 16 Chinese crew members…”

Here we go again Dominica is once again used to register dredger somewhere in the middle east. I guess they {Tony and Skerrit) will once again blame UWP for registering it

  12. zandoli
    March 21, 2018

Why is that news relevant to us? The country where the ship is registered is typically one where there is little or no oversight and is cheap to register a ship. Ships have been sinking since humankind learned to float a boat. I am not sure what the point of this article is.

    • Toto
      March 21, 2018

The point is Zandoli that people are dead and reports like these do not help give our country a good name, especially when it is mostly old ships they call rust buckets on our register.

Sad to hear about this unfortunate occurrence. Can the government inform the people as to the names and how many of these ships are registered to Dominica? Seems like it’s all adverse happenings for Dominica. The people’s very souls are exhausted with this constant distressing news about the country. The trajectory of this country needs to move in the opposite direction.

Here we go again, making international BAD news. We are still suffering from the consequences of Maria, which was followed by allegations of wide spread corruption. Presently, a case of an alleged smuggling of parrots. The ink has not even dried on the paper reporting the parrot’s news, hegass, we are told of a fatal capsized flagged Dominican dredger, we know absolutely nothing about, is attracting the world’s attention.
