DOWASCO doing all in its power to improve water situation in West Coast, Reigate

Erika had a devastating effect on West Coast villages like Coulibistrie.

Public Relations Officer of Dominica Water and Sewerage Company, (DOWASCO), Edward Registe said the company is doing everything in its power to improve on the water situation in the areas of Colihaut, Dublanc, Bioche and Coulibistrie.

Following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika these areas were severely affected causing damage to their water supply.

Registe comments came following  an article sent to DNO editorial column dated November 10, 2015, from a concerned resident of Dublanc expressing the frustration of lack of pipe borne water in that area.

Registe who spoke to DNO during an interview on Wednesday, said although DOWASCO is doing its best to restore pipe borne water in affected areas, the company is faced with many challenges.

“Everything is being done to the very best of our ability and our capacity to try and improve on the situation and to provide a more sustained supply of water,” he said.

He said in the meantime, DOWASCO is providing water from 8:00pm to 5:00am on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

He continued, “In between that we are trucking water to the communities.”

“We have been taking water from the Picard area to send to Colihaut and yes, to me they have water, Colihaut, Dublanc… so they do get water on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and it is really between 8:00pm and 5:00am from what I know,” he stated.

He stated further that DOWASCO is working on putting a plan in place, which he said he is not at liberty to discuss at the moment, “but I expect that soon enough we will have a more sustained (supply).”

The DOWASCO PRO encourages residents in these areas to store water when it is available and continue their resilience, “because that is the best that we can do for now.”

“It doesn’t mean that they will have water like many of the communities, but they would have water possibly during the day and throughout we may have to conduct maintenance issues,” he noted.

Registe added, “So we might have to interrupt couple times, but yes, we are working towards having a more sustained supply, but we just continue to solicit their patience.”

Meanwhile some residents of Kingshill, particularly the Reigate area, are raising concerns as it relates to the lack of pipe borne water in that area.

Registe explained that the Reigate area is fed from the Giraudel/Eggleston system and since Erika that system continues to be down.

“We have done everything that is necessary to restore water except for one thing,” Registe stated. “This is an area we would have to pump water, we use a pumping system, an electrical pump and one of the cables to power the pump was destroyed and has to be replaced,” he explained.

“We have ordered it. There were delays in getting it to Dominica but we are looking forward to getting it very soon and as soon as that is available we can then power-up the pumps again and then water will be available to the people of Giraudel, Eggleston and Reigate,” he assured residents in those areas.

Utter rubbish. The communities were going about 2 weeks since we last had water by truck or pipe borne before the editorial column was made. So stating that we have been getting water on Monday\’s etc is completely incorrect. Thank God for the column that we started receiving water again. Kudos to the writer of that column and shame on Dowasco. 3 months is already too long for these people to be without water which is necessary for life. Totally Shambolic!!!

Dominicans have failed themselves by abandoning our history. We used galvanized roofing which helped us with water before. We need to think about that especially the young house owners. Also the ministry for housing should put things into place to accommodate Dominica weather. All health centers should have generators attached for automatic switch for electricity. Homes should have a shelter room as well. Our housing should be assessed after hurricane seasons and improvements made.
