ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has described the death of prominent national Dr Bernard Yankey as a blow for Dominica.
Yankey, a former Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) High Commissioner to Canada died Tuesday after succumbing to injuries sustained in a car crash on Saturday evening.
“I’d say the country has lost a great citizen who selflessly gave so much of his intellect and knowledge towards the development of Dominica and the Caribbean,” Skerrit said.
The Dominica Association of Catholic Men (DACOM) also said it was saddened by the death of its member “who had given much” to the group.
Yankey, who would have celebrated his 75th birthday later this month, also served as and as director of the Economic Affairs unit at the OECS Secretariat in St Lucia and was a former director of policy at the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank.
Locally, he had stints as the chairman of the Agricultural Industrial Development Bank and the Dominica Banana Marketing Corporation. He also served as the first president of the Dominica State College and was a board member of the Dominica Social Security.
He received the Sisserou Award of Honour in 1983 during Dominica’s independence celebrations.
@Leslie: Thanks Leslie! I am one of those that doh slack with my duties; those who know me can attest to that. Not bragging, is true.
@skg: I normally laugh when I read those kinds of comments (I did when I read yours); but sometimes pawol sort kon sa ka foo-tay mwen ahwajay!!! Ton-neh!!!

@cee: Let the ignorant talk!!! Apparently, D’can is the Chief medical officer of PMH so he knows about the equipment they keep hidden away and use once in a blue moon!!! LOL!!! Continue providing the service to the best of your ability and tell D’can if he can do better come provide the service!!!!!
Dr.FEDT’s imput needed urgently.
Where is Dr.FEDT when we need him most? Doc let us hear you. tell us about internal bleeding after a motor vehicle accident. Don’t gotelling us about impairment from marijuana and alcohol etc. Please stay on topic this time.
@cee: and you just took the bait u responded lol. R.I.P Dr. Yankey you will be missed
@D’can: why do u so-called ‘Dominicans’ say these sorts of things? I work at the hospital. Now tell me: which equipment are we hoarding and use only once in a while? what the hell are u talking about? do you know exactly why Dr Yankey succumbed to his injuries and the extent of those injuries? are u a medical expert?
you know what: people like you just like to make those kinds of comments to evoke a response from the rest of us. As we would say in local terms: noticing you want nah?
The Bible says that it is appointed unto man once to die and after, the judgement. Be ready when death comes a knocking people. RIP.
RIP Doc
Sympathies to his family and friends. I heard he was saying he felt much better and was ready to be discharged that same morning. Research shows that many persons who suffer hip injury that are aged can result in blot clots which eventually kill them. That perhaps may have happened to him. A great man, a wonderful family friend and one who had education and self-development as his priority in life. We have lost a great son of the soil. R.I.P sir!
Where did this accident happen? This one is rather weird, heard absolutely nothing on the accident. Sad, may his soul rest in peace and may his family find comfort during this trying moment.
my deepest sympathies to the family!!! May God comfort you in your time of bereavement
@D’can: before you put ur comments friend, do some research!!! READ UP AND EDUCATE YOURSELF!! read up on the complications of sugery!!!
our medical exerpertise are lacking. rip my brother
RIP
@D’can: What are you talking about? Do you even know the nature and extent of the injuries he suffered? You people just can’t help yourselves but spread rumours.
On behalf of my family i would like to extend condolences to the Yankey family. My parents knew Mr. Yankey from his stint in Trinidad when he attended the then ICTA. My mother, Barbara Dey nee Guiseppi was close to him and many meals were shared with Mr. Yankey and mr. Henderson at my family home in Trinidad. He never forgot these acts of kindness and kept in touch. RIP Mr. Yankey, a man who never lost the common touch from your friends in Trinidad.

So sorry to learn of Dr. Jankey’s death. It came as a total surprise as I was unaware of the vehicular accident he was involved in. This is one of the few things we can’t postpone….death! Hi friend; are you prepared for this eventuality? It is my understanding that preparation can make all the differences!
RIP sir
Yes, it is a sad day and a day which the Nation will consider the loss of a great Dominican and a good religious person
Your soul will rest in PEACE Bernard
B, As i called him over the years we were friends, i must say he was a very kind and careing person who Dominica will miss for a very lone time.B may god bless you for all the good you did for the people of Dominica; I will miss you aways for you have gone to be with your maker!
Dr. Yankey was a great man with a great mind who always had something to share with persons who were willing to listening and learn. He never showed that he was impatient with anyone even if the person was slow in understanding what he was explaining. He was a real states man that many should emulate. He also gave selflessly to others without looking for anything in return.
I pray that the great Jehovah will bring comfort to his family and his name will be engrave in some part of Dominica so that we can all remember this selfless hero
He was a good man..
… Guess he suffered some internal injuries that no body realized.
This is why I like to watch overseas E.R eh… they do complete check – we can be so complacent in DA sometimes. I know we have a CT Scan and I sure he could afford a scan (if the machine operable).
We need better equipment.. and when we get them ..not keep them and use them once in a blue moon.
I am waiting for progress in this matter.
RIP my colleaque, I look so much towards working with you on the DSS board, that it was a shock to hear of your passing my condolences to your famil.
As stated above. May he RIP.

Somewhere in the distance, there is a violin of sympathy playing … But not here. Death is not something we would rejoice at and will not be something I rejoice at. …

Dr Yankey, my mentor and friend you are gone but will not be forgotten. Dr Yankey was a people’s person, a man of principle and integrity when it comes to work principles and productivity. In his interaction with people, Dr. Yankey took the opportunity to train and instill knowledge of what he knew to all he gor in contact with. He shared his work expertise with all an sundry and wrote quite a number of aticles on knowledge of agriculture, Management of Human Resourses, Religion just about everything.
